Brief story about the birth of the Automobile Club de Monaco
A Grand Prix in Monaco ? …
What a funny idea to organise a race in a country as confined as Monaco. Who had this crazy idea?
On 26th August 1890, an association named the SPORT VELOCIPEDIQUE MONEGASQUE was created
regrouping people keen on bicycles, then called velocipedes.
Upon the arrival of motor vehicles, this association became the SPORT AUTOMOBILE et VELOCIPEDIQUE
MONEGASQUE, on 28th August 1907.
The 1st Monte-Carlo Rally took place on 21st January 1911.
On 29th March 1925, during the annual general meeting of the club, a new name was decided : AUTOMOBILE
CLUB DE MONACO, the “ACM”.
The President, Alexandre NOGHES, wanted the newly formed ACM to become a member of the prestigious
organisation “Association Internationale des Automobiles Club Réunis”. The AIACR, later became the Fédération
Internationale de l’Automobile, the FIA.
Antony NOGHES, the son, Commissaire Général of the ACM, having organised the Monte-Carlo Rally, the
“concours d’élégance” in Monaco, the “Mont Agel Hill Climb” and the “Semaine de l’Automobile de Monaco”,
went to Paris to apply and plead for the admission of the Club to the AIACR.
Unfortunately, the 33 country members rejected the admission of the Automobile Club of Monaco, in spite of
the prestigious motor sport events organised, explaining that none were running entirely within the territory of
the Principality of Monaco.
Antony NOGHES, upset, cut to the quick, and pronounced, much without thinking, and to the surprise of
the members of the prestigious general meeting : “never mind, next year an international race will be organised
within the territory of Monaco !”. This idea caused a stir and appeared extravagant to the members, and to
himself, somewhat… but still !
And so, one morning, at the crack of dawn, Antony Noghes set off on foot around the circuit. He started at
Boulevard Albert 1er (the current starting area), continuing up Beau Rivage to the Place du Casino (Camembert),
down the Spelugues, past the Mirabeau corner, the Monte-Carlo train station, then Portier, through the Tir aux
Pigeons tunnel, along Boulevard Louis II, Quai de Plaisance, and so on…
One obstruction was immediately apparent - the stairs linking Place Sainte Devote with the sea front, where
the tobacconists (“Tabac”) was located. That did not deter him. Antony Noghes did away with this “obstacle” and
so the circuit continued its way along the quayside, past the gasometers and on to the finish line on Boulevard
Albert 1er.
On 13th October 1928, the Automobile Club de Monaco became the 34th country to be admitted as a member
of the AIACR, under the condition that the race announced would take place.
A dream became a reality.
It was 84 years ago, on Sunday 14th April 1929, under spring sunshine, H.S.H. Prince Pierre of Monaco,
grandfather of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III, formally opened the circuit of the 1st Grand Prix de Monaco driving a
VOISIN. At 13 h 30, 16 competitors, representing 7 countries and 6 makes of cars, started the Grand Prix, on the
original circuit that has hardly changed to this day.
Three hours, 56 minutes and 11 seconds later, the 100 laps were accomplished at an average speed of 80,194
km/h. H.S.H. Prince Louis II, the Sovereign Prince of Monaco, awarded a cup to the winner, an Englishman called
William GROVER, competing under the pseudonym “Williams” driving a 2,3 litres supercharged BUGATTI 35.
Moreover security obliges us to establish forbidden and restricted areas. In the restricted areas
it is possible to stay a brief instant only with the head-marshal consent. These zones are clearly
indicated on the circuit by panels and are also shown on the attached map.
THE CIRCUIT
The circuit itself had not undergone any major changes, until 1952 where modifications are
brought to the Sainte Dévote bend. It was not until 1973 that the layout underwent a change
again. It was extended another 135 ms by the addition of a new track along the port, a track
which was to join the track of the new pool and which would end in a hairpin bend around the
restaurant “La Rascasse”. As the length of each lap was increased, the Grand Prix was shortened
to 78 laps. In 1976, two more chicanes, one to Sainte Dévote, the other coming round the
“La Rascasse hairpin bend” were added, then in 1986, the widening of the road at the beginning
of the “Quai des Etats Unis” at the foot of the “Boulevard Louis II” descent, allowed the
creation of a new chicane. In 1997, the first “S” of the Swimming pool has been drawn again
and is called bend “Louis Chiron”.
Between 2002 and 2003 Grand Prix: construction of a platform of about 5000 m2 by creating
a 150m long quayside wall aligned on the old front at a distance of approximately thirty meters.
The quayside wall has been made by stacking nearly 400 concrete blocks, each weighing 10
tones.
It also serves as a retaining wall for the 25,000 m3 of calibrated backfill used for reclaiming the
land to create a new platform of about 5000m2 1.20 m above sea-level.
In the mass of the platform nearly 3 km of trenches have been laid for installing various main
networks. The networks will supply the area with electricity, telephony, television, drinking
water and sewage, both during the Grand Prix period and for future events.
On the surface of the platform, there are:
- The new stretch of the Formula 1 circuit track. This consists in the translation of the former
line by about ten meters towards the waterfront
- 36 concrete supports which used as of the 2004 Grand Prix for assembling the metal scaffolding
for the spectator boxes 13m from ground level above the three new stands and overlooking
the new stand area.
MONACO PODIUM PROCEDURE
One lap after the finish line is crossed, the winner and second and third finishers stop below
the Princely Lodge. When the constructor of the winning car has joined them, they enter the
Princely Lodge. The winning driver’s national anthem is played first, followed by that of the
winning constructor. If the driver and constructor both share the same national anthem then
it is played once only.
HSH Prince Albert II of Monaco then presents his trophy to the winning driver. The winning
constructor, second-placed driver and third-placed driver each receive their prizes in that
order. Champagne.
Unilateral TV interviews of the top three drivers are then conducted, in the Princely Lodge, for
the attendant public.
Then, immediately after the interviews, the three drivers will be driven to the Press Centre, on
Quai Antoine 1er, where further unilateral interviews take place.
The latter will be televised and retransmitted as such in the Press Centre. The interviews will
be followed by a press conference for the media.
70 th MONACO F1 GRAND PRIX - 24-27 MAY 2012
Free Practice
There were blue skies and bright sunshine for the first Free Practice session on Thursday 24th May.
Fernando Alonso had the best time with 1 min 16.265 sec. In the afternoon the weather changed
and the entire second session took place in the rain. The teams took the opportunity to change to
intermediate tires. Jenson Button drove the fastest time with 1 min. 15.746 sec. In the last session on
Saturday morning, the sun shone again and the temperature rose. Nico Rosberg completed the fastest
lap with a time of 1 min. 15.159 sec.
Qualifying
On Saturday 26th May at 2 p.m., the Qualifying sessions started with glorious sunshine. Hulkenberg
surprised everyone with the best time in Q1, followed by Kobayashi and Frenchman Romain Grosjean.
Perez hit the rails at the swimming-pool section, which prevented him from continuing the Qualifying
sessions. For the second year running, the Mexican finished his race on the Monegasque crash barriers.
In Q2, times were very tight between the top ten finishers. Felipe Massa was fastest with 1 min. 14.911
sec. Jenson Button failed to qualify for Q3. At 43 years of age, Michael Schumacher finished fastest in
Q3 with a final lap time of 1 min. 14.301 sec, ahead of Mark Webber and Nico Rosberg who completed
the front three line up. This was Massa’s first Q3 qualification of the season.
The race
Demoted by a penalty picked up during the Spanish Grand Prix for his crash with Bruno Senna,
Michael Schumacher started from 6th place on the grid. Schumacher’s loss was Mark Webber’s gain,
and he started the race in pole, with Nico Rosberg joining him in the front row. Due to numerous
penalties, only 7 drivers started from the position they qualified for. Romain Grosjean made a mess of
his start, making contact with Fernando Alonso on his right, and then veering to the left, where he hit
Michael Schumacher’s Mercedes hard. In so doing he seriously damaged his Lotus, which spun round
a few meters further on. The Frenchman abandoned the race. Pastor Maldonado and Pedro De la Rosa
also fell victim to the incident and both had to abandon the race on the first lap. Meanwhile, Vettel
gained 3 places, moving up from 9th to 6th on the first lap. The first round of pit stops to fit new tires
took place between laps 27 and 38. Vettel who had kept softs from Q3 was the only one not to pit,
which allowed him to increase his lead to 15.8 seconds over teammate Mark Webber, who followed in
second place. Unfortunately, this lead didn’t prove sufficient because when he finally pitted, on lap 46,
Mark Webber took the lead, followed by Rosberg and Alonso. Vettel squeezed in, in 4th place, ahead
of Hamilton. Only 2.3 seconds separated the front five over the last 8 laps of the Monaco Grand Prix –
an exceptionally tight finish for a Grand Prix. Kobayashi, Petrov, Schumacher, Pic and Ricciardo didn’t
finish the race due to technical difficulties with their cars. Despite rain forecast for the final laps, only
Jean-Eric Vergne changed strategy and fitted intermediates. A few drops started to fall but they had
no impact on the end of the race. Mark Webber (Red Bull Racing) won the 70th Monaco Grand Prix,
after 78 laps, followed by Nico Rosberg (Mercedes Petronas F1 Team) and Fernando Alonso (Scuderia
Ferrari). The Australian gave Red Bull its 3rd consecutive victory in Monaco, and he became the 6th
driver to win a Grand Prix since the start of the 2012 season.
2013 FORMULA ONE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
TECHNICAL REGULATION CHANGES
• Tyres
Heavier by 2 kg (700 g for rear tyres and 200 g for front tyres); car weight has increased
from 640 to 642 kg.
• Weight distribution
The minimum weight distribution plan introduced in 2011 has been changed; henceforth
there must be minimum loads of 292 kg on the front and 343 kg on the rear.
• No more double DRS
Adjustable double DRS have been disallowed; it is no longer possible for the movable rear
wing to be used to control a second system.
• Crash tests improved
Crash test regulations have been strengthened and all chassis are affected.
• Aerodynamic ducts
The use of a duct on the front of the chassis is no longer allowed for any reason other than
cooling the cockpit.
• Aesthetics
The stepped nose effect, caused by the lowering of the front wing, may be masked by the
addition of a coloured ‘modesty’ panel covering the space between the chassis and the
wing.
• Electronics
A new Electronic Control Unit, developed by McLaren Electronic Systems, will be more
complex and speed up the execution of instructions.
SPORTING REGULATION CHANGES
• Electronics
Drivers must submit their engine design to the FIA. No modification may be made without
justification.
• Suspension
The suspension system may not exceed six elements (arms, rods, wishbones).
• DRS
DRS may no longer be used freely in Free Practice and Qualifying. It may only be used, as
in races, in race zones specified by the FIA.
• The curfew rules initiated in 2012 have changed. On Thursday evenings, the length of time
during which one may not work on the car has been increased from 6 to 8 hours.
• Each F1 team is limited to 60 team members on a circuit.
• No exceptions to the rule obliging cars to have a minimum of one litre of fuel in their tank
before returning to the pits at the end of Qualifying.
2013 F1 World Championship Grands Prix
AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX
17TH MARCH 2013 – ALBERT PARK CIRCUIT
Qualifying:
Sebastian Vettel claimed his 37th pole position with a time of 1 min. 27.407 sec, ahead of teammate
Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton, thus duplicating the top three starting order of 2012. The session was
interrupted by heavy rain on the Australian circuit. This completely disrupted qualifying and pushed
back Q3 to Sunday morning.
1st GP for J. Bianchi, V. Bottas, E. Gutierrez, M. Chilton and G. van der Garde.
The race:
Vettel had an excellent start but Webber made a mess of it and was left standing on the starting line.
Coming out of the first bend, Vettel led the Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso, who had
overtaken Hamilton. Then came Kimi Raikkonen, Nico Rosberg and Mark Webber. Raikkonen overtook
Hamilton on the second lap and moved into 4th place. First pit stop for Jenson Button, who changed
tyres. Vettel stopped on lap 7, followed by Massa on lap 8, and on lap 9 by Alonso and Raikkonen, who
also fitted new tyres. Hamilton was now in the lead in front of Rosberg. On lap 13, Hamilton pitted for
the first time and Rosberg came in on lap 14. Adrian Sutil took the lead, ahead of Vettel, Massa and
Alonso. On lap 20, Alonso stopped for a second time, then on the following lap Sutil made his first stop
and Vettel his second. On lap 23, following several pit stops by drivers, Raikkonen moved into the lead
for the first time. On lap 25, Pastor Maldonado came off the track and abandoned the race. Two laps
later, it was Rosberg’s turn to quit, due to an electrical fault. Then it started raining. The leadership
continued to change until the end of the race as drivers made pit stops. On lap 40, Daniel Ricciardo
abandoned with a broken exhaust. Sutil lost several places due to a poor strategy and choice of tyres.
Kimi Raikkonen celebrated his first win of 2013 and his 20th Grand Prix victory, with Alonso in second
place and Vettel in third.
Best lap time went to Raikkonen.
MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX
24TH MARCH 2013 – SEPANG CIRCUIT
Qualifying:
38th pole position for Sebastian Vettel. Kimi Raikkonen was penalised three places on the starting grid
for obstructing Nico Rosberg in Qualifying.
The race:
All the cars started the race fitted with intermediate tyres. Vettel made an excellent start, with Alonso
behind him. In an impulsive move, the Spaniard damaged his front wing on the first turn, by making
contact with the Red Bull. Webber got off to a very good start, and was in third place ahead of Hamilton
and Massa. Alonso did not pit on lap 1, but on lap 2 his Ferrari’s front wing fell off and the Spaniard
found himself in the gravel trap and abandoned the race. Rosberg overtook Button at the end of lap
3. At the start of lap 5, Vettel and Massa came in to change tyres. Vettel opted for mediums and as a
result found himself in difficulty on wet stretches of track and lost places. Webber and Hamilton pitted
on lap 7. Hamilton lost a few seconds by stopping at the McLaren pits by mistake. As Vergne emerged
from the pits, he collided with Pic who was coming in to his pit station. Change of front wing for the
Toro Rosso. Webber made a 2nd pit stop on lap 19. On lap 22, Di Resta abandoned the race and Vettel
and Rosberg pitted. Vettel returned to the race behind his teammate, who was in first place. Sutil quit
on lap 27. Hamilton came in to refuel, initiating the third round of pit stops. Vettel made his third stop
on lap 32. On lap 35, Webber regained the lead, having overtaken Button as he braked at the end of
the straight outside the pits. Button pitted at the end of that lap. As he left his pit station, he came to
halt in the pit lane, with a right front wheel that hadn’t been tightened. Vettel moved into second place
by overtaking Hamilton at the end of the straight outside the pits. Hamilton made his last stop on lap
41. At the end of lap 43, Webber, still in the lead, made his 4th pit stop and re-emerged just ahead of
Vettel. On lap 46, Maldonado abandoned the race with a faulty KERS, and Vettel overtook teammate
Webber on the outside of a bend. On lap 54, Massa overtook Grosjean, who had tyres problems, and
finished 5th.
On the 56th and final lap, Vettel sealed his 27th victory, ahead of Webber and the two Mercedes of
Hamilton and Rosberg.
CHINA GRAND PRIX
14TH APRIL 2013 – SHANGHAI CIRCUIT
Qualifying:
Very good weather on the Shanghai circuit. The drivers started Q1 10 minutes behind schedule. Mark
Webber, suffering from a fuel problem, came to a halt during Q2, before being eliminated for having
taken on too little fuel, for which he was demoted to last place on the grid. A second pole position in
China for Mercedes and their second since their return to F1. Lewis Hamilton took his first pole of the
year and the 27th of his career. In 2012, Nico Rosberg had taken pole for Mercedes.
At the end of Q3, driver order on the first two rows of the starting grid were: Lewis Hamilton, Kimi
Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and Nico Rosberg.
The race:
Kimi Raikkonen made a very bad start and allowed the Ferraris of Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa
to overtake and move up behind Hamilton. Paul Di Resta and Adrian Sutil, both of Force India, made
contact. Mark Webber, who had started from the pits with softs, stopped on the first lap to change to
mediums. On the straight outside the pits, Alonso passed Hamilton, and his teammate Massa followed
suit just before the first bend. On lap 5, Gutierrez was too slow to brake before a corner, and hit the
back of Sutil’s car, forcing both to abandon the race. On this same lap, the two Mercedes made their
first pit stop and fitted mediums. On the following lap, it was Raikkonen and Alonso’s turn to pit. On lap
14, Vettel and Hulkenberg also pitted, and Vettel joined the race ahead of his countryman, who had lost
significant time during his stop. Jenson Button was in the lead, ahead of Alonso, Di Resta and Perez.
On lap 15, Webber hit the Toro Rosso of Jean-Eric Vergne while trying to overtake him. He damaged
his front wing and was forced to make another visit to the pits. Raikkonen and Perez then suffered an
identical accident at the same spot. However, the damaged nose of the Lotus did not cause the Finn
to pull in. Webber, who had slowed right down, then lost his right rear wheel, which had been badly
tightened during his last pit stop, and was forced to quit the race. Rosberg made a second pit stop on
lap 19, but the German abandoned the race on the following lap. Alonso passed Button at the end of the
straight outside the pits and moved into the lead. As drivers made pit stops the leadership passed from
one driver to another. Alonso made his last stop on lap 41 and joined the track behind Vettel, whom he
went on to overtake at the end of the straight outside the pits, on lap 43. With 10 laps to go, Alonso led,
followed by Vettel, Raikkonen, Hamilton and Button.
On the 56th and final lap, Alonso sealed his 31st victory, ahead of Raikkonen and Hamilton, who
managed to fend off Vettel’s repeated attacks.
BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX
21 APRIL 2013 - SAKHIR CIRCUIT
Qualifying
Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen were expected and it is finally Nico Rosberg, by
more than 40 degrees in the shade, who has the best shot out of the game. The German has been fairly
steady nerves to get the second pole of his career ahead of Vettel, Alonso and Felipe Massa.
The race
Second on the grid next to Rosberg, Vettel had to resist Alonso in the first few meters, the Spanish
scoring an excellent start. Faster than Rosberg, the triple world champion took three laps before
grabbing the first place. There has never dropped thereafter. If the race winner was serene behind him,
fighting raged throughout the 57 laps and at all levels of the field. If there was as much performance
on the track, it is also because the drivers were on different strategies. That Alonso was nevertheless
undermined from the start of the race, when his DRS is stuck open. The Spaniard had to spend twice the
pits two laps, farewell hopes of victory ... And after these countless overtaking (Including the fratricidal
battle between Button and Perez and explanation between Webber and Hamilton), it is ultimately
the two Lotus which are the best finishers. Only 8th and 11th on the grid, Kimi Raikkonen and Romain
Grosjean finished second and third, allowing Lotus taking second place in the constructors’ standings.
If the Finn was able to hold his two stop strategy through, his teammate struggled with several other
drivers, including Paul di Resta, to pick up the fourth podium of his career.
SPANISH GRAND PRIX
12th may 2013 - BaRCELONa CiRCuit
Qualifying
The first line is fully of «Mercedes» colour’s. For the second consecutive time, Nico Rosberg
set the fastest lap of Q3, ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton. Sebastian Vettel is third on
the starting line. Felipe Massa and Esteban Gutierrez were sentenced to a demotion of three
places on the starting line by the Stewards for obstructing Mark Webber, for the first one and
Kimi Raikkonen, for the second one.
Race
After a splendid start, Fernando Alonso is on the front line, moving from 5th to 3rd place. The
Spaniard then takes advantage of Sebastian Vettel after the first stop, before taking the lead
of the race by overtaking Nico Rosberg on lap 13. But the race is far from over. Alonso rushes
again to the pit on lap 22, leaving the way open for Vettel, and then Raikkonen (25th lap).
The Spaniard took the lead of the race and manages to keep it that way after his third stop
(lap 37). He tries to preserve his tires, while widening the gap. At lap 50, Alonso stops for the
last time while standing in the frontline, taking advantage of 18 seconds ahead of Massa, his
teammate. He continues to lead and widening the gap on Raikkonen, the only second driver in
the frontline who stopped three times. On the finishing line, Alonso won ahead of Raikkonen
and Massa. Vettel fails in fourth place ahead of his teammate Mark Webber. Nico Rosberg
manages to save a sixth position after starting from pole, the German who had to hold out
against the attacks of Paul di Resta at the end of the race.
THE PRINCIPALITY OF MONACO
An independent and sovereign state, the Principality of Monaco shares its land frontiers with many of the
Maritime Alps districts : from west to east, Cap d’Ail, La Turbie, Beausoleil and Roquebrune Cap Martin, all
facing the Mediterranean.
The population of the Principality is about 32.000 inhabitants of which 7.000 are nationals.
The surface area is about 195 hectres, of which about 40 are land reclaimed from the sea over the past 20
years.
It spreads on a narrow belt coastal setting up sometimes almost to the vertical and cuminate at 163 meters.
The width ranges from 1050 metres in some place to only 350 metres in others. It runs alongside the sea
for 4100 metres.
The Principality is not made up of just one district, Monaco, whose borders are often confused with those
of the state.
It is divided into five districts :
• Monaco Ville on the Rock, the old fortress site, with the Prince’s Palace, the ramparts, the gardens, the
Cathedral and the Oceanography Museum,
• The Condamine, the port district,
• Monte-Carlo, founded in 1866 during the reign of Prince Charles III who gave it its name, with its world
famous casino, its great hotels and recently built leisure spots : the Larvotto beach, the Monte-Carlo Sporting
Club and the Boulingrins gardens,
• Fontvieille, a great technical development with a breakwater, 40 metres deep and a 22 hectre strip of land
which supports an urban, touristic and sports complex, joining a pleasure port to a pollution-free industrial
zone,
• Moneghetti, les Révoires and the Jardin Exotique (to the west on the border with Cap d’Ail).
A mild winter and a not too hot summer. The average annual temperature is 16°,31 and the Principality
benefits from exceptional sunshine.
