Curtis Burge in Alaska

Designing our sea kayaks is a balancing act. The shapes of our
hulls balance speed against manoeuvrability. The weight and
construction balance performance against durability. The
cockpits balances comfort against responsiveness.
But that’s not all. We also balance our decades of experience and
skills against new techniques and technologies.
We’re constantly looking at new materials and new processes.
Were using the latest computer aided design thinking alongside
traditional woodstrip plug construction to get the best from both
Worlds. We test our designs with some of the leading paddlers
in the World too and we are offering more custom options so you
can get the kayak you want. This is all brought to you through
an ever expanding network of knowledgeable dealers who can
guide you.
We're not just looking to the future, though.
We often go back to basics to make things better, take our new
skeg system for instance, we made it simple and effective with no
worry’s about any wire kinking or other foul ups. It just works!
Many also say our hand laminating process is second to none.
That our dealers give the best advice and service. And with more
than thirty years of manufacturing and selling British style sea
kayaks you can see why, we've all got the experience to back up
the technology. We've been involved with lots of sea kayaking's
most pioneering expeditions: P&H boats were used on the 1980
Prince William Sound trip and on the first rounding of Cape
Horn in 1992. While in 2007 the British Royal Navy have chosen
P&H sea kayaks to take aboard HMS Endurance down in to the
Arctic Ocean for a major expedition.
Many of the world's premiere paddlers and leading instructors
will be using our sea kayaks day in day out. Ensuring we have a
huge stock of knowledge to draw on for every new design or
improvement and this is balanced with the input from our dealers
who know what our customers want too. So just because it's
traditional British style doesn't mean it won't travel.
P&H Custom sea kayaks: a careful balancing act of
technology, tradition and improvement.

Why buy a composite sea kayak?
You will only really know why once you own one! Composite
kayaks are high performance, quality craft, custom built just for
you. Once you have used one its going to be hard to settle for
anything less. Part of the attraction of owning a composite kayak
is that you enter a select world of people who want the very best
and are happy to spend that little more time looking after it,
keeping it at its best and who will forever enjoy the superb feeling
of gliding effortlessly through the water. The efficient grace,
smooth lines, beautiful handling and amazing looks of a well built
composite sea kayak really are something to behold.
There are practical reasons too, like being lighter and more rigid.
This gives better efficiency through the water and the ability to
customise your kayak with the many different specification options
and colour choices of your deck, hull and trim.
The satisfaction you will get out of a composite kayak is not in a
graph or table nor is it valued in monetary terms either, it will be
in your own satisfaction of owning something very special that
you will enjoy on your adventures long or short, serious and
committing, or perhaps more relaxing and peaceful for many years.
If this sounds like it is what you want, whatever your current
paddling experience, you are in good hands, with P&H Sea kayaks.
We have specialised in the manufacture of composite sea kayaks
for over 30 years. What sets us apart from the rest is not just our
designs but our impressive standard constructions.
What about polyethylene sea kayaks?
If your looking for a more durable craft that needs little or no
maintenance and one that can take the rough and tumble of surf
and beach landings with ease then perhaps you should look at our
rotomoulded (RM) sea kayaks. They give great value and so are
ideal for those looking for their first ‘real’ sea kayak and with our
industry leading triple layer construction that incorporates a tight
foam core with a durable and tough inner and outer skin the extra
weight penalty that is normally associated with polyethylene
kayaks is reduced to the minimum. It gives increased safety too as
its greater specific gravity increases its inherent buoyancy making
the kayak float higher when full of water this assists you with
paddle float and other self rescue techniques.
EXPEDITION CAPABLE
THE PORTFOLIO
Does what it says on the tin! Suitable for all waters including more open water and exposed ocean crossings. However don't let this term fool you,
owning one of these designs doesn't mean that each trip has to be weeks in the wilderness or out in rough seas. Although if you have the skills and
you’re wishing to be more adventurous, these are certainly the kayaks up to the task! Your just as at home with a paddle across the bay or lake.
04 | Expedition Capable
Cetus The boat for getting out there and getting away from it all. The Cetus is a fast Quest When you shut your eyes at night, what do you dream of ?
If it’s sea, sky and horizon, let us introduce the Quest.
choice for paddlers looking for a stable expedition platform or a fast, easy to paddle
Refined and redesigned over the years, it’s perfect for long days on the water and
relaxed nights on the beach. On long trips the Quest's stable, efficient and great for
However it's not just a boat for long trips, though, it’s equally capable as a fast day
carrying loads. So however choppy it gets, whatever the distance you’re paddling
cruiser. The Cetus sees a resurrection of a concept we were playing around with
and however long you’re staying there, the Quest’s got you covered.
ten years ago: the fourth hatch, in easy reach in front of your cockpit. It's proving
And if you don't have the time for a multi-day odyssey? It's equally well suited to
more and more popular with paddlers who want somewhere quick and easy to
reach to stow a camera or day gear when things are getting a bit rougher.
day-trips, especially with this year’s stable seating system.
especially for the smaller paddler or those looking for a more playful kayak to take
it fits neatly and it’s also been a surprise hit with bigger paddlers who want a more
out in to tidal races and the surf. The LV should again be the natural choice for
lively boat for everything, from playboating and instructing to multi-day
paddlers looking for a very stable expedition platform or just a fast, easy to paddle
boat for longer distance paddles. As a playboat the LV excels and is great fun in
These designs are true versatile craft of the sea. Delicately balanced to give you some of the best ‘all round’ sea kayak’s on the market today.
Coastal exploration? Day trips? Load lugging? Multi-day wilderness paddling? Tidal races and overfalls? Or would you prefer not to have to choose?
Capella
With a Capella, you don’t. Whether it’s loaded or empty, the shallow V-hull is
reassuringly stable. Whether you’re taking photographs, instructing or just
getting to grips with a thoroughbred sea kayak, there’s no reason to make things
more difficult.
And we’ve got one that’ll fit you perfectly. You wouldn’t choose the same sized
bike as everyone else, so why should a kayak be different? We make four different
sizes, so we can guarantee you’ll fit. With the right boat, you won’t feel swamped
by the high deck but you’ll have room to stretch your legs.
If you want one boat for everything, you’ve just found it.
The Spirit of the classic designs can be traced back to some of modern sea kayaking's most famous and successful designs from the early 1970's.
Designed with the finest attributes of these early iconic kayaks like the P&H Baidarka in mind all built in harmony with modern materials,
technology and P&H quality the classic Greenland lines defiantly stand out from the crowd. Fine tuned, performance hull’s reward the more
experienced and decisive paddler.
Vela A boat this short can't be a proper sea kayak, can it? In a word, yes.
Sirius Think low. Low profile, low windage, low deck.
The Vela's a big surprise in a small package. Short, yes, but we've worked our
If you’ve got the experience the Sirius is a lively ride that'll tackle anything you
magic and developed a fast, manoeuvrable hull. You won’t find another boat this
will. The low deck and fine tips mean less buffeting and blowing around in the
responsive that can still keep up with the pack.
wind. You can stay on course while big-deck boats are busy correcting. The hull’s
Hard chines and a v-hull give a precise, manoeuvrable feel. If you’re exploring
as low resistance as the deck: sleek styling, a narrow beam and a good waterline
caves and crannies, zipping about between group members or testing yourself on
help you eat up the miles.
overfalls and tidal races, it’ll handle nimbly and predictably. You can put yourself
The Sirius is just as good for playboating in tidal races or rockhopping around the
exactly where you need to be.
coast. The v-shaped hull means it’s easy to edge but still has plenty of secondary
If you’re covering open water on a day or weekend trip, you’ll also appreciate the
stability. While experts love the responsive handling, aggressive intermediates pick
long waterline length and efficient hull shape.
And when you come to the end of your trip the Vela’s short enough to load onto
up the skills quickly. The Sirius is the original high performance low-rider.
your roof rack or store in your garage without any drama.
Bahiya
Do you want to stay the distance?
If you can’t stand sitting still, the Bahiya will keep up with you. Long and sleek, its
classic lines hold a course and eat up the miles efficiently. Just look at the deck. The
sleek and subtle lines aren’t just for show - they cut down your wind resistance
when the breeze stiffens.
If you lay the Bahiya on edge, you'll get a lively and responsive performance, ideal
for playboating on tidal races and overfalls. And if you want to stay out for the
weekend (or longer), we’ve done the sums so it paddles just as well loaded as empty.
If you’re just getting into the sport, the Bahiya’s probably not for you unless you
fancy a challenge. But if you want a boat that won’t hold you back, a boat to face all
the challenges the sea can throw at you? You’ve found it.
Standard
Fittings
Fittings
Glassfibre-Diolen
The hull is Glassfibre and Diolen to balance weight, stiffness and durability.
(Diolen is used because it provides superb protection against hard impacts
penetrating the hull.) The deck is also glassfibre and has foam mat reinforcement
round the cockpit area (for deep water rescues) and the footrest mounting for
added strength.
Toggles [1]
We build in toggles so it’s easy to hold on to our boats if you’re in the water. (To
carry a sea kayak, it’s a better idea to use a trolley or to lift it from underneath)
Deck Lines & Elastics [2]
We attach pre stretched lines round the decks of our kayaks to act as security
lines to tie gear on to and to allow others to hold on to your kayak. We also
attach elastic lines to our boats’ decks so you can stow things under them like
split paddles, spare kit or paddle floats. All the lines are attached by recessed
deck fittings (RDFs) that are moulded in to keep the boat watertight.
NEW Retractable Skeg ‘Sometimes simple is better’ [3]
All new 2007 composite models Cetus, Cetus LV and Capella 167 will come with
our NEW retractable skeg system as standard. Easy to operate, lightweight and
simple to maintain this new skeg is yet another great improvement. With a
‘click’ slider right next to the cockpit it’s simple to make small adjustments as
conditions change. No more kinked cables or jammed skegs!
(we will be introducing it in to the rest of the range including the RM models
as we work through the changes required. These current boats will continue
with the wire skeg system. Check the web site for the latest info).
Bulkheads & Footrests [4]
Bulkheads separate your cockpit from the load compartments. We either glass
them in as we make the kayak or structurally bonded them depending on
whether it’s a composite or a plastic boat. We pressure test every single boat we
make to make sure that the compartments are sealed properly. Glass bulkheads
also have a rubber pressure release grommet in them. All our boats are also
fitted as standard with our own fully adjustable ‘twist-loc’ sliding footrests.
Deck hatches [5]
Deck hatches mean you can access your storage compartments easily. They’re
made from supple, UV stable rubber for a great seal and years of service. On our
composite kayaks we use a lighter ‘click-on’ hatch cover for the day hatch too.
While Kevlar-carbon constructions get ‘click-on’ hatches allround.
Thighgrips
Our composite boats have lightweight, padded thighgrips moulded into the cockpit
Polyethylene (RM)
P&H’s impressive triple layer material which comprises a foam core with tough
outer and inner skins is used in all our RM kayaks. The secret is in the foam
core, too light and it will flex, to small will make it heavy. P&H has developed
just the right mix over the years and our RM boats are some of the stiffest and
lightest out there. It gives some key advantages over the more common single
layer type constructions found in polyethylene kayaks.
rim while our RM plastic boats have fully adjustable injection-moulded thighgrips.
(newer composite designs will also have theses incorporated as we design them.)
Seat [6]
Our standard seat is made from moulded HDPE material that is lightweight and
durable. It is fully padded for longer trips while back support is provided by a
mid height beckrest that is fully adjustable. The seat also has handy gear loops
for attaching ‘stuff ’ too.
By the very nature of ‘Custom’ there is no definitive list of things we do, however here are most of the more popular custom options people
Custom
Constructions
Custom Fitted
Options
Options
Kevlar-carbon
Lighter and stiffer, this construction adds Kevlar strength and carbon fibre
stiffness to the hull. The top deck’s made with Kevlar and glass and the whole
package tends to weigh in a few kilos lighter than a standard glass-Diolen boat.
Lightweight Kevlar-carbon
The ultimate construction. Lightweight Kevlar-carbon construction uses more
Kevlar-carbon and less glass fibre in the hull, shaving weight and boosting stiffness.
Lightweight Kevlar-carbon clear hull [1]
Again a Lightweight Kevlar-carbon construction but this time with a clear hull
which lets you see the pattern of the Kevlar-carbon construction in the hull and
also shaves off a kilogram (2.2lbs) of pigment too. Lighter and looks fantastic! (shown)
Note: We also use all click-on hatches on the Kevlar-carbon constructions to
save around an additional 3kgs (6.6lbs)
Custom Graphics [2]
Do you want to stand out from the crowd? We can even finish you’re P&H
custom sea kayak with colour blends, glitter or bespoke designs depending on
its complexity.
Custom Bulkhead Position [3]
You can choose how far away you want your front bulkhead. It means you can
use it as your footrest and do away with footrests altogether leaving the hull of
the kayak much cleaner on the outside. Gives more storage space in the front
hatch, less swamping room in the cockpit and can give a more comfortable
paddling position.
Silva 70P Compass* [4]
The 70P is the benchmark flush mounted sea kayak compass with an absolute
accurate and steady card in all conditions and high heeling angles.
Compac 50 Pump* [5]
A sealed unit pump for serious paddling. A few pumps of the front-deck
mounted handle will empty the boat by moving up to 49 litres ( 13Gal) a minute.
It’s also very easy to strip down for maintenance.
1
4
6
Foot Pump [6]
A hands-free solution so you can keep your grip on your paddles while you’re
emptying your boat, great in rougher self rescue situations.
Note: We can only fit the foot pump to a custom bulkhead as you obviously need
to be able to reach it with your feet.
Composite Seats and Cockpit Rims [1]
Although most paddlers choose our fully adjustable standard seats, we can also fit
composite seats in either fibreglass or carbon. Although the weight saving is
minimal a composite seat feels stiffer and more solid and some people like this
powerful racing position and feel. We can also craft a carbon cockpit rim if you’re
looking for something special to set your boat apart from others too!
Outside Seam [2]
Ideal for heavy use and instructing, external seams replace our standard gel-coat
strip with a glass or Kevlar seam for more abrasion resistance and an even stronger
join again if you want the very best we can do a carbon seam strip too!
Keel Strip [3]
Beach launches and landings all take their toll on a composite boat. A durable keel
strip minimises wear on your gel coat and keeps your boat in better condition for
longer. We can use either fibreglass or Kevlar and we can gel coat it with any colour
you like.
Rudders*
Rudders are a real personal choice, some swear by them some don’t! They can be a
real asset when you manoeuvring in tight spots when you’re exploring tight nooks
and crannies and also some prefer them with fully loaded expedition boats too.
However they are generally not regarded as efficient as a skeg’s in rougher
conditions. We offer two rudder options they both extend well below the hull when
you are in deep water, and when you come ashore; you can get the blade out of the
way so it won’t get hung up on the bottom.
Easy Rudder: This low profile design that has the blade stowed vertically creates
much less wind resistance via the smaller blade area it is able to use while its strong
lightweight construction less than 500g (1.1lb) with few moving parts keeps the unit
nice and simple. The one cord retraction system gives it its name Easy! [4]
Navigator Rudder: The Navigator Rudder System forms a complete departure from
standard over-the-stern types where the blade pivots 270° or 180° from its vertical
deployed position to a horizontal or vertical retracted position on the deck. The
Navigator goes from vertical to horizontal the shortest way, by pivoting only 90°.
When you pull on the retracting line, the blade slides within a pivoting sleeve and
comes head-first onto the stern, very simple and efficient. [5]
Both the rudder options can be uses with our standard sliding TwistLoc or pivot
(think gas pedal) footrests and can be supplied with high strength pre-stretched line
(which is lighter and easier to maintain) or wire control lines.
* - can also be specified on RM plastic kayaks
Obviously if you looking for something different we are always happy to talk to you and see if what you’re asking for is possible!
