<strong>Tboli</strong> missile weapons <strong>are</strong> generally made of y<strong>an</strong>tok (ratt<strong>an</strong>) <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> bamboo, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> tipped<br />

with br<strong>as</strong>s arrowheads or spearheads. While there <strong>are</strong> special applications for the<br />

different types of bows <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> spears, these <strong>are</strong> not usually decorated.<br />

It is in their bladed weapons that the <strong>Tboli</strong> focus their decorative skills. <strong>The</strong> sudeng<br />

or swords have long blades <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> hilts made of hardwood called bialong. <strong>The</strong> types of<br />

sudeng <strong>are</strong> the l<strong>an</strong>ti, whose br<strong>as</strong>s hilt is ornamented with geometric designs <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> 5centimeter<br />

lengths of chain with tnoyong attached to their ends; the tedeng, which h<strong>as</strong><br />

no decoration; the kafil<strong>an</strong>, a bololike sword; <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> the tok, which, because of certain<br />

ritual <strong>as</strong>sociations, is the most decorated of <strong>Tboli</strong> sudeng. <strong>The</strong> tok h<strong>as</strong> a 60-70<br />

centimeter single-edged blade decorated with geometric designs, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> a richly<br />

ornamented hilt with 5-centimeter lengths of chain attached to its edge, with hawkbells<br />

at their ends. <strong>The</strong> tok’s scabbard is made of wood held together by three to four<br />

metal b<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>s. A geometric design is etched on the black surface, which is highlighted<br />

by the wood’s natural light color. <strong>Tboli</strong> kabaho or knives <strong>are</strong> <strong>as</strong> richly decorated <strong>as</strong> the<br />

tok <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> come in a variety of shapes <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> sizes.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Tboli</strong> metalcraft tradition distinguishes <strong>Tboli</strong> culture <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> is linked to Ginton, the<br />

god of metalwork, who occupies a stellar place in the <strong>Tboli</strong> p<strong>an</strong>theon. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Tboli</strong>,<br />

however, give no indication of having ever possessed <strong>an</strong>y knowledge of mining their<br />

own metals. Whatever metal there is to work on comes from scraps that the <strong>Tboli</strong><br />

m<strong>an</strong>age to get. Thus, in the c<strong>as</strong>e of br<strong>as</strong>s or bronze, there <strong>are</strong> no st<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ard alloy<br />

proportions. Copper w<strong>as</strong> once obtained from one-centavo coins, while steel came<br />

from the springs of trucks ab<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>oned along some highway in the lowl<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>s.<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Tboli</strong> forge of gunu lumubon h<strong>as</strong> afos lubon (bellows) made of bamboo cylinders<br />

70 centimeters high <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> 15 centimeters in diameter, which have ratt<strong>an</strong> pistons fitted<br />

with chicken feathers at the end of each piston head. Air comes from a 5-centimeter<br />

diameter bamboo section attached to the bottom of the afos lubon; held at the other<br />

end by the kotong lubon <strong>are</strong> stones which surround the furnace. <strong>The</strong> tau m<strong>as</strong>ool<br />

(smith) tempers the metal in this furnace <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> beats this with a solon (hammer) on a<br />

lend<strong>as</strong><strong>an</strong> (<strong>an</strong>vil).<br />

After the initial forging, the blades <strong>are</strong> honed <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> polished with whetstones <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

further tempered over the fire. Once the b<strong>as</strong>ic blade is complete, it is decorated with<br />

br<strong>as</strong>s or copper inlays or etched with geometric designs.<br />

For artifacts with more intricate designs such <strong>as</strong> sword hilts, betel nut boxes, girdle<br />

buckles, <strong>an</strong>klets, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> hawkbells, the cire-perdue or lost-wax method is used.<br />

Beeswax is applied over a clay core until the desired thickness is achieved; this r<strong>an</strong>ges<br />

from 1 to 3 millimeters. <strong>The</strong> designs of rows of uniform tri<strong>an</strong>gles, double spirals<br />

(S-shaped), cord-b<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>s, <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> other geometric figures <strong>are</strong> impressed on the wax original,<br />

while kneaded wax cords <strong>are</strong> attached in high relief onto their proper places in the
