CHOIR GAMES NIGHT – Lesmahagow Male Voice Choir held another exciting and
challenging evening on Saturday at Bertrams with all competitions keenly fought
in, of course, the most decorous manner, as one would expect from Choir
members!. Winners and runners-up were: Pool – Del Farquharson and Eric
Watson/Jamie Brown and Scott Miller; Bowls - Jack Aitken and Kevin Cairns/Davy
Watson and Matt Sneddon [J]; Darts – Jamie Brown and Scott Miller/Davy
Watson and Matt Sneddon [J]; Dominoes – Jim Hope and Archie Lang/Del
Farquharson and Eric Watson. At the risk of being accused of ‘naming and
shaming’ other teams included: Alan Cowan/Stuart Elliott; Davy Affleck/Gordon
Brown; Matt Sneddon [S]/Iain Affleck; Val Orr/Scott Affleck. Once again grateful
thanks to Davy Affleck and Jim Hope for organisation and the Black Bull ‘lassies’
for superb service.

GAMES NIGHT – It was the usual keenly contested Lesmahagow Male Voice Choir
Games Night on Saturday at Bertrams as twenty-six stalwarts fought it out on
four fields – pool, darts, quoits and dominoes, with no quarter being asked or
given. In the Dominoes final ‘Wily Wally’ Weir and David Neill overcame maturity
and youth in the shape of Matt Sneddon and Stuart Elliot, while at Quoits the
bass section’s ‘gruesome twosome’ Jamie Brown and Jim Fordyce smoothly
moved past Iain Affleck (junior) and John Weir. At darts another maturity and
youth combination, Alec Turner and Kenneth Baxter, just managed to pip Eric
Watson and Derek Blackwood; but Eric and Derek, with some crafty play beat off
Davy Dunn and Kevin ‘hop-a-long’ Cairns at Pool. This year the ‘twats’ title, out
of everything first, went to Jim Hope and Davy Affleck. Stern words of warning
were issued to the guest participants, particularly those who lifted prizes – future
participation in social events would be dependent on joining the Choir! Once
again grateful thanks to Davy Affleck for organisation and the Black Bull ‘lassies’
for superb service.

Gazette entry
CHOIR GAMES NIGHT – On Saturday the Choir held its annual Games Night at
Bertrams with over thirty members and friends attending. The competition was
intense with plentiful, occasionally raucous, advice being given to all competitors.
In Darts Jim ‘180’ McSkimming, with assistance from Davy Neill, swept all before
him, including the beaten finalists Arthur Weir and Eric Watson. In the Dominoes
final, Robert Bryson and ‘mine host’ Stan Cuthbert were too wily for Davy Affleck
and Archie Martin. The Pool final turned out to be a competitive Watson family
match with Davy losing out to son Eric, who was assisted by Arthur Weir; Davy’s
partner was Stuart Elliott. The gamesmanship in this final had to be seen to be
believed, when even delays in chalking cues came into play. Seasoned
campaigner Archie Lang, along with Paul Kennedy, proved too strong in the
Quoits final for new member Jim Loch and Stuart Brownlie. All in all another
excellent evening, although towards the end a plaintive voice was heard to
remark “I’ve been coming here for the last ten years and haven’t won anything”;
never mind Fraser – keep trying! Once again thanks to social organiser Davy
Affleck and his team and to the Black Bull for facilities and food, for which praise
was loudly proclaimed by all participants, particularly Kenneth – at regular
intervals!

CHOIR GAMES NIGHT – December 2004
Lesmahagow Male Voice Choir members and friends held their annual Games
Night at Bertrams on December 27. As always, it was an extremely enjoyable
evening, with all competitions keenly contested. In Darts the ‘James’, Hope and
Macintyre, playing together for the second year running, came from behind to
snatch the title from Archie Lang and MOC, Master of Ceremonies, Davie Affleck.
The MOC’s team was again beaten in the Dominoes final by a combination of
youth and middle age – Richard Cairns and Stan Baxter. At Table Quoits another
youth/middle age team, Kenneth Baxter and Kevin Cairns lost out to the young
and daring partnership of Alan Cowan and Matt Sneddon Junior. The Pool title
was won by Jim Fordyce and Davie Watson, with the highlight of the evening a
four ball clearance by Davie to win the match; the losing finalists were Scott
Affleck and Matt Sneddon Senior. Thanks are again due to Laura and her staff for
the facilities and food, and to Davie Affleck for smooth organisation.
