BRANCO LOST FOR WORDS
The elite Yoseikan squad
demonstrated their appreciation for all
the extra work and training facilities
that Branco provides. They presented
him with an extra large hand made
card. It was a rare moment indeed to
see Branco lost for words.
Tony has contributed greatly to the
development of our elite competitors.
He has gained invaluable experience as
KARATE TRAINING FOR OLDER
PEOPLE by Vidas Ridikas
I had the privilege of sitting next to
Branco on the grading panel during
our December grading at the Liverpool
dojo in Sydney. Branco and I had
difficulty in hearing each other during
the grading.
We both
agreed that
this was not
age related
but due to the
hum of background noise in the dojo.
Soon after I had difficulty reading the
grading form which I attributed to poor
light and not to the fact that I left my
reading glasses at home. Branco had
no problems as he was wearing his
stylish reading glasses.
This started me thinking about age and
karate training. The benefits of
physical exercise and fitness are well
known and include:
* Improvement in our metabolism.
* Reduced fat accumulation.
* Reduced narrowing of our arteries.
* Reduced risk of blocked arteries.
* Reduced blood pressure.
* Improved bone density.
* Increased muscle mass.
* Improved mental acuity.
* Improved self esteem and self-
confidence (makes us feel good), and
of course; improves cardiovascular
fitness.
There are many forms of physical
exercise which people participate in
and they all have their benefits. So I
started to look at karate training and
compared it with the popular forms of
exercise.
Running and cycling focus on the legs
and are single dimensional exercises.
That is the legs move in a single plane,
in and up and down motion with little
upper body involvement.
Swimming involves all the body and is
an excellent all round exercise. Weight
training involves all the muscle groups
but does not focus on aerobic fitness.
Aerobics and all its dance related
derivatives are excellent exercise
programs as they involve all parts of
the body and improve physical and
aerobic fitness, body coordination and
flexibility.
1
The ball sports, soccer, tennis,
basketball, rugby etc all improve
fitness and involve a high degree of
body coordination. All these forms of
exercise are good but they lack the
completeness of karate training
(martial arts in general). Karate
training includes all parts of the body
and unlike most other forms of popular
training routines incorporates
stretching as an essential part of the
training process. Karate training also
focuses on both sides of the body with
almost equal emphasis on the left and
right sides of the body. With perhaps
the exception of gymnastics and
aerobics/dancing no other sport
demands the high degree of body
coordination and flexibility required
by karate. How many sports involve
the simultaneous movement of arms
and legs in different directions in a
controlled and orderly manner?
Another good thing about karate,
which is absent in most other sports, is
that it has an almost limitless supply of
learning challenges. Most sports
require the mastering of a few
techniques but in karate there are an
endless number of techniques and kata
available for the keen student to learn,
making it a lifelong journey that grows
with you.
Because karate training offers a
complete exercise package it is
eminently suitable for older people. It
provides all the physical benefits of
exercising all parts of the body,
including stretching and is mentally
stimulating as well. Kata is
particularly useful for older people as
it can be performed in a slow and
controlled manner as desired. There is
a great sense of achievement when a
kata is mastered.
Sparring can be a bit daunting to older
people but if it is done in a strictly non
contact form it can be a lot of fun and
provides the benefit of learning some
self defense along the way.
When I look back on my karate
experience I can still recall my first
lesson. I was 35 years old and it was
way back in 1980. I turned up to the
dojo in a pair of shorts and tee shirt. I
was the oldest student in the class. I
had never been to a class before so I
didn’t know what to expect. I was a
keen cyclist, runner and kayaker, so I
was fit. Half an hour after the class
started I didn’t know my left hand
from my right. I was waving my arms
around trying to learn the various
blocks which the kids around me
performed perfectly. Being a bloke I
thought I could punch but I looked like
a chook flapping its wings about every
time I tried to punch. My stances were
clumsy, my kicks were awful and I
thought, “How can people do this
stuff?!” After the break we started
stretching. What was this for? I could
barely reach past my knees when
trying to touch my toes. Then we
paired up and the stretching got serious.
This was torture. After that was over
we started on kata. Well if I was
confused before I was a complete
uncoordinated mess by then.
Then the sparring started and I was
little more than a punching bag. I was
glad the class was finally over. The
next day I ached where I never knew I
had muscles. I could barely walk with
the pain in my legs from the stretching.
But I loved it. I went back and became
a regular student. My blocks and kicks
improved and I could punch in a
straight line and eventually I could do
the full splits. And I even managed to
learn some kata.
Karate training has kept me fit and
flexible and improved my health and
sparring has helped me cope with
confrontational situations.
So come on you parents, karate can do
this for you too. Join in and
participate in a mature student class.
Reverse the aging process, enjoy
feeling young again and have some fun
along the way!
PERTH BLACK BELT GRADINGS
Perth 20 th November 2011
Black belt gradings are one of the most
important days on our calendar.
Becoming a Yoseikan black belt is far
from easy. Junior black belt gradings
take from 4 to 5 hours. The success
rate is not always high. The sense of
pride and the feeling of euphoria
cannot be explained. You can only
appreciate what it takes after you have
achieved it.
There is no charge for the black belt
grading. It is free! Well not really! It is
free in the sense that it does not cost
any money. It is not free in the time
and effort that it takes for a student to
achieve their black belt.
Branco always reminds students that
this is something that cannot be bought.
It is something that can only be
achieved.
Congratulations to the successful
recipients. Wear your belt with pride
and dignity.
2012 "TOURNAMENT OF
CHAMPIONS"
I extend my thanks to all the
volunteers who devoted their time to
making the tournament an outstanding
success. The main reason our
tournaments have outlasted any other
Australian Karate tournament is the
fact that the money raised is used to
assist our competitors travel costs.
Divisions were created to give all
levels an opportunity to win or place.
For the 8 years and under all the
competitors win a medal. It is
important that a child’s first
introduction to tournaments be a
positive experience.
In the next level, Novice 10 th – 5 th kyu,
competitors have to place to win a
medal. Once a competitor wins this
level they can only enter the Novice all
grades. When they win the Novice all
grades division they can only enter the
Open divisions. The Open divisions
have triple samurai swords or Crystal
trophies. The Open trophies motivate
the competitors to compete in the open
divisions.
We would like to share an email
received from the Oskam family. It is
nice to be appreciated.
Hi Branco and Nives,
We wanted to Congratulate you both,
and the club for putting on such a
professional and well organized
tournament.
Jacob and Sam have been involved at a
Pee-wee level for the last few years,
and this was Jake’s first time in the
aged competition. We, as parents were
nervous, and could only imagine the
feelings of the kids! The level of
support given by all of the trainers on
an individual case was exceptional,
and it really did make such a
difference.
Every child in the Kumite had a
support coach, who gave enough time
after each round to cheer, celebrate or
comfort the kids as they finished each
of their rounds. That was brilliant to
see, and I really wanted to say Thank
you.
Jessica was Jacob’s support and she
was fantastic. We were worried he’d
be crushed that he didn’t make a medal,
but he said he was fine. He spoke to
Jess about what he did well in his
round, and he can learn what to focus
6
on in his training for next time, which
is so encouraging.
We were also very impressed with the
referees, and the level of care they ran
each segment with. They were very
swift to action any incident and the
Doctors were on hand to ensure all the
kids were safe. I did feel so much
more comfortable after witnessing this,
especially being one of those over
protective mothers.
It is very easy for Parents to sit on
sidelines and be critical of events and
not understand what is involved in
making things like this come together,
so I felt it important to take the time to
write and say Thank you for the
commitment and dedication you and
all of your instructors give to my
children, and all the kids in the
club. We are thrilled to be a part of it.
Kind Regards,
Marna and James Oskam
ADAM CAMUGLIA IN
JAPAN!
I had the pleasure of attending Fukui
Senior High School on my school trip
to Japan from the 13-27 April. Here I
am pictured with Ricky Kaminski
from a recent article in the Fukui
Times. Ricky and I were former
Junior Australian Team Members over
20 years ago - coincidentally in Japan
and Branco was the National Junior
Coach at the time. The article
commemorated our long commitment
to the sport together with our passion
as teachers (Ricky an English Teacher
at the School). I also had the task of
teaching Karate to the high school
Karate team (see also pictured) - which
is the equivalent of "selling ice to an
eskimo". Overall, a fantastic
experience and one I will cherish
forever. I hope to visit Fukui again
soon!
WA STATE
CHAMPIONSHIPS
Yoseikan once again acquitted itself
exceptionally well at the State Karate
Championships.
As usual it was the majority of the
Yoseikan Parents & Supporters who
did most of the work. We would like
other organisations to assist. However
it is not the norm. In the end if the
tournament is not organized properly
our students will suffer.
ELLENBROOK
Portia James and Tayla Sheppe
Ellenbrook dojo
Portia James, Tyson Murphy, Dylan
O'Dell, Choe O'Dell and Devan James
It's hard to believe that two years have
already passed since the re-opening of
the Yoseikan Ellenbrook dojo. And to
see some mid range belts is testament
to those students who have continued
to find karate enjoyable and
challenging.
We have also seen a number of
students participate in tournaments
with a couple of highlights being Tayla
Sheppe placing second and Portia
James, third, in their respective
divisions at the 2012 State
Championships, well done to them
both. As majority of the students are
quite young, the ability to participate
in a competition and take away a
medal is always good for news day at
school.
Ellenbrook dojo, like any other
Yoseikan dojo is pretty much a family
affair and it is great to see more family
members joining. For the Murphy's
who are expecting a 4th brother or
sister in the coming few months, we
wish you all the best.
A big thanks to the parents who
continue to provide support (as
participants or taxis), I know that it is
not always easy to pack the kids after
school and get them motivated to get
to Karate, making for a long day.
Once again, I look forward to
providing another club picture in the
coming years as they serve as
memories and reminders of where we
have been and how far we have
come!
NEW BLACK BELTS
CHRISTIAN SISARICH
Commenced Karate 6/06/2007
Christian has always been committed
to his training. He is always smiling.
Just don’t touch his hair! I have no
idea what sticky stuff he puts in it. It
feels like glue.
AIDEN HOWITT
Commenced Karate 6/02/2008
Aiden is another hard worker. I can’t
remember ever giving him less than 10
in his training diary. He has been a
delight to teach. The fact that he
probably can’t see me due to his
abundant hair is beside the point.
JOSHUA LILLEYMAN
Commenced Karate 23/04/2007
Joshua is an intense young man. I
suspect being the youngest sibling in a
family of four he had to be tough.
MEDINA CALUK
Commenced Karate 21/06/2007
Medina decided about 12 months ago
that she was going to get her black belt.
With her goal in mind she trained with
a vengeance. Medina has a flare for
kata. Let’s hope she develops to her
full potential.
JOSHUA BOON
Commenced Karate 27/04/2007
Joshua has always given 100% to his
training. What he lacks in size he
makes up in heart. Jessica said that he
was the perfect student.
The participants who sparred the
black belts
Most people don’t realise it takes the
support of fellow club members to
make the black belt grading a success.
CHRISTOPHER HOUGHTON
Commenced Karate 16/04/1999
Christopher was an inspiration. The
men that fought him gave him a hard
time. He took it all in his stride. I have
always seen Chris as the quiet achiever.
Head down and always working hard.
Chris is the ideal role model for the
next generation. Thanks for being part
of Yoseikan-Ryu Karate.
Chris’s mum, Julie, was at the grading.
It is usually more difficult for parents
watching than students participating in
the grading. It was an emotional and
yet a proud time for Julie. After the
grading she came up and thanked me
and Yoseikan for what we have done
for her son. The pleasure was all ours.
TRACEY DURHAM
Commenced Karate 2/04/2004
Tracey came well prepared for the
grading. The general consensus from
the mature supporters was that her
performance was inspirational. It also
made our Mums realise that they will
have to work much harder than they
initially thought. Personally this was
the quietist I have ever seen Tracey.
The question is will it last?
MELISA HODZIC
Melisa does not give up easy. It was
obvious from the beginning of her
grading that she was going to pass. Her
16
determination was there for all to see.
In 1995 she was a teenager, now she is
a mature young lady who enjoys
giving Branco and Armando a hard
time. It is all in good fun.
BLACK
BELT
GRADING
By Cheryl
Morgan
I attended my
first adult black
belt grading on
Sunday 10 th
June 2012. I had a fair idea of how
tough it would be having been to a
number of junior black belt
gradings. What I didn’t appreciate
before I went was how personally
inspired and challenged I would
be. Tracey, Melisa and Chris had all
been training extremely hard in the
months leading up to the grading. I
couldn’t help but admire their focus
and commitment each week. But
nothing compares to what happens on
the big day. It is very difficult to
appreciate the level of fatigue in
completing 12 kata’s and over 120
techniques including speed techniques
without seeing it for yourself – and
then there is the fighting! A few of us
more mature women were a bit
nervous about the fighting and we
were only having the one bout – not
the 10 that the people grading were
going through. The fighting is more
about survival than anything else – to
keep going when you can barely stand
up and these people keep hitting and
kicking you. The mental and physical
challenge is evident to everyone
present. Tracey, Melisa and Chris were
amazing, you could see them digging
into reserves I’m sure they didn’t
know they had before the day. They
stood their ground and frequently gave
better than they got. For the very first
time, I personally believed that I
would be able to reach this level as
well. A black belt grading
encompasses what everything karate is
about – the technique, the fight, being
humble, being proud, being brave,
giving more than you knew you had –
and sharing it with people who
genuinely care about and support
you. An amazing experience!
