APAC Amine Product Information

Huntsman Capabilities and Products
2
Huntsman Capabilities
Huntsman is a major integrated supplier of amines, many
of which have applications in the metalworking industry.
We have developed and continue to support our amine
process technologies in fully equipped laboratories and
pilot facilities in Europe and the United States.
Huntsman Products
Amines are an important component of metalworking fluids
and in metal cleaning applications where they provide
essential properties including corrosion inhibition and are a
source of reserve alkalinity.
The following is a brief introduction to those products which
are specifically recommended for use in metalworking.

AMINES FOR METALWORKING
Ethanolamines
Ethanolamines provide alkalinity and corrosion control to
metalworking fluids. Amine selection is based on metals
encountered, misting concern, toxicity, alkalinity requirements
and stability.
Specialty Amines
The following table provides data on the speciality
amines which are specifically recommended for use in
4
the formulation of metalworking fluids, where they provide
alkalinity control and corrosion inhibition.
AMINES FOR METALWORKING
DIGLYCOLAMINE® Agent
DIGLYCOLAMINE® Agent is a primary amine specifically
recommended for use in the manufacture of metalworking
fluids where it can be used as an alternative to
diethanolamine. The product is stoichiometrically equivalent
to diethanolamine and offers similar buffering
capacity, with salts offering improved hard water tolerance.
The product is non-volatile and has a low tendency
to leach copper, aluminium and cobalt (see figure 1).
DIGLYCOLAMINE® Agent has low acute toxicity and
has low toxicity to aquatic species. DGA® Agent is
non-mutagenic in “in vitro” systems and has low
nitrosamine potential. While the product is classed as
corrosive to the skin and eyes, similar to other strong
amines, it is not a dermal sensitizer.
BHEMA
BHEMA is a tertiary amine recommended for use in the
manufacture of metalworking fluids where it can be
used as an alternative to triethanolamine. The product
is a slightly stronger amine than triethanolamine which,
in combination with a lower molecular weight, results in
reduced usage levels for any required pH. BHEMA may
be used as a single amine, reducing the need for a second
primary amine such as monoethanolamine. The
product is non-volatile, has good copper and cobalt
leaching characteristics (see figure 1) and has a lower
tendency to stain aluminium than triethanolamine.
BHEMA has low mammalian and aquatic toxicity, has low
nitrosamine potential, and is not classified as corrosive.
SURFONAMINE® MW-781 Amine
SURFONAMINE® MW-781 amine is a primary amine
recommended for use in the manufacture of metal
working fluids. The product is a versatile additive for
use in synthetic and semi-synthetic products where it
offers multifunctional properties. In addition to being a
strong primary amine, salts of which tend to be low
foaming, the product also acts as a coupling agent and
has the potential to be a vapour phase corrosion
inhibitor.
POLYETHERAMINES
Huntsman manufactures a wide range of polyetheramines,
many of which find application in the formulation
of metalworking fluids, the following products
are specifically recommended:
• JEFFAMINE® D-2000 is a hydrophobic polyether
diamine which acts as a defoamer in semi-synthetic
and synthetic metalworking fluids.
• JEFFAMINE® T-403 is a low molecular weight
polyether amine containing three primary amine
groups. It offers low tendency to leach cobalt from
tooling and provides added lubricity.
