Synthetic Phonics
Programme
c
The children quickly became
competent readers and
writers. Synthetic phonics really
made a huge difference
to my classroom
b
— Elizabeth Smee, Blaxcell St. Public School, Sydney
• Presents phonics as a ‘first and fast’ approach to
reading
• Teaches daily phonics lessons covering the 44
sounds from the simple to the complex
• Innovatively teaches irregular, high frequency
words as ‘camera words’
• Teaches reading and spelling hand-in-hand
• Multi-sensory and fun!
• Intervenes early so all children move on together
• Gives children lots of success with fully
decodable readers
• Assessment at every step of learning
Hundreds of schools from
Hong Kong to England use our
synthetic phonics programme and
every time we see the same success.
Children learn to read quickly, their writing
excels, spelling confidence grows, and those
who are struggling catch up. Children taught with
synthetic phonics consistently do better than those
taught with any other approach. This groundwork
sets them up for a much smoother education
experience right through primary and
secondary school.
Ready for Fast Improvements
in your Literacy Results?
• Children can read and spell over 40 words in the first 3
weeks of learning
• It helps all children; especially those who need some help
catching up
• It works with second language children; tackle difficulties
in pronunciation and enrich vocabulary
Help children needing extra support reach their potential with
synthetic phonics. Homework and Teaching Assistant activities
include step-by-step instructions alongside ready-to-go games
and resources. Simply photocopy the units and, without additional
training, you have everything you need to intervene early and
ensure every child becomes a successful reader and speller!
Synthetic
Phonics
Take Away
Don’t overload children’s working memory by asking them to write
as well as get to grips with blending and segmenting - use magnetic
letters. Designed especially for the synthetic phonics basic code, they:
• Include double letters (digraphs) and an ‘s’ for plurals
• Are 100% magnetised so you won’t have the magnets falling off
• Are all in blue (because writing is in one colour!) and in primary font
Target phonemes — s m c t g p a o Lesson 1 of 10
Date: Teacher:
What I’m teaching:
• Explore and experiment with phonemes,
words and text
• Link phonemes to letters
What we’re learning:
• We are learning to match some phonemes
and letters together to help us read and
spell words
How did we do?
• We will be able to recognise and pronounce
at least four new phonemes
Camera Words
Teach the irregular, high
frequency words with the
innovative ‘camera words’.
What I need:
• Teacher’s board with magnetic letters
s m c t g p a o arranged in a line
• Individual Fly Swatter sheet (pg 167) - one per
child
• Thumbs Up? Thumbs Down? (pg 116)
Getting ready:
Seat the children on the carpet facing the teacher’s
board. Seat any children requiring support at the
front. Have the teaching assistant at the back
ready to support as required.
Display and share childspeak learning intention and success criteria with the class.
Learn with me
Display the teacher’s whiteboard with magnetic letters. Select the letter ‘S’. Slide it to the middle of the
board; as the letter is moved pronounce the phoneme /s/. Have the children repeat the phoneme after
you. Check for correct pronunciation with the whole class. Select individual children to pronounce
phonemes to ensure understanding. Repeat for each of the target phonemes.
Your turn
Give each child an Individual Fly Swatter sheet with the target phonemes written on the flies. Slide the
letter ‘S’ to the middle of your whiteboard, ask the children to look at the letter and say the phoneme. Then
ask the children to locate the phoneme on the sheet, point to it and say the phoneme. Repeat for the
remaining phonemes. To extend this activity, more able children could work with the teaching assistant.
The adult says the phoneme rather than showing it on the magnetic board. Children then locate correct
phoneme independently.
Back together
Review the childspeak target and success criteria. Play Thumbs Up? Thumbs Down? using phonemes rather
than words. In the box below record the names of any children who cannot recognise at least four of the eight
phonemes.
Word Lists
Ideas for extra support
Ask a teaching assistant/parent to repeat main
lesson with those children identified as requiring
extra support. Ensure that the phonemes are
pronounced correctly by the adult.
Every unit has a word list; so you’ll never get
stuck thinking of a word.
