THE 1985 VINTAGE
January began with intense frosts and was -13 degrees F for two
weeks and, as a result, some vines were completely destroyed.
February and March were humid and cold with again some parcels
destroyed from frost. From March to May there was a lot of rain
and temperatures remained cold. From the beginning of July until
mid-October it was very sunny with long periods of heat and some
storms. Flowering began on the 15th of June, but was partially
affected by outbreaks of Coulure, and harvest began on the 30th of
September. The production was an average of 7,570 kg per hectare-
a normal yield for the Chardonnay and a very small yield for the
Pinot Noir(4,000 kg per hectare)The Alcoholic content was 9.5 to 11
degrees and acidity was 7.5 to 9 grams per liter.
30 different growths. Pinot Noir 48%, Pinot Meunier 22%,
Chardonnay 30%. When I had this on Christmas Eve 2010, it was
pure toast and marmalade, powerful, bone dry and yet honied –
celestial mandarin orange juice. In 2012, it is superb, with the patina
of the vintage. Figs and raisins, opulent and glittering. I just cannot
get enough of this – a poorly-disguised plea if ever there were one!
25 different growths. Pinot Noir 47%, Pinot Meunier 24%,
Chardonnay 29%. In 2012, a nose of French toast, beloved of the
citizens of New Orleans. Almond blossom and the white peaches
of old. A heavenly texture of silk that slides down – Fortuny in the
mouth! It has now acquired an alluring nutty finish to add to all the
other delights of this totally seductive wine. SS.
HARVEST IN THE CLOS DU MESNIL VINEYARD
I 25 I
KRUG CLOS DU MESNIL
Krug Clos du Mesnil, a very rare Champagne, showcases the unique
character of a single plot of Chardonnay, harvested in a single year.
Our 1.84 hectare vineyard overlooked by the village church has been
protected by walls since 1698. The vineyard is located in the heart
of Mesnil-Sur-Oger, one of the most iconic villages for Chardonnay
in the Champagne region. Krug Clos du Mesnil has an expansive
generous personality enhanced by the finish which powers through
with extreme precision.
Harmonious elegance and the finesse of the Chardonnay are a
given here, but this also has hidden depths and creamy nuttiness that
envelop you – and your palate. Long and lingering, as befits a great
vintage, the first of that magic three-in-a-row. SS.
Really honied bouquet - in a blind tasting it was clearly 1989, with all
its generous warmth and ripeness. The palate oozes ripeness and
character, with brilliant balancing acidity from the Chardonnay. Long
and luscious with a lovely fresh flourish at the end. Will age superbly.
In 2011, the bouquet of this and the 1990 Krug are, amazingly,
becoming more similar. Mandarins and fresh linen on the nose.
Then a touch of walnuts and honey. Fabulous freshness on the
palate with a smidgen of grapefruit. Very creamy. SS.
