Was there ever an alternative to the coast road to<br />

Sim<strong>on</strong>’s Town – <strong>on</strong>e from Tokai over the Steenberg<br />

mountain? Old written accounts, serious investigati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

and some maps and paintings suggest that there was<br />

indeed a passable route. This talk reviews the evidence<br />

and attempts to unravel this mystery.<br />
