Dear children making First Communion,
Today you take a very big
step in becoming a grown up
Catholic; you are making your
First Communion. You have watched
your parents and rela ves go to Communion and, most
likely, you have even walked up the aisle with them as
they went to Communion. I have seen the wonder in
your eyes when you were li ler and trying to fi gure out
what was happening, and I have seen your sadness, as
you got older, that you couldn’t go. Over this last year,
as you studied to make your First Communion, I have
seen your true desire to make your First Eucharist. This
weekend you will get to join us at the Table of the Lord
in the Breaking of the Bread and the Sharing in the Cup.
Congratula ons!
I hope that you will go to Communion o en and
know that you and Jesus are united to make your life just
like Jesus’. I hope you take some me a er you receive
Communion each me to thank God for Jesus and all the
good things that God gives you every day. Remember
that you can ask Jesus for help any me, and that you can
talk to Jesus in your own words every day of your life.
May God always bless each of you as you receive

NEW SOUND SYSTEM FOR SCHOOL GYM
Our contractor has generously allowed us to use his
scaff olding to install a new sound system for the gym,
which is saving us many thousands of dollars and
making a new system aff ordable for our parish school.

NEW WORDS…
DEEPER MEANING…
SAME MASS!
Soon we will experience new words to familiar prayers
at Mass. A new English transla on of the Roman Missal
will replace the one we currently use for Mass. The
Roman Missal is the collec on of prayers, chants, Scripture
readings and instruc ons (rubrics) that are used during Mass,
and is wri en in La n, the offi cial language of the Church.
This new English transla on of the Roman Missal is taken
from the new La n transla on that came out in 2000.
The changes in the Roman Missal will take eff ect on
the First Sunday of Advent, November 26-27, 2011. The
commi ee appointed by Fr. Anthony to prepare our
community to welcome the new Roman Missal created
this Vision Statement:
We at St. Francis take seriously the charge from Va -
can II of full, ac ve and conscious par cipa on in the
liturgy. We recognize that liturgy forms us and that
vibrant liturgy enables us to be er serve our God
and our neighbor. We embrace this change in the
Mass as an opportunity for renewal and revitaliza-
on in our worship.
All parishioners are invited to our fi rst set of Parish
Workshops where we will learn about, refl ect on,
discuss, and celebrate our worship here at St. Francis.

St. Francis Elementary School is looking for one parishioner
(without children currently in our school) to join
our Catholic School Advisory Commission for a twoyear
term beginning in August 2011. This group meets on
the second Thursday each month at 5:30pm with Fr. Anthony
and principal Laurie Power, and advises on many aspects

Is it me for you to “Step” up? Our Step
Ministry needs your help. Every day, 365
days a year, we provide a safe, peaceful,
and private place to sleep in the Parish Center
courtyard for 16 homeless folks from our neighborhood.
The service commitment is one day a week from
6:00-7:30pm. Members of our Step Ministry welcome guests at
the gate as they arrive and provide a guiding presence as they
set up their cots on the pa o for the night.There is plenty of

HATS OFF TO ST. FRANCIS ELEMENTARY!
Sacramento Food Bank and Family Services
once again thanks St. Francis Elementary
for their generous dona on to our Mother
Baby Program. The school collected 977 items
of toiletries and diapers to help assist our clients.

EWASTE DRIVE A SUCCESS
This year’s Lenten Eco-Fast program ended
in a successful E-Waste drive that ne ed
the St. Francis School Retrofi t project
$419. Parishioners also fi lled two vans of donated
goods for the St. Vincent de Paul Society. A special thank you
to all who donated items and the volunteers from our school
Parents’ Club and our Adult Faith Forma on Commi ee.
8TH GRADERS SERVE STEP GUESTS
On Wednesday evening, the 8th grade class from St.
Francis Elementary School prepared and served
our Step guests a magnifi cent dinner: lasagna with
homemade sauce, rolls with homemade garlic bu er, salad,
veggies, lemonade and homemade ice cream sandwiches!
For their school fundraising event, the kids chose to do
a service project toward which people could donate funds.
They decided their project would be to cook, from scratch, a
complete meal for the guests. They raised $500 ($250 will go to
the school and $250 will go to the Step Ministry). Fr. Anthony
popped in to accept the check personally and to thank them.
The guests were touched that the kids would go to such
lengths for them, and the kids were excited and happy to be
able to serve in this way. It was an excellent experience for all.
