Dr. Andrew A. Sorensen:
President of the University of South Carolina
On December 14 at 2:00 pm, the University of South Carolina will install its twentyseventh
President, Dr. Andrew Sorensen. A native of Pittsburgh, Dr. Sorensen holds a
bachelor’s degree in ethics and master’s and doctoral degrees in medical sociology,
from Yale University as well as a B.A. in history from the
University of Illinois and a master of public health degree
from the University of Michigan. Dr. Sorensen
comes to USC having served as president of the University
of Alabama (1996-2002) and provost and vice
president for academic affairs at the University of
Florida (1990-1996). With his extensive experience in
higher education, he seems poised to lead the USC
System in its entirety.
From the outset of his arrival at USC, Dr. Sorensen has expressed his support for
all of the USC campuses, and according to Chancellor Hallman, has already assembled
the leaders of the non-Columbia campuses twice to discuss issues pertinent to each
campus. “I am very impressed with his command of the issues and his unwavering
commitment to do what is right,” says Dr. Tom Hallman. “I believe that Dr. Sorensen will
be a great leader for the entire University, and I look forward to working with him to
serve the students, faculty and staff members of this great institution.”
A Message from
the Chair...
We now approach
the end of another calendar
year and, if
you are anything like me, you are wondering
where all the time has gone. It
seems like just last week we were all
getting used to the hustle and bustle
of beginning a new academic year and
reminiscing about our summer vacations.
Obviously, our lives continue
to become busier and busier, both professionally
and personally, and it remains
our dubious task to create some
sort of balance between them both.
This holiday break I would hope that
everyone will find time to relax and
enjoy quality time with family and
friends. I would like to wish you and
all of your families a safe and healthy
holiday season, and I look forward to
working with everyone, refreshed, relaxed
and rejuvenated, when we return
in January. Sincerely,
Jeff Jenik, Chair
A Call for Suggestions
The Classified Employees Assembly
is many things: it’s a grapevine, a support
system, a community. In these tough
times, when money is tight and time is precious,
it is more important than ever to keep
staff morale high and participation in University
events constant. We ask all employees
to take advantage of their CEA membership
and help keep fellow staff members’
spirits high. If you have any suggestions
or comments on how to keep classified
employee participation in University
events high or how to make CEA’s presence
better felt on campus, feel free to
contact Jeff Jenik or any member of the
Advisory Committee. If you would like to
make announcements regarding special
interests or events here on campus, speak
up at CEA meetings. There is great power
in numbers, and the Classified Employees
Assembly can make great strides in improving
our work environment if everyone gets
involved.
