The National Tax Practice Institute (NTPI)
The IRS has stepped up its focus on enforcement—now is the time for you to
step up to NTPI, a course of study developed by NAEA to teach enrolled agents,
CPAs, and tax attorneys how to represent their clients before IRS. Just three days
at NTPI will increase your confidence and expertise at representation, providing
you with the tools necessary to grow your business, increase your revenue,
and better serve your clients.
Road to NTPI Fellowship
By attending NTPI, you’ll gain knowledge that
will give you the professional edge with current
and potential clients as the rolls of taxpayers in
trouble grow. NTPI is a multi-level program—
with each level of this program, participants
expand their knowledge and skills, and gain the
confidence needed to successfully guide their
clients through the often challenging maze of IRS
codes, internal regulations, and agency structure.
Those who successfully complete Levels 1, 2
and 3 (in order) earn the distinction of NTPI
Fellow, a credential held with pride by many
of the nation’s top tax practitioners. The NAEA
website showcases the credential in the “Find an
EA” directory, which allows prospective clients to
search specifically for a Fellow.
NTPI Level 1
If you want to expand your tax practice to the
well-paying and highly rewarding representation
field, you’re going to go head-to-head with
IRS—and that takes confidence. Confidence
comes from knowing what to do, beginning
with the first communication with IRS. Level 1
covers the many components of representation,
ranging all the way from tax research to criminal
investigations. You’ll learn representation skills
you can immediately put to use in your practice.
No prerequisite required. Available courses
include:
• Overview of Representation
• Non-Filers
• Introduction to Examination
• Communicating with the IRS
• Engagement Letters
• Introduction to Appeals
• Tax Research & Resources
• Introduction to Collections
• Representation Ethics (2 CE Regulatory Ethics)
• Introduction to Criminal Investigations
EA; Bert Hartmann, EA; Claudia A Hill, EA; Robert E.
McKenzie, EA, JD; David Miles, EA; Steven E. Potts,
EA, JD, USTCP; Sherrill Trovato, EA, USTCP
“I thoroughly enjoyed all of the instructors! I am very
glad I attended this conference. It helped me further my
representation knowledge and I am looking forward to
attending the next 3 levels.”

NTPI Level 2
Case studies and active discussion bring
representation to life! The high-energy workshop
atmosphere of this level makes it many attendees’
favorite. Explore collections from a wide variety
of angles including collections appeals, Form 433,
case resolutions, and liens & levies. Complex
issues such as innocent spouse and trust fund
recovery are easier to understand and master in
this energetic, interactive environment. Many
participants have reported that the unique case
study approach to instruction in Level 2 increases
learning and speed retention. Level 1 must be
completed in entirety prior to registration for
Level 2. The following subject areas will be
covered in Level 2:
• Form 1040 Audits
• Exam Appeals
• Non-Filers & SFRs
NTPI Level 3
Level 3 completes your foundation in
representation. You’ll jump right into a high-level
study of topics such as authority to investigate
and trust fund recovery. Observe two mock
conferences where EAs attempt to negotiate
settlements and resolutions with actual IRS
Appeals Officers. The information you’ll take
away from Level 3 will guide your actions over
and over again when you’re serving as a taxpayer’s
advocate. This advanced program is designed for
graduates of Level 1 and Level 2. Available courses
include:
• Outer Limits
