Northern Kentucky University Research Foundation
The Northern Kentucky University Research Foundation was created in October 2004 as a
not-for-profit corporation to receive, invest, and expend funds to promote and implement
scientific and educational activities at Northern Kentucky University. During Fiscal Year
2007-08, the NKURF Board of Directors met on October 24, 2007 and February 14, 2008.

Proposals Submitted and Grants Awarded
Fiscal Year 2007-08
The graphs and tables on the next three pages document grant activity trends during the last six
fiscal years.
During FY2007-08, faculty and staff submitted 174 proposals with total budgeted amounts of
$22.7 million, an 11% increase versus previous fiscal year. This total submittal reflects the
efforts of 112 individual faculty members. The university received 106 awards, a funding
amount of $8.0 million.
The FY2007-08 submitted proposals requested more than $22.7 million and the grants awarded
totaled $8.0 million. As seen in Figure 2, there is a decrease in awarded dollars compared to the
prior two years. A contributing factor to this decrease is that newer faculty pursued grant
opportunities that tended to be smaller awards.

Sources of External Grants Awarded through the Research Foundation and RGC
There are four primary sources of external grant funding awarded to Northern Kentucky
University in any fiscal year.
Federal Funding is sought and awarded directly from federal agencies. Examples of agencies
that awarded funding to NKU this year are the National Science Foundation, the National
Institutes of Health, and the U.S. Department of Education.
Federal Flow-Through Funding is sought and awarded from the state of Kentucky. Federal
agencies sometimes award large blocks of funding directed to a designated program in
Kentucky. NKU then will apply to and receive funding from the state for what are essentially
federal funds, i.e., flow-though. An example of these funds at NKU is the National Science
Foundation’s Experimental Programs to Stimulate Competitive Research (KY NSF EPSCoR).
State Funding is sought and awarded directly from the state. These funds originate in Kentucky
and are awarded to Kentucky institutions.
Other Funding includes grants received by NKU that do not fit into the above categories.
Examples of this funding at NKU are grants from nonprofit agencies such as Heath Foundation
of Greater Cincinnati and Manuel D. and Rhoda Mayerson Foundation.

Office of Research, Grants, and Contracts
The Office of Research, Grants, and Contracts (RGC) provides a variety of support services for
external grant identification, grant proposal writing and submission, dissemination about faculty
research and creative work, and support for faculty and student research. At the same time, RGC
is responsible for compliance with NKU, federal, state, and private sponsor requirements.

Services
RGC encourages and assists faculty and staff to seek external funds to support their research,
creative activities, and programmatic ideas; the goal is to enrich NKU and allow it to contribute
to the vitality of the region, the creation and dissemination of new knowledge or new
applications of current knowledge, the enhancement of students’ educational experiences, and
the expansion of the creative arts. Key RGC services include:
• Assist faculty and staff with idea development for future grant proposals.
• Share techniques about how to find funding and how to write successful grant proposals.
• Help with cross-discipline proposals.
• Create detailed budgets.
• Submit proposals, both electronic and paper-based.
• Assist faculty to incorporate reviewer’s comments and resubmit proposal revisions.
• Review and accept awards resulting in approval of NKU grant accounts for the Principle
Investigators and assist with compliance to federal, state, and NKU spending guidelines.
• Create and negotiate contracts and agreements involving sponsored projects.
• Administer Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee
(IACUC), and Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) to ensure that NKU is in compliance
with use of human and animal subjects in research.
To help faculty and staff generate highly competitive proposals, RGC sponsored five workshops
in FY2007/08:
Orientation to NKU External Grant Proposal Development and Submission: The September
2007 workshop was geared to first- and second-year faculty. The February 2008 workshop was
open to all faculty and staff. Key content included an overview of the support provided by RGC,
the available search tools for locating funding opportunities, and tips on how to draft a successful
proposal. Twenty-eight participants attended, and their feedback was very positive.
How to Efficiently Search for External Funding. This workshop was geared to faculty and staff
who are relatively inexperienced in searching for and identifying external grant funds for
research projects and programs. Two workshops, in October and in March, were attended by 17
participants, all of whom provided positive feedback.

May Grant Proposal Writing Workshop, attended by 17 faculty members, was a three-day
experience that required significant commitment on the part of the participants. As a
prerequisite to the workshop, participants identified their proposal idea and funding source.
Next, they worked with RGC staff to confirm that NKU met the funding agency’s requirements.
Targeted agencies spanned federal, state, and foundation opportunities. The workshop then
focused on how to develop a proposal, covering topics such as creating problem statements,
writing with the reviewer in mind, and developing a complete budget.
As an incentive, RGC offered a $500 faculty enhancement award to participants if they submit a
proposal within a year from the workshop. Through this award, participants have the
opportunity to increase their scholarly endeavors. In the previous May 2007 workshop, 12 out of
19 participants (63%) earned this award.
In addition to offering workshops, RGC staff conducts information sessions with colleges,
departments, groups, and individual faculty to assist in idea development and proposal generation.
These sessions foster close working relationships between the faculty/staff and RGC staff. The
sessions also provide RGC staff with opportunities to share tips about identifying external funding
and in preparing high quality, fundable proposals.
Other Support for Faculty and Staff
RGC offers Cost Share support to faculty and staff: When NKU is required by a funding
agency to participate in sharing the cost of a proposed project, RGC, the researcher’s college,
and his/her department work together to meet the “cost share” requirement, which might
include both in-kind contributions and cash. The vast majority of the cash match is provided
by an account established through the Provost’s Office. During FY2007-08, $79,155 in cash
matches were provided to support awarded grants.
Two internal research-funding opportunities for tenured or tenure-track faculty are offered:

Support for Student Research and Creativity
The Celebration of Student Research and Creativity highlights graduate and undergraduate
student achievements in a broad array of scholarly and creative activities. Students display their
scholarship and creativity through posters, oral presentations, interactive demonstrations,
performances, and exhibits of artistic work.
The Sixth Annual Celebration of Student Research and Creativity was held on April 8-10, 2008,
with posters being presented in Steely Library on April 9. There were 140 student projects
involving 371 students who were advised by 106 faculty sponsors. This event was made
possible through the leadership of the Center for Integrative Natural Science and Mathematics
(CINSAM) and contributions of time and effort from a committee of faculty across campus.
The Student Undergraduate Research & Creativity Award (SURCA) provides up to $500 per
undergraduate student to complete a research project or creative activity. (This amount increased to
$600 in spring 2008.) This grant competition supports undergraduate students’ research and creative
projects that will contribute to new insights in the students’ chosen fields. In FY2007-08, 9
SURCAs were awarded totaling $4,700.

Heritage Tourism Experience, advised by Professor Carol Medlicott, History and
Geography.
• Michael Hester, Testing the Passage of Biotinylated G5 PAMAM Dendrimer Nanoparticles
across a Viable In Vitro Model of the Blood Brain Barrier, advised by Professor Kristi Haik,
Biological Sciences.
• Megan Kramer, Behavioral and Neuroanatomical Evaluation of Thiamine Deficiency as an

• Stephen Wall, Impact of Metal Oxide/Aqueous Interfaces on Biofilm Formation: Probing the
Role of Siderophores, advised by Professor Heather Bullen, Chemistry.

The Summer Undergraduate Research/Creativity Fellowship (SURF) competition encourages
and supports undergraduate students during the summer to undertake intensive research and
creative projects under the tutelage of a faculty member. SURF provides each student with a
$3,500 stipend and a supplies allowance up to $600. (This was a total increase of $1,100 versus
FY2006-07.) Recipients of the awards are able to focus on their research and creative work since
the stipend substitutes for money they would have earned at a summer job. In FY2007-08, two
SURFs were awarded totaling $8,200.
Congratulations to these SURF grant awardees:
• Kyle Corder, Analysis of Small Finds from Pre-Historic Non Mak La, advised by Professor
Judy Voelker, Sociology, Anthropology, Philosophy.
• Paige Malott, One Last Taste, advised by Professor Chris Strobel, Electronic Media and
Broadcasting.
The Graduate Student Research Grant (GSRG) provides up to $750 per graduate student to
complete a research project or creative activity. This grant competition encourages and supports
graduate-level students to undertake research and creative projects that will contribute new
insights in students’ chosen fields. In FY2007-08, three GSRGs were awarded totaling $2,250.
Congratulations to these GSRG grant awardees:
• Cari Bisang, Conflict in the Workplace and Expatriate Adjustment: The Impact of Cross-
Cultural Training on Overseas Assignments, advised by Professor Phil Moberg, Psychology
• Tye Mortensen, Online Networks in Process Change and Innovation, advised by Professor
Gary Ozanich, Communications.
• Timothy Trenkamp, Prague’s New Town: City Expansion in the Later Middle Ages, advised
by Professor William Landon, History & Geography.
The Student Presentation/Publication Award (SPPA) gives students the opportunity to travel
to events and conferences where they will present or perform their own scholarly and/or creative
projects. Each student is eligible for up to $400 in a single fiscal year. In FY2007-08, 52 SPPAs
were awarded totaling over $12,400.

Federal Compliance
In fulfilling its responsibilities for compliance, RGC serves as the administrative office for the
protection of human subjects in research, the care and protection of animal subjects in research,
and oversight of activities involving recombinant DNA, biological materials, and select agents as
defined by U.S. federal agencies.
The Institutional Review Board (IRB), consisting of NKU researchers, a non-scientist, and a
non-university affiliated member, has institution-wide responsibility for:
• Assuring the protection of human subjects involved in research activities.
• Assuring that the university fulfills its contractual obligations relative to the protection of
human subjects.
• Maintaining the policies and procedures for the protection of human subjects that are, at a
minimum, in accordance with regulations of federal and other granting agencies.
The IRB files Federal-wide Assurances with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP). In FY2007-08, the IRB reviewed 204
protocols for research by NKU faculty and students, continuing a trend of increasing number of
protocols.
In addition to providing valuable training to faculty and student researchers, the web-based CITI
program (which provides comprehensive instruction on the ethics, procedures, and issues
addressed in responsible research involving human subjects) was welcomed by the research
community and utilized by courses in the College of Nursing and College of Education and
Human Services.
The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), consisting of researchers, a
student representative, a non-scientist, a non-university affiliated member, and a veterinarian,
met regularly to review programs involving animal subjects and to inspect the facilities used in
animal research. In compliance with the policies of the Public Health Service Office of
Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW), the IACUC also reviews all new and renewal applications
for protocols involving animals used in research. In FY2007-08, five new studies were approved
and seven other ongoing studies were approved by the IACUC. The committee also oversees
training for animal handlers.
The Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) was established in FY2007-08 to provide
oversight for university instructional and research activities involving recombinant DNA,
culturing of microorganisms, agents infectious to plants, humans, and animals, human gene
therapy, cultures of tissues, organs, and cells of human origin, and Select Agents as defined by
U.S. federal agencies. The committee consists of researchers, two non-university affiliated
members, and a biological safety officer. Two new protocols have been approved this fiscal
year.
