In comb<strong>in</strong>ation with o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong>vestigations on movement, habitat use, genetics and<br />
population size, this <strong>in</strong>formation will help evaluate <strong>the</strong> potential impacts <strong>of</strong> hydroelectric<br />
development. However, it is recognized that s<strong>in</strong>gle, short-term population assessments<br />
can be difficult to <strong>in</strong>terpret due to natural fluctuations <strong>in</strong> recruitment, chang<strong>in</strong>g<br />
environmental conditions and selectivity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sampl<strong>in</strong>g gear. Inherent biological<br />
characteristics <strong>of</strong> longevity, delayed maturation and <strong>in</strong>frequent spawn<strong>in</strong>g make this<br />
species highly susceptible to losses and slow to rebound from low population levels<br />
(ASRD, 2002). The cont<strong>in</strong>uation <strong>of</strong> a more frequent, long-term assessment program is<br />
recommended to evaluate and/or model future population levels and trends, especially if<br />
development proposals proceed.<br />
