A Note from the Principal’s Desk
It was a great pleasure to welcome students back to school on Tuesday. We commenced
Term 2 with a moving ANZAC service which was truly an inspiring occasion. The highlight
for me was the conclusion of the service, when every student and staff member in the
College placed a poppy, prepared by MS students, 1200 in all, on the south fence of B Field,
in memory of those soldiers who have given their lives for our country.
Every time I walked past the fence this week, it prompted me to remember these people
and to thank God for their selfl ess service. It also caused me to pray for their family and
friends, that they would be comforted and strengthened by God’s love, and also for the
soldiers, who currently serve overseas, and their families.
I extend my sincere appreciation to Graeme Evans for his thoughtful and thorough
organisation of this service. It certainly helped to increase our students’ respect and
esteem for these men and women. (Please refer to the student report on our ANZAC service
on page 3.)
On the same day, a group of students represented our College at the HRIS Cross Country
event. They were enthusiastic and committed to running their personal best, and I thank
each one of them for being such fi ne ambassadors for SPCC Newcastle.
Last weekend, we welcomed home two groups who travelled overseas during the term
break. We had a Middle School group who visited Hong Kong and China under the
leadership of Graeme Evans and Belinda Williams, and a Senior School group who visited
the USA under the leadership of Amelia & Dan Gardiner (SPCC Cessnock) and Ben
Perren (report on pages 4 & 5). The feedback from these staff members indicate that
our students not only had an amazing experience, but represented our College in an
outstanding manner. I was thrilled to hear that the staff from The Dream Centre in Los
Angeles said that our group was one of the best groups that have ever served in the
centre, because they worked tirelessly, without complaint, achieving above and beyond
what the staff of the Dream Centre anticipated.
Term 2, Week 1
Such reports are very encouraging
and refl ect not only the quality of our
students, but also the willingness our
students have to embrace challenge,
and rise up on it to become stronger
and more resilient. On behalf of our
College community, I want to thank
our staff members for giving their own
time to support our students while
they undertake such life-changing
experiences, and also to all the
students for being great ambassadors,
not only for our College, but also for
our country.
The term ahead is very busy as it
not only includes countless learning
opportunities, but also many major
sporting events, NAPLAN testing and
the presentation of ‘The Sound of
Music’ by our Senior School students.
Let’s make the most of every day, and
thank God for the blessing of our lives,
and the opportunities He gives us each
and every day to live life to the fullest.
John 10:10 (Amplifi ed Bible)
I have come that you will have and enjoy
life, and have it in abundance, to the full,
till it overfl ows.
Every blessing
Anzac Day Service
ANZAC Day is a nation-wide event of remembrance and
commemoration of those who have gone to war, some to pay the
ultimate sacrifi ce. On the 30 April 2013, the Junior, Middle and
Senior sub-schools, along with staff, gathered together for our
annual ANZAC service.
After introductions to ANZAC day by Middle School Student
Leaders, three brave Junior School children performed a short
drama that helped to explain what happened at Gallipoli.
Prayers were said, and members of the Mayfi eld Waratah RSL
performed the mounting of the catafalque. Representatives of each
section of the school and our Principal, Mrs O’Dea, laid wreaths
against the catafalque. The wreaths had been made by Year 9
students.
School Captain, Lilly Gosling read The Ode, from For The Fallen, and
when she spoke the words ‘We will remember them’ and ‘Lest
we forget,’ the campus of Newcastle echoed these symbolic words.
The Australian fl ag was lowered to half-mast as Hudson Coates
played The Last Post, and after a minute’s silence to acknowledge
the lives lost in confl ict, Bryn Wilson-Kellaway played Reveille, during
which the fl ag was raised again. This was followed by the dismissal
of the Catafalque Party.
We sang the National Anthem, and as a tribute to the soldiers’ lives
that were lost, each student placed a poppy on the B fi eld fence as
they left to create a moving memorial. This ANZAC Service paid
great homage to the heroes of our country.
From April 13th to April 27th 15 yr. 10 and 11 students fl ew to Los Angeles to serve with the
Dream Center. The Dream Center has over 200 ministries/outreaches to the people of LA
and we were able to be a part of a few of them during our stay. While at the Dream Center
we were able to serve food to the homeless through a ministry called “Under the Bridge.”
We also had the opportunity to work with “Project Prevention” which is a ministry that
goes into families’ homes who were once at risk of losing their children due to not having
enough food or not having a bed and wardrobe. Dream Center has partnered with Child
Protection Services(DOCS) to ensure these families are no longer split apart by providing
what the family needs to stay together. These families are then visited and supported by the
Dream Center volunteers weekly to ensure the families are going well, their needs are met
and if necessary the parents receive education or training to get back on their feet.
Every Saturday Dream Center volunteers “Adopt a Block” in the projects by picking up
rubbish, offer homework tutoring, knock on doors to ask what the needs are in that
particular family and play with the children in the neighbourhood. We were able to serve
with that ministry a couple of times and see lives changed from families being impacted by
the Dream Center and its volunteers.
After serving with the Dream Center for a week we had some time to see the sights of
Orange County and go to Disneyland for a couple of days. During our time in LA we were
able to see the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Beverly Hills, attend a baseball game and go to
Santa Monica Pier. This enable the students to see the contrasts of in the city of LA.
Below are some of the students comments that went on the trip and their
experiences.
“My experience on the USA mission trip is one that impacted my life in so many ways. From
the second we got started at the Dream Centre, I felt so touched by all of the people we
got to serve and developed such a passion for what we were doing. To actually be there and
serve these people taught me so much about what it means to give but still feel so fulfi lled.
I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to go and serve with the people that I did, and I
sincerely thank the leaders for everything that they did for us.”
USA Trip

USA Trip Continued...
“The Dream Center provides programs for rehabilitation on
site and program’s off site for those who may be under strain
fi nancially physically or emotionally. These off site program’s
involved handing out clothes, serving food to those who may
not be able to afford it, praying for those who were in need and
loving on the community and giving back.”
-Brent Hutchin yr. 11
“The Dream Center was a major highlight on the USA mission
trip for me. It really opened my eyes to contrast in one city.
When you think of LA, you think of movie stars and rich people,
but the outreach we did with the Dream Center really showed
me how much poverty and homeless people there is in LA. Skid
Row was a great example to the poverty in LA. When we got to
walk down that road, inviting people to lunch it really made me
feel like I was working towards something great. Something that
will actually make a difference. One small step each day like that
would make a huge difference in the long run.”
-Georgia Garry yr. 10
“A group of us were on Project Prevention. We went to two
different houses and delivered food for people who had family
problems and the Dream Centre was trying to keep them
together. The fi rst house we went to was a mother of eleven,
although a few either weren’t with her or had died. She had
four children living with her, plus a grandchild, and they all had
to fi t into a tiny apartment that was overcrowded already.
Despite barely having enough room for themselves, they let all
of us come in and sit while she told her testimony. What she
had been through was like nothing you would imagine seeing
in Australia, and after hearing that, we realised how much the
Dream Centre had changed her life and her children’s lives. On
the way home, everyone was quiet, they were just thinking about
what we had heard. It makes you realise how little we have seen
and experienced, and how much even the smallest blessings can
change people’s lives.”
-Rachel Jenkins yr. 10
5 parentnewsletter - Term 2, 2013
“It was incredible to have the opportunity these holidays to
travel to the US as part of the Los Angeles Mission Trip. Working
with the Dream Centre was such an eye opening experience,
and seeing the generosity and joy of people who have so little
really challenged everyone in our team. Working in some of the
most underprivileged suburbs of LA, we really gained an insight
into poverty in the fi rst world, and of what we can do back in
Australia to make a difference in our world. It was great to be
able to fi nish the trip off with a few days at Disneyland and
around Hollywood. Thanks so much to Amelia, Ben and Dan, our
three amazing leaders, who made the trip so enjoyable. We’ll
never forget our time in America, I know I’ll be back soon.”
-Lachlan Pickering
“The USA mission trip 2013 was a life changing experience
which I was lucky enough to be a part of. We witnessed some
amazing things such as families coming together after years of
being apart. There was much heartache throughout the team as
we saw homelessness throughout the streets of LA, however
we were able to help by serving hot meals and provide food for
people struggling. We got the opportunity to play with smiley
and outgoing children and brighten their day up, as much as they
brightened ours.”
-Sophie Hanlon yr. 10
“The dream centre was the major highlight of the trip, my
favourite part would be doing adopt a block. My group walked
around the houses to pick up rubbish, our leader then knocked
on a door of one of the houses which she frequently visits. At
that house we met Elijah and Jeremiah and their two sisters.
We then took Elijah, Jeremiah and one of the sisters to the
gym to play basketball; I got to know Elijah and quickly became
close friends with him. Georgia, Elijah, Jeremiah and I started
playing tag on the playground and gave the boys piggybacks in
the gym. Later on the whole group came together and prayed
hand in hand. The dream centre was a great experience where
I have become more independent in wanting to help my own
community by taking note from the dream centre’s work being
done in Los Angeles. “
