President's Report
The NSW Reining Horse Association State Championship and Futurity Show for
2012 went down as a great success with a swag of positive feedback and some
tips for making it more successful next year.
We had just under 200 entries with over 65 horse/ rider combinations, competitors
travelled from as far as North Queensland and the bottom of Victoria, making the
competition fierce, we also had the opportunity to showcase some of the best
reining horses in the country. On the Saturday night we attracted a crowd of over
200 people and a further 200 people viewed the show through the internet on
iStreamTV.
The entertainment on Saturday night included Greg Powel who provided a crowd
pleasing horsemanship display followed by local equestrian Janice Usherwood on
her trusty horse Northern Atlas who performed a freestyle to the music of Dr
Who. This was a great entrée to our major futurity event which included over 17
horses and was won by Warren Backhouse riding Rocin on the Ranch with a
mighty score of 150 points.
Lisa has mentioned individual thankyou’s in her secretaries report but I would
like to point out that the dedication and effort given by the committee and
volunteers attributed to the success of this show, their efforts are a reflection of
the shows success.
I would like to personally acknowledge Lisa Lawson for the pre & post work that
is required as a show secretary, not the easiest of tasks but one the club can’t do
without. She does this all on top of organising canteen, merchandising, prizes and
the event. You’re value is recognised and appreciated.
A special mention also goes out to all our existing loyal, and our new sponsors,
we are proud to have your trademark associated with our sport.
There are two more affiliate shows, a beginners clinic and the Judges seminar to
go prior to the nationals in October, we look forward to your seeing you at these
upcoming events.
etaries Report
The next show is the 25 th August 2012. The program and entry are now available
Secretary’s Report
Well another State Show Championship has come and gone.
My aching feet on the Sunday after were saying thank god for that!!
It is always a mammoth task to put such a show together, and requires
a great deal of teamwork to pull one off.
I have to say firstly a huge thank you to the committee members.
Firstly, Tony Mitchell, without you I think REO would have done my
head in, thank you so much for your support as fill in secretary, gofer
and an ear to bend.
Bec Laurie, sorry about all the moneybags we left for you, however your patience through the week was
fantastic. The clinic you guys put on at the start of the week went amazingly well (especially for the buckle
hall Guy and yourself took home). We do appreciate that your job didn’t finish at the show. It will carry on
for a few weeks after. We still can’t work out how Guy and yourself fit so much into your already busy lives.
Thanks a bunch Bec .Guy Laurie, well you now has secured yourself a place as the stand in chief arena
dragger from now on. What a great job you guys did on the gate and in the Arena. Rob Lawson, your efforts
in helping guide us as to how to put on a great show are well noted. Thank you again for being the chief
arena groomer and general go to man for the show. Adam little, without you I would not have secured a
proper meal over the length of the show, thank you, for keeping us well fed and looking after our sponsors
needs. Nicole Lynch, You always seem to know when you are needed. We really appreciate the CAN DO
attitude you have. We had you running all over the Windsor Area for us and it was never a problem. We kept
you busy running from the Arena to the winners area. We hope you enjoyed getting some great shots for
your portfolio too. Thanks again Nic. Jen Zylstra, what a trooper you are! It is never the same without you
and you were a welcome sight on Friday. You always give 100% even when you shouldn’t! We hope we
didn’t wear you out too much.
As you all know the show can’t run with just the committee, there was a huge amount of help received from
members and non-members alike. John and Lorraine Wylie, we really would be lost without you both. John
was on the gate for 2 days solid and Lorraine put on a spectacular feed for the clinic pupils. Dereck Reed,
who for 2 days sat in the judge’s chair scribing in the cold. Thank you for your time and it is great to see you
out amongst it again. Shaun Saunders and Hayley Backhouse, who turned their hand at the BBQ for the
competitors breakfast, Arena Grooming a well as scribing also. You guys are great sports and it was fun to
have you around at our show. Lee Erlin, Debbie Mitchell Davis and Shelley Peters, who also offered up their
time scribing. We certainly threw Lee in at the Deep end however you did a great job. We hope you guys
had fun also. Mike Erlin , picked up buckles for us and transported the Judges back to the airport for us.
Thanks Mike you really helped to take some pressure off us with those last minute tasks. Annie Woodhouse,
thank you for all the help you gave us, from helping with the Pancakes , helping in the office and all the
other odd jobs we had you doing. We hope we can return the favor at the Futurity show for you. Wayne
Davis, thank you for helping out in the canteen. Wayne spent nearly 14 hours in the canteen making sure we
were all feed. You certainly have not lost your touch on the BBQ. Cate Young, we really would have been
lost with out you. I had been having anxiety attacks about having to fill the canteen roster and at the last
minute we managed to secure you for 2 full days. I am sure, I am speaking on behalf of all the members, you
did a fantastic Job. We were all so well catered for. Your slow cooker meals were a massive hit and really hit
the mark on Saturday night. I didn’t get to try your curried sausages, so I hope we get another chance at
tasting those. Thank you so much. Also, a big thanks you to Wayne Carter, who ably helped Cate for the 2
days. You may hear from Wayne that it was his Curried sausages recipe. Thanks a bunch guys your
teamwork really paid off. Greg Anderson also turned his hand at the BBQ to cook up the competitor’s
dinner. Thanks for getting us organized and keeping us well fed on Thursday night. Robyn Ross , for those
of you who don’t know made all the tail bags you all won and or bought ( thank you Lorraine our #1
supporter) Robyn also mad the fantastic stall curtains for Whizpy and helped make the great salads in the
canteen. Matt Charles was a run around guy for us, chief stall cleaner and gofer. Thanks a bunch Matt.
Tamara Arnold who looked after the half price stallion services as well as the silent on Auction for Whizpy .
Thanks a bunch Tam. We raised a lot of money from them. If there is anyone I have missed I apologize . Our
heartfelt thanks goes out to all of you.
As for the actual horse show, what a Futurity. We had 17 horses in the futurity this year. That is only one
short from last years RA futurity. We saw some massive scores achieved here also. Warren Backhouse rode
Rocin on the Ranch to win with a massive score of 150.
Bec and Guy Laurie certainly held the flag for NSW. Wow what a buckle haul Bec had and Guy took home
some serious cash. Bec certainly blinged it up for the girls also with what I am sure was a different shirt for
every occasion.
We had a number of non pros enter the non pro derby and it was great to see some of our Rookie riders
really coming into their own in these types of classes.
We look forward to you al coming to compete under the NSWRHA banner at the futurity show. We have a
number of good riders and good horses in the club that could really shake things up in the teams challenge at
the futurity.
To our sponsors for the show this year we hope you felt looked after. We had a huge amount of sponsors
both prize and money sponsors this year. Without the generosity of you all we could not hold such a show. A
huge thank you needs to go to Daralyn Davies who is the owner of that great little Horse Whizpy Little Step.
Daralyn Donated a service fee to the club to help us raise funds and this was bought at silent auction at a
whopping $1700 by Shane Sainsbury. Thank you again.
We look forward to seeing you all at our next show in August.
Lisa Lawson
Thank you to Horeslands Fyshwick for sponsoring rugs at
Reining in the Alps and our Team Sorting weekend.
SHAUN SAUNDERS CLINIC REPORT
The cold weather of July didn’t stop 8 keen riders
joining the NSWRHA Shaun Saunders clinic at
Horseworld in Maralya (Sydney outer suburbs). The
enthusiastic riders along with a solid group of fence
sitters put in 2 long, educational and fun filled days.
The cold weather of July didn’t stop 8 keen riders
joining the NSWRHA Shaun Saunders clinic at
Horseworld in Maralya (Sydney outer suburbs). The
enthusiastic riders along with a solid group of fence
sitters put in 2 long, educational and fun filled days
Shaun started out by giving the riders his philosophy – if you get the fundamentals under control, everything
else is a lot easier! He went on to explain the importance of being able to move and control each of the
horse’s parts independently; its shoulders, hips and rib cage. The group then went to work after being given
a demonstration of some exercises to work on these things, and Shaun took time to work with each rider to
get the best from their horse.
Spins took up the afternoon and it was great to see the riders focussed on the horses using their shoulders
after the morning exercises. There was a mix of young and older horses at the clinic, which gave the
opportunity to see how it is important to tailor the work you do to the experience and capability of the horse.
Day 1 drew to a close with some tired horses and riders!
It would not be possible to talk about this clinic without mentioning the wonderful food! Lorraine Wiley put
in a HUGE effort to provide delicious morning and afternoon teas, wonderful lunches and an amazing dinner
on Saturday night. Everyone who attended the clinic was very grateful and in awe of the spread Lorraine was
able to put on.
Sunday started bright and early with riders being given a review quiz by Shaun. Guy Laurie was put on the
spot as the test example rider but he passed with flying colours! Riders then moved into circle work before
getting into fencing and stops in the afternoon. And were there some stops! Bec Laurie may be buying hock
boots after her session! Shaun then took some time in the chair to help riders utilise their pre-works time
more efficiently. Riders ran a pattern and Shaun helped them see the areas they needed to work on.
This was a great clinic and all the riders were extremely pleased with what was achieved in such a short
time. It was great to be able to see the difference in the horses after only 2 days. Even the mid-winter
temperatures down south did not dampen the rider’s spirits and put them in a great frame of mind for the
NSW State Show the following weekend!
