letter from the president and ceo
dear friends
of hStc,
over the years
the humane
society of the
treasure Coast
has grown
into our area’s
leading animal
resource center.
this has not
happened by
accident.
since 1955 we have been fortunate
to have so many visionary members of
our board of directors, staff, volunteers
and donors that contributed their ideas,
research, professional skills, time and
financial support to create the full service
humane society serving our community
today.
With progressive adoption programs
and no time limit on hope, the humane
society of the treasure Coast remains
the only totally open access shelter that
does not euthanize healthy adoptable
animals in our area. from Vero Beach
to Broward County, we are the only non
profit humane society that accepts all
dogs, cats and other domestic pets like
rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, regardless of
age and medical condition, breed, size or
temperament.
our spay/neuter programs were
responsible for over 3,000 surgeries this
past year. our new clinic and isolation
unit for shelter animals now provides
a place for high volume spay neuter
surgeries for owned animals, as well as a
treatment facility for animals in our care.
our humane education program and
pet therapy teams broke new ground
this year reaching a record number of
students and seniors in our community.
Wagging Tales is a quarterly newsletter published by the
humane society of the treasure Coast, inc., which is a notfor-profit
corporation that has acted as the exclusive provider of
companion animal sheltering and protection services in martin
County, fl for more than 50 years.
the good work of these dedicated
volunteers and staff members resulted
in our humane society being named a
united Way of martin County affiliated
agency. We also became one of the first
agencies selected for a Character Counts
grant from united Way. We are honored
to be part of the united Way family.
We continue to provide quality obedience
training classes, our agility classes and
club continues to grow, our thrift stores
have expanded and our offsite adoption
programs have resulted in hundreds of
animals finding loving homes. We also
provide humane euthanasia services so
all animals can have the dignified and
humane end they deserve.
our special events continue to grow and
every month on our event calendar there
is something for everyone to do with
their pets. our website continues to be
recognized for its content, and continues
to expand with more pictures, videos,
and interactive capabilities. and you can
follow us on facebook and twitter, or
download the new hStc app.
the response to our planned giving
newsletters has been humbling. so
many of you have told us about your
plans to leave the humane society in
your wills, and we are grateful that you
have chosen to honor the hstC as part
of your legacy.
as we enter this new year i would like to
thank all of you for making our humane
society what it is today, and i look
forward to working with you to make it
what it can become tomorrow!
Celebrating 10 Years!
MUTT MUT MUTT MUT
MARCH
Hurricane Sandy caused the Humane Society of the
Treasure Coast (HSTC) to delay its 10th annual Mutt
March by five hours, but the storm couldn’t dampen the
efforts of the volunteers and participants who turned
out in full at Memorial Park for the event, which was
presented by the Petco Foundation. The HSTC raised
almost $50,000 from the Oct. 27 event to benefit its
shelter animals. “We were pleased that so many supporters and their creatively
costumed dogs were able to participate in spite of the weather,” said Community Relations
Manager Jackie Ranaldo. “For anyone who could not attend, we are still encouraging donations
to help get us to our $50,000 goal as we are so close.” The top fundraiser was Teri
McLean, who won two nights at the Marriott Hutchinson Island Resort with a round of golf for two
and a hand bag from J. McLaughlin. Tabitha Fox placed second and won a Fur Seasons Basket that
included pet boarding and four tickets to the Pineapple Festival and Sailfish Splash Water Park. Third
place went to Milena Gifford, who won a large caldron basket filled with doggie goodies and toys.
Cavies & Co., which paid tribute to one of the HSTC’s most active volunteers – the late Linda Davis
– won the pack award, for raising the most money for a group. Hundreds of people brought
their furry friends dressed in colorful costumes. Mutt March founders Lori DesRuisseaux, Kay Ziegler
and Debra Duval and event sponsor Dr. Arvind Vakani judged the costume contest and gave awards for the
cutest, most unique, funniest and
best of show. The
in memory
linda’s devotion to animals began at the
age of five when she was introduced to
her pet lamb geranium, and it continued
throughout her life. she provided homes,
both permanent and temporary, for so
many animals over the years.
fifteen years ago linda began volunteering at
our humane society. she was in the original
group of volunteer dog walkers, and was
a Wednesday regular for years. linda then
joined the paws & Claws Committee where
there was no job too big or too small.
she eventually co-chaired the paws & Claws
gala in 2010. an extremely organized person
with great attention to detail, linda compiled
a 6 inch thick notebook that she handed on to
the next chair of the event to help manage the
transition in leadership for the event. in 2012,
in between chemo sessions, linda chaired
the silent auction for the paws & Claws gala.
linda was the consummate diplomat and
could work cheerfully with anyone.
linda was caring, loving, forgiving,
understanding, and she was so loyal to her
friends and the animals. one of the best
examples of her spirit centers on hurricane
Katrina. once the impact was known, five
hstC friends signed up as volunteers with
noah’s Wish, rented an rV, and drove to
new orleans.
Linda
H.
Davis
Forever a Friend of the Animals
recently the humane society of the treasure Coast and
the animals lost one of our great ambassadors and most
loyal friends, linda davis, to cancer. this tribute contains
thoughts and memories from many people who had the
privilege of spending time with linda over the years.
there were many
pleasant tasks, like
reuniting dogs with
their owners. But
there were many
more unpleasant
ones, like working
sun up to sun down
in make shift tents,
wearing knee pads
and masks, and
crawling in dog crates
armed with bottles
of bleach. you can
imagine the groaning
and moaning that
could have taken
place, but not
around linda!
she made sure there was laughter every night.
laughter lining up for community showers
at a local truck stop. laughter missing the
community dinner and having to dine on
popcorn. laughter driving home in an rV
filled with 11 dogs in need of new homes.
laughter losing the keys for the rV in the
trash can at Burger King. linda was there
for it all, and her laughter will be missed.
a member of the hstC Board of directors
for 8 years, linda served as secretary and
also chaired the shelter Committee. While
chair of the shelter Committee, linda and
her committee worked on shelter operation
policies and reviewed projects that would
benefit the shelter like on site rainbow Bridge
services, a surgical suite and clinic, and most
important to linda, an isolation unit for sick
shelter animals. all of these dreams have
been realized, with hstC dedicating the
new Clinic and isolation unit early in 2013.
linda played an integral role in developing
relationships with other organizations, our
volunteer program, and expanding offsite
adoption and spay neuter programs. she
was one of the finest ambassadors that the
humane society has ever known.
she was the kindest, most loving person to
all creatures, four legged and two legged.
the words “tenderness”, “thoughtfulness”,
“generosity”, “loyalty” all describe linda.
she made all events fun, and her personality
made everyone want to work with her. she
will be missed by all who were lucky enough
to know her.

many people have experienced the joys of bringing a pet into their
lives, but its ability to provide unconditional love and support goes
well beyond the boundaries of home.
the humane society of the treasure Coast provides many
opportunities for animals to give support through its ongoing humane
education programs. helen savill has been leading the humane
education department for the past 13 years. she and her dedicated
team of volunteers participate in a variety of programs.
for starters, volunteers known as “Misty’s pals” visit an average
of 450 residents a month at assisted living and full care nursing
communities. each month, volunteers and their certified pet therapy
dogs visit 13 locations.
the rewards go well beyond those who are visited by the pets. the
dogs’ owners also receive benefits. Just ask mary Christopher, whose
dog is featured on the cover of this Wagging tales issue.
she and her dog, Kate, a soft-coated wheaten terrier, are in their
second year of the program. Because of Kate’s temperament,
Christopher knew that her dog would be perfect for the pet therapy
program.
6 wagging tales | winter 2013
“Kate has such a sweet personality … she’s a kind soul,” said
Christopher.
she brought Kate into her home during a challenging time in her life
when she needed extra support and said her new furry friend helped
her recover. later, she took Kate to hospice, where her husband’s
mother was dying. Christopher noticed how much Kate enjoyed being
around people and how well they responded to her.
“i saw what a comfort she was,” said Christopher.
once she heard about the humane society’s pet therapy program,
she knew it would be a perfect fit. she and Kate went through the
required training for pet therapy. Kate has visited the Council on
aging’s Kane Center, elementary and pre schools, nursing homes and
has served as a greeter at the lyric theatre for shows such as Joel
slaven.
“i feel like she came to help me … it’s now expanded and she’s
helping other people, too,” said Christopher.
another hstC program is lessons in Kindness. these educational
programs are provided annually for approximately 2,000 students in
martin County public schools, private schools, with scout troops and
Boys and girls clubs.
communicating Safely with Our pets is an interactive hands-on
program that teaches children about safe behavior around animals.
By observing role-playing between humans and their pets, the
children learn about common animal behaviors, what the behaviors
mean and how to act around animals that demonstrate these
behaviors.
pet Suitcase is a hands-on lesson that teaches children what pets
need to be happy and healthy. the children take turns pulling items
out of the pet suitcase, identifying them and explaining why they
would make pets happy and healthy.
the hstC also has just been awarded a Character Counts mini-grant
from the united Way of martin County.
“it’s the first time they’ve awarded the grant to an agency that wasn’t
a school,” said savill. “that’s big.”
Volunteers and their certified pet therapy dogs will begin a pilot
program at palm City elementary this spring for second grade
students. they will use the dogs to emphasize the six pillars of
Character Counts: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness,
caring and citizenship.
“the addition of the six pillars to our lessons in Kindness
presentations is an accelerator in terms of the students’ ability to
understand the true scope of the lesson,” said savill. “the animals
will help guide the students to gain an understanding of how it is
wrong to treat animals with anything other than kindness. it becomes
infinitely easier to suggest that they carry that concept over into their
human relationships.”
relationships.”
there’s also a program called pawsitive interaction that provides a
therapeutic approach that brings animals and students with physical
and cognitive disabilities together at stuart middle school and sandy
pines hospital/riverbend academy.
“Our gOal is tO have Martin COunty be a
truly huMane COMMunity…i see that all
Of Our hard wOrk is Making that happen.
the humane education department also conducts shelter tours for
students, which includes a classroom component featuring certified
therapy pets. this interactive hands-on program provides students
with a clearer understanding about the business of sheltering
homeless pets. the students and the adults with them also learn
about the programs hstC provides to the community.
“they get to see first hand how an animal shelter functions,”
said savill. “if they’re interested in getting a pet, they now know
where to come. if they already have a pet, they leave with a better
understanding of how to be a responsible pet owner and how to
make their pet an integral part of their family.”
paws to read is a weekly literacy program that provides more than
2,000 half-hour reading sessions at the Blake library; Boys and girls
Clubs of hobe sound, port salerno, east stuart and palm City; south
fork high school ese classes; felix Williams elementary school;
murray middle school; and river Bend academy at sandy pines. this
breaks down to an average of 280 reading sessions per month.
Jeanne pierce has been volunteering with this program since its
inception in 2000. her dog, Jackson, a rottweiler-lab mix, was
literally the poster dog to promote the program. her husband, steve,
also volunteers and they both have seen the difference the program
makes in children’s lives.
“it’s wonderful,” said pierce. “i see the light in the children’s eyes
when they’re reading with the dogs.”
she has noticed that the students’ self-confidence and self-esteem
improves with this program. reading to the dogs helps to relax them
as well.
“as “ they’re patting the dog, they’re calming down, releasing
endorphins endorphins and they feel feel good,” said pierce. “dogs have a very
calming effect on the children and there are sometimes key words
in the story – such as squirrel, cookie or treat treat – that get the dog’s
attention. the dogs recognize the word and their ears perk up and the
kids smile.”
the t program is intended to teach children about pet responsibility
while giving them the confidence to read read out loud. loud.
“our goal is to have martin County be a truly humane community,”
said savill. “that was my goal 13 years ago and i see that all of our
hard work is making that happen.”
Life insurance!
many individuals have large, valuable life insurance policies that they purchased for purposes that no longer exist. the kids have grown up, the
business has been sold – but the policy remains. Cashing it in can have negative tax consequences, so why not make a gift of the policy to the
humane society of the treasure Coast?
life insurance allows donors with smaller assets to make large gifts, which can be used to name an area in your name, or a loved one’s name.
you might consider purchasing a life insurance policy that will pay proceeds to the humane society. By paying small premiums each year, you
can leverage your gift dramatically. also, don’t forget that you will typically get an income tax charitable deduction upon transferring the policy
to the humane society, and for any subsequent premium payments! how the deduction is calculated depends on the type of policy and each
of these techniques is subject to different federal tax and state law rules. our development manager can help you consult with your advisors to
determine if this might be the best type of gift for you.
Q. why have people used
life insurance policies as
part of their estate and
charitable giving plans?
o please contact me about using life insurance to help the animals at the humane society
o please send me more information about joining our Cherished friends Circle
in most cases, for a relatively small
or reasonable annual premium, you
can give what is sometimes called
an “amplified gift” because it can
provide for far more dollars in the
future than a donation today. many
people like to utilize life insurance
because it allows them to give a
larger gift without diluting other
assets or business. and, you can
benefit from tax advantages, as
well as contribute to the humane
society at the same time.
place completed form in an envelope and mail to:
Karen Bellucy, development Manager
humane society of the treasure Coast, inc.
4100 s.W. leighton farm avenue palm City, fl 34990
Q. should i consider
reviewing my policy?
70% of existing life insurance
policies are underperforming and
both the donor’s family and the
humane society of the treasure
Coast could benefit from a review
of existing life insurance policies.
extended periods of low interest rates
and new mortality costs reducing the
cost of life insurance have created
a favorable scenario for review of
existing policies.
there may be a number of benefits,
such as:
4 making sure that the policy is still
consistent with current tax law,
avoiding estate taxation of the
death benefit.
4potentially obtaining the same
coverage for a significantly lower
premium. (you can decide how
much of the savings you would
like for your family and how much
you would like to donate to the
humane society of the treasure
Coast).
4and, determining if there is
potentially a higher death benefit.
(if so, you decide how much of the
additional benefit to give to your
family and how much you would
like to donate to the humane
society of the treasure Coast).
Q.
phone: 772-600-3212
Email: kbellucy@hstc1.org
what’s the next step?
life insurance audits can be
complimentary and provide the
transparency needed to determine
how your policy is performing
and if benefit can be derived by a
replacement. the process does take
some time but can be well worth it
when a stagnant or ignored asset can
be turned into available dollars for
your family or to help the animals!
if you would like more information
about how to have your policy
reviewed or about using life
insurance as a gift to the humane
society, please call us. We will help
you engage your estate planning
professionals and work as a team.
you can reach Karen Bellucy at
the t humane society of the treasure Coast, inc. lost a very dear friend and
champion this past august 25, when Jeff Bateman, Vice president of tiffany & Co.
died of a sudden heart attack. attack. Jeff Jeff and i became friends years ago serving together
on on the palm Beach friends Board of the florida philharmonic orchestra. a real
georgia g gentleman, Jeff was a charmer with a great sense of humor. underneath
that that charm, was a sharp and shrewd businessman and civic leader. When i
asked Jeff to support our paws & Claws gala, Jeff did so, not only because of the
demographic base of our patrons, but also because he loved animals, animals, particularly
dogs. he adored his Boston terrier, “Bubba.” the relationship between tiffany
and the hstC grew over the years, with tiffany hosting annual luncheons at the
Jupiter
island Beach Club, where our pet therapy dogs mingled with ladies and
gorgeous gorgeous models wearing the very best of tiffany jewels. during our 50th season,
tiffany also contributed to our 50th anniversary Commemorative Journal “fifty
years: yyears:
an epic tail of devotion.” to this day, tiffany & Co. remains a loyal sponsor,
supporting our galas with generous contributions to the live auction held each year.
Jeff understood how important important the relationship is is between between people people and their pets. pets.
Jeff respected the difficult work that is inherent in being an an open admission
animal shelter. he also admired our loyal volunteers, knowing that those he saw
all dressed up at our luncheons and
galas, were the same people who rolled up
their shirt sleeves and worked alongside staff to care care for for the animals animals who need our
compassion compassion and support. Jeff was a contributor to to our our community, in all all the ways
that are important. We will miss him.
self-assurance.
At our office, your beautiful smile begins with a
thorough examination and precise assessment of your
oral health. Dr. Vakani always takes the time to explain
your treatment options, answer any questions, and
make sure you’re comfortable with your care.
From the moment you walk into one of our Smile
Centers, you’ll know you’ve come to the right place for
advanced Orthodontic care. Schedule your
