Grade 7 hopefuls taking the entrance test.
Cao oks lateral entry, UPIS to accept 14 new freshies

Last February, UP Diliman Chancellor,
Dr. Sergio Cao approved the reopening of
lateral admission at Grade 7 (1st year high
school) to fill the slots to be vacated by
Grade 6 students who have been accepted
and have opted to enrol in Science High
Schools.
The order specifies five slots for varsity
scholarship (basketball) and the rest (nine
slots for the coming school year) for general
admissions procedures.
Chancellor Cao’s action was in response
to appeals by the UP Maroons
coaching staff to allow them to recruit players
for the junior basketball team from
other schools.
Lateral admission at Grade 7 was suspended
several years ago by then Chancellor
(now President) Emerlinda Roman citing

-10 para sa taong pasukan 2009-2010. Ginanap
ito noong Marso 10 para sa 7-10,
Marso 11 para sa 3-6, at Marso 12 para sa
K-2. Naging panauhing tagapagsalita sa
Grado 7-10 si Dr. Eugene Y. Evasco, Batch
1993, isang Palanca awardee at propesor
sa Departamento ng Filipino at Panitikan
ng Pilipinas ng UP Kolehiyo ng Arte at Literatura.
Kabilang sa mga nakai-“inspire”
na tagubiling ibinigay ni Dr. Evasco sa
mga mag-aaral ang mga praktikal na tip na

downsize the student population of laboratory
schools of state colleges and university.
This led to the UPIS Faculty's decision
to suspend varsity admissions two years
ago.
According to the guidelines released by
the UPIS Admissions Committee, nonvarsity
applicants should be currently enrolled
in grade 6 or grade 7 (in institutions
offering elementary education up to grade
7). They should also have an average grade
of 85% (or its equivalent in another grading
system) for the first three quarters of this
school year.
An admission test was administered to
these applicants last March 28, 2009.
The guidelines for varsity admissions
have yet to be issued by the committee
tasked to handle the matter.

Speculations end, DPWH widens Katipunan

Speculations about the widening
of Katipunan Avenue in front of the
UPIS 7-10 campus ended Thursday
(February 12, 2009) when the Department
of Public Works and Highways
(DPWH) set up markers to mark the
future site of UPIS' perimeter fence.
After a meeting with Vice Chancellor
Grace Gregorio, the Campus Architect,
DPWH representatives and the
contractor, UPIS Principal Dr. Aurora
Zuñiga, informed all concerned UPIS
stakeholders (through a letter dated
February 12, 2009) about the extent of
the construction that will take place.
According to Dr. Zuniga, a perimeter
fence will be built 10.5 meters
away from the nearest buidling
(Buidling 1). The fence will cover the
entire frontage of the UPIS 7-10 cam-

Ang seremonya na ito ay muling binuhay

lahat ng kanilang napag-aralan CAT – I.
Humigit kumulang sa 50 kadete ang
nagpakita ng kanilang liksi at galing sa
pagmartsa at paghawak ng rifles sa
nasabing seremonya kung saan matapos

reasons, construction of the perimeter
fence will be finished before
the road widening.
A pedestrian overpass or foot
bridge will also be constructed across
Katipunan at Quirino Street (the street
between Narra Residence Hall and the
College of Home Economcs). To ensure
the security and safety of UPIS students,
faculty and staff who will use
the foot bridge, the bridge will start
inside the perimeter fence. Also, the
bridge will be constructed in such a
way that security guards on the UPIS

that will be affected.
DPWH estimates that the project
will be completed in only three
months so expect heavier than usual
traffic in front of the UPIS until April.

UPIS to hold seminar in summer

UP Integrated School will hold a
seminar-workshop for private elementary
school teachers, dubbed Upgrading
Instructional Skills of Teachers
(UPIS Teach), at the UPIS 7-10 grounds
on April 18 and 19.
The two-day seminar will feature
teaching strategies aimed at improving
the instructional skills of the participants
in different subject areas.

Ang taunang Scouts Parade ay
muling isinagawa noong Pebrero 24,
2009 at dinaluhan ito ng iba’t ibang
unit ng mga iskawt ng UPIS, kabilang
ang KAB Scouts, Star Scouts, Boy at
Senior Scouts, Junior at Senior Girl
Scouts. Ang gawaing ito ang naging
handog ng Scouting Movement ng
UPIS sa pagdiriwang ng Diliman
Month, sa pangunguna ng UPIS Scouting
Committee (UPISCOM), katuwang
ng KABALIKAT Foundation. Ang Chancellor
ng Unibersidad ang taunang
panauhing tagapagsalita sa gawaing
ito.
Nagmartsa ang mga iskawt mula
UPIS 3-6 building patungo sa Quezon
Boy Scout Annual Camp, Ginanap

Pebrero 20, tumulak ang 54 na
Boy Scouts kasama ang kanilang limang
Troop leaders, patungong Philippine
Marines Base Camp sa Ternate,
Cavite upang doon ganapin ang taunang
camp ng UPIS Scouting Movement.
Kasama ng mga girl scouts, tumungo
sila sa kampo ng Marines sa
Fort Bonifacio para sa isang courtesy
call. Dito nagkaroon ng maikling programa
kung saan ipinakita ng mga Marines
ang isang Silent Drill. Dito ipinakita
nila ang disiplina, pagkakaisa at
kooperasyon ng pangkat. Matapos ang
programa, inilibot ng ilang mga Marines
ang mga scouts sa paligid ng
kanilang kampo. Tumulak na sa Cavite
ang grupo pagkatapos ng programa.
Nagkaroon ng pagkakataon ang
mga scouts na makihalubilo sa mga
marinong nagsasanay at nag-aaral
doon. Tinulungan silang tumawid sa

ay natuto silang gumamit ng flash light
bilang signal sa pamamagitan ng

Maliban sa mga natutunan nila
mula sa mga Marines, natuto din ang
mga scouts na makisama sa kanilang
mga kapwa. Natutunan din nilang
makipagtulungan sa kanilang kapwa sa
mga gawaing itinakda sa kanila tulad
ng pagluluto, pag-iigib, paglilinis at
paghuhugas ng pinagkainan. Nagkaroon
din sila ng pagkakataong magsaya

Ito ang unang pagkakataon na
nakasama ang mga grade 4 scouts sataunangl
camp ng boy scouts simula
nang nalipat ang grade four mula sa
KAB Scout papuntang Boy Scout. Ito ay
isang dagdag na responsibilidad na
nagampanan naman ng mga nakakatatandang
boy scouts.
Sa kabuuan ay naging matagumpay
ang taunang camp, salamat sa
tulong ng mga guro at magulang na
umalalay sa mga boy scouts.

Munti's Annual Presentation

The Teatrong Munti of the UPIS K-2 had its
annual presentation last December 12 at the
UPIS High School Multi-Purpose Hall.
In line with the UP Centennial celebration,
Teatrong Munti members from the UPIS K-2 performed
dances from the main islands of the Philippines.
With the "Noon at Ngayon" as the presentation's
theme, Kinder Teatro members danced to
"Itik-Itik" and "Magtanim ay Di Biro".
Grade 1 Teatro members, on the other hand,
din an interpretative dance of “Tubig” by Joey
Ayala and performed Ati-Atihan with the music
Kalipay.
Grade 2 Teatro rendered interpretative
dances of “Salidumay” by Grace Nono, “Asik” (a
royal dance in Mindanao), and “Sa Ugoy ng
Duyan”. The event ended with the song and
dance interpretation of Bamboo’s “Pinoy”.

Amihan Abueva, guest speaker at
graduation rites
Pamela A. Razon
Ms. Amihan Abueva of batch 1975 will
be the guest speaker at UPIS’ graduation
rites on April 20. Ms. Abueva is currently the
Regional Coordinator of Asia Against Child
Trafficking (Asia ACTs) and the President of
End Child Prostitution, Child Pornography
and Trafficking of Children for Sexual Purposes
(ECPAT) International, a global network
of organizations and individuals working
together for the elimination of child
prostitution, pornography and trafficking.
Recently, she received the William
Wilberforce Leadership Award, underwritten
by the John Templeton Foundation. This
is a recognition given to an individual with a
remarkable ability to shape history and to
change for the better a world moving toward
freedom for all.
UPIS Alumni Homecoming
Vilma M. Resuma
The UP Integrated School held its annual
alumni homecoming last December 13
at UP Bahay ng Alumni. Silver jubilarian
Class 1983 hosted the affair while Classes
’58 of UP High and UP Prep, the golden
jubilarians, were the guests of honor.
The very first batch of outstanding
alumni were recognized and awarded.
Members of the different celebrating
batches also performed in the program.
UPIS Coffee table book launched

The school’s coffee table book, UPH-
PEIS@92: Alay ng ng UPIS sa Sentenaryo,
was launched at the alumni homecoming
last December 13. The Office of Research,
Development and Publication (ORDP)
spearheaded the production of the book,
while alumni batches and families sponsored
its publication.
In her message, President Emerlinda R.
Roman described the book as “a testimony
to the many accomplishments of the UPIS.
In a sense, the UPIS itself is UP’s contribution
to the advancement of education as a
tool for building a strong nation.”
Copies of the book are still available at
the ORDP at P700.00 per copy. Proceeds
are earmarked to fund the different research
and publication projects of the
ORDP.
Pagsaludo sa Isang Mahusay na Guro
Ma. Roda M. Tejuco
Isang mahusay na guro sa Edukasyong Pangkalusugan at Pananaliksik,
si Dr. Catalina Salazar. Nagtapos siya ng kursong BSEEd (Major in Health)
sa Pamantasang Normal ng Pilipinas. Sa loob ng mahigit tatlumpung taon
sa serbisyo, si Ma’am Taling ay buong pusong nag-alay ng kanyang serbisyo
at talento sa kanyang mga mag-aaral at kapwa guro.
Kilala rin si Ma’am Taling bilang isang huwarang iskawt lider. Binigyang
pagkilala ng UPIS Intitutional Scouting Committee (ISCOM) ang kanyang
tapat at buong pusong serbisyo sa pagpapaunlad ng scouting movement
sa ating paaralan. Si Ma’am Taling ay hindi nagsasawa sa paghikayat
at paghubog ng mga KAB iskawt at Boy iskawt na maging matapat at kapaki-pakinabang
na miyembro ng paaralan at pamayanan.

Si Ma’am Taling ay isang -silent rusher, minsa’y nakikigulo at nakikitawa
sa mga usapin nina Chico at Delamar, mga radio jockey ng programang
Morning Rush sa RX 93.1. Mahilig din si Ma’am sa mga Koreanovelas.
Lagi siyang updated, madalas ay advanced pa nga tungkol sa
mga bagong release na mga palabas.
Bukod sa pagkain at inumin, madalas din magbigay si Ma’am Taling
ng mga payo at words of wisdom sa aming mga batang guro. Ang mga ito
ay nagsilbing gabay at pinagkukunan ng aming lakas ng loob at tiwala sa
sarili. Lubos naming pinahahalagahan ang mga ito.
Mahilig rin si Ma’am Taling sa musika. Sa katunayan, siya ay nag-aaral
ng voice lessons sa ilalim ng Music Extension Program ng Kolehiyo ng
Musika dito sa ating Unibersidad. Nagkaroon na siya ng dalawang recital
na dinaluhan ng mga malalapit na tao sa kanya. Naging inspirasyon siya ng
maraming batang guro na ipagpatuloy ang paglinang ng sariling mga
kakayahan at talento.

I support the decision of the UP
Chancellor to allow LATERAL ENTRY.
First, this will enhance the academic
competition among UPIS students.
It is expected that those who
will be admitted are academic achievers
in their respective schools. Only
those with 85% or higher are qualified
to take the entrance test. I suppose
the 9 qualifiers for this year are
the cream of the crop and will give
the “originals” a fair challenge in academic
field.
Second, this will fill the slots vacated
by excellent Grade 6 students
who were admitted to science high
schools. If you lost the top 9 students,
you have to replace them with students
with equally or more superior
genes. Pag walang ipalit na kasing
galing ng mga umalis, magkakaroon
ng “brain drain”.
Third, this will improve the UP-
CAT performance of UPIS. According
to the official UPIS statement, students
who enter at kindergarten have
45% chance of qualifying in the UP-
CAT. On the other hand, those who
enter at grade 7 have a 75% chance
of qualifying. I think what prompted
the UP Chancellor to allow again this
lateral entry is the disappointing performance
of UPIS students in the UP-
CAT in recent years. This year, ang
sabi, only around 40 percent from
UPIS G-10 passed the UPCAT.

But the reform should also cover
the UPIS Kindergarten Admission
Test. THERE MUST BE A UNIFORM
CUT-OFF SCORES for children of UP
Personnel and children of Non-UP
personnel. I gathered from an earlier
posting in this website that in the
2008 UPIS Kinder admission test, the
lowest score of accepted children of
Non-UP personnel is 45 (that's out of
50 questions). Actually, 33 applicants
got score of 46 and above, while 26
applicants got score of 45. Only 7 of
the 26 (with score of 45) were admitted
to complete the quota of 40.
On the other hand, the lowest
score of accepted applicant children
of UP Personnel is just 29 (out of 50
questions). Clearly, UPIS is accepting
at Kindergarten less than stellar performers
from the children of UP personnel
to fill the quota. (This is the

Now, if it is true that only 40% of
UPIS G-10 examinees passed the UP-
CAT this year, it is good to know who
are these UPCAT passers--- how many
are children of Non-UP personnel and
how many are children of UP personnel?

This year, the UPIS Girl Scouting
movement adapted its theme from the
hit TV program "Survivor". The 134
girl scouts (30 juniors, 76 seniors, and
28 cadets) are indeed survivors in their
own respect.
They travelled for long hours, endured
the intense heat of the sun,
slept in tents, and coped with their
patrols all for the honor of being a girl
scout and all these happened during
the GSP Annual Camp from February
20 to 22 at the Philippine Marine Base
in Ternate, Cavite.
Of course, the three-day camp
would not have been successful without
the activities carefully planned by
the cadets under Prof. Portia Dimabuyu's
guidance.
Day 1
En route to the camp site, the
team of scouts dropped by Fort Bonifacio
for a courtesy call to the marine
commandant who generously welcomed
the scouts to use the Marine
Base grounds and facilities for free! In
the afternoon of the first day at the
camp site, marine officers gave a lecture
on land navigation and orienteering.
The girl scouts were also given the
chance to use the navigating instruments
and techniques during their
orienteering exercise. At night, the
cadets facilitated the overall sensory
test to enhance the scout's sensory
skills towards their environment.
Day 2
The physical agility of the scouts
was put to test through rope courses,
r a p p e l l i n g , a n d m o u n t a i n -
trekking. Towards the end of the second
day, the scouts had their campfire
to give way for their creative performances,
bravery test to help overcome
their fears, and the “Scouts’ Own” to
give scouts their personal moments of
silence while communing with nature
and its Creator.
Day 3
After getting a little rest, the
scouts woke up to a challenging yet
fun amazing race. This was followed by
water activities at the beach. They also
made crafts out of the trash they collected
all over the area which gave
them opportunity to practice recycling.
Shortly before departure, an awarding
ceremony was done to recognize outstanding
scouts and to show appreciation
to those who facilitated the camp.
In a random interview two days
after the camp, scouts expressed what
their most unforgettable experiences
were and what they learned during the
camp. According to Junior Scouts Rani
Ailyna Domingo and Rielle Ruiz, they

GSP Annual Camp 2009
Castro, a senior scout, came to realize
that “mahirap pala ang buhay ng mga
marines…” She also thought that the
skies are rather beautiful to look at in
the province than in the city. Sarah
Romero learned the value of hard
work and caring for Mother Earth.
Gidell Palos, a scout cadet, understood
that enormous time, collective
effort, detailed planning, and careful
implementation, are just few of the
requirements for having a smooth and
successful undertaking. She also discovered
through their little chats and
“bull sessions” a rather disturbing fact
that UPIS scouts, as young as they are,
are confronted with problems that
seem too serious for their age.
Asked what makes titas (faculty
escorts and advisers) committed to
scouting, the titas said letting the
scouts experience camping and helping
scouts learn the values of the GSP
were worth their sacrifices.
This year’s GSP Annual Camp
proved once more what difference
scouting could make to the lives of the
young.

These are the highlights of activities
involving faculty and students of the UPIS
Department of Science for the second half
of academic year 2008-2009.
UPIS’ B.E.S.T.
The Department of Science, with its
thrust of promoting excellence in basic
science education, extended its arms to
science teachers of other schools in Metro
Manila through a seminar-workshop with
the theme “Building Excellence in Science
Teaching”, held on December 6 and 7,
2008 at the UPIS New Building. The twoday
event began with plenary sessions on
Higher Order Thinking Skills given by Prof.
Rachel Ramirez, and Habits of the Mind by
Prof. Sheryl Lyn Monterola. Researchbased
strategies, current classroom practices,
integrative activities, and improvisation
techniques learned and acquired
through years of teaching and research
were then modeled by the department’s
faculty. The participants were distributed
to parallel session groups as follows: 32
Elementary Science; 11 General Science, 17
Biology, 13 Chemistry, and 11 Physics.
The participants went home inspired
and satisfied, giving the workshop an overall
rating of 4.5 based on a 1-5 scale in
which 5 is the highest.
Also, from this group of organizers
and participant teachers, the Organization
of Elementary and Secondary Science Educators
of the Philippines (OESSEP), Inc. was
born. Prof. Ramirez was elected president
during the first organizational meeting held
right after the closing program of UPIS’
B.E.S.T.
International Year of Astronomy
The International Astronomical Union
and the United Nations Educational, Scientific,
and Cultural Organization initiated a
global effort declaring and celebrating
2009 as the International Year of Astronomy.
In our country, the Astronomical
League of the Philippines held the First
Philippine Astronomical Convention last
February 15 (coinciding with Galileo Galilei’s
birthday) at the Rizal Technological

University. Science Society members and
faculty who attended the convention were
enlightened and entertained with lectures
from speakers including Dante Ambrosio,
Ph.D., a physicist and historian from the UP
Diliman College of Social Sciences and Philosophy’s
History Department who talked
about Etno-Astronomiya ng Pilipinas, and
the famous Christopher Go, a member of
the Hubble Space Mission, who talked
about the Red Spot Jr. of the planet Jupiter.
A public stargazing session in the evening
highlighted the event. The same star
viewing event was supposed to be held on
April 2-5 at the UP Sunken Garden but was
postponed due to weather conditions. This
was part of the global event 100 Hours of
Astronomy when government agencies and
individuals bring out their telescopes at
nighttime on their selected dates for anyone
who would want a view of the cosmos.
Science Clubbing Day
The UPIS Science Club had its science
trip at the Philippine Science Centrum in
Marikina City in the morning of February
16. A total of 64 club members and eight
faculty and student teachers were fascinated
by the interactive displays from
which they learned how tidal waves and
cyclones are generated, what their weights
are in the different planets, and why optical
illusions occur. The Science Club officers,
with the leadership of the Committee
Chairman Joshua Philip Suarez, conducted
the SCImazing Race and Tower-Building
Challenge in the afternoon.
BASF Kids’ Lab
On February 26 and 27, students from
grades three to six attended the BASF
(Badische Anilin- und Soda-Fabrik) Kids’ Lab
at the Bulwagan. The program aimed to
raise the students' interest in science and
instill environmental awareness in young
minds through hands-on chemistry experiments.
This effort originated from Germany
and is one of the Sustainable Development
activities of BASF The Chemical
Company. Science faculty, student teachers,
and Science Society members were
trained and served as facilitators for the
fun and safe experiments. Based on the
comments written by the students on
stickers, the activity was so enjoyable that
they’re even requesting to have more of
this in the future.
Science Congress 2009
To recognize the efforts and skills of
students in doing their year-long investigative
projects, the Science Congress was
held on March 5, 13 and 20. The Science
Congress serves as a venue for students to
present their scientific research outputs,
may it be a simple investigation of phenomenon
or a more complex creation of
new products or processes thru experiments.
Their oral communication skills
were also enhanced during the final judging.

Science Interschool Competitions
The department also takes pride for
having students who bagged numerous
distinctions and prizes in different competitions
this school year, the latest of which
were the Grand Champion award won by
the team of Fancisco Moreno, Senando
Angelo Santiago,and Marqui Niño Allan
Lopez in the First Philippine Science Centrum
Science Exhibit from the Youth Project,
and awards won by Dominic Bautista,
Joseph Tamayo, and Ann Elizabeth Rollon’s
team (Team B, First Place) and Ruth Joy
Magno, Senando Angelo Santiago, and
Marion Ivy Coronel’s team (Team A, Second
Place) in the UP Pre-Medical Honor
Society Caduceus Cup 2008.
The department brings its concerted
efforts to succeed in its endeavors of making
science learning as fun and meaningful
as possible for the students. Indeed, a
