trAditiONs FrOM tHe ALUMni Center Mr. Casey Murphy By: Sarah Stewart ’12 In addition to the many new teachers this school year, our Chanel family is also happy to welcome the new Vice President for Advancement, Mr. Casey Murphy. Mr. Murphy is in charge of bringing in financial gifts and contributions to the school. He is responsible for building and maintaining relations with both alumni and donors who support St. Peter Chanel. His primary goal is to “bring in as much philanthropic support to the school as possible.” Mr. Murphy also helps with fundraising projects, such as the Benefit Auction and the Golf Tournament, and the recruitment and enrollment of students. He meets with school supporters approximately three days a week. Mr. Murphy is a native Clevelander, though he has spent the last five years in Phoenix, Arizona. He attended Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin High School in his youth. From there, he graduated from the University of Dayton with a B.A. in history. He then moved to Arizona where he worked at Bourgade Catholic High School as the school’s Advancement Director. His goals for the year include “to secure the future of St. Peter Chanel High School” and to “get to know as many people, faculty and staff as possible. MY dOOr is ALWAYs OPEN Mark Maslona, Director of Athletics Thank you so much for the opportunity to serve the St. Peter Chanel High School as Director of Athletics; and thank you also, for your support of Chanel athletics. It is this type of support, as well as many of Chanel’s other wonderful attributes: devoted alumni, talented teachers and coaches, outstanding facilities and the Catholic ideal, that makes Chanel such a special place to learn, work and grow. It is with immense pride I wish to inform you of some great news in our community. First, our wrestling coach, Mr. Graham Coghill, has been named Ohio High School Wrestling Coach of the Year. This tremendous honor also automatically nominates him for National Coach of the Year consideration. This type of recognition is so richly deserved by a man who has devoted his life to the service of Chanel and its students. Thank you so much for all you do, Coach Coghill! Also, our soccer team won the North Coast League, White Division, Championship this season. What a tremendous feat for a team that was 12 Excelsa Alumni CHilDREn Continue Tradition St. Peter Chanel is honored to see alumni kids in every class! Sons and daughters of alumni enrolled as current students carry on a tradition of excellence every day as they learn the values that are part of the Chanel tradition. This new generation of scholars carries on the tradition of academic excellence that has been Chanel’s hallmark since 1957. Also along the way, Andrew Bucur was named “Plain Dealer - Player of the Week” for his accomplishments during the first week of October. What a tremendous season for Coach Nick Urban and the entire team! Finally, our volleyball team, boys & girls cross-country teams, golf team and football team also enjoyed many successes this season. While it may not be totally reflected in win-loss records, each team displayed the heart, determination and class that personify what St. Peter Chanel High School is all about. Simply put and with all sincerity, I could not any prouder than I am of every one of these players and coaches! With this in mind, I want to invite everyone in the Chanel community to get excited, to participate and to remember – all of us are, now and always, ambassadors of St. Peter Chanel High School. Please send all information to: scott Gongos at sgongos@stpeterchanel.com or Jule Kennedy at jkennedy@stpeterchanel.com Class reunions held this past year The Class of 1961 – The Class of 1961 had a 40% turn-out with 34 graduates celebrating their 50th Reunion on September 23 & 24, 2011. The Friday evening event was held at Chanel with welcoming comments by Jack Hildebrand, 1961 Class President; a school update was provided by Sr. Maria Berlec, Chanel President/Principal; and a “Re-live Your Past Facility Tour” was conducted by Scott Gongos. A brief memorial service in honor of the 13 deceased classmates was lead by members of the Class of 1961, Fr. James McCafferty, S.M. and Br. David James Sarnecki. The Saturday evening event was held at a local hotel with a buffet dinner, dancing and a lot of reminiscing. The Class of 1971 – Held their 40 year reunion on November 1, 2011 with a Mass at Chanel with the entire Chanel community that was said in honor and tribute to the parents of their Class of 1971. The Class of 1981 – The Class of 1981 had their first reunion since graduating over 30 years ago, and a great time was had by all. On a beautiful Friday, August 19th the group gathered for a 2 hour cruise on the Good Time III, along the downtown Cleveland shores of Lake Erie. Afterwards, the group headed down to the Winking Lizard in Independence for a late night meal and libations. On Saturday, August 20th, the group gathered at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Independence, for a sit-down dinner and entertaining conversation. A special thank you to alumnus Michael Craig for coordinating the logistics for a very enjoyable weekend. The Class of 1991 – The Class of 1991 celebrated 20 years on the weekend of August 5th. Friday night was a meet and greet at Panini’s in Sagamore Hills. Saturday was a family day picnic at Walton Hills Lake. As a surprise to the attendees, we had former Chanel staff members in attendance – Joe Lynch, Fr. James Lacrosse, Roger Abood and Mark Cotleur. A special tribute was made to Kevin Patton who passed away a few years ago. It was good to catch-up. Although it was twenty years, it didn’t seem like that long once we all started chatting. However, looking at old photographs confirmed that we have all aged very well! We all found it rather amusing that our priorities had changed – ten years ago we were all going to do ‘this’ and ‘that’, now the chat was about children and all of their activities. We hope to have another reunion in 5 years. The Class of 2001 – Held their 10 year reunion the weekend of October 21, 22, and 23, 2011. Friday they attended the Chanel football game and then met at DePompei’s to reminisce. Saturday they all met at Dave & Busters with their families and in the evening they went to Cadillac Ranch for dinner. Sunday was a final to their fun filled weekend at Yours Truly for brunch.
