Blazon: A Shield, azure fringed by a<br />

mantle. A Helmet, argent, crowns the<br />

* A three-armed candelabrum: Or an Azure<br />

Symbolism: Striving for a blessed life which bears good fruit;<br />

in family life, at the workplace and in service of God. Also<br />

pointing to “Let your light shine...”.<br />

* Open book: Argent and Azure<br />

Symbolism: Points to the teaching of skills, setting of norms<br />

and exposure to knowledge.<br />

* Three circles intertwined: Or on Azure<br />

Symbolism: Suggests the three disciplines on which Christian<br />

National Education is founded - Home, <strong>School</strong> and Church. The<br />

intertwining suggests the ideal of unity between these<br />

disciplines.<br />

The Motto: Conquer, in both languages, on a golden ribbon<br />

underneath. The motto was proposed by Mr Manie le Roux, a<br />

wapenskild is ‘n geslote silwerhelm. In die<br />

skild is drie simbole aangebring:<br />

* Driekoppige kandelaar in goud:<br />

Simboliek: ‘n Vrugbare lewe na wasdom, as gesinsmens, in die<br />

dagtaak en in diens van die Here (ook n.a.v. “ Laat julle lig so<br />

skyn voor die mense”).<br />

* Geopende boek in silwer:<br />

Simboliek: Die taak van die skool t.o.v. die oordrag en<br />

inoefening van kennis, vaardighede en norme.<br />

* Drie ineengestrengelde sirkels in goud:<br />

Simboliek: Huis, Skool en Kerk. Die drie dissiplines waarop ‘n<br />

Christelik-Nasionale onderwysstelsel gebou is. Die<br />

ineengestrengeldheid dui op eenheidsideaal t.o.v. elke kind.<br />

Die leuse: Oorwin in albei tale op ‘n goue lint onderaan. Die<br />

leuse is deur ‘n oud-skoolhoof, mnr Manie le Roux, voorgestel.<br />

GENERAL:<br />

OUR SCHOOL<br />

<strong>Outeniqua</strong> <strong>Primary</strong> is a school with a proud history. Up until 1921<br />

we formed part of two high schools, the Girls’ and Boys’ <strong>School</strong>s.<br />

After 1921 the Girls’ <strong>Primary</strong> <strong>School</strong> formed a separate entity<br />

when the senior sections of the two schools amalgamated to<br />

form the George High <strong>School</strong>. When the senior section, now<br />

known as the <strong>Outeniqua</strong> High <strong>School</strong>, moved to new premises in<br />

1923, the primary section stayed behind as a separate school,<br />

Boys’ <strong>Primary</strong>. This later became the Manie le Roux Boys<br />

<strong>Primary</strong> <strong>School</strong>. In January 1971 the two primary schools<br />

amalgamated to form a new co-ed primary school. Since 1974<br />

the school has been known as <strong>Outeniqua</strong> <strong>Primary</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />

<strong>Outeniqua</strong> <strong>Primary</strong> is a parallel medium school and one of the<br />

largest senior primary schools in our country. The principal is<br />

Mr Johan Smit. The staff consists further of 35 educators, 1<br />

teacher librarian, 1 art educator, 3 music educators, 1 school<br />

psychologist, 2 student teachers, 1 remedial teacher, 2 sport coordinators,<br />

4 secretaries, 1 senior general foreman and 7<br />

assistants. The number of learners per class varies. There are<br />

approximately 4 Afrikaans and 4 English classes per grade.<br />

ALGEMEEN:<br />

ONS SKOOL<br />

<strong>Laerskool</strong> <strong>Outeniqua</strong> is ‘n skool met ‘n ryke en trotse verlede.<br />

Tot 1921 was die primêre skool ingesluit by twee hoërskole, die<br />

Meisie- en Jongenskool. Met die amalgamasie van die hoërskole<br />

het die Laer Meisieskool as ‘n aparte skool voortgegaan. In 1923<br />

het die Hoërskool <strong>Outeniqua</strong> ontstaan en toe die nuwe perseel<br />

betrek is, het die George Jongenskool ook as ‘n aparte skool<br />

begin funksioneer. Dit word later die <strong>Laerskool</strong> Manie le Roux<br />

wat in 1971 met die George Meisieskool amalgameer. Hierdie<br />

nuwe skool is in 1974 herdoop tot die <strong>Laerskool</strong> <strong>Outeniqua</strong>.<br />

<strong>Laerskool</strong> <strong>Outeniqua</strong> is ‘n parallel medium skool en een van die<br />

grootste senior primêre skole in ons land. Die skoolhoof is mnr<br />

Johan Smit. Die personeel bestaan verder uit 35 leerkragte,<br />

1 bibliotekaresse, 3 musiek leerkragte, 1 remediërende leerkrag,<br />

1 kunsleerkrag, 2 student leerkragte, 1 skoolsielkundige, 2<br />

sportkoördineerders, 4 sekretaresses, 1 senior faktotum en 7<br />

algemene assistente. Die leerdertal per klas wissel. Daar is<br />

TEXT BOOKS, MODULES AND<br />

STATIONERY<br />

The school supplies exercise books and modules to the learners<br />

free of charge. Where possible the school supplies text books<br />

as well. Parents are responsible for other stationery as well as<br />

a calculator and geometry set, where<br />

applicable. (An accessories list is obtainable<br />

from the secretary).<br />

Exercise books must be covered and a<br />

sticker must be placed on the right-hand<br />

top corner of each book, on which the name,<br />

learning area and grade of learner must<br />

appear. Books must preferably be covered with plastic.<br />

Stickers are also used on the plastic bags in the files. We use<br />

a modular system as well as text books in certain learning areas.<br />

Tippex may under no circumstances be used in school books.<br />

<strong>School</strong> Diary is compulsory.<br />

COMPUTER CENTRE<br />

We are proud of our well equipped<br />

Computer Centre, where all learners are<br />

given the opportunity to personally<br />

operate computers during the Technology<br />

periods. The computer lab is also<br />

available in the afternoons for use of<br />

students and for Learner Support. (See<br />

extramural timetable.)<br />

HANDBOEKE, MODULES EN SKRYFBEHOEFTES<br />

Die skool voorsien skryfboeke en modules gratis aan leerders.<br />

Waar moontlik word handboeke ook gratis voorsien. Ouers is<br />

verantwoordelik vir die aankoop van skryfbenodigdhede, asook ‘n<br />

sakrekenaar en meetkundestel waar van toepassing. (’n<br />

Benodigdhedelys is by die sekretaresse verkrygbaar).<br />

Skryfboeke word oorgetrek en ‘n plakker<br />

moet in die regter boonste hoek van elke<br />

boek geplak word. Leerders se naam en<br />

van, die leerarea en graad word daarop<br />

aangebring. Boeke moet ook verkieslik met<br />

plastiek oorgetrek word. Plakkers word<br />

ook op die plastieksakke binne die lêers<br />

gebruik. Ons gebruik ‘n modulestelsel asook<br />

handboeke in sekere leerareas.<br />

Tippex mag onder geen omstandighede in skoolboeke gebruik<br />

word nie.<br />

Skool-tuiswerkboek is verpligtend.<br />

REKENAARSENTRUM<br />

Ons is baie trots op ons ten volle<br />

toegeruste Rekenaarsentrum waar elke<br />

leerder die geleentheid kry om self op<br />

‘n rekenaar te werk gedurende die<br />

Tegnologie-periodes.<br />

Die Rekenaarsentrum is ook in die<br />

middae oop vir gebruik deur leerders<br />

asook Leerderondersteuning. (Verwys na<br />

buitemuurse rooster elke kwartaal).<br />

TUITION FEES<br />

Tuition fees are reviewed annually. When learners are enrolled,<br />

the parents receive a form with information regarding payment<br />

of tuition fees.<br />

The greater part of the school’s income is derived from the<br />

parents. This fund is essential for the purchasing of sport<br />

equipment, teaching aids, the maintenance of the school building<br />

& grounds, security and salaries for additional staff members,<br />

which is not provided by the Department.<br />

SCHOOL RULES<br />

APPEARANCE OF LEARNERS:<br />

1 Unless permission is granted by the Governing Body, learners<br />

must comply with the regulations concerning school uniform<br />

and personal appearance.<br />

2 When learners move to and from school they must be<br />

correctly dressed in school uniform unless they are involved<br />

in sport activities.<br />

3 No jewellery except a watch, Medic Alert or plain ear studs<br />

or sleepers (only girls) may be worn.<br />

4. No badges or awards other than those awarded by the school<br />

may be worn on the school uniform.<br />

ONDERRIGGELDE<br />

Onderriggelde word jaarliks hersien. Wanneer ‘n leerder<br />

ingeskryf word, ontvang ouers ‘n vorm waarop onderriggelde en<br />

wyses van betaling uiteengesit is. Die grootste gedeelte van die<br />

skool se inkomste word van die ouers verhaal. Fondse is<br />

noodsaaklik vir die aankoop van sporttoerusting, leer- en<br />

hulpmiddels; instandhouding van gebou & terrein, sekuriteit,<br />

skoolvervoer en salarisse van addisionele personeel, wat nie deur<br />

die Departement voorsien word nie.<br />

VOORKOMS VAN LEERDERS:<br />

SKOOLREëLS<br />

1. Tensy vrystelling verleen is deur die Beheerliggaam, moet<br />

leerders voldoen aan die voorskrifte ten opsigte van<br />

skooldrag en persoonlike netheid.<br />

2. Wanneer leerders na en van die skool beweeg moet hulle<br />

korrek in skooldrag geklee wees, tensy hulle sport beoefen.<br />

3. Geen juwele, behalwe ‘n horlosie, oorstafies sonder motief,<br />

klein oorringetjies (slegs vir dogters) of die “medic alert”<br />

kenteken mag gedra word nie.<br />

4. Slegs balkies of toekennings wat deur die skool toegeken<br />

word, mag op skooluniform aangebring word.<br />

HAIR:<br />

BOYS:<br />

* Hair may not be so long as to hang over the eyes at any<br />

time (i.e. when combed over the forehead).<br />

* Hair may not be so long as to hang over the ears at any<br />

time (i.e. when combed straight down).<br />

* Side-burns may not be lower than the opening into the<br />

ear.<br />

* When the learner stands erect, his hair may not touch<br />

the collar of his clothes.<br />

* Hair at back of head must be tapered.<br />

* Hair on top must be in proportion to the hair at the back<br />

and side of the head.<br />

* Hair may under no circumstances be bleached, etc.<br />

* Long hair and any extra ordinary hairstyles (afro, steps<br />

etc.) will not be tolerated.<br />

* No gel allowed.<br />

GIRLS:<br />

* Long hair must be fastened with navy blue (dark blue)<br />

ribbons, alice band or bobbles.<br />

* Short hair must be cut so that when the child bends<br />

forward the hair does not fall into the eyes.<br />

* Extra ordinary hairstyles (afro, large number of small<br />

plaits etc) will not be tolerated.<br />

* Hair may under no circumstances be bleached or<br />

coloured.<br />

HARE:<br />

SEUNS:<br />

* Hare mag nie oor die oë hang nie (d.i. wanneer vooroor<br />

gekam).<br />

* Hare mag nie oor die ore hang nie (d.i. wanneer regaf<br />

gekam).<br />

* Die bakkebaard mag nie laer as die middel van die oor,<br />

reg oor die gaatjie strek nie.<br />

* Wanneer die leerder regop staan, mag die hare nie aan<br />

die kraag van sy klere raak nie.<br />

* Die agterste deel van die hare moet geleidelik afgedun<br />

word.<br />

* Hare bo moet in verhouding wees met die hare agter en<br />

langs die kant van die kop.<br />

* Hare mag nooit gekleur word nie.<br />

* Lang hare en enige uitspattige haarstyle (“afro”, “steps”<br />

ens.) sal nie geduld word nie.<br />

* Geen “gel”.<br />

DOGTERS:<br />

* Lang hare moet vasgebind wees met vlootblou lint,<br />

(donkerblou) “alice band” of rekkies met bolletjies.<br />

* Indien hare los gedra word, moet dit so geknip wees dat<br />

wanneer die dogter vooroor buk, die hare nie oor die oë<br />

val nie.<br />

* Uitspattige haarstyle (“afro”,‘n groot aantal<br />

vlegseltjies ens.) sal nie geduld word nie.<br />

* Hare mag onder geen omstandighede<br />

gekleur word nie.<br />

CODE OF CONDUCT - LEARNERS<br />

1. Learners shall attend school for the whole of the prescribed<br />

school hours. A learner may not be absent from class or leave<br />

the school premises during school hours without the<br />

permission of the principal. In a case of absence the parents<br />

shall furnish the principal in writing with the reason.<br />

2. While a learner is under the school’s supervision, he may not<br />

harm or endanger the physical well-being of a fellow-learner<br />

and may not be in possession of weapons, toys or materials<br />

which can cause physical injury.<br />

3. While he is under the school’s supervision, a learner may not<br />

be in possession of cigarettes, drugs, alcoholic drink or<br />

objectionable material or reading matter.<br />

4. <strong>School</strong> property, or anything at the school which is the<br />

property of someone else, may not be taken, damaged,<br />

defaced or soiled.<br />

5. When the bell rings at the beginning of every day and also at<br />

the end of breaks, learners must line up in their rows at<br />

prescribed places before leading off to their respective<br />

classrooms.<br />

6. As soon as learners enter the school building, they must:<br />

6.1 be quiet<br />

6.2 walk neatly in single file, on left hand side of corridor<br />

6.3 walk directly to their classrooms. Cloakrooms must be<br />

visited during break times.<br />

GEDRAGSKODE - LEERDERS:<br />

1. Leerders moet die skool tydens die vasgestelde skoolure<br />

stiptelik bywoon. ‘n Leerder mag nie gedurende skoolure<br />

sonder die skoolhoof se verlof afwesig wees of die<br />

skoolterrein verlaat nie. In die geval van afwesigheid moet<br />

die ouers skriftelik ‘n rede aan die skoolhoof verstrek.<br />

2. Terwyl ‘n leerder onder die skool se toesig is, mag hy nie ‘n<br />

mede-leerder se liggaamlike welsyn benadeel of in gevaar<br />

stel nie, en mag hy nie wapens, speelgoed of artikels wat<br />

liggaamlike besering kan veroorsaak in sy besit hê nie.<br />

3. Terwyl hy onder die skool se toesig is, mag ‘n leerder nie<br />

sigarette, dwelmmiddels, alkoholiese drank of aanstootlike<br />

leesstof of materiaal in sy besit hê nie.<br />

4. Skooleiendom, of enigiets by die skool wat die eiendom is van<br />

iemand anders, mag nie geneem, beskadig, ontsier of<br />

besoedel word nie.<br />

5. Aan die begin van die dag en ook aan die einde van pouses<br />

moet die leerders op voorgeskrewe plekke in rye aantree<br />

voordat hulle na hul klaskamers stap.<br />

6. Sodra leerders die skool binnegaan, moet hulle:<br />

6.1 stil wees<br />

6.2 netjies agtermekaar aan die linkerkant van die gang<br />

stap<br />

6.3 reguit na hul klaskamers stap. Toilette moet<br />

gedurende pouses besoek word.<br />

7. While learners are walking in their lines, teachers must be<br />

greeted. Should an adult enter the classroom, the learners<br />

will stand, wait to be greeted, and then sit down. When the<br />

adult leaves the classroom, the learners will stand, and sit<br />

down as soon as the person has left.<br />

8. Learners may under no circumstances be in the school<br />

passages or classrooms before or after school time, except<br />

with a teacher’s permission.<br />

9. Learners may not use the main entrance to the school<br />

during school hours.<br />

10. Learners may not, under any circumstances, enter the<br />

school hall unless a teacher is present.<br />

11. Ice-cream, sweets, etc. may not under any circumstances be<br />

bought from vendors over the school fences.<br />

12. Chewing gum or bubble gum may NOT be chewed on school<br />

premises, when on an excursion or participating in any<br />

school related activity.<br />

13. Learners may not climb over the fence and may only<br />

practise on the sports fields with prior permission from the<br />

Governing Body.<br />

14. A learner shall participate in the educational programmes as<br />

prescribed by the Education Department, unless exemption<br />

has been granted by the Department.<br />

15. When a learner has voluntarily joined an extra-mural school<br />

activity, he shall fulfil his obligations and carry out his<br />

responsibilities in that connection, unless he is granted<br />

exemption by the principal.<br />

16. Learners are not allowed to ride their bicycles on the<br />

school premises. Scateboards are not allowed on the school<br />

premises.<br />

9. Leerders mag nie die hoofingang van die skool gedurende<br />

skoolure gebruik nie.<br />

10. Leerders mag onder geen omstandighede die skoolsaal<br />

binnegaan tensy ‘n leerkrag teenwoordig is nie.<br />

11. Roomys, lekkers, ens. mag onder geen omstandighede van<br />

verkopers oor die draad gekoop word nie.<br />

12. Kougom of borrelgom mag onder GEEN omstandighede<br />

op die skoolterrein, tydens ‘n uitstappie of wanneer ‘n<br />

leerder aan enige skoolaktiwiteit deelneem, gekou word nie.<br />

13. Leerders mag nie oor die heinings klim nie en mag slegs op<br />

die sportvelde oefen indien toestemming van die<br />

Beheerliggaam verkry is.<br />

14. ‘n Leerder moet deelneem aan die opvoedings-programme<br />

soos deur die Onderwysdepartement voorgeskryf, tensy<br />

vrystelling deur die Departement verleen is.<br />

15. Wanneer ‘n leerder hom vrywillig by ‘n buitemuurse<br />

skoolbedrywigheid aangesluit het, moet hy sy verpligtinge en<br />

verantwoordelikhede in verband daarmee stiptelik nakom,<br />

tensy hy deur die skoolhoof daarvan vrygestel word.<br />

16. Leerders mag nie met fietse op skoolterrein ry nie. Geen<br />

skaatsplanke word op skoolterrein toegelaat nie.<br />

17. The following offences are viewed in a serious light:<br />

17.2 neglecting to do homework<br />

17.3 telling lies<br />

17.4 arrogant behaviour and/or bad language<br />

18. No learner may show disrespect to the national symbols of<br />

the Republic of South Africa or to the codes of the school.<br />

19. No learner shall in any manner bring the name of his<br />

school in disrepute.<br />

20. No cell phones, MP3 players and I-pods etc. are allowed.<br />

GENERAL<br />

Learners transgressing any of the above rules will be punished<br />

according to the severity of the misdemeanour and within the<br />

power and authority granted to the Principal and Governing Body<br />

by the South African <strong>School</strong>s Act (no.84 of 1996).<br />

Die klerebank dryf nou handel onder die naam Pro-Shop en word<br />

as ‘n onderafdeling van die OOV bedryf. Hulle is die verskaffers<br />

van alle skooldrag, sportdrag, sweetpakke,skooltasse en<br />

sportsakke. Hulle verskaf ook tweedehandse klere. Ouers word<br />

versoek om kledingstukke wat te klein geword het, of nie meer<br />

benodig word nie, aan die Pro Shop te skenk. Skoolserpe is ook<br />

beskikbaar. “Winkelure” gedurende die skoolkwartaal is<br />

Maandae & Woensdae 12:50 - 14:00 en Vrydae 11:30 - 13:00.<br />

PARENT TEACHERS ASSOCIATION<br />

The school is proud of a very active PTA. All parents are<br />

automatically members of the PTA. An annual general meeting<br />

takes place at the beginning of the first term where the<br />

parents select a PTA committee. Four teachers, the principal<br />

and the elected PTA committee members form the executive<br />

committee.<br />

The main purpose of the PTA is to create opportunities where<br />

parents and teachers can meet formally and/or socially. Another<br />

function of the PTA is to raise funds for the school in order to<br />

improve and maintain the facilities of our school.<br />

CLASS REPRESENTATIVES<br />

At the beginning of every year one parent is selected from each<br />

class to serve as a class representative. A class representative<br />

serves on different sub-committees of the PTA for the whole<br />

year and is also the link between the teacher(s) and parent(s).<br />

OUER-ONDERWYSERS VERENIGING<br />

Die skool is trots op ‘n baie aktiewe OOV. Alle ouers is<br />

outomaties lid van die OOV. Tydens ‘n algemene jaarvergadering<br />

wat gehou word aan die begin van die eerste kwartaal elke jaar,<br />

word ‘n OOV bestuur gekies. Vier personeellede, die skoolhoof<br />

en die gekose OOV bestuur vorm die uitvoerende bestuur.<br />

Die doel van die OOV is om geleenthede te skep waar ouers en<br />

leerkragte formeel en/of sosiaal kan verkeer. ‘n Verdere doel is<br />

fondsinsameling om sodoende die fasiliteite van ons skool te<br />

verbeter of in stand te hou.<br />

KLASVERTEENWOORDIGERS<br />

Aan die begin van elke jaar word een ouer uit elke klas as ‘n<br />

klasverteenwoordiger verkies. ‘n Klasverteenwoordiger dien dan<br />

vir die volle jaar op verskeie sub-komitees van die OOV en ook<br />

as skakel tussen die leerkragte en klasouer(s).<br />
