The history of fire 

In the history of the human race the fire has played an important role as an origin of light and warmth. 

The evolution was influenced by the fire as well as the development of science and technique. 

Due to fire caused by nature related events such as volcano eruptions or lightning activities, humans realized the 

meaning of flames (fire) and they learned to care and save it. The competence to handle the fire and use it reasonably 

let the importance of fire grow in the daily life. Survival often relied on the skill to make fire and save it. 

In the primeval times fire gave heat and protection against wild animals. An additional step of development was 

made in preparing food, because it became more digestible and longer durable. Sparks were created with a flint 

stone in order to ignite tinder. This is the oldest way of fire ignition. 

In the Stone Age humans ignited fire by hitting two stones or rubbing two boughs together. Now humans were 

able to ignite fire whenever and wherever they needed it. During the time the use of fire opened humans more 

and more possibilities. Not only in domestic daily life or for protection but fire became important in magical and 

symbolical rituals as well. 

Today fire is part of our culture and it's incredible when not impossible to live without. As before fire is used for 

cooking and heating. The light of a burning candle is used to light up a room not only in the case of festivities. 

The symbolism of fire at Easter or other pre-Christian traditions is conveyed into the present time. 

The development of the match 

The development of the match at the end of the 17th century, the first "ignition medium" was an incredible break 

through. The English physicist Robert Boyle covered a small piece of paper with phosphor and a small piece of 

wood with sulphur. 

From 1785 the precursor of the matches became known when phosphor was filled in small bottles in which a stick 

was dipped that ignited on contact with oxygen. The French Jean Louis Chancel invented 1805 the first matches, 

which were coated by a mix of potassiumclorate, sulphur, sugar and gum arabicum. The ignition occured by dipping 

the sticks into sulphuric acid, which was filled in small bins. This invention was named "Dip lighter". 

John Walker, English chemist and apothecary from Stockton-on-Tees, invented the first friction matches 1827, 

before 1830 the French chemist Charles Sauria created matches with white phosphor.

The invention of the craftsman Jacob Friedrich Kammerer from Ludwigsburg was to mix wood splints with yellow 

phosphor, sulphur, potassium chlorate and gum arabicum and this was much safer and less hazardous than all 

matches of earlier invention. 

Later the production of matches with white phosphor were extremely dangerous and unhealthy. Since May 1884 

according to the law of the state of Germany the use of white phosphor was only allowed under strict restrictions 

due to its toxication. In the middle of the 19th century Rudolf Christian Böttger obtained the possibility to replace 

the white phosphor with a less harzadous red phosphor. 

The Swedish chemist Gustav Erik Pasch invented at the same time safety matches, which became popular as 

Sweden Matches and which became a symbol for quality. 

The match empire of the “Match King” Kreuger, Svenska Tändsticks AB (STAB), became international popular 

under the name of Swedish Match Company. Kreuger established varied holdings which built a monopoly in the 

international match market till 1931 with approx. 150 companies in 33 countries. 

60% of the world production for matches was controlled by Kreuger. 

The match and the advertising 

Due to the match monopoly law only the “Zündwaren-Monopolgesellschaft” (combustable goods 

monopoly) were authorized to distribute matches in the state of Germany. The brands were 

Welthölzer and Haushaltsware in unified design. 

During the years match boxes were not only used for packaging and transportation of matches. The 

importance to use the boxes as a carrier of advertisement was quickly realized. Various trades and 

industrial companies started early to place their advertising messages on the small veneer boxes. 

Companies realized the option to show their advertisement to a wide range of attendance with low 

cost by printed labels.

Only after the years of match monopoly, a huge assortment of advertising match products conquered Germany 

and many other countries. Beginning with simple one colour printed labels to a mini poster, with time the history 

of advertising through matches showed an impressive option how to address customers. 

150 years of match production in Szeged 

Coming from the historical archives, match production officially started in Szeged, when József Neubauer received 

the permission of founding a match factory on the 11 th of September 1858. He was at that time 32 years old 

and full of ambitions. The first facility was up and running only a couple of hundred meters from todays location 

close to the Pick salami factory on the river bank. 

Neubauer handed over his factory to József Bereuer at the end of 1870. Interesting data from that time: the 

manning was 6 men, 12 women, and 10 children. 

Some years later in 1877 Miksa Breier took over and the factory was moved to its existing place. 1913 the 

Szegedi Gyújtógyár Rt. was founded. After this time the factory became member of the SOLO company, 

but with the name SZIKRA Gyújtógyárak Rt. 

In 1928 a special exclusive contract was made with the Swedish STAB (SVENSKA TANDSTICKS AKTEBOLAGET) 

company which bought the factories from SOLO, so that no other company were allowed permission for match 

production for 50 years in Hungary. 

In World war II the factory was of course running as a military company. The Swedish ownership ended 1946 and 

the factory became a national enterprise. 

In 1975 two new automatic lines were moved to Szeged and all boxes were produced of paperboard instead of 

wood-veneer. This created a boom in productivity, and the output was increasing year by year reaching 400 million 

boxes in 1991 with 320 employees. 

In 1993 the 2 existing match factories ( Szeged and Budafok) altered into the company 

form of KFT (LTD). In the same year on the 4th of May 1993 Swedish Match 

bought the companies via privatisation. The production of advertising matches 

moved to Szeged. 

Because of the reorientation in business Swedish Match decided in 

2005 to finish the business with advertising matches and to close 

the factory in Szeged together with the sales offices in many 

European countries. 

Four former managers took over the complete business of advertising 

matches and founded Europe Match GmbH. The key for this decision 

was the moving of expensive skillet printing from Sweden to Hungary. 

After finding the right print shops and moving the uv lacquering 

machine from Sweden to Hungary the new age began in Szeged 

when Europe Match GmbH started production on 1 st April 2006.

Since that time production output increased continuously. We invested in latest CAD systems, a plotter and high 

tech production lines with focus on creativity and technical progress in order to realise the requests and ideas of 

our customers. 

We are running permanent research projects with the universities of Budapest and Sopron in order to improve 

the components of match heads and striking surfaces. As well we're looking for improvements of gluing and other 

chemical processes. We search for possibilities to change to local raw materials and we're looking for alternatives 

to wood purchase for book matches. 

Due to these activities we save the long term requirements for local resources of the production. 

Our contribution for a clean environment 

In order to keep the lakes and rivers clean we produce outer boxes and book matches from chlorine-free bleached 

card board and the inner boxes from recycling card board – all materials are biologically degradable. 

The wood for the matches are made from poplar and aspen trees. We exclusively buy the wood from the wood 

industry with the obligation of reforestation and sensible use of wet areas. Our match heads are free from sulphur, 

potassium chlorate and zinc oxide. By using environment friendly raw material we protect our planet Earth. 

The lighter – the other flame 

The origin of the lighter is based on the invention of the gun. In 1515 a flint wheel ignited a spark in the importance 

of the word, but only 100 years later it was crafts manly developed to an ignition pistol. In the beginning of 

the 19th century the German chemist Johann Friedrich Dobereiner invented the construction of a table lighter 

which mutated due to the gas content to a “hell machine”. 

Only 50 years later because of the demand the development was promoted. Whole generations of the lighters 

which are known today followed the creation of a fire spender with reliable properties: handy, practical and goodlooking 

were the requirements. 

Cricket presented the first disposable lighter to the markets in 1961 and is guiding by innovations. 

With a self distinguishing nylon body, the fixed flame system and a child resistant system various 

models convinced by reliability and quality for decades.

Special shapes and executions 

Extra ordinary marketing and promotion ideas can 

be realized with advertising matches. 

In our product design department the idea will be 

converted into a technical drawing by using CAD 

technology. Afterwards, in combination with a 3D 

animation, the drawing is presented to the customer 

for approval. 

The idea finally becomes a realistic shape by transferring 

the technical drawing, via a plotter, onto 

original material and make of a 1:1 sample. 

We are able to produce not only individual shapes in 

book matches but complete new designs of boxes and 

packages. 

In combination with adaptable head colours or coloured 

sticks we expand the variety of executions. 

With a classy smell printing, a rubber field print, 

a numbering or equipped with a voucher coupon 

multiple options are given to place the advert message 

effectively. 

The add-on of a mini brochure or folded flyer carries 

extensive messages securely to the target. 

A team of experienced specialists with hi-tech equipment 

is waiting for the challenges and wishes of our 

customers – in order to create something very special 

with advertising matches.
