Borders
26 October to 30 January 2011
Borders presents a distillation of work from the
Bamako Encounters 8th African Photographic
Biennale, 2009. Mali’s pan-African exhibition is
travelling for the first time to sub-Saharan Africa,
providing South Africans with a unique opportunity
to engage with contemporary photography from
across the continent and its diaspora. The show is
curated by Michket Krifa and Laura Serani.
Most of the borders of African states recognised
today were drawn by the European imperial
powers during the Berlin Conference in 1884.
The often-arbitrary delineation of territories has
provoked conflicts around issues of sovereignty,
the distribution of economic resources or ethnic
grouping. Repressive methods are used to counter
the migration flows set in motion by political
turmoil or economic hardship, while immigrants are
usually perceived as ‘other’, foreigners viewed with
suspicion and distrust – as was experienced in the
xenophobic violence in South Africa in 2008. Yet, a
border is also a place of meeting and exchange. It
may be seen as a space for transformation, and a
real or imagined territory of openness, while forms
of transgression may be perceived symbolically as
‘crossing’ borders.
In Borders, 40 photographers and 13 video artists,
including several South Africans, engage with
the concept, whether interpreted in terms that
are geographical, political, social, aesthetic or
metaphysical.
Home and Away: A Return to the South
Curated for the Ifa Lethu foundation
15 October to 30 January 2011
The Ifa Lethu Foundation has been instrumental in
repatriating South African art produced during the
apartheid years that ended up overseas due to the
fact that there was no local market for the work of
black South African artists at the time.
The exhibition Home and Away: A Return to the
South explores this previously lost artistic heritage.
Curated by Carol Brown, the show examines
the similarities and differences between works
produced by South African artists experiencing
the oppression of apartheid, and artists from
beyond our shores who created works in support
of the struggle. Although produced from different
perspectives, the two collections are united in their
focus on human rights.
The Ifa Lethu works are being shown for the first
time in a major exhibition, together with a selection
of works from the Art Against Apartheid exhibition
housed at the Mayibuye Centre at the University
of the Western Cape. The showing of these works,
previously exhibited in Parliament, coincides with
the university’s 50th anniversary. Some of the
artists featured include Joe Tilson, Ernest Pignon-
Ernest, Robert Rauschenberg, Fikile Magadlela,
Dumile Feni and Winston Saoli.
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue.
A Vigil of Departure - Louis Khehla Maqhubela
A Retrospective 1960–2010
27 October to 13 february 2011
Louis Maqhubela’s exposure to European artists
and abstract painting offered him a decisive means
to break out of the conventions and stylistic
mannerisms of a genre labelled ‘Township Art’.
This new direction meant the end of figurative
expressionism and the beginning of a personal
engagement with modernist abstraction. His
work became less about recording views of his
environment and more about using line, form,
shape and colour as expressive means in and of
themselves.
The freedom euphoria of 1994 gave renewed
impetus to the artist’s work, both thematically
and technically. Curator, Marilyn Martin, writes,
“In spite of trials and challenges he faced during
his life, Maqhubela’s art is characterised by a
profound humanism, inner joy and affirmation of
life; [his works] spring from a deep spiritual and
metaphysical well.” The exhibition assesses Louis
Maqhubela’s (1939–) place in, and contribution to,
South African art history. It is a public reminder of
a great artist, and returns Maqhubela from
obscurity to re-inscribe him into this country’s
history of art.
This exhibition is a slightly edited version of the
exhibition held at the Standard Bank Gallery in
Johannesburg.
Mapping Bo-Kaap: History, memories
and spaces
Opens 14 October
Mapping Bo-Kaap: History, memories and spaces
showcases the findings of a mapping survey
project undertaken in the Bo-Kaap a few years ago.
Residents of the Bo-Kaap were asked why they
enjoyed living in the area, and to identify areas
that have special heritage significance for them.
The exhibition summarises the main findings of
the survey, and includes a number of historic and
contemporary photographs of the neighbourhood,
then and now. In this way a glimpse into the history
of the area is provided. The exhibition will be on
permanent display in the community hall.
Enquiries: Katie Mooney, Tel. 021 481 7215
8 October to 31 October
The contemporary art exhibition, Echoes, is part
of an international cultural exchange project,
involving James Webb of South Africa and the
Australian artist, Philip Samartzis. Currently the
Senior Lecturer in Sound at the RMIT University in
Melbourne, Samartzis is regarded as being at the
forefront of Sound Art internationally.
In bringing his art to South Africa, and showing
it with James Webb’s work, the project enables
audiences to engage with a notable example of
contemporary art that may not otherwise be
experienced. The project is curated by Jared Davis.
Birdlife South Africa has formed a collaboration
with Iziko for this year’s Save our Seabirds Festival
(SOS), which runs during National Marine Week. The
aim of the festival is to raise awareness of the role
of seabirds in marine ecosystems and the threats
they are exposed to. The festival includes a varied
education programme, as well as three evening public
lectures by top seabird experts (Dr Rob Crawford,
Dr Peter Ryan and Dr Phil Hockey).
Also on dispaly is an exhibition of photographs
resulting from the Save our Seabirds Photographic
Competition. Judging by the photographs submitted
for the 2009 competition, a display of top class
photography that is well worth a visit can be expected.
Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2010
9 December to 13 March 2011
This exhibition showcases the very best photography
featuring natural subjects. The competition is owned by
two UK institutions that pride themselves on revealing
and championing the diversity of life on Earth – the
Natural History Museum and BBC Wildlife Magazine –
and is brought to South Africa by NHU Africa.
Being placed in this competition is something
that wildlife photographers, worldwide, aspire to.
Professionals win many of the prizes, but amateurs
succeed too. And that is because achieving the perfect
picture combines skill, vision, originality, knowledge of
nature, and luck. Each year the thousands of entries
are judged by a specially selected expert panel. The
exhibition offers an extraordinary insight into the
beauty, drama and diversity of the natural world.
Roger Ballen and Boarding House
6 November to 16 January 2011
The photographs of Roger Ballen stand apart
from those of his contemporaries in their intensity
and beauty, their enigmatic quality and sense of
impending violence.
Born in the United States, Roger Ballen grew up
with the work of great modern photographers,
through his mother’s work with Magnum and her
gallery in New York. Ballen’s photography in South
Africa began when he started travelling through
‘dorps’ (small rural towns), where rural white
communities showed evidence of poverty and social
collapse. Although continuing to use many of the
same people as subjects, in the late 1990s he began
to work less in a documentary style and more like a
choreographer or director.
In Ballen’s most recent body of work, Boarding House,
his photographs evince a sense of the theatrical,
a tension between the fictional and constructed,
and that which is absolutely real and present at
the moment he exposes the photograph. In the
imaginative worlds that Ballen creates, puppies, rats,
wire, drawings and old furniture perform roles within
the claustrophobic confines of a door-less stage that
are part-tragic, part-comedic, and wholly disturbing.
The Iziko SA National Gallery shows Boarding House
together with a small show of photographs from
earlier bodies of work, including Dorps, Outland and
Shadow Chamber.
Made in Translation
Images from and of the Landscape
21 November to September 2011
Paintings and engravings are everywhere in the
southern African landscape. They are the creative
expressions of ideas that were once alive in the
conversations around the campfire and in the rites
of passage that marked the milestones of human
life. Today these paintings and engravings have
become sources of great longing, their meanings
elusive; the impulses that gave rise to them often
hotly debated.
Rock art copies are seen as acts of translation,
primarily translating the ‘unboundedness’ of
the paintings as they exist in the landscape, into
the framed image of the copy. The exhibition
showcases a diverse range of translations including
the works of copyists from the mid-19th to early
20th centuries. A collection by Leo Frobenius
who explored southern Africa with a team of
ethnographers and artists between 1928 and 1930
reveals the remarkable large-scale copies his
project produced. Included in the exhibition are
copies by, amongst others, George Stow, Helen
Tongue, Dorothea Bleek, Joseph Orpen and Charles
Schunke. It also includes insights of contemporary
scholars, historical and contemporary photographs,
and translations of San texts and stories.
IzIkO SLAVE LODGE
Mandela: Leader, Comrade, Negotiator, Prisoner, Statesman
Until December
This groundbreaking exhibition celebrating the life
and times of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela opened at
the Slave Lodge on 11 February to coincide with the
20th anniversary of his release from prison in 1990.
Nelson Mandela was central to every stage of South
Africa’s epic struggle against apartheid – from
formulating a new approach to the struggle in the
1940s, to leading the mass struggle of the 1950s,
from the formation of Umkhonto we Sizwe in the
early 1960s, to imprisonment for 27 years. He
served as the first President of a democratic South
Africa, according him the iconic accolade of ‘Father
of the Nation’.
The exhibition traces how Mandela built a new
nation from the fragments of conflict, making
full use of the ‘weapons’ at his disposal: love,
persuasion, forgiveness and acute political acumen
– with a fair amount of self-deprecating humour
thrown in for good measure. It is a rich and nuanced
account of the great man’s story. Mandela’s
extraordinary life is explored in thematic sections:
character, comrade, leader, prisoner, negotiator
and statesman. Within each theme, the narrative is
presented through visual wall displays, supported
by films.
Produced by the Apartheid Museum in collaboration with the
Darwin and the Cape
Ground floor
Ongoing
2009 saw the 200th anniversary of the birth of
Charles Darwin, as well as the 150th anniversary
of the publication of his book, On the Origin of
Species. His theory on the evolution of life through
natural selection provided a scientific foundation
for understanding how life diversified on earth,
and it is the theory that holds biology together.
Darwin visited the Cape in 1836 on his journey
around the world aboard the HMS Beagle. He
corresponded with naturalists at the Cape, including
previous staff of the South African Museum. This
Travelling at the speed of light may sound incredibly
fast, but can you imagine travelling at the speed of
light for hundreds or thousands, even millions of years?
When we look up into the night sky, we see light that
has been doing just that. We can even see galaxies
as they were when mammal-like reptiles roamed the
Karoo. This presentation juxtaposes past eras on Earth
with their equivalent eras far out in space.
Living Inside the Cosmic Egg
Tuesday evening – 20:00 (& sky talk)
Saturday & Sunday – 14:30 (excl. 25 December)
On a clear night you cannot see forever, even with the
most powerful telescope imaginable. The observable
universe ends abruptly at an opaque wall, created by
the conditions that followed the ‘big bang’ beginning.
That wall appears to surround us – forming the shell of
a hollow sphere, with us at the centre – a ‘Cosmic Egg’
that contains all of our universe. It is populated with
billions of galaxies, each a gigantic city of stars in itself,
each star probably having its own solar system.
explain the nature of stars and the galaxy in
Groot Constantia: Historic Precinct
The farm, Groot Constantia, dates back to 1685,
when the land was granted to Simon van der Stel –
thus making it one of the oldest wine farms in South
Africa. Its Orientation Centre in the Jonkershuis
complex uses panel, object and archaeological
displays to give an overview of Groot Constantia
from the past to present, including slavery on the
estate. Carriages are on display in the Coach House
and in the historical wine cellar, while the Wine
from antiquity to the early 20th century. The Manor
House, with its exhibition of furniture, paintings,
IzIkO kOOPMANS-DE WET HOUSE
Koopmans-De Wet House
Koopmans-De Wet House – the oldest house museum
in the country – was originally built as the home for
a well-to-do Cape family during the late 18th century.
It boasts some of the best pieces of Cape furniture
and silver in the country, in addition to a priceless
collection of ceramics. A household such as this
would only have been able to function with the aid of
servants and slaves. Recent research has brought to
light the names and professions of some of these, as
well as the kinds of activities they would have pursued.
The house opened its doors as a museum in 1914, after
the deaths of its last private owners, Marie Koopmans-
De Wet and her sister Margaritha. Marie Koopmans-De
Wet, after whom the Museum is named, is renowned
for aiding orphans and widows of the Boer republics
during the South African War.
IzIkO RUST EN VREUGD
Rust en Vreugd
Rust en Vreugd was built as a home for Willem
Cornelis Boers, a high-ranking official of the VOC
(Dutch East India Company) known as a fiscal,
around 1777–1778.
The house was built on Cape Town’s outer limits
(thus the name of the street – buitenkant or outer
edge) in the transitional area between town and the
larger market garden farms of the upper part of
the city. After Boers, the property passed to several
other private citizens. In 1878, the house was
bought by the Dutch Reformed Church and served
as a teachers’ training college; the Cape Town High
School occupied the property from 1925–1957; and
in the early 1960s it was restored and converted
into a gallery space. A second restoration took
place in 1993, and more recently, disabled access
facilities were installed.
In 1965, William Fehr donated his private collection
of works of art on paper (watercolours, prints and
drawings) to the people of South Africa. This gift
is housed at Rust en Vreugd. Due to the sensitive
nature of artworks on paper only a selection of the
works is on exhibition.
IzIkO AT THE CASTLE Of GOOD HOPE
William Fehr Collection
The Fehr Collection was assembled by businessman,
William Fehr (1892–1968). His first passion was
collecting paintings, prints and drawings related to
South Africa, but he later expanded the collection
to include decorative art objects such as furniture,
glassware and ceramics. The objects date from the
17th to 19th centuries and reflect the furnishings of
well-to-do, mainly Cape urban households.
One of the remarkable aspects of the collection is
the large number of oil paintings that depict views
of the Cape colonial settlement and Table Bay
maritime scenes. Though these artworks reflect a
colonial worldview, they are fascinating reflections
of life at the Cape, and the people, both free and
enslaved, who lived and worked here.
IzIkO MARITIME CENTRE
Maritime Centre
The Iziko Maritime Centre provides an overview of
shipping in Cape Town. Images depicting Table Bay
from the 17th to 20th century give an idea of the
development of the harbour. Exhibitions include
the earliest existing model of Table Bay harbour,
completed in 1885 by prisoners and wardens of the
nearby Breakwater Prison, and a collection of ship
models and objects associated in particular with the
era of mail ships. An exhibition of images, ship models
and objects gives insight into the Union-Castle Line
and shipwrecks around the Cape coast.
The John H. Marsh Maritime Research Centre provides
an archive of nearly 20 000 photographs, depicting
9 551 ships dating from the late 1920s to the early 1960s.
