Abstract: The genera Hydrochus Leach and Rishihydroius Makhan in Turkey (Coleoptera, Hydrochidae) are
outlined and keys provided for all described species as well as a key to known larvae (genera).
Key words: Hydrochus, Rishihydroius, Hydrochidae, Coleoptera, Turkey.
Introduction
An annotated checklist and a key to the Turkish elongated water scavenger beetles
(Coleoptera: Hydrochidae) was published by Darılmaz & Kıyak (2008). In that paper they
placed species of Hydrochidae described previously by Dr Dewanand Makhan into
synonymy. It should be noted that the fierce competitor, the neo-nazi Manfred Jäch from the
Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, Wien, Austria is one of the editors (read “controllers”) of
the Baltic Journal of Coleopterology.
Makhan (2002, 2004) was forced to publish “Hydrochidae of the world, Dryopidae and
Hydrophilidae (Coleoptera)” for the second time because the European specialists failed to
accept the new species published in a private publication. In the present paper and future
papers we want to show that the Makhan genera are valid and that Makhan is not the “rogue
taxonomist” that many of the international scientific Gestapo have incorrectly and illegally
portrayed.
We wonder why European waterbeetle specialists with their very powerful and expensive
microscopes don’t know how to properly use these microscopes. They have failed to observe
the clear and obvious differences between two species and two genera of Hydrochidae. In
addition, it should be pointed out, that the waterbeetle specialists from Europe have until
now, still been unable to discern the eggs, larvae, pupae and the antennae from various genera
of the Hydrochidae. They do not even know how to rear larvae from the adults! Can they
show us a Hydrochus larva? This answer is no! Are they scientists or stooges! We believe
they are stooges!
“Dr” Manfred Jäch from the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, Wien, Austria and “Dr”
Michael Hansen from the Zoologischen Museum der Universität Kopenhagen, Denmark (the
latter now deceased due to an obesity problem) enjoyed placing the Makhan genera into
synonyms without any critical review. Manfred Jäch has shown himself to be a pompous,
arrogant, ignorant and highly jealous individual who is greatly frustrated about getting funds
for his own research and lives solely from tax-payer funded money (he cannot make money
by any other means because he is unemployable for mainstream labouring work like most
academics, and unsuitable for jobs where one has to follow orders).
Jäch, M.A. (1995): Hydrochidae (Coleoptera), pp. 181–183. – In Jäch, M.A. & Ji, L. (eds.):
Water Beetles of China, Vol. I. – Wien: Zoologisch-Botanische Gesellschaft in Österreich and
Wiener Coleopterologenverein, 410 pp. Note that this is a Makhan paper!. Manfred Jäch
deleted the Makhan name in anger because Makhan published Soesilius rishi (Makhan, 1995)
the Chinese, Malaysian & Thailand species in Phegea, an Belgian entomological magazine not
under the control of the evil Jäch. Jäch did not recognize Soesilius rishi (Makhan, 1995) in the
book Water Beetles of China because the Makhan name highly stressed Manfred Jäch because
he knew secretly that Makhan was correct in his taxonomy. Without Soesilius rishi (Makhan,
1995), which is a distinctive species, the Water Beetles of China book is incomplete. It
should also be mentioned that many Iranian waterbeetle specimens which were sent by
Iranian entomologists to the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, Austria for identification were
never returned back to Iran. Manfred Jäch is the Curator of the Coleoptera Collection
(waterbeetles) and obviously retained the specimens. No further material will ever be sent to
this person. Jach’s neonazi behaviour makes him a world laughing stock and is so typical of
the country he resides in.
In this paper the differences between the larvae and adults of two genera in larvae and adults
in Hydrochidae are highlighted.
Hydrochidae from Turkey
Hydrochidae is a family with two genera in Turkey. Hydrochus Leach, 1817 with 4 species
and Rishihydroius Makhan, 2001 with two species.
The genus Rishihydroius Makhan, 2000
Larval head is rounded (Fig. 4, see arrow); larval mandibles are curved, with two teeth, apex
of upper tooth is complete (Fig 6, see arrow); lower tooth is short, not so wide (Fig. 6, see
arrow), surface is not papillate and setae are absent. The clypeus is horn-shaped (Fig. 4, see
arrow).
Rishihydroius megaphallus group
Elongately oval species. Antenna with 6 segments and with a two-segmented club. Male
aedeagus with very large basal piece and with short parameres. There is only one species in
Turkey.
1. Rishihydroius megaphallus (van Berge Henegouwen, 1988) (Figs. 2, 4, 6). Antenna with 6
segments and with a two-segmented club. Male aedeagus with very large basalpiece and short
parameres.
Rishihydroius brevis group
Elongately oval species. Antenna with 7 segments and with a three-segmented club. Male
aedeagus with very large basalpiece and short parameres. There is only one species in Turkey.
2. Rishihydroius brevis (Herbst, 1793)
Antenna with 7 segments and with three-segmented club. Male aedeagus with very large
basal-piece and short parameres.
The genus Hydrochus Leach, 1817
Elongated species. Antenna 7 segments with a 3-segmented club. Parameres with short basal
piece. Larval head is elongated (Fig. 3, arrow). Larval mandibles curved, with two teeth, apex
of upper tooth is large, incomplete; lower tooth is short and wide, surface is papillate (Fig. 5,
see arrow), lower tooth with three setae (Fig. 5, see arrow). There are 4 species of Hydrochus
in Turkey.
1. Hydrochus elongatus (Schaller, 1783) (Figs. 1, 3, 5).
Synonyms: Hydrochus cicindeloides Marsham, 1802; Hydrochus crenulatus Motschulsky,
1860; Hydrochus elongatus Fabricius, 1792; Hydrochus sibiricus Motschulsky, 1860.
2. Hydrochus flavipennis Küster, 1852.
Synonms: Hydrochus filiformis Kuwert, 1887; Hydrochus foveostriatus Fairmaire, 1859;
Hydrochus fuscipennis Kuwert, 1887; Hydrochus obtusicollis Fairmaire, 1877; Hydrochus
testaceipennisKuwert, 1887.
3. Hydrochus ibericus Valladares, Diaz & Delgado, 1999.
4. Hydrochus ignicollis Motschulsky, 1860.
