ON OUR COVER
The starPhoenix and Tourism saskatoon are pleased to present
an original work of art by local artist inger DeCoursey on the
front cover of this edition of Hot Times. The painting, on display
at the Darrell Bell Gallery, depicts the Taste of saskatchewan
Festival in saskatoon.
Inger DeCoursey was born in Camrose, Alberta and received her
Bachelor of Education at the University of Alberta in 1956. After
teaching for several years she decided to return to school to study
art. After her studies, Inger stayed
in Saskatoon, and steadily gained
a reputation for her paintings that
depict life in the city. She finds
inspiration in a range of things,
from everyday scenes to the many
festivals that take place throughout
the year. Her work is vibrant and
energetic, beautifully capturing the
moments and spaces that make
each event unique.
Inger continues to live and paint in
Saskatoon. Her work is represented
in the collections of the
Government of Saskatchewan, City
of Saskatoon, Saskatoon Board of
Education and the Saskatoon Club.
Do you have vacation déjà vu? A recent Canadian travel survey
conducted by cheapflights.ca found that 80 per cent of Canadians visit
the same vacation destinations and engage in familiar activities over
and over again.
Make this the summer to break out of your vacation rut and
discover the unique experiences that await in Saskatoon.
“Saskatoon has grown and evolved into one of the premier vacation
destinations in western Canada,” says Daryl Demoskoff, director of
markets and advertising with Tourism Saskatoon.
From thrilling national calibre sports action to a thriving arts and
culture scene, Saskatoon is the stuff vacation memories are made of!
ACTION ZONE
Join the thousands of cheering fans in Saskatoon when the 2013
MasterCard Memorial Cup takes to the ice at Credit Union Centre from
May 17 to 26. The quest for the cup brings together finalists from the
Western Hockey, Ontario Hockey and Quebec Major Junior Hockey
Leagues, along with hometown favourites - the Saskatoon Blades.
“This is one of the biggest hockey events in Canada and is sure to
provide fantastic sporting action for Saskatchewan residents as well as
visitors from out of province. As the local hosts, we’re very pleased to
have our local team, the Saskatoon Blades, competing for the national
championship,” says Demoskoff.
Enhance your Memorial Cup experience by visiting FanFest, just a
saskatchewan’s only CaZa-accredited zoo, the
saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo is a
favourite family destination. This year, the park is
celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Forestry
Farm. Photo: Tourism Saskatoon
short walk from the arena. FanFest offers great food, live music and entertainment, as well
as interactive games and displays for the kids.
Saskatoon is a new stop on the five-city Subaru Western Triathlon Series, with a race
date set for June 30. “It’s the first time this event has been hosted in Saskatoon and is sure
to draw a lot of interest from across the western provinces,” says Demoskoff.
Athletes will swim at Pike Lake Provincial Park, bike into Saskatoon, and then run
along the Meewasin Valley Trail to the finish line. A total of 500 elite and recreational
athletes are expected to participate in the race, which will serve as the Saskatchewan
championship and a qualifying event for the national team.
July 4 to 7, top professional golfers from across North America will arrive in
Saskatoon for the Dakota Dunes Casino Open, now one of eight stops on the brand new
PGA Tour Canada. “We’re very pleased to have the PGA Tour Canada Dakota Dunes
Open here. This is the launch of the PGA Tour Canada and will turn the spotlight on
the Dakota Dunes Golf Links, recognized as one of the top courses in Canada,” says
Demoskoff.
The golf tourney is one of four major events taking place in Saskatoon that weekend!
Also turning up the fun that weekend will be the Canada Remembers Our Heroes Air
Show and Saskatoon Pets in the Park.
Festival fun extends all summer long in Saskatoon, including the PotashCorp
Children’s Festival (June 2 - 5), the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival (June 21 - July
1), the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival (July 10 - August 25), the PotashCorp
Fringe Theatre Festival (August 1 - 10), the Saskatoon Ex (August 6 - 11), Folkfest
(August 15 - 17) and the PotashCorp Fireworks Festival (August 30-31) - just to name a
few!
ARTISTIC FLAIR
Saskatoon boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene, ranging from acclaimed galleries to
lively music venues.
The visual arts have never had a higher profile in our city. Anticipation is growing
as construction is set to begin on the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan. The gallery,
located at River Landing, will be the largest in the province. Its permanent collection
already includes the world’s finest collection of linocuts by Picasso. The collection of 405
prints has an estimated value of $20 million and was donated to the gallery by the Frank
and Ellen Remai Foundation.
The Affinity Gallery, located on the main floor of the Saskatchewan Craft Council on
Broadway Avenue, is the province’s only public exhibition gallery dedicated solely to the
celebration of fine craft. The gallery showcases artists working in a wide variety of media
including fibre, clay, metal, wood and glass.
nasCar racing action returns
to saskatoon July 16 and 17. The
Velocity Prairie Thunder 250 is
one of Canada’s premier stock
car racing events, attracting top
race car drivers and teams.
The Mix Artists’ Collective Gallery is housed in a charming
character house in downtown Saskatoon, at 539 24th Street East, just
behind Knox United Church. The gallery features works by local artists
and, as a collective, makes connections with writers, musicians, actors
and other members of the arts community.
Other outstanding Saskatoon galleries include the nationally
acclaimed Mendel Art Gallery and Civic Conservatory, Handmade
House, Glenn Scrimshaw Gallery, Collectors’ Choice Art Gallery, Clay
Studio Three Pottery Studio and the Darrell Bell Gallery.
FAMILY FUN
This year, one of Saskatoon’s favourite family attractions - the
Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo - marks a special anniversary.
The Forestry Farm got its start 100 years ago as the Sutherland Forest
Nursery Station, and over the years, distributed 147 million trees to
prairie farmers. Centennial celebrations will take place Sunday, May 26,
offering a full afternoon of old-fashioned fun including entertainment,
wagon rides, games and historical demonstrations.
“The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo is definitely one of
the city’s key family attractions. It’s the only CAZA-accredited zoo in
Saskatchewan,” says Demoskoff. “We consider ourselves very fortunate
to have such a great facility in Saskatoon that attracts families from
across the province.”
A new family attraction in Saskatoon is The Prairie Lily, the doubledecked
river boat launched last June by Shearwater River Cruises. The
Prairie Lily can accommodate 119 passengers, rain or shine, on the
canopied upper deck and enclosed climate-controlled lower quarters. The
Prairie Lily offers one-hour sightseeing cruises twice a day, along with
delicious dinner cruises on Friday and Saturday evenings, and a Sunday
brunch cruise. “The Prairie Lily showcases the city in such a unique way.
A visit to Saskatoon is not complete without a tour aboard The Prairie
Lily,” says Demoskoff.
LET US ENTERTAIN YOU!
THE baRN playHOUSE
• KOLD Radio: Whitefish Bay
• Chaps
For the first show of its summer season, The Barn Playhouse
presents a zany romantic comedy set in a small town radio
station, KOLD Radio: Whitefish Bay, June 12 to 16 and June 19 to
23.
“KOLD Radio” broadcasts from the corner of a tiny café in
Whitefish Bay where fishing is a way of life. Sparks fly when Lars’
talk show about ice fishing loses all its sponsors to Martha’s talk
show about books. To make matters worse, the “fish-out-ofwater”
new owner from New York City fires Lars and promotes
Martha to Station Manager! It’s the beginning of a zany battle
with Lars fighting for his job, his dignity and Martha‘s affections!
“This comedy is totally silly, entertaining and refreshingly
unique! It really reels in the laughs!”
The Barn Playhouse’s second summer show is an hilarious
musical comedy, Chaps, running August 21 to 25 and August 28
to September 1.
This one is a rollicking good time, an old-fashioned variety
show with a twist! The year is 1944, and America’s favorite
singing cowboy Tex Riley and his troupe are late for a special
broadcast at the BBC in London. Out of sheer desperation, the
tour manager and the young producer grab whomever they can,
slap them into costume, hand them scripts and shove them in
front of the studio audience. The resulting performance is one
you will never forget! This hilarious romp brings new meaning to
“The Show Must Go On!”
The Barn Playhouse opens Wednesday through Saturday
evenings at 5:30 p.m. with food booths, live music, horse-drawn
wagon rides and the Craft Barn. Show time is at 7:30 p.m. On
Sundays, the yard opens at 12 noon with the food booths and
other activities; show time is 2 p.m.
The Barn Playhouse is located 25 km north of Saskatoon on
HISTORY, ART & CULTURE
COME TO LIFE!
TRaIlS OF 1885
The Northwest Resistance took place on the
prairies and parkland of western Canada in the spring
of 1885. Its story is told in chapters everywhere from
Winnipeg in Manitoba to Fort Saskatchewan in Alberta.
Much of this real life drama played out right here
in Saskatchewan, where Métis and First Nations each
have their own stories of confrontations and battles
with government forces as well as the subsequent
fallout and its impact on Canadian history.
These stories are told at locations ranging from
major interpretive centres to remote meadows and
hillsides where solitary historic markers recount an
almost mystical past. Find out more about the sites
Visitors and city residents alike are delighting in a new way to see
Saskatoon - aboard The Prairie Lily - the new flagship launched by
Shearwater River Cruises.
The double-decked classic river boat was launched early last
summer, replacing two smaller boats in the Shearwater fleet. “The
Prairie Lily takes up to 119 people - over three times the capacity of
any of our other boats,” said Peter Kingsmill, president of Shearwater
River Cruises.
The boat was built in Wisconsin in 1989 and transported to
Laughlin, Nevada, where it journeyed up and down the Colorado
River. Shearwater’s business partners - Peter and Valerie Kingsmill
and Michael and Joan Steckhan - purchased the boat last March, had it
transported to Saskatoon and re-christened it The Prairie Lily.
Guests can cruise in comfort aboard The Prairie Lily, which
features a canopy-covered bridge deck and two climate-controlled
lounges on the saloon deck. “It’s a much better experience for anyone
who comes on board because she’s so spacious. There are two full
washrooms, a bar, and a galley for food preparation and service,” said
Kingsmill.
“The cabin space is flexible. You can seat 80 people for dinner
down on the main deck, or seat two groups of 20 or 30.” As a result,
The Prairie Lily is gaining popularity as a venue for corporate lunches,
meetings, workshops, weddings and anniversaries.
With its new season scheduled to begin May 18, The Prairie Lily
will offer one-hour sightseeing cruises twice a day, at 4 p.m. and 6:30
p.m. as well as a 2 p.m. matinee cruise on Saturdays and Sundays.
On Friday and Saturday evenings, The Prairie Lily offers dinner
cruises, featuring delectable three-course meals that vary from prime rib
to chicken oscar.
“Every Sunday, we offer a Sunday brunch cruise that leaves the
dock at noon and returns at 1 p.m. It’s a hot buffet brunch, with items
like freshly made omelettes and waffles. It’s really popular,” said
Kingsmill.
Whether you opt for a one-hour sightseeing excursion or a
leisurely dinner cruise, you’re sure to be entertained and informed. The
Prairie Lily travels under four of Saskatoon’s eight bridges, alongside
manicured riverbank parks and past some of the city’s most opulent
residences and fascinating architectural icons. Carefully researched
commentary about the river, its history, local landmarks and cultural
highlights both inform and entertain passengers.
“We really focus on the river itself. This year, for example, we are
travel this river. You’d be surprised how many steamships there were
on this river back in the late 1800s. We talk about the sinking of the
steamship The Medicine Hat, the landing of the Northcote from the
1885 Rebellion. People learn about the bridges, their design and when
they were built,” said Kingsmill.
“The commentary runs at a comfortable, non-pressured pace
throughout the cruise. We use a GPS-triggered commentary so they’re
getting the right information at the right site. The skipper may choose
to embellish that commentary with some daily specific information.”
The commentary is broadcast only on the upper deck. Passengers
who want to simply sit back and enjoy the scenery can do so in the
tranquility of the lower deck.
Last summer, The Prairie Lily welcomed 16,032 passengers,
including city residents, visitors from across the prairies and from as far
away as Saudi Arabia, Britain, the Ukraine and the United States.
“We were absolutely delighted with the reception that we received.
We think the city is ready for something like this,” said Kingsmill.
That’s a pretty good group of people to serve at lunch and after work.”
Saskatoon’s downtown is unique in offering an exciting mix of
both independent, locally-owned eateries as well as restaurants that
are part of national chains. “Downtown has proven to be an area
where individuals who are entrepreneurial and want to run their own
restaurants have an opportunity to do so. Even inside our hotels for
the most part, the restaurants are not franchise restaurants,” says
Scadden.
Having such a large cluster of popular dining spots keeps traffic
flowing into downtown, day and night. “If you want to have a vibrant
downtown, it has to be vibrant for more than the work day. There are
lots of downtowns in North America that are busy and vibrant from
8 to 6, then they die after that. Saskatoon is not like that. It can be as
difficult to get a parking space in downtown Saskatoon after 6:00 p.m.
as it was to get in the afternoon,” says Scadden.
“We have the kind of vibrancy downtown in the evening that big
cities like Vancouver and Montreal have. That’s because there are
things to do downtown. Having a plan and insisting that the Galaxy
stadium-style movie theatre be downtown rather than a suburban
big box development has lent a lot to why downtown Saskatoon is
successful in the evening. That’s just one of the things we have.
Persephone Theatre is another. That all comes from a plan that
insisted that downtown be the cultural hub of the city of Saskatoon.”
Saskatoon’s downtown has welcomed the recent addition of
such notable eateries as State & Main, Woods Alehouse, Cafe Noir
Espresso Bar, Woodfire Grill , Afghan Kabob and Donair, Mardis
Gras Grill, Istanbul Diner, Mediterrano, The Hub at Holiday Inn, The
Sugar Moon Cakery, La Prep and Hudsons Canadian Tap House - to
name but a few.
What new taste delights can Saskatonians look forward to
downtown?
While Scadden can’t reveal the names of new restaurants that are
seeking space in downtown, there is one up and coming establishment
“We have the kind of vibrancy
things to do downtown.”
Terry Scadden,
executive director of The Partnership
he can disclose. “Congress Beer House will be opening at 215
Second Avenue South, across from O’Shea’s Irish Pub. Basically
right next door to it, there will be another New Orleans-style
restaurant opening up,” says Scadden.
A Google search of Congress Beer House reveals the downtown
establishment will offer a menu showcasing local ingredients as well
as having over 30 local beers on tap.
“I’ve had confidential conversations with several people who
are looking for restaurant/lounge opportunities in the downtown. I
know that there are lots of people who are certainly looking to open
restaurants in downtown Saskatoon. Space is at a premium; there’s
no doubt about it. Without somebody building some new space, I
don’t know that there’s any restaurant space that would be coming up
available. There’s very little retail space as well. We only have a 1.5
per cent vacancy rate for retail space in downtown.”
