Sobel Scholarship attending: Campbell University, Alabama support for coast guard families One of the most challenging aspects of life in the Coast Guard is balancing responsibilities of family and duty. Because of these challenges, the Coast Guard Foundation supports families in various ways, including college scholarships for children of enlisted personnel and education grants for enlisted members and their spouses. In 2011, the Foundation provided more than 780 enlisted men and women and their spouses with grants worth $220,000, helping them attain the dream of a college education. Last year alone, children of enlisted personnel were awarded 79 scholarships; representing a $200,000 investment in the future of Coast Guard children’s lives. The scholarship program is made possible by generous contributions from individuals, corporations and foundations around the country who believe in the importance of higher education. The Foundation maintains several named scholarships, including the Sobel Scholarship Program, named for the Foundation’s first higher education champion, Coast Guard Reserve Rear Admiral Arnold I. Sobel, a founding officer of the Foundation who wanted to find a way to support the children of enlisted men and women serving in the Coast Guard. “It’s a really big honor that my dad served in the Coast Guard. He’s my hero.” J. Christovich Scholarship, both of which also benefit dependents of enlisted personnel. The Cantin scholarship was founded by the commander’s brother-in-law, Stephen Wilcox, who started the fund in honor of Commander Cantin’s distinguished Coast Guard career. One of the most profound ways the Foundation supports Coast Guard children and spouses in education is through our Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund. This scholarship benefits families of Coast Guard personnel who die in the line of duty. This is the first fund established for supporting the higher education needs of families whose loved one makes the ultimate sacrifice. The Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund was established by John and Delinda Statts in memory of John’s parents, Captain Frederick Statts and his wife, Sara. In addition to these programs, the Foundation also offers education grants to active duty enlisted personnel and their spouses. In 2001, Roy Vander Putten, a Foundation director and former enlisted member of the Coast Guard, created the Vander Putten Education Grants, which are renewable grants for up to four years to help enlisted Coast Guard members buy textbooks, school supplies, and other necessary materials for their education that aren’t covered by Coast Guard tuition assistance. profile: audrey gill, fallen heroes scholarship recipient Audrey Gill is a recipient of the Fallen Heroes Scholarship. Audrey’s father, AM1 Michael Gill, was killed while flying a rescue mission in California. She has just finished her second year of college at the University of Georgia, in Lawrenceville. She said her scholarship is “definitely helpful — college is expensive and it’s getting more expensive.” Audrey, who received a $20,000 scholarship in 2010 that will be disbursed over four years, was just three years old when her father died, so her memories of him have been mostly passed down from her mother, Donna. However, Audrey has letters from her dad that she reads often, as well as pictures and stories from her father’s friends to help keep his memory alive. One of her most prized possessions is a wooden rocking horse that her father made “completely from scratch” as a Christmas gift for her. “My dad was a car person, a mechanic. He was always fixing everything around the house, but I didn’t get that gene,” Audrey joked.
