March is Mental Health Month!
Director of Legacy’s Behavioral Health department, “Legacy provides comprehensive services and access
to top notch medical care.”
According to Dr. Valdivieso, “There is a huge need in our community for mental health services
not just for those who are uninsured, but also for those with insurance - including Medicaid
and Medicare - and across all age groups. We have a strong department with people who care
about the work that we do, and they care about helping others to lead healthy lives.”
Legacy boasts a Behavioral Health team of 8 therapists and 7 psychiatrists who served over
3,000 adults and children last year. Patients are referred to Legacy from places like Houston’s
LBJ Hospital, as well as from primary care physicians. Many of the pediatric patients seen at
Legacy present with diagnoses on the Autism Spectrum. These children have been previously
under-diagnosed or misdiagnosed. There are 40 to 60 children at any given time on the
waiting list to receive psycho-educational testing to confirm an autism spectrum disorder.
Some of the families in Legacy’s service area are burdened by low socio-economic status, lack
of health insurance, and literacy issues that hinder them from accessing the critical behavioral
healthcare services to obtain the early diagnosis and specialized treatment so crucial to improving
outcomes for the autistic child.
Spring 2013
The early 90s were a scary time for Cassandra. She had no health insurance,
and so she relied on the City of Houston to help her find healthcare. Cassandra was
diagnosed as HIV positive in 1991, and with that came uncertainty, anxiety, and no
small amount of fear.
“My case manager tried to help, but nothing felt right to me,” Cassandra says. “Too
many of the clinics I went to were depressing and uncomfortable. All of the patients
looked sad and hopeless. It got so bad that I refused to go back.”
Finally, in 1992, Cassandra was referred to Legacy Community Health Services
(then known as The Montrose Clinic). There she found the open, welcoming, and nonjudgmental
environment she had always wanted.
“The staff greeted me with handshakes and hugs,” says Cassandra. “People at other clinics were afraid to touch HIV positive patients, but
I didn’t find any of that at Legacy. Everyone was easy to talk to, and they really put my needs first. They connected me with other services, like
outside support groups, that helped me get through some really tough times.”
Legacy’s Eligibility department started the process by setting Cassandra up to receive low cost services, and got her on the right track for
her medications. Maintaining a consistent medication schedule is critical to HIV patients, and Legacy’s partnership with Walgreens means that
Cassandra has a quick and easy way to stay as healthy as possible.
“I’ve made Legacy my home,” Cassandra tells us. “I’ve brought my son, daughter, and grandson into the Legacy family with me. I’m a
recovering addict, and the doctors and support staff kept me afloat, encouraged me not to give up, and have stayed positive throughout my time
here. I can honestly say that Legacy has saved my life in more ways than one.”
Continuity of care is a hallmark of effective primary healthcare because it helps doctors gain insight into their patient’s lives and helps staff
work as more effective patient advocates. Cassandra gives Legacy high marks in this increasingly important category. She knows the doctors
here, many of whom have been with Legacy 20 years or more, and that makes a big difference in her life. Cassandra passes by other low-cost
clinics on her bus ride to Legacy Montrose Campus simply because the medical providers here know her.
“Any time I talk to someone who doesn’t have health insurance, I tell them about Legacy,” says Cassandra. “I tell them about my life before
Legacy, when I couldn’t get the care and medication I badly needed. Then I tell them about my life after Legacy, and how I’ve been able to watch
my grandson grow up thanks to the doctors there. The last thing I tell them is something I’ve said more times than I can remember: The City
of Houston would be lost without Legacy.”
Dr. Jeanette Valdivieso, Medical Director of Behavioral Health,
participates in play-therapy with one of Legacy’s pediatric patients.
Legacy Her Home
Spotlight on Service-Line:
Behavioral Health
In an effort to ‘build healthy communities,’ Legacy offers Behavioral
Health Services facilitated by providers who strive to improve the overall
well-being of each patient they see. Legacy’s behavioral health team helps
relieve symptoms associated with mental disorders through a combination
of assessment, diagnosis and treatment and follow-up, helping patients feel
good about themselves so they can better cope with
challenges of their everyday life. In the
words of Dr. Jeanette Valdivieso, the
From five Houston locations, two
Beaumont campuses, and one Baytown
clinic, Legacy Community Health Services
(Legacy) addresses the healthcare needs of the
uninsured and underinsured across southeast
Texas. Though Legacy has seen great, exciting
change recently, our goal remains the same: to
provide high-quality, compassionate healthcare to
all members of the community in a non-judgmental,
culturally-sensitive manner. And, thanks to our status
as a Federally Qualified Health Center, Legacy is perfectly
positioned to do just that, often at low or no cost.
Approximately 20 percent of all Houstonians live below the poverty line and therefore
do not have access to the healthcare they need. We strive to provide preventative and
primary healthcare to all who need it through affordable health, social, educational, and prevention services. In our most recent
fiscal year, Legacy treated nearly 45,000 patients through 145,041 office visits. In many cases, these patients would have nowhere
else to turn if Legacy did not provide them with essential health services.
Legacy’s roots were planted in Houston/Harris County’s HIV/STD community more than 30 years ago when, as the Montrose
Clinic, we began providing testing and support services to people living with AIDS. Legacy began providing comprehensive HIV/
AIDS primary healthcare services in 1988, and has since become a nationally recognized leader in HIV/AIDS prevention and
treatment. Approximately 25 percent of HIV positive Americans are uninsured—a higher rate than the general public, of whom
about 18.5 percent don’t have insurance—and Legacy serves as the healthcare home for many of these disadvantaged individuals.
From Next Step—our educational program designed for newly diagnosed patients facing a scary and confusing time—to our
primary care and medication services, Legacy offers the full spectrum of care that today’s HIV positive patient requires.
This edition of Legacy’s newsletter will update you on new developments at Legacy, and provide you with a glimpse of some
of the great work being done by our healthcare providers and support staff. This is but a peek behind the scenes, though, a small
glance into what makes Legacy tick on a daily basis. I encourage you to contact giving@legacycommunityhealth.org to learn more
about how Legacy is making a healthy, long-lasting difference in the lives of underprivileged Texans.
Developing Health One Community at a Time
GE constantly works to make the world a
healthierplacebysupplyinghealthcare
technology that saves lives every day.
While one focus they have is to give
healthcare professionals the tools
they need to make better diagnoses
earlier and more accurately, the GE
Foundation also supports efforts to
help improve patients’ lives through the
Developing Health initiative.
Legacy has had the fortune of being the beneficiary of The
GE Foundation’s support for the past two years and has just been
awarded support through 2014. GE’s total commitment to
Legacy totals $850,000 in direct support of the under insured and
uninsured communities served by Legacy.
At Legacy Montrose, the GE Foundation supports the Next
Step program which is designed to provide those newly diagnosed
with HIV the information they need to stay healthy. It also provides
each participant with an individual session on understanding their
lab work and any medications that they are prescribed. This
program serves hundreds of patients every year.
“When a person learns that they are HIV positive, their whole
life changes in an instant. Next Step is a multi-faceted program,
From the Board Chair
bringing a client compassion, education, guidance and hope where there was once despair. As quoted from a client’s comments, ‘You gave me the
gift of making myself whole again,’” said Barbara Walker, Client Care Coordinator and long-time Next Step instructor.
Legacy’s goal is to promote not only education, but provide resources and strengthen families through a wide range of services offered at our
clinics. At Legacy Southwest, the GE Foundation supports Family Life, which is a compilation of trainings and classes that help Legacy’s immigrant
patient population become more familiar with the skills necessary to help their families. Family Life includes nutrition and cooking classes that
provide ideas for making healthier food choices and preparing healthier foods for their families, Diabetes education, English as a second language,
computer skills, Healthy Moms-Healthy Baby classes, prenatal health classes, and car seat safety training.
Mint Julep 2013 - July 20, 2013 - at Rich’s,
Doors open at 2pm Show starts 3pm
Eleven years ago two employees had a casual conversation about
raising money for Legacy’s HIV/AIDS services. Start with some
sequins, add big eye lashes, a spotlight and a stage, and it is now
a legendary LGBT event in Houston. The show features some
of the top performers from the LGBT community and recognizes
LGBT leaders with the honorary title of Miss, Ms. & Mr. Mint
Julep before a crowd of over 300 people. Proceeds go to
Legacy’s comprehensive HIV education and support services
and specialized programs.
