80 years for Mater Children’s Hospital
A lot has changed in the past
80 years but one thing that has
remained the same is Mater’s
dedication to exceptional service
and quality treatment of its
patients.
2011 marked 80 years since
Mater Children’s Hospital
officially opened its doors.
When the hospital started
treating children in July 1931,
its 80 beds were occupied
immediately and in its first
year of operation the hospital
admitted more than 1200
patients and saw more than
7000 outpatients.
Now Mater treats in excess
of 100 000 children each year,
including approximately 42 000
emergency presentations and
58 000 outpatient visits.
To mark this milestone a special
celebration was held with the
Sisters of Mercy and guests to
thank staff, patients and medical
officers for their ongoing
contribution and support.
