SPECTACULAR FIRST GROWTH BORDEAUX <strong>AND</strong> GR<strong>AND</strong> CRU BURGUNDY FROM THE MOSCAHLAIDIS FAMILY CELLAR This consignment, part of a larger collection, was recently removed from the Moscahlaidis family’s temperature controlled warehouse in Long Island City. A staggering selection of mature Bordeaux is on display with five vintages of Pétrus, including a full case of 1989. Further highlights include multiple vintages of all five First Growths with full cases of 1982 Latour and Margaux, 1986 and 1989 Lafite, 1989 and 1990 Mouton Rothschild and ten previously unopened cases of 1966 Haut Brion. While collectors have a rare opportunity to purchase a full case of 1990 La Tâche from DRC, there are also other terrific offerings from this legendary vintage in Burgundy from standout producers D’Angerville, Dujac, Faiveley and Roty. All wines were purchased at retail on release and stored at the same location ever since. RED BORDEAUX CHATEAU MOUTON ROTHSCHILD Mouton, as it is affectionately known by all its devotees, is the most opulent and exuberant of all the Firsts, a reflection of the two huge personalities that have headed the Château since 1920, Baron Philippe and then Baroness Philippine de Rothschild. The great cassis depths of this wine seduce everyone who appreciates the finest Bordeaux. It is a gloriously forceful, flamboyant wine, voluptuous and powerful. Philippe Dhalluin, Mouton’s talented Technical Director, has been at the Château since the harvest of 2003 and the stunning beauty of the wines has been further strengthened by meticulous attention to detail in vineyard and cellar. Many of my own greatest wine drinking experiences revolve around Mouton throughout this century and the last. Magnificent Mouton is a sensory photo on the mind that stays with one for life. SS. Château Mouton Rothschild 1988 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé u. 4bn, 1t/hs, 7 levels into neck, original tissues An absolute classic, cedary, top Pauillac nose. More acidity than in 1989, with great projected fruit. Emphatic and cigary. This is a keeper. Glorious freshness from magnum in 2012, with excellent structure. SS. 87 12 bts (owc) per lot: $3,000-4,000 Château Mouton Rothschild 1989 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé Lot 88: u. 1bn, original tissues Lot 89: u. 3bn, 1vts, 1t/hs, 7 levels into neck This is a very great Mouton, with the Merlot picked from 6th September and the Cabernet between 16th and 25th September, the earliest vintage at Mouton. Lovely spicy nose, like a glühwein made of Cabernet Sauvignon. Concentrated, exotic and very chocolatey. One of the best, and most seductive 1989s in Bordeaux, with depth and a long finish. At home, in 2011, it was so beautiful, spicy and deep, even a little “earthy” on the finish. SS. 88 12 bts (owc) 89 12 bts (owc) per lot: $3,250-4,500 I 36 I Château Mouton Rothschild 1990 Pauillac, 1er Cru Classé u. 1bn, 1vts, original tissues Opulent, plummy nose, almost evolving into a liqueur. Flavours of leather, tobacco and prunes. You can certainly drink this from now. The last bottle I had, in 2010, had a simply wonderful, fresh bouquet that enchanted everyone at the table. CHATEAU MARGAUX Château Margaux is the most imposing building of all the First Growths, its neo-classical elegance reflected in the sheer aristocratic bearing of the wines. The superb scent of Margaux fascinates - so alluring, so complex and so giving. The Mentzelopoulos régime wines are unerringly consistent in quality, often topping the charts against the toughest opposition. There is weight and depth, added to the breed and class that come from this fabulous terroir. Modern vintages are giants, brilliant creations of technical director, Paul Pontallier, exuding richness and rewarding the drinker with undying memories. SS. Château Margaux 1982 Margaux, 1er Cru Classé u. 5bn, 3ts, 1t/hs, 3 levels into neck, stained and scuffed labels, 1 partially loose and wrinkled label, 2 pen marked labels, slightly corroded capsules, excellent color and clarity At 30 years old, absolutely stunning. Flawless and at the top of the ‘treat’ scale. The multi-layered complexity of Cabernet on supreme terroir in a very ripe year comes through on the nose, together with massive cinnamon. Dense, rich, voluptuous and thick on the palate. That blackcurrant ‘bite’ and vibrancy runs all through this. This is ‘grand vin’ at its most glorious. SS. 91 12 bts (sc) per lot: $6,000-9,000 Château Margaux 1982 Margaux, 1er Cru Classé u. 2bn, 10 levels into neck, stained, scuffed and soiled labels, 4 nicked labels, corroded capsules, excellent color and clarity At 30 years old, absolutely stunning. Flawless and at the top of the ‘treat’ scale. The multi-layered complexity of Cabernet on supreme terroir in a very ripe year comes through on the nose, together with massive cinnamon. SS. 92 11 bts (sc) per lot: $5,500-7,500 CHATEAU MARGAUX I 37 I Château Margaux 1983 Margaux, 1er Cru Classé u. 2bn, 1vts, stained and scuffed labels, 4 torn labels, corroded capsules, excellent color and clarity We put this up against the 1982 at an early 2010 dinner party at home and, yet again, some guests had it as their favourite. Certainly, now, it has gained in richness and roundness and is indubitably great wine, with chocolate, spices, orange and cassis on the nose and plums, damsons and orange skins on the palate. It really melts in the mouth and yet it is a powerhouse of a wine. In 2011, such plummy impact on the nose. You just sink into this. Fabulous and almost vanillin. SS. 93 11 bts (sc) per lot: $3,250-4,500 Château Margaux 1986 Margaux, 1er Cru Classé u. 3bn, 3 slightly damp stained labels Concentrated bouquet of pure Médoc class. Glorious cassis and currants taste. This is a great Margaux of huge richness and dimension. Stupendous. At 23 years old and from magnum, the concentration was huge, with glossy glycerol covering the power. Coats the mouth. A real 1986 Cabernet Sauvignon wine, as all the First Growth Médocs are this year. In large format, it needs 10-20 years more. In bottle in 2012, lovely, scented, cedarwood nose. Fruit, elegance and power with a great chocolatey taste. Superb. SS. 94 12 bts (owc) per lot: $4,000-6,000 Château Margaux 1989 Margaux, 1er Cru Classé 1 damp stained and 1 slightly torn label Wine gums, leather and liquorice on the nose. Immensely cinnamon bouquet and cinnamon stick flavour. Soft, open, roasted taste. So different from the 1990 in spite of similar weather conditions. Almost sandalwood. So sweet and seductive. Melted in the mouth at 20 years old. Tasted in 2010 in Hong Kong from Imperial. Lovely smoky cassis nose. Spice and liquorice on the palate. Extraordinary definition and heathery tastes. Big wine in a big format. In 2011 in bottle, it is beautifully composed and with deep impact. SS. 95 12 bts (owc) per lot: $4,000-6,000
