Practice, Cape of Good Hope Region: Lecture. A lecture
entitled 'Diuretic in general practice' will be held at 20hOO
on Wednesday 16 June 1976 in the Lecture Theatre, College
of Medicine, 17 Milner Road, Rondebosch, Cape. The speakers
are Drs J. Strachan, L. Vogelpoel and l. D. Huskisson.
All interested are welcome to attend the lecture, which is

South African Geriatric Society (MASA): General feeting.
A general meeting of [he South African Geriatric Society will
be held on Thursday 17 June 1976 at 20hOO at Disa House,
Lower Orange Street, Cape Town (next door to the Mount
elson Hotel). A panel of Cape Town experts will discuss
'Aspects of geriatric care'.
As this is the first general meeting of the Society, all members
of the Medical Association of South Africa are welcome
to attend.

Medical Education: General Practitioner Education Course.
An education course for general practitioners will be held
on 5 - 9 July 1976.
Included in the programme are the following topics: ew
ideas on the management of obesity: maturity-onset diabetes;
management of chronic ob tructive airways disease and asthma
with case demon tration; recognition and management" of
chronic renal di ease; management of the neonate outside the
teaching hospital; urinary tract infections; antibiotics in paediatric
practice; febrile convulsions; poisons; significance of
vomiting in the neonate and infant; the medical acute abdomen;
management of hernia, hydrocele and undescended
testis; management of burns; records in general practice; the
emergency bag; GP-specialist communication; undergraduate
training for general practice; the GP laboratory; orthopaedic
problems in children; detection and management of bacterial
endocarditis; current statu of long-term cardiac pacing; treatment
of common arrhythmias; E IT allergy; management of
acute earache; screening for deafness in children; pain
management; cancer and the patient; oral contraception; referral
for amniocente is; active management of labour; and
iatrogenic disease in obstetrics and gynaecology.
The fee for the course is R65, which includes catering
(R55 for members of the Medical Graduates' Association).

Staff Luncheon Club. The next meeting will be held on 15
June 1976 at 13h05 in the Anatomy Staff Common Room

Professor R. E. Bemstein, Head of the Metabolic
Research Unit at the SAIMR will talk on 'A visit to the
research institutes of ew Zealand and Australia'. His talk
will be illustrated by slides.
niversity of Stellenbosch and T)'gerberg Hospital, Faculty
of Medicine: Scientific Conference. A scientific conference on
'Mankind and medicine in the third millennium' will be held
at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Stellenbosch
as part of the opening proceedings of the Tygerberg Hospital,
on 28 - 30 September 1976. The theme of the congress is
medicine and social problems after the year 2000, with the
emphasis on Africa.
About 20 prominent scientists, including doctors, economists,
and ocial scientists, will take part. Other speakers
who will take part, are from countries such as Holland,
Sweden, Finland, France, America, England and Scotland.
Many guests from neighbouring states and from the homelands
are also expected to attend the congre s.
Among the speakers who will lecture at the congress are
Dr Aurelio Peccei, founder of the Club of Rome and former
Managing Director of the Fiat Company, Dr A. Biswas,
Environmental and Planning Advisor of the Government Of
Canada and Dr M. Prywes, Dean of the Centre for Health
Sciences at the Ben Gurion University in Israel.
The Tygerberg Hospital will be officially inaugurated by
Dr . Diederichs, State President, on 1 October 1976.

American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists: Clinical
Symposium on Gynaecological Endoscopy. The American
Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists will hold its 5th
annual meeting and clinical symposium on gynaecological
endoscopy on 17 - 21 November 1976 in Atlanta, Georgia,
USA.
The programme will include laparoscopy, hysteroscopy,
fetoscopy, infertility, law and the laparoscopist, endoscopy in
oncology, endoscopy for endometriosis, and lost intra-uterine
devices. There will be general sessions, closed circuit TV and
audiovisual presentations of films and slides, panels and operative
care, as well as scientific and commercial exhibits, round
table discussions and an opportunity to meet the experts.
