Seasonal Flowers
Posies for Mothering Sunday, and lilies at
Easter: Interflora would be delighted -
“Say it with flowers!" As I write this, I
have just given my wife some red roses
for Valentine’s Day, and at the same time
I have enjoyed seeing the beautiful
flowers in the churchyard, both the
wreaths from Christmas, and the
snowdrops making little patchwork of tiny
perfection.
In my last church, it was traditional for all
those wishing to remember a loved one to
sponsor a lily for Easter. One of my
favourite moments of the year was at the
Easter Dawn service, coming into church
in the dark, and being thrilled at the
beautiful scent of all the lilies that filled
the church. I remember telling a
cautionary tale of an American church who
also did this year after year, collecting $5
for each lily, and then filling the balcony at
the back of church with hundreds of lilies,
looking magnificent. The churchwardens
locked the access to the balcony, claiming
health and safety.
However, one year someone was changing
light-bulbs in the church, using a ladder,
and the top of his ladder ended up very
close to the edge of the balcony. He was
surprised he could not smell anything. So
he climbed onto the balcony, and turned
to shout down to all the others helping to
prepare church the Easter Day, saying,
"They're plastic! The lilies are all fake!"
There was uproar in the church. It turned
out that the Churchwardens had been
using plastic lilies every year, claiming
that the church made much more money
this way, and that the fake lilies always
looked good, they never faded and died.
Crossway Magazine
Worplesdon Parish
With the churches of St Alban’s and St Mary’s
On one level the Churchwardens’
reasoning was logical, but this did not
prevent a great deal of anger and upset.
The whole point of flowers is that they are
living, and that they do fade and die. Both
changing beauty and the inevitability of
death are integral to life. "We blossom
and flourish like leaves on the tree, and
whither and perish, but nought changeth
Thee." In essence, life is about change, a
journey. A baby may be beautiful, but if
six years later it looked exactly the same,
and was still a beautiful baby, something
would be very wrong indeed! For some of
us on Mothering Sunday, the little posy
will bring sadness as we remember back
to our childhood, and our mothers who
may now be gone from us. For others,
handing the posy in person to those who
have mothered them will bring great joy.
This is why we offer two Mothering
Sunday services, both at 10:45am. At St
Alban's the service is jolly and joyful, and
at St Mary's the service is more reflective
and quieter. But both churches offer
posies to help us remember with
gratitude.
And all our lilies on Easter Day will be very
real, and the scent of them will fill the
church. This will be a reminder that the
inevitability of our death was shared by
Jesus, but that death could not hold him.
As the power of God burst through him in
the cold tomb, God extended the hope to
everyone that the true and enduring
beauty of life would always (by God's
grace) have the possibility of an Easter
Day.
Happy Mothering Sunday! May your Good
Friday blossom into a very Happy Easter!
Sitting With Jesus
Dear Friends,
Glenda Archer
As I walk my path with Christ (my
road to Emmaus?), I frequently have
questions. Sometimes, as I ponder
them, I get flashes of light and an
understanding that draws me closer to
Jesus. And my soul rejoices!!!
Over the next few months, I would
like to share some questions with you.
I hope that as you consider them, you
too will be drawn closer to Jesus.
When Jesus saw His mother
and the disciple whom he
loved standing beside her, he
said to His mother, ‘Woman,
here is your son.’ Then He
said to the disciple, ‘Here is
your mother.’ And from that
hour, the disciple took her
into his home.
John 19: 26-27
look after John, or for John to look
Worship through hymn singing
Hymns are a very important part of worship, providing a different way of
contributing to services than praying or speaking. They give us opportunities to
express a wide range of ideas and emotions as well as supporting the liturgy.
Hymn singing has been part of services for centuries; the number available testifies
to this. There are so many that it is impossible to capture them in one manageable
document. So, hymn books contain only a small selection. When a church
introduces a ‘new’ hymn book, some of the ‘older’ hymns will be omitted making
way for more ‘modern’ ones. This has happened down the ages, and our current
hymn book, chosen before I came to the parish, is no different. However, the
selection that we have available to us now is broad: old favourites, more modern
and (relatively) up-to-date ones – something for everyone.
Why do ‘new’ hymn books have to include modern hymns? – a question I imagine
being asked in congregations up and down the country, not just our own. Like
other areas of life, things change and move on. Sometimes we might not think
that change is for the better but we are all experiencing change continuously, all
around us. In terms of hymnody (there’s an old fashioned word!) and its role in
worship, people are still being driven to write hymns (and here I do not
differentiate between hymns and choruses). We are lucky that the Christian story
and faith still inspires the writing of hymns, anthems, masses etc. that continues
the Christian music tradition.
How can we embrace all these hymns? Like all things in life we each have
Individual tastes; diversity is an enrichment of life, not a limitation. I believe it is
so with hymns. Cherishing the old, embracing the ‘not so old’ and welcoming new,
thus broadening our hymn repertoire, enriches our worship and enriches us as
individuals. I am committed to maintaining a broad and expanding repertoire of
hymns – from Bach to the present.
We might not like all the hymns but there is an almost certain inevitability in that,
as there is in many other walks of life. However, if a hymn is unknown and you
cannot join in, then this excludes you from part of the service. I don’t wish to do
this and here I speak for the hymn choosing committee and, I believe, the clergy.
So, if you are feeling excluded or are missing a particular favourite, is
there anything you can do? Yes there is! Don’t let yourself be excluded –
come to the workshops that teach new hymns. Let yourself into the wonders of
new hymns through familiarity and learning. Experience the wonder of the words
and the beauty of the music that the hymns we choose have to offer. In terms of
hymns not meeting your preferences, talk to me. I can’t promise that I will choose
all the hymns you like but I will certainly take your views on board. Don’t sit
silently, feeling excluded or disappointed – speak up.
Singing hymns helps us to connect with God in a unique way and I would like
everyone to feel the spiritual connection that singing hymns brings.
Lent 2013
Isn't it strange? Eating less or cutting out certain foods for medical reasons is accepted by
most people. Starving oneself or going on restrictive diets in the interest of beauty or
athletic prowess is applauded by many. Yet, the suggestion that fasting and abstention
may be practised for spiritual reasons will be derided as irrelevant, old-fashioned and "pi".
No wonder many Christians nowadays are considering giving up on Lent, rather than giving
up for Lent.
To the faithful, fasting and abstention as well as discipline and self-denial are designed to
strengthen the spiritual life, by subduing the Old Adam (and the Old Eve) and revitalizing
the believer in his or her relationship with God. Fasting and abstinence have been
preached and practised for hundreds of years – but what about discipline and self-denial?
Is it all a matter of fierce asceticism, of hair-shirts and scourges? Fortunately, no – what
makes this concept so appealing is the way in which it can be practised by ordinary people,
in their ordinary everyday lives: anything that helps to combat idleness or curb
overindulgence and other vices may be used. Discipline and self-denial can, but need not,
involve fasting and abstention. Sometimes, it is not a matter of cut-it-down or cut-it-out,
but of timing: scheduling the disliked jobs before the popular pastimes – the chores before
the chocs; the tidy-up before the toddy; the Crossway before the crossword. And giving
any money saved to charity would still be an option (although it may be difficult to put a
value on a postponed crossword).
There is a practical, psychological benefit as well: these practices are a boot camp for the
soul – a means of gaining strength of character. Trials and tribulations are our common lot.
Some we are having to endure right now; others will come, some of them from totally
unexpected directions. All will need to be coped with. And any self-imposed acts of
discipline and self-denial will help to build our capability.
This may have been what the 17th-century poet John Donne had in mind when, on the
eve of a journey abroad, he wrote
Sweetest love, I do not go,
For weariness of thee,
Nor in hope the world can show
A fitter love for me;
But since that I
Must die at last, 'tis best
To use myself in jest
Thus by feign'd deaths to die.
The same idea is expressed in an 1876 Book of Etiquette for Ladies, in a chapter on
Disappointed Affections, which has this to say regarding being caught in the snares of
Cupid:
The beginning of a preference may be checked; it is only by indulgence that it
becomes unmanageable. There are few partialities which, if taken early enough ...
cannot be overcome ... whilst the power gained by such self-discipline is a
permanent advantage to the character.
And if we want to see how intimately self-denial, coping with the problems we have to
endure and becoming more Christ-like are linked, we need look no further than Matthew
16:24:
If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their
cross and follow me.
Our Charities
The African Sisters of St Mary (Masasi) is one of the charities we support as a
parish. When Kathleen was working in Tanzania, the community was young and
very small. Since then she has seen it grown immensely.
The community continues to grow steadily in numbers, and the Sisters are most
grateful for the help – financial and practical – that they receive from many
sources. The increase in numbers means that there is always building work to be
done, which is costly and time consuming.
The Sisters work in their local communities in education and medical work. Some
Sisters have been able to pursue further education courses to upgrade their
qualifications in these fields.
They also do agriculture, growing crops and keeping livestock where possible. In
this way they can produce food for their own needs, and also to help others in
times of shortage. Some Sisters drive tractors, and can even turn their hands to
servicing their vehicles! In addition to all this, they assist in church work, making
wafers, caring for linen and vestments etc.
All in all, the Community of St Mary does very valuable work with disadvantaged
people in Tanzania and Zambia, particularly the women and children. This is a
most worthwhile charity to support.
December 2012
Chris was inspired to write this poem
by his friend Duncan – a professing
atheist. Duncan developed progressive
cancer, ending up in the ICU with bone
cancer at Christmas 2011. His
daughter told the doctor he wanted to
continue the fight. When Chris went to
visit him, he was greeted with the
words, “It is all your fault”! He said he
had seen the Lord, a dazzling white
light blinded him but he heard the voice
w h i c h s a i d , “ Y o u r s i n s a r e
forgiven.” He was a delightfully
cheerful man and his cancer seemed to
be in remission. He was baptised last
November, but he developed a
2012 and died peacefully with his
family round him on Friday, 4th
Worplesdon Garden Club – February Meeting
The speaker at our February meeting was Mark Saunders the Head Gardener at
Fittleworth House in Pulborough, West Sussex. His talk was entitled “Annuals – but
not bedding”. Mark is an enthusiastic gardener who believes in filling your borders
with colour throughout the season by using annuals that can be grown from seed in
the early spring.
Some of the plants he recommends are: Ammi, Cosmos, Marigolds, Lavatera and
for end of season colour Rudbeckia and Gazinias and they can all be sown in March/
April for planting out once the danger of frost has gone (probably mid May
onwards) If you have a patch of spare ground which you can prepare by racking to
a fine tilth then another good idea was to pick 3 packets of hardy annual seeds,
perhaps with a colour scheme, mix all the seeds together and sow directly in the
prepared soil. This will give you plenty of colour and also flowers to pick for
indoors.
He gave a demonstration on the best way of sowing seeds to get good results and
by following his guidelines we should get enough plants to fill our borders at a
fraction of the cost of buying ready grown plants.
Mark is also a keen photographer and his digital presentation illustrating what you
can achieve by using annuals was excellent.
Fittleworth House is open for the NGS (National Garden Scheme) every Wednesday
from 1st May to 17th July (2-5pm). For full information visit the NGS website
A Quick Guide to Major Festivals and Events
A few years ago we went, as a family,
to a weekend Christian event called
“Life is for Joy” held at Wintershall. We
enjoyed it so much that we went back
the following year – but that was the
last time it was held. Recently, we
wondered if there was a similar event
that we’d want to visit, so I spent a
few hours searching the web to find
out what’s out there. I thought I’d
share with you (with some thanks to
Wikipedia) a summary of some of the
events I found…
Garden Tips for March from
Worplesdon Garden Club
13
With the weather being so wet and cold during
February the spring flowers have been very slow
to emerge but don’t lose heart they will catch up
as soon as the weather picks up. You should still
have beautiful Hellebores to admire and if the
rest of your bulbs are a bit on the late side it
means that spring will hopefully last a bit longer
than normal.
It’s not too late to think about sowing some
seeds for annuals and bedding especially if you
have a greenhouse or a heated propagator. It’s
also the best time to start buying plug plants to
grow on for your hanging baskets and containers.
Hygiene is important so don’t forget to give your
greenhouse a good clean and disinfect and to
thoroughly clean out pots and seed trays so that
you have a ready supply for potting on all your
seedlings etc.
Come along and meet some of our club
members at the Car Boot Sale on 2 nd March
where we will be holding a plant sale – you might
get a few bargains!
