front cover of this edition of Hot Times. The painting, on display<br />
at the Darrell Bell Gallery, depicts the Taste of saskatchewan<br />
Festival in saskatoon.<br />
Inger DeCoursey was born in Camrose, Alberta and received her<br />
Bachelor of Education at the University of Alberta in 1956. After<br />
teaching for several years she decided to return to school to study<br />
art. After her studies, Inger stayed<br />
in Saskatoon, and steadily gained<br />
a reputation for her paintings that<br />
depict life in the city. She finds<br />
inspiration in a range of things,<br />
from everyday scenes to the many<br />
festivals that take place throughout<br />
the year. Her work is vibrant and<br />
energetic, beautifully capturing the<br />
moments and spaces that make<br />
each event unique.<br />
Inger continues to live and paint in<br />
Saskatoon. Her work is represented<br />
in the collections of the<br />
Government of Saskatchewan, City<br />
of Saskatoon, Saskatoon Board of<br />
Education and the Saskatoon Club.<br />

ACTION ZONE<br />
Join the thousands of cheering fans in Saskatoon when the 2013<br />
MasterCard Memorial Cup takes to the ice at Credit Union Centre from<br />
May 17 to 26. The quest for the cup brings together finalists from the<br />
Western Hockey, Ontario Hockey and Quebec Major Junior Hockey<br />
Leagues, along with hometown favourites - the Saskatoon Blades.<br />
“This is one of the biggest hockey events in Canada and is sure to<br />
provide fantastic sporting action for Saskatchewan residents as well as<br />
visitors from out of province. As the local hosts, we’re very pleased to<br />
have our local team, the Saskatoon Blades, competing for the national<br />
championship,” says Demoskoff.<br />

short walk from the arena. FanFest offers great food, live music and entertainment, as well<br />
as interactive games and displays for the kids.<br />
Saskatoon is a new stop on the five-city Subaru Western Triathlon Series, with a race<br />
date set for June 30. “It’s the first time this event has been hosted in Saskatoon and is sure<br />
to draw a lot of interest from across the western provinces,” says Demoskoff.<br />
Athletes will swim at Pike Lake Provincial Park, bike into Saskatoon, and then run<br />
along the Meewasin Valley Trail to the finish line. A total of 500 elite and recreational<br />
athletes are expected to participate in the race, which will serve as the Saskatchewan<br />
championship and a qualifying event for the national team.<br />
July 4 to 7, top professional golfers from across North America will arrive in<br />
Saskatoon for the Dakota Dunes Casino Open, now one of eight stops on the brand new<br />
PGA Tour Canada. “We’re very pleased to have the PGA Tour Canada Dakota Dunes<br />
Open here. This is the launch of the PGA Tour Canada and will turn the spotlight on<br />
the Dakota Dunes Golf Links, recognized as one of the top courses in Canada,” says<br />
Demoskoff.<br />
The golf tourney is one of four major events taking place in Saskatoon that weekend!<br />
Also turning up the fun that weekend will be the Canada Remembers Our Heroes Air<br />
Show and Saskatoon Pets in the Park.<br />
Festival fun extends all summer long in Saskatoon, including the PotashCorp<br />
Children’s Festival (June 2 - 5), the SaskTel Saskatchewan Jazz Festival (June 21 - July<br />
1), the Shakespeare on the Saskatchewan Festival (July 10 - August 25), the PotashCorp<br />
Fringe Theatre Festival (August 1 - 10), the Saskatoon Ex (August 6 - 11), Folkfest<br />
(August 15 - 17) and the PotashCorp Fireworks Festival (August 30-31) - just to name a<br />
few!<br />
ARTISTIC FLAIR<br />
Saskatoon boasts a vibrant arts and culture scene, ranging from acclaimed galleries to<br />
lively music venues.<br />
The visual arts have never had a higher profile in our city. Anticipation is growing<br />
as construction is set to begin on the Remai Art Gallery of Saskatchewan. The gallery,<br />
located at River Landing, will be the largest in the province. Its permanent collection<br />
already includes the world’s finest collection of linocuts by Picasso. The collection of 405<br />
prints has an estimated value of $20 million and was donated to the gallery by the Frank<br />
and Ellen Remai Foundation.<br />
The Affinity Gallery, located on the main floor of the Saskatchewan Craft Council on<br />
Broadway Avenue, is the province’s only public exhibition gallery dedicated solely to the<br />
celebration of fine craft. The gallery showcases artists working in a wide variety of media<br />
including fibre, clay, metal, wood and glass.<br />

The Mix Artists’ Collective Gallery is housed in a charming<br />
character house in downtown Saskatoon, at 539 24th Street East, just<br />
behind Knox United Church. The gallery features works by local artists<br />
and, as a collective, makes connections with writers, musicians, actors<br />
and other members of the arts community.<br />
Other outstanding Saskatoon galleries include the nationally<br />
acclaimed Mendel Art Gallery and Civic Conservatory, Handmade<br />
House, Glenn Scrimshaw Gallery, Collectors’ Choice Art Gallery, Clay<br />
Studio Three Pottery Studio and the Darrell Bell Gallery.<br />
FAMILY FUN<br />
This year, one of Saskatoon’s favourite family attractions - the<br />
Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo - marks a special anniversary.<br />
The Forestry Farm got its start 100 years ago as the Sutherland Forest<br />
Nursery Station, and over the years, distributed 147 million trees to<br />
prairie farmers. Centennial celebrations will take place Sunday, May 26,<br />
offering a full afternoon of old-fashioned fun including entertainment,<br />
wagon rides, games and historical demonstrations.<br />
“The Saskatoon Forestry Farm Park and Zoo is definitely one of<br />
the city’s key family attractions. It’s the only CAZA-accredited zoo in<br />
Saskatchewan,” says Demoskoff. “We consider ourselves very fortunate<br />
to have such a great facility in Saskatoon that attracts families from<br />
across the province.”<br />
A new family attraction in Saskatoon is The Prairie Lily, the doubledecked<br />
river boat launched last June by Shearwater River Cruises. The<br />
Prairie Lily can accommodate 119 passengers, rain or shine, on the<br />
canopied upper deck and enclosed climate-controlled lower quarters. The<br />
Prairie Lily offers one-hour sightseeing cruises twice a day, along with<br />
delicious dinner cruises on Friday and Saturday evenings, and a Sunday<br />
brunch cruise. “The Prairie Lily showcases the city in such a unique way.<br />
A visit to Saskatoon is not complete without a tour aboard The Prairie<br />
Lily,” says Demoskoff.<br />

Now entering its third exciting year, the River Lights Festival continues to grow as a Saskatchewan water-based tourist<br />

For the first show of its summer season, The Barn Playhouse<br />
presents a zany romantic comedy set in a small town radio<br />
station, KOLD Radio: Whitefish Bay, June 12 to 16 and June 19 to<br />

“KOLD Radio” broadcasts from the corner of a tiny café in<br />
Whitefish Bay where fishing is a way of life. Sparks fly when Lars’<br />
talk show about ice fishing loses all its sponsors to Martha’s talk<br />
show about books. To make matters worse, the “fish-out-ofwater”<br />
new owner from New York City fires Lars and promotes<br />
Martha to Station Manager! It’s the beginning of a zany battle<br />
with Lars fighting for his job, his dignity and Martha‘s affections!<br />
“This comedy is totally silly, entertaining and refreshingly<br />
unique! It really reels in the laughs!”<br />
The Barn Playhouse’s second summer show is an hilarious<br />
musical comedy, Chaps, running August 21 to 25 and August 28<br />
to September 1.<br />
This one is a rollicking good time, an old-fashioned variety<br />
show with a twist! The year is 1944, and America’s favorite<br />
singing cowboy Tex Riley and his troupe are late for a special<br />
broadcast at the BBC in London. Out of sheer desperation, the<br />
tour manager and the young producer grab whomever they can,<br />
slap them into costume, hand them scripts and shove them in<br />
front of the studio audience. The resulting performance is one<br />
you will never forget! This hilarious romp brings new meaning to<br />
“The Show Must Go On!”<br />
The Barn Playhouse opens Wednesday through Saturday<br />
evenings at 5:30 p.m. with food booths, live music, horse-drawn<br />
wagon rides and the Craft Barn. Show time is at 7:30 p.m. On<br />
Sundays, the yard opens at 12 noon with the food booths and<br />

of Avro Canada.” Today, the names Avro and Arrow<br />
have become virtually synonymous with each other.<br />
This exhibit encourages visitors to explore the debate<br />
and conflicting points of view over the cancellation of<br />
the arrow, and to focus on the lesser known history of<br />
Avro Canada.<br />
Alongside the replica rooms and permanent<br />
exhibit highlighting the Rt. Hon. John G. Diefenbaker’s<br />
legacy, visitors can explore a vibrant cultural institution<br />
celebrating citizenship, leadership, human rights and<br />
Canada’s role in the international community. The<br />
gallery is open Monday to Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to<br />

MEEwaSIN VallEy INTERpRETIVE CENTRE<br />
The Meewasin Valley Interpretive Centre, located along the scenic South Saskatchewan River, at the base of the Traffic Bridge,<br />
is an excellent starting point for your exploration of Saskatoon. The Centre focuses on human settlement in Saskatoon and the<br />
natural history of the South Saskatchewan River Valley.<br />
The Centre offers visitors interactive exhibits, self-guided tours and information about sites throughout the city. It features<br />
tours for groups on the Meewasin Trail, children’s programs throughout the summer and Sunday programs with a heritage focus.<br />

THE MaRR<br />
RESIdENCE<br />
Over 100 years ago, during May, June and the<br />
early part of July of 1885, this simple, two-storey<br />
frame house earned a special place in the history<br />
of Saskatoon and the history of Canada’s great<br />
Northwest. It was here at the Marr Residence<br />
that many wounded soldiers of the Northwest<br />
Resistance were treated.<br />
The Marr Residence is the oldest house in<br />
Saskatoon still on its original site. Beginning on<br />
July 1, this historic home will be open for tours<br />
and programs every Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4:30<br />
p.m., and Saturday, Sunday and Monday of each<br />
long weekend from 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. This is<br />
your chance to explore a part of Saskatoon’s<br />
fascinating history.<br />

Visitors and city residents alike are delighting in a new way to see<br />
Saskatoon - aboard The Prairie Lily - the new flagship launched by<br />
Shearwater River Cruises.<br />
The double-decked classic river boat was launched early last<br />
summer, replacing two smaller boats in the Shearwater fleet. “The<br />
Prairie Lily takes up to 119 people - over three times the capacity of<br />
any of our other boats,” said Peter Kingsmill, president of Shearwater<br />
River Cruises.<br />
The boat was built in Wisconsin in 1989 and transported to<br />
Laughlin, Nevada, where it journeyed up and down the Colorado<br />
River. Shearwater’s business partners - Peter and Valerie Kingsmill<br />
and Michael and Joan Steckhan - purchased the boat last March, had it<br />
transported to Saskatoon and re-christened it The Prairie Lily.<br />
Guests can cruise in comfort aboard The Prairie Lily, which<br />
features a canopy-covered bridge deck and two climate-controlled<br />
lounges on the saloon deck. “It’s a much better experience for anyone<br />
who comes on board because she’s so spacious. There are two full<br />
washrooms, a bar, and a galley for food preparation and service,” said<br />
Kingsmill.<br />
“The cabin space is flexible. You can seat 80 people for dinner<br />
down on the main deck, or seat two groups of 20 or 30.” As a result,<br />
The Prairie Lily is gaining popularity as a venue for corporate lunches,<br />
meetings, workshops, weddings and anniversaries.<br />
With its new season scheduled to begin May 18, The Prairie Lily<br />
will offer one-hour sightseeing cruises twice a day, at 4 p.m. and 6:30<br />
p.m. as well as a 2 p.m. matinee cruise on Saturdays and Sundays.<br />
On Friday and Saturday evenings, The Prairie Lily offers dinner<br />
cruises, featuring delectable three-course meals that vary from prime rib<br />
to chicken oscar.<br />
“Every Sunday, we offer a Sunday brunch cruise that leaves the<br />
dock at noon and returns at 1 p.m. It’s a hot buffet brunch, with items<br />
like freshly made omelettes and waffles. It’s really popular,” said<br />
Kingsmill.<br />
Whether you opt for a one-hour sightseeing excursion or a<br />
leisurely dinner cruise, you’re sure to be entertained and informed. The<br />
Prairie Lily travels under four of Saskatoon’s eight bridges, alongside<br />
manicured riverbank parks and past some of the city’s most opulent<br />
residences and fascinating architectural icons. Carefully researched<br />
commentary about the river, its history, local landmarks and cultural<br />
highlights both inform and entertain passengers.<br />
“We really focus on the river itself. This year, for example, we are<br />
displaying a gallery of historic photographs of steamships that used to<br />

travel this river. You’d be surprised how many steamships there were<br />
on this river back in the late 1800s. We talk about the sinking of the<br />
steamship The Medicine Hat, the landing of the Northcote from the<br />
1885 Rebellion. People learn about the bridges, their design and when<br />
they were built,” said Kingsmill.<br />
“The commentary runs at a comfortable, non-pressured pace<br />
throughout the cruise. We use a GPS-triggered commentary so they’re<br />
getting the right information at the right site. The skipper may choose<br />
to embellish that commentary with some daily specific information.”<br />
The commentary is broadcast only on the upper deck. Passengers<br />
who want to simply sit back and enjoy the scenery can do so in the<br />
tranquility of the lower deck.<br />
Last summer, The Prairie Lily welcomed 16,032 passengers,<br />
including city residents, visitors from across the prairies and from as far<br />
away as Saudi Arabia, Britain, the Ukraine and the United States.<br />
“We were absolutely delighted with the reception that we received.<br />
We think the city is ready for something like this,” said Kingsmill.<br />

With buzzworthy restaurants on almost every block, Saskatoon’s<br />
downtown has become a favoured destination for discerning diners.<br />
“It’s probably the most eclectic range of dining experiences that<br />
you could possibly want to have - from Asian fusion to American/<br />
Canadian, to Afghan and East Indian. Just about any kind of food you<br />
possibly want to have, you can enjoy in downtown Saskatoon,” says<br />
Terry Scadden, executive director of The Partnership, Saskatoon’s<br />
Downtown Business Improvement District.<br />
Scadden says restaurateurs are attracted to the downtown core<br />
because it’s where the largest number of workers in the city are<br />
concentrated. “Between 22,000 and 24,000 people work downtown.<br />
That’s a pretty good group of people to serve at lunch and after work.”<br />
Saskatoon’s downtown is unique in offering an exciting mix of<br />
both independent, locally-owned eateries as well as restaurants that<br />
are part of national chains. “Downtown has proven to be an area<br />
where individuals who are entrepreneurial and want to run their own<br />

restaurants have an opportunity to do so. Even inside our hotels for<br />
the most part, the restaurants are not franchise restaurants,” says<br />
Scadden.<br />
Having such a large cluster of popular dining spots keeps traffic<br />
flowing into downtown, day and night. “If you want to have a vibrant<br />
downtown, it has to be vibrant for more than the work day. There are<br />
lots of downtowns in North America that are busy and vibrant from<br />
8 to 6, then they die after that. Saskatoon is not like that. It can be as<br />
difficult to get a parking space in downtown Saskatoon after 6:00 p.m.<br />
as it was to get in the afternoon,” says Scadden.<br />
“We have the kind of vibrancy downtown in the evening that big<br />
cities like Vancouver and Montreal have. That’s because there are<br />
things to do downtown. Having a plan and insisting that the Galaxy<br />
stadium-style movie theatre be downtown rather than a suburban<br />
big box development has lent a lot to why downtown Saskatoon is<br />
successful in the evening. That’s just one of the things we have.<br />
Persephone Theatre is another. That all comes from a plan that<br />
insisted that downtown be the cultural hub of the city of Saskatoon.”<br />
Saskatoon’s downtown has welcomed the recent addition of<br />
such notable eateries as State & Main, Woods Alehouse, Cafe Noir<br />
Espresso Bar, Woodfire Grill , Afghan Kabob and Donair, Mardis<br />
Gras Grill, Istanbul Diner, Mediterrano, The Hub at Holiday Inn, The<br />
Sugar Moon Cakery, La Prep and Hudsons Canadian Tap House - to<br />
name but a few.<br />
What new taste delights can Saskatonians look forward to<br />
downtown?<br />
While Scadden can’t reveal the names of new restaurants that are<br />
seeking space in downtown, there is one up and coming establishment<br />

he can disclose. “Congress Beer House will be opening at 215<br />
Second Avenue South, across from O’Shea’s Irish Pub. Basically<br />
right next door to it, there will be another New Orleans-style<br />
restaurant opening up,” says Scadden.<br />
A Google search of Congress Beer House reveals the downtown<br />
establishment will offer a menu showcasing local ingredients as well<br />
as having over 30 local beers on tap.<br />
“I’ve had confidential conversations with several people who<br />
are looking for restaurant/lounge opportunities in the downtown. I<br />
know that there are lots of people who are certainly looking to open<br />
restaurants in downtown Saskatoon. Space is at a premium; there’s<br />
no doubt about it. Without somebody building some new space, I<br />
don’t know that there’s any restaurant space that would be coming up<br />
available. There’s very little retail space as well. We only have a 1.5<br />
per cent vacancy rate for retail space in downtown.”<br />
