Abstract: The genera Hydrochus Leach and Rishihydroius Makhan in Turkey (Coleoptera, Hydrochidae) are<br />

outlined and keys provided for all described species as well as a key to known larvae (genera).<br />

Key words: Hydrochus, Rishihydroius, Hydrochidae, Coleoptera, Turkey.<br />

Introduction<br />

An annotated checklist and a key to the Turkish elongated water scavenger beetles<br />

(Coleoptera: Hydrochidae) was published by Darılmaz & Kıyak (2008). In that paper they<br />

placed species of Hydrochidae described previously by Dr Dewanand Makhan into<br />

synonymy. It should be noted that the fierce competitor, the neo-nazi Manfred Jäch from the<br />

Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, Wien, Austria is one of the editors (read “controllers”) of<br />

the Baltic Journal of Coleopterology.<br />

Makhan (2002, 2004) was forced to publish “Hydrochidae of the world, Dryopidae and<br />

Hydrophilidae (Coleoptera)” for the second time because the European specialists failed to<br />

accept the new species published in a private publication. In the present paper and future<br />

papers we want to show that the Makhan genera are valid and that Makhan is not the “rogue<br />

taxonomist” that many of the international scientific Gestapo have incorrectly and illegally<br />

portrayed.<br />

We wonder why European waterbeetle specialists with their very powerful and expensive<br />

microscopes don’t know how to properly use these microscopes. They have failed to observe<br />

the clear and obvious differences between two species and two genera of Hydrochidae. In<br />

addition, it should be pointed out, that the waterbeetle specialists from Europe have until<br />

now, still been unable to discern the eggs, larvae, pupae and the antennae from various genera<br />

of the Hydrochidae. They do not even know how to rear larvae from the adults! Can they<br />

show us a Hydrochus larva? This answer is no! Are they scientists or stooges! We believe<br />

they are stooges!<br />

“Dr” Manfred Jäch from the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, Wien, Austria and “Dr”<br />

Michael Hansen from the Zoologischen Museum der Universität Kopenhagen, Denmark (the<br />

latter now deceased due to an obesity problem) enjoyed placing the Makhan genera into<br />

synonyms without any critical review. Manfred Jäch has shown himself to be a pompous,<br />

arrogant, ignorant and highly jealous individual who is greatly frustrated about getting funds<br />

for his own research and lives solely from tax-payer funded money (he cannot make money<br />

by any other means because he is unemployable for mainstream labouring work like most<br />

academics, and unsuitable for jobs where one has to follow orders).<br />

Jäch, M.A. (1995): Hydrochidae (Coleoptera), pp. 181–183. – In Jäch, M.A. & Ji, L. (eds.):<br />

Water Beetles of China, Vol. I. – Wien: Zoologisch-Botanische Gesellschaft in Österreich and<br />

Wiener Coleopterologenverein, 410 pp. Note that this is a Makhan paper!. Manfred Jäch<br />

deleted the Makhan name in anger because Makhan published Soesilius rishi (Makhan, 1995)<br />

the Chinese, Malaysian & Thailand species in Phegea, an Belgian entomological magazine not<br />

under the control of the evil Jäch. Jäch did not recognize Soesilius rishi (Makhan, 1995) in the<br />

book Water Beetles of China because the Makhan name highly stressed Manfred Jäch because<br />

he knew secretly that Makhan was correct in his taxonomy. Without Soesilius rishi (Makhan,<br />

1995), which is a distinctive species, the Water Beetles of China book is incomplete. It<br />

should also be mentioned that many Iranian waterbeetle specimens which were sent by<br />

Iranian entomologists to the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, Austria for identification were<br />

never returned back to Iran. Manfred Jäch is the Curator of the Coleoptera Collection<br />

(waterbeetles) and obviously retained the specimens. No further material will ever be sent to<br />

this person. Jach’s neonazi behaviour makes him a world laughing stock and is so typical of<br />

the country he resides in.<br />

In this paper the differences between the larvae and adults of two genera in larvae and adults<br />

in Hydrochidae are highlighted.<br />

Hydrochidae from Turkey<br />

Hydrochidae is a family with two genera in Turkey. Hydrochus Leach, 1817 with 4 species<br />

and Rishihydroius Makhan, 2001 with two species.<br />

The genus Rishihydroius Makhan, 2000<br />

Larval head is rounded (Fig. 4, see arrow); larval mandibles are curved, with two teeth, apex<br />

of upper tooth is complete (Fig 6, see arrow); lower tooth is short, not so wide (Fig. 6, see<br />

arrow), surface is not papillate and setae are absent. The clypeus is horn-shaped (Fig. 4, see<br />

arrow).<br />

Rishihydroius megaphallus group<br />

Elongately oval species. Antenna with 6 segments and with a two-segmented club. Male<br />

aedeagus with very large basal piece and with short parameres. There is only one species in<br />

Turkey.<br />

parameres.<br />

Rishihydroius brevis group<br />

Elongately oval species. Antenna with 7 segments and with a three-segmented club. Male<br />

aedeagus with very large basalpiece and short parameres. There is only one species in Turkey.<br />

2. Rishihydroius brevis (Herbst, 1793)<br />

Antenna with 7 segments and with three-segmented club. Male aedeagus with very large<br />

basal-piece and short parameres.<br />

The genus Hydrochus Leach, 1817<br />

Elongated species. Antenna 7 segments with a 3-segmented club. Parameres with short basal<br />

piece. Larval head is elongated (Fig. 3, arrow). Larval mandibles curved, with two teeth, apex<br />

of upper tooth is large, incomplete; lower tooth is short and wide, surface is papillate (Fig. 5,<br />

see arrow), lower tooth with three setae (Fig. 5, see arrow). There are 4 species of Hydrochus<br />

in Turkey.<br />

Synonyms: Hydrochus cicindeloides Marsham, 1802; Hydrochus crenulatus Motschulsky,<br />

1860; Hydrochus elongatus Fabricius, 1792; Hydrochus sibiricus Motschulsky, 1860.<br />

2. Hydrochus flavipennis Küster, 1852.<br />

Synonms: Hydrochus filiformis Kuwert, 1887; Hydrochus foveostriatus Fairmaire, 1859;<br />

Hydrochus fuscipennis Kuwert, 1887; Hydrochus obtusicollis Fairmaire, 1877; Hydrochus<br />

testaceipennisKuwert, 1887.<br />

3. Hydrochus ibericus Valladares, Diaz & Delgado, 1999.<br />
