SAINT BERNARD’S COLLEGE VISION STATEMENT
“Achieve Excellence By Learning and Doing”
PRINCIPAL’S
MESSAGE
This year 2002 has seen many developments
within our College and in the
broader community of Edmund Rice
Schools throughout Australia. While
the Christian Brothers have been
administering schools in our country
for over 130 years, the model of governance
has largely been the same, with
the leadership of the Christian
Brothers’ congregation closely
involved in the running of schools –
both as individual entities and as a
system. Even with the advent of lay leadership of Edmund Rice
schools – with St. Bernard’s being one of the first in this state to
appoint a lay principal in 1989 – the Province Leaders had a direct
role in the administration of the schools.
In recent times there has been significant activity geared to altering
this form of governance. At the local school level, the role of the
Board has emerged as a very significant factor in providing leadership,
vision and challenge for schools. At St. Bernard’s we have been very
fortunate to have Board members who have provided great expertise
and put considerable energy into this task, and in many respects
they are providing guidance, that in past years would have been
provided by the Christian Brothers. Meanwhile, a taskforce has
been established by the Christian Brothers in Australia, to review
amongst other things how their governance of the 40 schools across
Australia will be managed into the future. During this period of time,
the principals of the schools have met on three occasions and
developed very valuable ties that will help guide this process. In
many senses we are moving into a new era of Edmund Rice Schools
2002 has been another successful twelve months for the Old
Collegians’ Association. Several enjoyable events were once again
held during the year, while attention was also directed to activities
beyond 2002.
The Association has been working with the Old Collegians’ sporting
bodies and the College as plans are finalised for a new pavilion,
which is to be constructed adjacent to the ovals. The modern, spacious
building will be a great asset for both the College and the various
Old Collegian groups. It is exciting to think that the Old Boys’
Association will be able to play a role in this project.
Initial steps were taken during the year towards the establishment of
an Internet based system which facilitates communication not only
between The Association and Old Boys, but also between past
The Strand
News From
and we are well placed at St. Bernard’s to make the most of this new
situation.
Meanwhile the College has seen growth in all sorts of areas in the
past twelve months. The new Year 12 and AGERE building has
proven to be a very helpful facility for the staff and students who use
it. The new Pool and weights room, along with the relocated
Canteen, have been popular with the students and the broader
community. Our new program for Year 9 students, based at Santa
Monica, has been a great success and we appreciate the work of our
staff who are based down there, in working up a great course for the
students to follow. The music and performing arts continue to thrive,
with a significant number of students on The Strand campus learning
a musical instrument and playing in one of the ensembles. Our
students continue to excel in other areas, such as sport and the like.
This has been the result of many staff in these areas devoting their
time to helping students do so well, and we owe a debt of gratitude
to these staff members for such a generous contribution.
A school is like a living organism as it grows and develops. We
constantly see families, students and staff joining us, spending part
of their life with us and moving on – so often with the College being
the richer for their contribution. To all those who are finishing their
time at St Bernard’s - be they students, families or staff, I sincerely
thank them for their time with us. The good reputation the College
holds in the community is due to the wonderful work and contribution
of people such as these.
St.
Bernard’s Old Collegians’ association
students. As technology advances, we all need to consider changing
with the times. So it may not be too far down the track that
St.Bernard’s Old Collegians’ Association goes online.
The Association extends a warm welcome to its newest life members,
who were presented with membership key-rings at this year’s
Valete Dinner, and trusts they will enjoy a long and beneficial
involvement with the group.
Congratulations to Andrew Gauci and Mathew Tinney on sharing
the Old Collegians’ sponsored College Golden Jubilee Award, for
being the Year 12 students in 2002 who most significantly
contributed to college life. This sponsorship includes $1,000, which
is intended to assist in the recipient’s further education expenses.
St.
Bernard’s Old Collegians’ association
Congratulations also go to Joe Angel who is this year’s winner of the
College Sports Award, which is sponsored by the Old Boys’
Association.
2002 also brought with it a most enjoyable fifth annual dinner,
which was held on August 16 and attended by over three hundred
Old Boys. It was our great pleasure to have Mr. Francis Leach as the
keynote speaker. Francis graduated from the College as Dux in 1985
and has established a successful career in the media. Some may be
familiar with his work as host of a nationally broadcast radio
program on the ABC youth network, Triple J. While others may know
him from calling the AFL on ABC Radio National or appearances on
several AFL programs on both radio and pay television. During his
speech, Francis shared some of his experiences and memories of
St.Bernard’s, together with the positive impact of the recent birth of
his second child.
Another highlight of the year was the annual golf day, which was
held on 25 October at Medway Golf Club. This event grows in popularity
each year, under the expert guidance of tournament referee,
Michael Perrett. This year the honours went to Gavin Saunders ‘90
and his four comprising Keith Saunders ‘87; Dean Smith and David
Limon, with a great day being had by all. Again our thanks to our
Major Sponsors of Peter Reilly ’69 of AUSDOC Group Limited;
Geoff Harris ‘70 of Harris Freer Toyota and Martin McGrath ’69 of
AIM Investment Management. Thanks to all other sponsors and the
128 players who made the day such a success.
This year’s success is largely due to the efforts of the Association’s
Committee, which includes Shane Delaney, James Henderson,
David Sullivan, Michael Perrett, Frank Simone, and Ron Stobaus.
Michael’s contribution to the group and has again been particularly
outstanding, and many thanks are extended to him for his time,
energy and patience throughout the year.
St.Bernard’s College Old Collegians’ Association exists due to the
belief that the relationships which are formed during the years spent
at St. Bernard’s are valuable and worth developing. A vibrant old
boy’s network creates opportunities for former students spanning
over sixty years and many walks of life to benefit from each other’s
F ROM THE EDITOR
Another big year for the College has just finished and it is gratifying
to witness, not only the College’s growth, but also the successes of
affiliated organisations.
In addition to organising the Annual Dinner, the Golf Day, the Mass
for deceased old boys and reunions of past students, the Old
Collegians’ Association oversees the running of a number of sporting
clubs that carry the College’s name. These are the St. Bernard’s
Old Collegians’ Football Club; Cricket Club; Athletic Club;
Basketball Club and Volleyball Club. With the newly opened
facilities a Hockey Club and Swimming Club are envisaged.
Certainly the highlight of the year for these Clubs was the sensational
performance of the Football Club in winning the prestigious A grade
flag in the VAFA. The club only lost two games throughout the
season and look set to put their mark on the competition for a
number of years to come.
Congratulations to all responsible for their efforts in enabling these
clubs to operate so successfully. All are run by voluntary labour and
are a credit to those willing workers who help out so diligently.
The next major building programme, set down by the College, is the
construction of new change, social and meeting rooms at the
College ovals. These rooms will replace the rooms that were
constructed in the late 50’s and are in dire need of repair. They will
also provide a facility that our current students and all old boy clubs
can utilise.
knowledge and experience. Given this, The Old Collegians’
Association aims to provide a relevant framework which allows Old
Boys to support not only each other, but also the College. The
Association looks forward to continuing the pursuit of this goal during
the next twelve months.
Mathew Tinney and Andrew Gauci
However like everything they will come at a cost. A cost, in excess
of $1,000,000, that the College cannot manage without help.
So for the first time we are seeking the help of the Old Boy community.
In the last edition of The Strand we asked for support and were
extremely pleased with the response. We received pledges of around
$40,000. To make this new facility a reality we need $250,000, So
if you are considering pledging to the 100% tax deductible Appeal
please do so as soon as convenient. A reply paid envelope is included
for your convenience. To those who have already pledged – thank you.
In The News
Mike Walsh ‘66, recently recorded his 400th game as scorer for the
Essendon 1st X1 in Premier Cricket. In addition he has scored for the
Australian team in 94 Tests and 210 one day games and 60 games
for Victoria. Mike started with Essendon as a 14 year old in the
1963-64 season.
Managing bands is all Daniel Rogers ‘91 has ever wanted to do. He
recently completed a business enterprise course, which has led to
him starting his own business. Daniel worked in America, as
manager’s assistant to “Powderfinger” and “Something for Kate”,
bands that are known internationally. He is currently managing an
alternative rock band “Gersey” and has already organised some
successful tours including three national and one international tour.
Luke Anderson ‘99 always wanted to work with horses. However the
20 year old thought that growing up in suburban Melbourne and
never having contact with the animals meant that working in the
equine industry would be impossible. But he decided to pursue his
dream, after leaving St.Bernard’s and enrolled in a two year Diploma
of Horse Studies course at Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE.
Now he is preparing for three months work experience at the
prestigious Cambridge Stud in New Zealand after winning a $2500
scholarship.
“Winning the scholarship was one of the goals I set and it will help
me to be successful in the equine industry,” Luke said. When he
returns from New Zealand he will begin a full time position at
Gisborne South stud Tremon Thoroughbreds.
Congratulations and best wishes for the future Luke.
Managing Director of Holden Special Vehicles, John Crennan ‘63,
did nothing to diffuse the car war between Holden and Ford when
he was quoted in Inside Sport, when asked to elaborate on Holden’s
dominance, “What always amazes me is that I go on holiday once a
year and use my three weeks for working out how we’re going to be
more effective. But I think others go on holidays and sit on a sun
lounge. Why aren’t they generating improvement?”
Chris Perrett ‘92, made page 5 of the Herald Sun when he had a
lucky escape from the Bali bombings. In fact bad sunburn saved him
and his fiancee Rebecca Wills. “We were across the road from the
Sari Club about 9:30pm and my fiancee was complaining she was
sunburnt so, thank God we left,” Chris said. “I would have sat there
and drunk all night. Sunburn saved our lives.”
In between his VCE Studies, Tim Jovanovic has found time to
compete in a state karate competition, two national contests and an
Oceania championship. And Tim scooped first place in each event.
In March he won the junior and senior divisions at the Victorian
Open Karate Championships and followed up by taking out 1st
place at the Australian Open Karate Championships in Sydney in
August. He repeated the performance in Sydney, in October, at the
Oceania Championships. Unfortunately his Year 12 studies prevented
him competing in Spain with the Australian team at the world
championships in November.
Well done Tim and best wishes for your future in the sport.
Congratulations to Sam Pennisi ‘57, and Pennisi Real Estate who
have won the Leader Newspaper group’s Small Business award in
the real estate category.
The Under 19 Football team received publicity in both the Herald
Sun and The Age when they defeated Williamstown by 257 points.
They amassed a whopping 39.25.259 to Williamstown’s 0.2.2. The
amazing thing was that every St.Bernard’s player scored a goal. The
team went on to win the premiership by 15 goals. A great
performance as they only lost two games for the season.
Year 11 student Damiano Lo Nigro has been selected from nearly
2000 applicants to be one of 282 students to attend the National
Youth Science Forum being held, for 2 weeks, in Canberra in January
2003. Students selected must be at the top of the science classes at
their school and intend to follow a career in science.
Luigi Lucente received the prestigious Recitation Award for Year 9
Italian Recitation at the Dante Alighieri Society Awards Night in
October 2002.
Ben Jolley of Year 11 represented Victoria in the Australian Under 16
football championships.
Sam Dunell of Year 7 has been selected to represent Victoria in the
Victorian Schools 12 Years of Age Cricket team.
In Kairos recently, Fr. Gerard Dowling OAM; Dean of St.Patrick’s
Cathedral; spoke of his recent visit to the College when he was guest
presenter at the Whole School Awards and Final Year 12 Assembly.
He began by sharing with them the reality that “in my years at the
College, 1943-1948, I had never received a prize for academic or
sporting achievements. That led on to my first point that they ought
to prize themselves not on achievement or on success but on their
intrinsic worth as unique and valuable human beings.”
Here is the winner of The Sportsman of the Year Award Joe Angel being
presented with his award by past student and guest presenter, the Dean
of St.Patrick’s Cathedral Gerard Dowling.
ECHOES FROM THE ARCHIVES
SBC Forty-seven to
Forty-niners
John Andressen was the principle organiser of a recent reunion of
the “47 -49’s”. At the completion of the function he was good
enough to forward me the following correspondence and Arthur
Adams the photos. Many thanks to those who helped organise the
function and congratulations on your performance of having so
many in attendance. Good luck for next year’s event.
“As discussed briefly the other day, the reunion function for those
students of St. Bernard's College who were in Forms 3, 4 and 5 in
the years 1947-48-49 respectively, was held on 16th October, at the
Moonee Valley Tabaret. Arthur Adams, Kevin Bourne and I
succeeded in tracing the addresses of 37 of the 48 students from
those years whom we believed to be still surviving. (At least seven
have passed away.) Of the 37 approaches made, we had 34 responses,
and a surprisingly good turn-up of 22 of our classmates presented
themselves on the day. Of the dozen non-attenders, illness prevented
the acceptance by a couple of those who would have liked to have
come (David Dennett and Warren Prest), whilst the remainder
included a number who now live interstate, together with several
who happened to be either overseas or interstate on the date of the
reunion. The last-mentioned group were all keen to attend any future
function of this type.
All those attending had a great afternoon, reliving those old days
under Brothers Smith, McCartney and Redmond, and bringing one
another up to date on what had been happening in their lives
during the past fifty or so years since many of them had last seen one
another. Interestingly, the question of the need for name tags had
earlier been debated among our little committee, and we eventually
decided to have some on hand, "just in case". Sadly, they proved to
be absolutely essential in a number of cases, as the ravages of time
had markedly changed the appearance of so many of the old class
mates whom we had known so well back then!
With the success of this function, all those present agreed that there
should now be regular future reunions of our "SBC Forty-seven to
Forty-niners" group, and we plan on getting together again next
October.
Six of the cricket team from 1947 attended the luncheon,
and posed in the attached photo, appearing in their same relative
positions.
St. Bernard’s Old Collegians’
Football Club
Success At Last
Season 2002 delivered the Holy Grail to St. Bernard’s Old
Collegians’ Football Club. What had begun as a season of hope
and some finals expectations ended in glory and premiership
success. A resounding 31 point Grand Final demolition of rivals
Old Xaverians set the seal on an emphatic and dominant season.
Many factors are involved in ultimate success and fortunately for
us most things went right for the club. We were fortunate not to
suffer many injuries and gathered momentum during the season.
It is not fair to single out individuals in a team success, but
special mention must be made of 1st season coach, Peter
Nicholson. The reputation, which preceded his arrival, was, as
we discovered, not exaggerated. His professionalism, dedication,
preparation and positive outlook gave this club a huge advantage
over its rivals.
The co-operation of Joe Watkins and the match committee saw
the reserves reach the finals and complement the senior’s
success. The Under 19’s just missed the finals while the Under 19
Reds won the Grand Final by a mere 15 goals. Great credit is
reflected on David Law and an outstanding bunch of young players
on their wonderful achievement.
The Junior Club under the direction of Michael Overman once
again enjoyed a most entertaining and successful season to
complete a 2002 season to remember.
This will be my last report as Peter O’Connor takes over the
position as Director of Football. I urge all our football community
to continue to support our club and our sponsors and trust that
we may repeat our success in 2003.
Further mention must also be made of our Major Sponsor the
North Suburban Sports Club of 622 Mount Alexander Road
Moonee Ponds.
We urge you to give them your support whenever possible. They
continue to maintain a fine dining and drinking area and a most
comfortable gaming lounge.
Cricket Club
St. Bernard's Old Collegians Cricket Club has made a promising
start to season 2002/ 2003.
In the Seniors, who compete in the Victorian Turf Cricket
Association (V.T.C.A.), three of four teams are currently in the
four, at almost the halfway mark. The Club has appointed a new
Captain Coach, Quinton Gleeson, for the season and he has
brought considerable experience and a positive attitude to our
young senior team, which has resulted in some encouraging
wins thus far.
In the Juniors, who compete in the North West Cricket
Association, four of the five teams have experienced successes
thus far, with the Under 14 A team, under manager John Hughes
struggling in its section, although it has just lost to each of the top
teams by 1 run. The Under 16 A team, under manager Tony
Isaacs, is competitive in a very strong competition and the Under
16D teams, with John Raffle as manager, is lying second on the
ladder.Under 14E, under Mick Overman and Under 12's, with
Maurice Sullivan as manager, have won their share of games and
are showing continual improvement as the season progresses.
The Club has appointed Paul Gale, an accredited VIS Coach, to
oversee development of the junior teams and this has reaped
rewards with the individual progression of our junior cricketers.
The on field success of the Club has been evident with the 4
senior teams each winning in the one round on 3 occasions thus
far in the season. There have been several junior players training
in representative squads and Nick Serrano was selected to play
in the V.T.C.A. Under 21 Representative team.
The Club has been quite pleased with the progress made and the
development of the young senior players, especially those who
participated in the off season development squad under the guidance
of Lindsay Walker, an International accredited Cricket
Coach.
Athletics Club
Monday 14th of October the Keilor St.Bernard's Athletic Club
Inc. held a special celebration to acknowledge the achievements
of the Club members over the the last year. In the Cross Country
season just concluded, the Club won four Premierships;
Mens Division 4; Men Forty Plus; Men Under 18 and Women
Under 14. They also finished second in Mens Division 2 and as
a consequence will be promoted to Mens Division 1 next year.
Our forty plus women also finished second, as did our Under 14
men. Division 7 men; Under 20 women and the second Under
14 girls team also finished third. The Under 14 girls, in winning
the Under 14 premiership, completed a remarkable feat, of
being undefeated in any event at the State level for the past two
years. Three members of this team represented the State in
National Primary and National Secondary School
Championships, as did three of the Under 18 boys. Peter
Gaffney was again the outstanding athlete of the men and Lisa
Biffin of the women.
The Club also had seventeen competitors in the World Masters
Games, who between them won 17 medals; 7 Gold, 2 Silver
and 8 Bronze. The age group of these competitors spanned 35
years with the youngest being 34 and the oldest 69. Guest
attendees of the night were Bill and Jean D'aprano, from Atlanta
Georgia, who between them had won 4 Gold medals in the 75
plus and 65 plus. They were most impressed with the club set up
and the involvement of such a wide range of people in the
community, being both males and females from 10 to 69. Also
the commitment and dedication of all those involved, even to the
young mothers getting back into shape after babies and training
during pregnancy to keep as fit as possible for the birth and
some of the mums who walk as a group while the children train.
Received an interesting note from Peter Overman ‘52, explaining the
origin of The Strand in Moonee Ponds - after which this newsletter is
named.
“My Grandfather C.E.Overman used tell some interesting stories of
Old Essendon of the 1870’s & ‘80’s. His parents died when he was
only a lad and he lived with a married sister in a house in one of the
side streets off Mount Alexander Road, near the Court House.
I understand that he went to school at Moonee Ponds West and one
of his contemporaries was one GEORGE KINNEAR. Some year later,
I suspect it would have been late ‘80’s / ‘90’s. George apparently set
up one of his first rope making machines along the North side of
what is now known as Queen’s Park Lake.
The thoroughfare running through there from Mount Road to Pascoe
Vale Road was subsequently known as “The Strand’ - a connection
with George’s early ropes rather than with a well known thoroughfare
in London.
Seeing that your Newsletter has the same name, it occurred to me
that this small story may be of historical interest, as well as the
Fr. Ray Hevern
The recently announced new Leader of the Australian Pallotines is
old boy Fr.Ray Hevern ‘58. Ray was a keen footballer and athlete
whilst at school and in fact discovered the Pallotines, whilst on a
school retreat as a 17 year old. After ordination in 1966, Ray spent
a couple of years in Tardun, in West Australia, and then to Balgo - a
place that he transformed and transformed him. Big changes were
called for and he responded. He supported the aboriginal people as
they awakened to their rights. He returned children who had been
living in dormitories to living with their parents. He was instrumental
in preparing a town plan, with service infrastructure - housing,
recreational, commercial. He established a reliable supply route
from Alice Springs, which included a charter airline. Drilling for
water was rewarded with an unlimited supply of excellent water.
The cattle station “Ngulupi” was consolidated and the introduction
of a ‘work for the dole system’ of unemployment benefits brought
income into the community and raised the work ethos. The population
Jarrod Carland
After leaving St. Bernard's in 1992, Jarrod commenced studying
opera at the Victorian College of the Arts. After a year of study,
Jarrod began singing with the Victoria State Opera in productions
such as Aida, Carmen, Don Quichotte, Ruddigore, and The Puccini
Spectacular. He soon after commenced singing with The Australian
Opera and performed in nearly 20 productions with this company.
Other performing credits include Magdalena for Ballarat Opera
Festival and Into the Woods with John Wood and Gina Riley.
After working as an opera singer for four years with Australia's major
opera companies, Jarrod moved to Perth to study at the prestigious
WA Academy of Performing Arts, after being offered a place in the
world-renowned Musical Theatre course, where he studied acting,
singing and dance.
Since graduating from WAAPA in 2000, Jarrod has appeared in The
Sign of the Seahorse for Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the
Melbourne Concert Hall, The Fat Boy for Playbox Theatre Company,
original St.Bernard’s College being located in approximately the
same position.
I remember an early contemporary at St. Bernard’s in the early ‘50’s
being a fellow called Paul Kinnear and I think he may have been
George’s grandson.”
Thank you Peter for the most interesting story and Peter is shown
expanded rapidly - from 250 in 1969 to 700 in 1976. It was very
important for Ray to provide a Catholic school system and he did
this by attracting religious congregations to this desert place, to take
charge of education. This led to the flourishing of indigenous
Christian art. In fact some local artists became known world wide in
a short time. Appropriately, Ray’s role changed with the development
of the abilities of the indigenous people.
Ray was elected to the Regional council in 1985 and as he could
not attend the regular meetings while living at isolated Balgo, the
next few months were spent in the Aboriginal Ministry in Geraldton.
Ray quickly established many contacts, which made him ready for
taking over the administration at Tardu in 1987.A role he has filled
until this appointment.
We congratulate Ray on his appointment as Regional Superior of the
Pallotines and wish him well for his important work.
Planning for the establishment of an Old Collegians’ Foundation
that will support the College in a financial manner is in its infancy.
It is intended that this Foundation, among other things would:
1. Provide a significant number and variety of scholarships
2. Assist needy families whose sons are already attending the
school
3. Enhance the educational environment of the College in ways
that offer the widest range of opportunities to the greatest number.
A Foundation launch is anticipated for Sunday 2nd March 2003
Active on this planning group is Peter Reilly ’69 and Martin
McGrath ’69. If you believe you can assist this group in their
important work further details can be obtained from Michael
Perrett on 9289 1106.
in St.Bernard’s history, with Mary’s seven sons all having graduated
through the College and five of her 25 grandchildren
having done likewise. In a very moving tribute at St.Therese’s
Church there were many recollections of Mary’ and Des’ years
of service to the College and Old Collegian sporting teams.
Mary is survived by her husband Des, who was the architect for
many of the early buildings at the Essendon Campus and her
