“I support Waltham Forest Cinema 

Trust because as a woman who 

has chosen to set up and run my 

business, to raise a family here 

and play an active part in a vibrant 

Walthamstow community, I find it 

almost criminal that 10 years after 

making Walthamstow my home 

and my place of business that we 

still don’t have a cinema and that 

people have to travel outside of the 

borough to see films. Screen 17 do 

an admirable job but it’s just not 

enough for a growing community and 

their choice of films does not always 

reflect the cultural diversity of the 

borough. 

“The situation with the EMD cinema 

is frankly depressing. It reflects 

poorly on all involved in the long and 

sorry saga including the council, the 

church who purchased the building 

who appear to be using their position 

to leverage funds, and any other 

‘blocking’ stakeholders who clearly do 

not understand the level of support 

and passion that many residents 

and business owners have for an 

independent cinema. The battle 

for the cinema must be costing us 

taxpayers a sizeable amount in legal 

fees for the council alone. 

“Given the diversity of this community, 

we all lose out from the lack of an 

entertainment hub that doesn’t rely 

on the sale of alcohol, gambling, 

small children only or 18+ only 

entertainment. Is it right that 

Walthamstow is the only London 

borough without a cinema? 

“I can promise you that an independent 

cinema would be a sustainable and 

critical addition to Walthamstow’s 

day and night time economy. It would 

bring residents closer together by 

providing a new hub for entertainment 

as well as drawing in new people from 

outside of the borough.
