The New Testament: Factors Affecting Slavery • Christians, through conversions, inherited a complex institution by responding in 2 ways: – Manumitting slaves & support in community • Aversion to slavery in principle • Condemnation of virtually all sources of slaves • Ethics of generosity, inclusion, hospitality, and forgiveness that mitigated indenture for debt and crime, and integrated newly freed people • Strong leaning towards voluntary manumission – Ignoring slavery within the Christian community • Embraced the full humanity of the person, with all rights from, and responsibilities to, Jesus
The New Testament: Factors Affecting Slavery • Christians did not enslave anyone for three to four centuries • War captives – Augustine (d.430 AD) produced the ‘just war’ theory, trying to define and limit the defensive war; this can be seen as both a good faith effort but also a rationalization – Conflict with Islam starting in the mid 600’s produced slaves by war captivity, in Spain and Portugal, Eastern Europe, and the Middle East
