ERS offers new
services
Due to the increasing demand of submitting softcopies of
thesis/dissertation, the Electronic Resource Services (ERS)
introduced an additional service for the academic community to
convert thesis/dissertation from Microsoft Word format into Adobe
Portable Document Format (PDF) and transferring/burning them
into CDs, beginning January 2006.
The ERS formulated the following guidelines for the said
service:
- Conversion and transfer transactions shall be accommodated
on a first-come, first-served basis at the ERS counter.
- The students shall provide their own optical media (CD-R/RW)
and sticker labels.
- The students shall prepare or bring the final softcopy of the
draft (i.e. word document) of thesis/dissertation.
- Additional editing or modifications for the thesis/dissertation
shall be accomplished by the student.
- Students shall bring the signed approval sheet of thesis/
dissertation for scanning.
- Each optical media transfer/burn shall be charged Php 25.00
per CD.
- The printing of sticker labels for burned CD's shall be charged
Php 5.00 per page.
This service and transaction is solely for thesis/dissertation
conversion and transfer of academic and research value in nature.
Other purposes will not be encouraged or entertained.

To fulfill the instructional and
research activities of the academic
community, the AEA intends to
engage in an exchange of
publication to provide access to
necessary information resources to
fulfill the instructional and research
activities of the academic
community. This project was
started through a communication
sent by AEA Director Sonia
Gementiza to various universities/
colleges and other institutions.
The Aklatan will try to
enhance its collection, linkages and
services through gifts and exchange
activities. At present, those who
declared their willingness to support
include the University of Santo
Tomas, University of the Philippines,
University of Asia and the Pacific,
Philippine Normal University,
DLSU-Manila, and many others.
Thirty (30) journal titles are now
provided by the said institutions for
publication exchange.

EMS acquires new equipment
To meet the increasing demand of the academic
community, the Educational Media Services (EMS) acquired
new equipment which includes two Sony DVD players, one
Pioneer DVD recorder, one Sony handy cam, one Sony CD
player and radio cassette recorder, and one Canon Digital SLR,
September 8.
The library director and EMS personnel agreed that
as soon as that the functionality and features of the acquired
equipment were extensively explored, additional services to
the academic community will be offered such as optical media
duplication, and the conversion/transfer of photos/video
materials to DVD format.
Aklatan for Lakbay Maria
In cooperation with the Campus Ministry Office (CMO),
the Aklatang Emilio Aguinaldo participated in the Lakbay Maria
2006 themed "Maria: Kaagapay Tungo Kay Kristo", September
11.
The library served as the first station for the "Dalaw
Maria" event, in behalf of the EVP's Office and Cavite Studies
Center. A living rosary was also done at the University Chapel.
Library Director facilitates
seminar on annotation
Library Director Sonia Gementiza facilitated a seminar
on "How to Annotate Books and Other Library Materials" to
the AEA's personnel at the Archives Section, September 27.
The seminar aimed to conduct a series of hands-on
training to equip and develop the skills of library personnel in
terms of using the MARC21 (Machine Readable Cataloging)
format in encoding data, indexing, and abstracting of library
materials.

Faculty and staff in action
In celebration of the Nationalism Month and
Development Studies Week, Filipiniana librarian Mary
Ann Jimenez was one of the judges in the Innov-Art
Exhibit at the Ipil kubo of DLSU-D, September 4-8.
The event was sponsored by the Development
Studies Program Council.

library exhibit committee coordinator Mary Ann Jimenez
assisted the Cavite Studies Center (CSC) in mounting
their exhibit at Ateneo de Manila University, September
5.

Filipiniana Librarian Mary Ann Jimenez served
as resource speaker in the seminar “Starting a Library”
at the Dasmariñas Public Library, September 6.
The seminar aimed to teach students on the
value of books in one’s life and the love for reading.
She also discussed the techniques on how to start a
self-owned mini-library and methods in effective
bookkeeping.
The activity was sponsored and facilitated by
the Friends of the Library (FL).

“Religious Institutions in Cavite: A Historical Perspective”
at the Salakot Hall of Philippine Christian University
(PCU) – Dasmariñas, September 22.
The seminar focused on the history of several
religious institutions in the province. It was sponsored by
the DLSU-D Cavite Studies Center, PCU-Dasmariñas,
Cavite Historical Society, National Historical Institute, and
Amadeo Historical Society.

Library staff finishes MIT
AEA library assistant and former Electronic
Resource Services (ERS) Unit Head Almar Red fulfilled
the final requirement for the degree of Master of
Information Technology (MIT) of the Technological
University of the Philippines (TUP)-Manila, when he
passed the final oral defense of his thesis entitled,
"Development of E.A.S.C.A.: An Electronic Archives
and Special Collection Application", at the Agapito
Conchu Conference Room, September 27.

In celebration of the Pambansang Buwan ng
Nasyonalismo, an exhibit entitled "NASYONALISMO: Sa
Isip, sa Salita, at sa Gawa… Posible!" was placed at the
AEA Gallery, September 4-15.
The exhibit aims to instill patriotism and
nationalism to students and other library users. It
highlights student artworks depicting the theme of the
celebration, Jose P. Rizal and other Filipino Nationalists,
and thoughts on Nationalism.
The event was sponsored by the College of Liberal
Arts (CLA), Social Sciences Department (History Section,
Philosophy Section, and Political Science Program Council),
and the AEA.

In celebration of the National Tourism Week
themed "Tourism Enriches", an exhibit was mounted to
enhance the appreciation for the culture, heritage and the
arts of the province of Cavite at the AEA Gallery, September
19-30.
It showcased Cavite's major tourism destinations
such as resorts, mountains, parks, museums, restaurants,
and many others.
The exhibit was made possible by the College of
International Hospitality and Management, Tourism
Management Department, Tourismo Lasalleño, and the
Aklatan.

The University Student Council, in coordination
with the Aklatan, placed an exhibit entitled "Sanlahi:
Pagkakaisa sa Sining at Kultura" at the old library building
lobby, September 11-15.
Its objective is to enhance cultural awareness of
the students and develop appreciation for the arts,

As part of the environmental disasters series, this work is a very detailed, clearly written
and interesting account of the Mount St. Helen's eruptions. Like other books in the said series, it
analyzes the role of people, both in contributing to and recovering from disaster. The book also
explains how and why volcanoes form and erupt around the world. It presents the story of the
deadliest volcanic eruption ever to occur in the United States as well as its immediate and long-term
effects on both people and nature.
This book covers the incidents that happened before, during and after the eruption. The
information about the said eruption also included observations from 1980 to 2004. The author did a
very good start by acquainting the readers about volcanoes in general. What is very significant about
this material is the fact that it presents the positive and negative effects of eruption. It even features
new life after the eruption, which informs readers that volcanic eruptions do not only create loss or
danger.
