Who treats the tap water
supplied to all of Gauteng?
Rand Water. There are 16
water boards in South Africa
of which Rand Water is the
largest. Rand Water supplies
approximately 10 million
people and 50% of the
country's industry with water.
Who supplies tap water to
our homes?
Metropolitan councils and
local authorities buy treated
water from Rand Water and
supply this water via their own
network of pipes to your

Where does water treated
by Rand Water actually
come from?
The Vaal Dam, which was
b u i l t i n 1 9 3 6 a n d i s
approximately 22m deep at
the dam wall. The area
supplying the Vaal Dam
consists mostly of agricultural
and rural settlements with
v e r y l i t t l e i n d u s t r y .
Consequently the quality of
the water flowing into the dam
is very good.
Do rivers such as the Klip
and Suikerbosrand affect
the Vaal Dam water quality?
No - these rivers enter the
Vaal River downstream from
the Vaal Dam and are not
connected in any way.
Name the four chemicals
used by Rand Water to treat
water?
Lime, Sodium Silicate,
Carbon Dioxide and Chlorine.
Which chemical is used to
keep harmful bacteria out
of tap water?
Chlorine is added to kill
harmful bacteria in water.
These bacteria may result
in diarrhoea which is
classified amongst the
greatest killers in the world.
However, concern has
been raised about chlorine
causing cancer. This
should be seen as a
relative risk. One may
stand more of a chance of
contracting cancer from
exposure to sunshine, than
that of drinking chlorinated
water. Water that is not
disinfected with chlorine
may pose a more serious
health risk.

No - certain harmless
bacteria are naturally
present in water just like
you have natural bacteria
on your body and in the air
y o u b r e a t h e . T h e s e
harmless bacteria should
not be present in high
numbers though infants
and sensitive users may be
affected. Chlorine plays an
important role in ensuring
these numbers are low and
remain low right up until the
tap in your home.

sometimes white when it
comes out of the tap?
Air bubbles - due to the
high pressure in the
distribution system, any
trapped air in the system
will become dissolved in
the water. As soon as the
pressure is released by
opening the tap, the
bubbles reform, giving the
water a white appearance.
If you pour a glass of water
and allow it to stand, the
water will clear from the
bottom upwards as the air
leaves the water.
What is the natural
fluoride level in tap

0.2mg per litre - this level
occurs naturally in the

magnesium tend to settle out
of the water, causing scale to
form on kettle elements and
in pipes. This scale forms a
protective layer in pipes,
kettles and geysers, thereby
preventing corrosion.
Why does tap water
sometimes have a musty
earthly smell?
Geosmin is present in the
water, This is a non-toxic
substance released by bluegreen
algae. Blu-green algae
grow well in the summer
months due to the longer
daylight hours, increased
water ternperatures and high
nutrient levels. The algae
releases th is non-toxic
substance into the water and
it is difficult to remove it via
conventional water treatment
m e t h o d s . I n o r d e r t o
overcome this problem,
Rand Water has built an
activated carbon plant to
remove this odour from the
water.
Is my tap water safe to
drink?
Yes - Rand Water's treatment
process produces water of a
quality that complies with the
most up to date international
quality standards.
Who tests my water?
Rand Water and some local
authorities - Rand Water
performs approximately 1.2
million tests on water
samples throughout its area
of supply on a yearly basis.
These results need to comply
with certain guidelines

Do I need to install a home

bottled water?
No - tap water is perfectly

healthy to drink just as it is. If
you do not like the taste of
t a p w a t e r , t h e n a n
inexpensive activated
carbon jug may alter the
taste. However, the correct
maintenance of this jug is
crucial in ensuring safe
drinking water.
Can tap water tests be
performed in my own
home?
Depending - certain tests
are possible to do in the
home, but bacteriological
analyses are performed in a
s p e c i a l ( s t e r i l e )
environment. These are
very important tests as they
tell you whether the water
contains harmful bacteria.
People marketing home
treatment devices are
known to use what is called
the "jam jar" experiment.
This experiment involves
one set of electrodes
suspended in tap water and
another set suspended in
demineralised water. A
current of electricity is
applied across these
electrodes. Tap water, which
contains minerals, is a good
conductor of electricity. The
current will flow and the iron
electrode literally starts to
dissolve in the water,
causing a browny green
suspension to form. Water
which does not contain
m i n e r a l s , s u c h a s
demineralised water, is not a
good conductor of electricity.
Therefore a current will not
flow and the iron electrode
will not dissolve. Do not be
fooled.

dating from the last years of
the reign of Augustus actually
mentioned a "meat-market".
The Christians in Corinth
were allowed to make their
purchases in these shops
without scruple. "Whatsoever
is sold in the shambles, that
eat", is Paul's advice to the
church in 1 Cor.10.25.
At the marble steps of the
Propylaeum the excavators
found a heavv stone lintel on
which they were able to
decipher the words "Hebrew
Synagogue", clearly cut out in
Greek letters. The house in
which Paul proclaimed the
new doctrine must have stood
beyond the colonnade in the
region of Lechaeum street.
For "he reasoned in the
synagogue every Sabbath,
and persuaded the Jews and
the Greeks" (Acts 18.4).
Among the ruins of the
numerous dwelling houses in
the same quarter of the city
must certainly be those of the
house of the Justus with
whom Paul lodged, "whose
house joined hard to the
synagogue" (Acts 18.7).
Finally the archaeologists
found in the market place a
raised platform, on which a
Latin inscription indicated that
it had been the rostra, the
judgement-seat. "And when
Gallio was the deputy of
Achaia, the Jews made
insurrection with one accord
against Paul, and brought him
to the judgement-seat,

possible to establish the
exact time that Paul spent
in Corinth. Lucius Junius
Annaeus Novatus Gallio -
which was the governor's
full name was the worthy
offspring of a highly
respected family. His
brother, Lucius Annaeus
Seneca, the great Roman
philosopher and tutor of
Nero, dedicated two books
to him.' And the poet
Statius called him the
"beloved Gallio".
In old Delphi a letter of the
emperor Claudius came to
lightfrom which it appeared
that Gallio must have been
in Corinth from A.D. 51-52.
The letter contains the
words;: L u c i u s J u n i u s
Gallio my friend the
proconsul of Achaia,
wrote....and is dated at the
beginning of the year 52.
According to a decree of
Claudius newly appointed
officials had to leave Rome
for their provinces on June
1. Gallio must therefore
have arrived in Achaia
about July1, A.D.51.
Paul "continued there a
year and six months;
teaching the word of God
among them" (Acts 18.11)
until the jews became
incensed and dragged him
before the governor. Thus
it is highly probable that the
apostle went to Corinth at
the beginning of A.D. 50.
Two years after the
cricifixion of Christ the
fanatical persecutor of the
Christians, Saul of Tarsus,

Christianity (Acts 6.3ff) .
Almost exactly thirty years
later the great missionary
and evangelist embarked
upon his last journey, this
time as a prisoner. In
Judaea Festus had been
procurator since A.D. 61.
He sent PauI to Rome to
face a serious charge in the
custody of the centurion
Julius (Acts 27.1). There
Paul was allowed "'to dwell
by himself, with a soldier
that kept him" 'Acts 28.16

Cephas" "(John1.42)
Cephas is Petros in Greek,
and means "a rock". Thus he
became one of the first of
Jesus' disciples. After the
death of Jesus, Peter was
the first apostle to convert
pagans (Acts10) . Peter was
the leader of the first
Christian community in
Jerusalem and Judaea and
later extended his activity
beyond Palestine. Two of his
letters to the Christians of
Asia Minor remind us of this.
In St. John's gospel there is
a dialogue between Jesus
and Peter which refers to the
kind of death he would die at
an advanced age.
"When thou wast young,
thou girdedst thyself. and
walkedst whither thou
wouldest : but when thou
shalt be old, thou shalt
stretch forth thy hands, and
another shall gird thee, and
carry thee whither thou
wouldest not.- This spake
he, signifying by what death
he should glorify God. (John
21.18-19)
Legend and church tradition,
in story and writing, connect
up with this meagre New
Te s t a m e n t u t t e r a n c e
concerning Peter. They tell
of his martyr's death in
Rome, they specify the
place where his bones were
laid to rest: Under the high
altar in the Basilica of St
Peter.

Elkeen van hierdie babas was
deur hulle ma's weggegooi.
Hulle is opgetel op die trappe
van kerke, vuil met nog 'n
naelstring aan uit vullisblikke,
half verdrink en vol slik uit
damme uit, in die kraamsaal
net so gelos.
Ag, maar hierdie kinders was
stroopsoet. Gedurende die
shoot het daar nie een
piepgeluidjie vanuit enige van
die bedjies gekom nie. Net
daar met groot oë gelê.
Nadat ek klaar geskiet het, die
te klein verpleegsterskoene
afgeruk het en die laag op
laag grimering afgeskrop het,
stap ek toe na my motor toe.
En daar sien ek die mooiste
prentjie! Julle moet onthou dit
was in die laat 80's. Al langs
d i e m u u r v a n d i e
hospitaalgang net buite die
babasaal het omtrent 20
vroue in 'n netjiese ry gesit op
donker rooi plastiekstoele.
Die vroue, almal wit. En elke
een het gesit en speel met 'n
babatjie op haar skoot.
Weggooibabas. Dogtertjies
en seuntjies wie se ma's hulle
nie wil of kan hê nie. En ek
onthou die weerkaatsing
van die wintersonnetjie wat

van die vroue se velle
afgeëts teen die sjokoladebruin
van die babatjies in
hulle skote. Dit het wragtig
gelyk soos 'n prentjie uit die
Kinderbybel uit! Ek het
gewens ek het 'n kamera
gehad.

gewoonlik kinderlose

meisie in die duine sal gaan

vir hom nie.
Hierdie tabletjie is dus nie vir
normale mense soos ek en jy
nie. Ons huil, maar nie té
hard nie.
