NOMINATED AS BOWLS SA PRESIDENT
After four years at the helm of bowls Piet
Breitenbach, President of Bowls SA is stepping
aside. During his leadership a lot of focus was on
making the game more attractive for all.
He has set the bowl rolling and we are indebted to
Piet, who has also made a huge difference in the
bowling fraternity with his support towards the
development programme throughout the country.
The Executive have nominated Debra Ferguson
for the post and Allan Freeman from Border is their
choice for vice-president. Isabel Smith, Kallie
Haupt and Ron Weddell are also available for reelection.
We wish them well!
TRANSFORMATION
IS TAKING PLACE!
Transformation is taking place throughout the
country! It is heartwarming to read reports
received from most districts! The vibe is there! It
is really happening!
Districts realise the importance of marketing the
game to attract new members and are successfully
implementing promotional programmes, special
events, and some have wonderful ideas to market
the game. Read the full district reports under
‘Distict Despatches” in this newsletter.
School leagues are also on the cards.

Team entries are 24 Under 25 Men,
12 Under 25 ladies and 28 under 19 teams.

bowls’ glory of yesteryear; all should put their
weight behind that striving.”
A GOOD INITIATIVE BY BOWLS SA
SEPARATE TOURNAMENTS
FOR LADIES AND MEN AT THE U25s
Bowls SA must be complimented on splitting
the men and ladies into two separate
tournaments. A brilliant move! This will
certainly upgrade the skills of our young
ladies. Noticeably in the past the ladies
always ended up playing front rankers! This
tournament will give more ladies the
opportunity to participate as well. One or two
ladies teams will also represent the Bowls SA
Executive (see Bowls SA Circulars 22 and 24).
RISING STAR INTERVIEW
MIKE O’CONNOR (JNR) 18 YRS OLD
of the HARLEQUINS/BEREA BC, BGN
O’Connor’s reply to Editor’s questions:
1. One must never think that you are too young to
play bowls at a competitive level. You are going to
be successful in bowls if you believe in your own
ability and get in PLENTY of practice.
Two years ago I set a goal to make the silver
squad, I managed it and believe any guy that is
committed to the game and practices will make it
to the top. Being selected for this squad is an
honor, just to be involved with the great
management and coaching staff as well as playing
with the best young bowlers in the country is a
total thrill.

2. I started bowls at the age of eleven and I am in
grade 11 at Centurion High School.
3. I try to be on the practice green from Monday
to Friday, also spending weekends on the green
taking part in district and club competitions.
Mike’s ultimate goal is to successfully represent
the SA Open team and become the number one
player in the country. Mike says: “This is not just
a dream, I believe that anything is possible if
you put your mind to it – you’ll achieve it.”

SUID-KAAP
ONTWIKKELINGSPROJEK
Met die oog op die toekoms is besluit op ‘n
ontwikkelings-inisiatief om rolbal onder die breër
gemeenskap bekend te stel maar toe te spits op
die jeug en meer spesifiek diegene wat minder
bevoorreg is. Om volhoubaarheid te verseker,
verg dit, afgesien van toegewyde afrigting,
genoegsame fondse vir die voorsiening van
fasiliteite, toerusting, uitrusting, vervoer, ens. Daar
is dus ‘n vennootskap met die plaaslike stadsraad
aangegaan wat hulp verleen en skenkings is ook
uit ander bronne verkry.
Die projek is verder gevoer deur:
(a) Onderhoude (om samewerking te vra en
uitvoerbaarheid te bepaal) met die Depart. van
Onderwys, skoolhoofde, en sport-onderwysers.
(b) Omdat Rolbal relatief onbekend was, is ‘n kort
video vervaardig van hoe rolbal deur juniors
gespeel word. Dit is saam met ‘n video van ‘n
internasionale wedstryd aan die personeel en
leerders van vyf skole vertoon.
(c) Die teikengroep is leerders in graad tien en
moontlikes in graad nege en elf wat werklik
belangstel en bereid is om te werk en
deursettingsvermoë vertoon. Hulle moet verkieslik
nie aan ‘n ander sportsoort wat tyd verg deelneem
nie en gewoonlik het die matrieks te veel ander
verpligtinge. Die mikpunt is om daardie leerders
met besondere potensiaal end-uit te ondersteun
en op die lang termyn vir rolbal te behou.

(d) Twee skole het reeds voluit ingeskakel en na
vyf maande is daar tans 18 kinders wat gereeld
een of twee keer per week afgerig word. ‘n
Seuns- en ‘n dogterspan is ook reeds gekies om
in Julie aan die inter-distrikte onder negentien
kompetisie deel te neem.
‘n Welkome byvoordeel van die projek is die
belangstelling wat enkele skoolhoofde en
onderwysers toon om ook te begin speel en
hopelik sal die ouers ook later betrek word. Met
die entoesiasme van die huidige deelnemers en
die publisiteit wat verkry is begin ander ook nou
belangstel.
Die visie is om ‘n volwaardige Rolbal Akademie
te stig met behoorlike akkommodasie en fasiliteite.
Slegs die eerste stappe is nou geneem, dit hou
belofte in maar baie werk en ondersteuning is
nodig om die ideaal te verwesenlik.

WITH THEIR 2 nd INITIATIVE and PROJECT
‘DRIVE FOR DOUGH’
This district must be applauded for all its marketing
efforts. Go to www.bowlsgn.co.za and click on
‘Whats New’ and on Circular 78 to view BGN’s
‘Drive for Dough’ game format and rules. Click on
‘Marketing’ to view their marketing plan and goal
for 2010. They rely on all the clubs in their district
to grow 10% by 2010 from where their theme:

Their Marketing/Dev Committee decided on three
projects for the year 2009:
1. “Bring a Buddy Bowler” BGN Championships
This competition is a ”Trips“ format where the third
person has to be totally new in bowls. A club’s
winning team then qualify for the BGN “Bring a
Buddy Bowler” championships.
2. “Drive for Dough” (Cash to be won!)
This is a driving competition for the clubs where
the winners will also qualify for BGN finals. This
project is solely to promote the aggressive aspect
of bowls combined with accuracy.
3. “Shot in the Dark”
Clubs with lights will play and host evening bowls
to those clubs without lights. The format will again
be trips with the third person new in bowls. The
winners to play in the BGN finals.

Boland:
KOMMENTAAR VAN ‘JACK UP BOWLS’ REDAKSIE:
Boland het ‘n ‘ ster Distrik’ geword tov
Ontwik. Dit is verstommend om die vordering daar
te sien! In slegs 3 jaar het die getal O/19 by die
proewe van 8 tot 40 gegroei. Van 1 span in 2007
tot 4 spanne in 2009!
Baie geluk aan die Boland Uitvoerendekomitee vir
hulle goeie bestuur sowel as die afrigters en
keurders!
Leon Meyer skryf:
Boland het geweldige groei onder die onder 19‘s
gehad soveel so dat die keurders gemaklik 4
spanne kon kies vir die onder 19 toernooi in die
Suid-Kaap. Daar is besluit om hierdie jaar dit
anders te doen en het die proewe oor 2 dae gehou
by die gasvrye rolbalklub van Bredasdorp.
Die besigheidsligas gaan voort hier in die Boland
en word al hoe meer gewild. By sommiges klubs
is hulle reeds vol bespreek vir die volgende
seisoen. Verder sorg dit vir goeie inkomstes vir
die klubs.
BOLAND ONTWIKKELING DRAMATIES GEGROEI!
Kom ons kyk wat het gebeur by ontwikkeling:
2007 Boland sukkel om spelers vir die 0/19s
toernooi in Bloemfontein te kry.
2008 8 Spelers en reserwes maklik gekry
2009 Boland het meer as 40 onder-19 spelers
om van te kies.
Op 18 April het ons ‘n Weskus-Jeugdag gehou by
Langebaan Golf- en Sportklub. Daar was so 8
spelers, waarvan 5 nuwe Rooikaartspelers is.
Gedurende Mei was Boland se O/19 en O/25
proewe op Bredasdorp. Dit was ‘n riem onder die
hart om te sien dat 21 O/19 spelers deelgeneem
het. Die keurders was beïndruk met die talent en
het besluit om vier O/19 spanne te stuur.
CALEDON SE NAGREEKS: Na maande van
beplanning het die Caledon-nagreeks met groot
sukses gedurende Februarie plaasgevind.
Border Bowls: Reg Misselhorn reports:
Official opening of the Schoombee Bowls Club
The Border Bowls President, Frank Naude,
accompanied by five members of his Executive
attended, the official opening of the Schoombee
Bowls Club on Saturday 2 May 2009 which was
also attended by over 50 bowlers and guests.
The Schoombee sports facilities were originally
formed in 1937 by a local farmer and his wife, Mr &
Mrs Marais, who donated 1 morgen of land for the
sole use for sporting activities for the local farmers.

Unfortunately ready funds were not available but
the local community went ahead in good faith,
and over the past three years the farmers
contributed their time, labour and funds to
establish the new green. A new mower was
required and an appeal was made for financial
contributions at a meeting of the members, of
which R23 000 was pledged at the meeting. The
club has 33 members, 2 of whom are under 19,
one of which has given up his normal school
sporting activities to concentrate on bowls.
We can only take our hats off to this farming
community for their foresight and commitment, and
trust this great endeavour may instil a better and
stronger support of Bowls South Africa by the long
established clubs and districts.
Bowls Gauteng North: Prieur du Plessis reports
The "Bring a Buddy" is such a successful project
that BGN Clubs have thus far increased their
membership by 51 as a direct result.
A rather cold looking group shortly before the start of the
Bring a Buddy finals held on 3 May.
The average age in the district is somewhere in
the 70’s clubs need a wake up call if they plan
to be around in five years time!

‘Rolbal KOOK op die platteland’
In Beaufort-Wes (Suid-Kaap) is rolbal besig om die
dorp aan die praat te hou.
'n Sakeliga wat gehou word tussen 12 besighede
oor 'n periode van 6 weke is baie suksesvol. Die
liga word op Woensdagaande onder spreiligte
gespeel. Die verrigtinge elke aand word ook
afgesluit met 'n braai. Nuwe lede word gewerf.
Dit is belangrik vir die sukses van so 'n projek
dat die deelnemers gereeld ingelig word oor wat
hul moet doen om lid te raak, bv as hy aansluit
gedurende die liga hoef hy nie die aansluitingsfooi
te betaal en die verlaagde ledegeld is
van toepassing. Gratis afrigting word ook
aangebied.

Ons glo ook dat alle voornemende spelers eers
deur basiese lesse moet gaan. Dit beskerm ook
die speler teen een van die nadeligste dinge in
rolbal (die raad van te veel beterweters aan 'n
nuweling).
Suid-Kaap gaan ook hierdie jaar 4 onder 19 en
3 onder 25 spanne inskryf vir die junior interdistrikte
spanne wat in Julie in George plaasvind.
Central Gauteng Bowls Ass:
REINSTATING DUBE BOWLING GREEN
IN SOWETO
Fonny Meyeridricks of CGBA says: “I am hoping
that by next month we shall see some movement
on the re-opening of Dube Bowling Club in
Soweto. One of SABC TV production managers is
trying to co-ordinate efforts to get this going. This
would really be a boost for transformation and
hopefully get good media coverage.
They need bowls! If you can help please contact
Sizwe Nxumalo, on his cell 079 9967896. He is
involved with the research team that is hard at
work preparing episodes for shoot and broadcast
on SABC 1 - Zola 7 Series 8 – Thursdays – 19:00
Sizwe says: “Your positive response will go a long
way in assisting the Soweto BC to realize their
dream. The local residents have a deep desire to
see this sport revived in their community.”
Ted Keartland reports on behalf of CGBA Dev:
CGBA council recently convened a "think tank" of
clubs to investigate ways and means of recreating
interest in the sport of Bowls, it highlighted the
important part development must play in the
management of clubs. Far too few clubs take the
appointment of a development official seriously.
Eastern Province Bowls: Con Dixie reports:
EP has just gotten a new Executive Committee
and I’m hoping that someone will take on the
portfolio of development as very little has been
done for the past 2 years! I continue with the
youth bowls and try to keep that active if not
actually growing, so the development bowls we
have are constantly in use!
Eastern Gauteng Bowls: Cindy Hoffman reports
that nothing has changed in the district therefore
all’s well.
Limpopo Bowls: Rina van Wyngaard reports:
The acquisition development of bowls is high on
the agenda of all the clubs in the district.
The majority of clubs have corporate
competitions where businesses as well as other
institutions are involved. The format differs from
club to club but the ultimate object is the same.

Several clubs have sponsored yearly competitions
which attract players from far and wide and grow in
popularity due to the spirit and atmosphere in
which it is played. The Litchi Tournament of
Tzaneen, Wolkberg Tournament of Duiwelskloof
and the Winter Tournament of Polokwane are a
few examples.
An interesting feature is the Bowls club of Eiland
which is situated in a holiday resort. Holiday goers
are invited to play bowls there for the first time
after which many, on departure, express their
intention of joining bowls clubs in their hometowns.
KZNCB: Trevor Smale reports:
The Newcastle and Dundee scholars have been
very busy with the trials for the Inter-districts u/25
and u/19 tournament. We are grateful to the
coaches and selectors who assisted and/or
attended the trials.
We still need to confirm what bowling attire will be
allowed. It seems that not all Districts agree
whether they should allow these teams to wear
District colours. We hope that these issues will be
resolved soon.
Mpumalanga Bowls Ass: Dave Shearer Reports:
Bowls is still going strong on Thursday evenings at
Witbank Club. An average of between 18-24
players participate. Teams are made up of one
regular player plus 2 or 3 new bowlers and are
enjoyed by all. At present 3 new members have
been signed on and a possibility of a few more
couples joining.
On 29 April, 29 teachers from Klipfontein Primary
School enjoyed an afternoon of bowls. There is a
possibility that they as a school will ‘challenge’
other schools in this sport.
Witbank Club have issued an invitation to the other
sections of the sportsclub to an ‘inter-section’
competition, namely darts, pool and table tennis.
All participants will have to play in all four sports.
Should be great fun and another way to recycle
club members into the other sections of a
composite club. Great idea Johan – go for it.
There is a recruitment program for junior players
and a coaching/development weekend during
June at Ngodwana club.
All the above plus the weekly newspaper reports
on the activities of the Central Zone are our efforts
for recruiting more bowlers to this wonderful game!
Lowveld Sub-District Quarterly Report
LVCC held a business league where 28 mixed
teams participated, always hoping to get new
members. A team building day was also held for
Insurance Company’s and churches.

Ngodwana Club have gone out of their way to
target bowls in their small community approx 1800
residents having social events.
Natal Inland: Cynthia McDuling reports:
I am pleased to report that one of the Country
Districts Bowling Clubs (Creighton Bowling) have
managed to get two new members from their
development drive and has a further three
potentials from their Twilight Bowls. As they are
just a little club of 12 current members.
Maritzburg West held a development day and
attracted 48 bowlers, and have also signed on
two new members and 1 more potential.
We have two schools we are taking our bowling
mats to and another two schools that are very
interested so hopefully we will have more news for
you in the next Quarterly Report
Northern Cape Bowls:
Hierdie verslag is ingestuur deur mnr Piet Nel:
SCHWEIZER-RENEKE KLUB
1. Met die rolbaldag van Amalia NG Kerk verlede
jaar was daar plus minus 72 mense wat aan
hierdie dag deelgeneem het. Hierdie jaar was
daar plus minus 80 deelnemers. Dit beteken
tussen 40 en 50 deelnemers wat nie rolbalspelers
is nie! Van hierdie spelers, het daar
reeds 7 aangesluit as voltydse lede!
2. Besigheidsliga: Verlede jaar September is
begin met hierdie liga tussen besighede, kerke,
boere-verenigings en professionele mense. Daar
was aan die begin 112 mense en moes hulle in
twee groepe verdeel word. Hulle speel een keer
per maand teen mekaar en geniet dit baie.
Hierdie liga verg nogal baie organisasie maar
almal geniet dit baie. Dit het ook finansieel baie
vir die klub beteken en het reeds die ligte wat
aangeskaf is, ten volle betaal. Hierdie liga kan
slegs in die aand gespeel word.
Ontwikkeling in Kalahari-Subdistrik
Bernard Fourie skryf:
Twee spelers van Kalahari Subdistrik se junior
spelers, te wete Rikus Coetzer en Stefan is in die
Noordkaap O/25 spanne ingesluit.
Na ’n baie geslaagde besigheidsliga, waarin 48
spanne deelgeneem het, het 7 nuwe spelers by
Upington Rolbalklub aangesluit.
Sishen Rolbalklub op Kathu bied hierdie jaar die
Intersentrum toernooi aan. Die toernooi word op
’n jaarlikse basis tussen Vanderbylpark, Ellisras
en Kathu se personeel gespeel.

Die klub bied ook op ’n drie-maandlikse basis ’n
inter-seksie toernooi aan, waar die verskillende
afdelings van die myn teen mekaar meeding.
Klublede mag nie speel nie. Daar is planne om
as gevolg van die gewildheid van die kompetisie
dit na ’n twee-maandlikse kompetisie te verander.
PRIESKA BC: Esme Penderis reports:
We have a very successful business tournament
which has been running since 1994.
This tournament takes place a week after the
schools start in January. Invitations are sent to
all businesses, schools, farming associations
and private people.
The rules of the game are as follows:
1. Only one club member is allowed to play in a
fours game.
2. The club member is only allowed to play lead
or second.
3. The players may only play for one team.
4. Play commences at 18h00 and 12 ends are
played.
5. We have no restrictions to age etc.
The tournament takes place from Mondays to
Thursdays. Each team selects the day they wish
to play and it is played over four weeks. We have
12 to 14 teams each night, they really enjoy it
and there are people who have participated from
1994. We light the fires early for a barbeque and
sell “braai packs” and of course the liquid
refreshments.
We have teams playing who do not have club
members in their teams. It really is a fun
competition and teams even challenge each
other after the completion of the tournament. This
is the event of the year in Prieska and financially
this has helped us as we have been able to
enlarge our club house and this year we have had
two aircons installed.
The most important aspect of this tournament is
the fact that we have new members joining our
club each year.
Sedibeng Bowls:
Ian Morrow reports:
Since we had our Schools Tournament, interest in
Bowls has increased in our District. We now have
40/45 Juniors.
Sasol have informed us they are interested in
sponsoring this Tournament in the future.
Jana Meyer our Dev Officer, presented a very
interesting report to our District Executive. They
agreed to her request for acquiring more Dev
Bowls.

Western Prov Bowling Ass: Paul Cohen reports:
Our provincial Development committee took a
decision earlier in the year that a zonal set-up for
our clubs, numbering some forty, would lead to
a more efficient and workable system. Although
in its early stages the area has in fact been
divided up and club development officers have
taken the initiative and met to discuss their
respective clubs specific problems and possible
solutions to them. We look forward to them
reporting back to the central Development
Standing Committee, which now only numbers
four, with their findings and suggestions.
An initiative of “Bringing Bowls to Schools” has
been launched in the Tokai/Retreat/Muizenberg
area involving five high schools which will be the
start of a schools league project, this has involved
indoor mat introductory workshops being coordinated
into each schools respective curriculum
thereby managing to cover five classes per day
for three days including grades from 8-12. The
results have been most encouraging, not least the
positive response of the schools principals and
sports educators who have seen many of their
learners who normally do not partake in any sports
that have found an interest in bowls. The
aforementioned youngsters have now started to
play on local clubs greens and our Development
Committee appreciate the positive co-operation of
clubs such as Bergvliet and Muizenberg in this
initiative, we look forward to further expansion of
this project which can only be good for our sport.
The educators are also being introduced to the
sport and they are in that much sought after age
group of 30-40 year olds.
Prime examples of the success of these school
projects are to be found at Helderberg and Strand
both clubs now reaping the benefit of an active
youth development programme.
Somerset West BC: Warwick Super 10
Gerald Thompson and his team are hard at work
marketing the 4th round of the exciting Warwick
Super 10 tournament that will take place on 14
June at their club. This tournament is for under 45
players consisting of six teams of ten players
each all competing for big cash prizes. The
colourful banners and promotional material of the
sponsors create a spectacular display around the
greens and combined with the stunning attire of
the players, music in the background and food
stalls, you have the formula for a great spectators’
tournament!
Do not miss this event! You are also guaranteed a
warm and friendly atmoshere as this club is
renowned for their good hospitality.
