Dear Friends,
Soon to be Beatified Pope John Paul II wrote
in his Lenten message of 1996 the following:
Once again the Lord is calling us to follow
him along the journey of Lent. Each year all
the faithful are invited to respond anew as
individuals and as a community to our baptismal vocation
and to bear fruits of conversion. Lent is a journey of evolving,
creative reflection which inspires penance and gives new
impetus to every aspect of our commitment to follow the Gospel.
It is a journey of love which opens the hearts of believers
to our brothers and sisters and draws them to God. Jesus
asks his disciples to live and to radiate charity; this new
commandment of love represents the authoritative summation
of the Decalogue entrusted by God to Moses on Mount
Sinai. Each day we encounter people who are hungry, thirsty
or sick, people who are outcasts or migrants. During this
season of Lent we are invited to pay greater heed to the suffering
written on their faces, faces which challenge us to
acknowledge the various aspects of poverty that continue in
our time. (Pope John Paul II Lenten Message, 1996 Paragraph
1)
Lent is the time of year for conversion; we are called to build
upon the three pillars of the Lenten season: Prayer, Charity,
and Fasting. These three foundational activities allow us to
be open to the God who wants to change our hearts. In our
parishes and beyond we have many opportunities to mark the
Lenten season. This is also a good time for us to reach out in
compassion to our brothers and sisters in need. We all have
favorite charities, this year we can, perhaps, increase our
giving to those in need that surround us.
On the cluster level, I am happy to announce that we are in
collaboration with both St. Maron Church and the newly
linked parishes of Immaculate Heart of Mary in Harwinton
and Immaculate Conception Parish in New Hartford. Besides
our three scheduled Stations of the Cross each week, our
three Bible Studies each week, and our weekly Adoration

schedule, we will be sponsoring a weekly night at the movies,
which will be the chance to see a film on a Catholic
theme or a Catholic person. Our first film will be The Song of
Bernadette, the marvelous film of 1943 about the apparitions
at Lourdes. This is a classic American movie starring Jennifer
Jones. Our movie nights begin on Saturday, March 12 at
6:30 p.m. at Sacred Heart Hall. Refreshments will be provided.
This film is suitable for all audiences; however, the
subject matter might be a bit difficult to understand for
younger children.
I will be restarting my Thursday evening Bible Study at 6:00
p.m. in the Pastoral Center. This year we will begin exploring
Letter of James, probably one of the most beautiful letters in
Scripture. We begin on Thursday, March 10, at 6:00 p.m
We are joining with St. Maron Church in sharing Stations of
the Cross and they have invited us to be part of their three
night mission on three Wednesdays, March 23, 30 and April
6. The talks will be at 7:00 p.m. in St. Maron Church followed
by fellowship in the hall afterwards. The topics will be
on Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. In April we are joining
with the Catholic parishes of Harwinton and New Hartford in
bringing in Father Francis “Chuck” Fador a native son of the
cluster to present a three night mission at Immaculate Heart
of Mary Church in Harwinton. The talks will begin at 7:00
p.m. April 10, 11 and 12 th . The third night, Tuesday, April 12
will also be a Penance Service.
I am excited about this year’s Lenten program. Please plan to
be part of it. The blessing Pope John Paul II at the end of his
1996 Lenten message is as apt today as it was fifteen years
ago:
May the Lord grant us the grace to set out generously, in
prayer and penance, on the path towards the celebration of
Easter.

REGULATIONS
Abstinence from meat: Those 14
years of age and older must refrain
from eating meat on Ash Wednesday
and all Fridays of Lent.
Fasting: Those between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive
are to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. One is
permitted to eat one full meatless meal and two light
meatless meals. Eating between meals is not permitted,
although liquids and medicine may be taken.

The Community Soup Kitchen of Torrington
The Soup Kitchen is a non-profit, self-funding organization serving
a hot meal 365 days a year, to area residents in need. We will
be accepting monetary or non-perishable food items as a free
will donation.
The first program will feature Michael Fabiaschi, a THS graduate
drafted by the Oakland A’s in the 2010 MLB Draft. Michael will
conduct a 90 minute session and share tips, drills and demonstrate
techniques he has learned while playing baseball at the professional
level. This event is open to players of all ages, parents,
coaches and all those who love baseball!

9th Sunday in Ordinary Time
The downturn in the housing market has taken its toll on
plenty of people. From real estate agents to developers,
from mortgage bankers to members of the construction
trades, the lack of home building has severely curtailed
economic activity in all of these employment sectors.
The questionable practices of bundling, repackaging,
and trading mortgage assets by various financial institutions
as well as outright fraud on the part of some buyers
and sellers led to a banking crisis that threatened to
swamp the financial industry and destroy it much like
the house that was built on sand that is described in today's
Gospel. Many smaller banks and credit unions,
which continued to own the mortgages they wrote,
found themselves in the enviable position of having
solid assets. They were never in any danger of failing
despite the buffets of the economic storm.
For the most part, the financial institutions that
avoided trouble during the crisis lived by strong values
that had been inculcated into the fiber of their existence.
The boards of directors of these institutions were not
going to go out on a limb and try to find quick, easy
money. They may not have been glamorous investments,
but their worth was proven over time. These are
the banks and credit unions that more easily survived.
Holding on to solid values in life can help individuals
survive as well. In the Gospel, Jesus talks about those
who hear his words and then put them into practice.
Taking the values that Jesus teaches and making them a
part of everyday life ensures our connection to him.
When we think or act with the values of Jesus in the
forefront of our minds we build a firm foundation as a
structure for our lives. Forgiveness, love, a strong faith,
compassion toward others, patience, a desire for justice,
mercy, and a spirit of prayer are strong foundation
blocks for a holy life.

9º Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
El mundo sería muy diferente si todos los ciudadanos
que habitamos en él prestáramos atención a los
deberes y derechos que existen para respetarnos entre
sí. O sea, si siguiéramos las reglas sociales y morales
que reflejan el amor al prójimo. Estamos en tiempos en
que pasamos por alto todo lo que se refiere a la protección
del ser humano y la creación de Dios como beneficio
del bien común.
En la lectura de hoy del Deuteronomio, Dios nos
brinda una nueva exhortación a su pueblo esperando
que pongamos en práctica sus advertencias. Siempre es
buen tiempo para prestar atención y grabar sus consejos
en nuestro corazón, para que así estos nos ayuden a
tomar buenas decisiones en la vida. La lectura nos
habla de bendición y maldición, y es bueno que entendamos
esto perfectamente. Bendición es todo lo que
nos acerca a Dios y sus caminos. Bendición es ver todo
lo bueno que existe en nosotros. Maldición es todo lo
que nos desvía del camino de Dios y nos aparta de su
gracia. Así pues, el poner atención a las cosas de Dios
implica un cambio personal que nos lleva a la justicia y
nos libera de todo lo que nos aleja de Dios.
Todos debemos de ser conscientes que solo el Señor
Jesús nos salva: nadie somos perfectos. Tenemos que
actuar dando frutos buenos con hechos y palabras. Solo
de esta forma el Señor no nos separará de su lado,
como lo advierte el Evangelio: "Nunca los he conocido.
Aléjense de mí, ustedes, los que han hecho el
mal". ¡No olvidemos los consejos de Dios!
