Iseke attended the Revitalizing Secondary Education
Network (SEN) Conference in Baltimore,
Maryland from October 15-18, 2011. In attendance
were representatives from seven School
Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) secondary
schools: Academy of the Holy Angels, Demarest,
N.J.; Institute of Notre Dame, Baltimore, Md.;
Instituto Notre Dame, El Progreso, Honduras;
Notre Dame Jogakuin High School, Kyoto, Japan;
Notre Dame High School, Talofofo, Guam;
Notre Dame High School, St. Louis, Mo.; and
Notre Dame Preparatory School, Baltimore, Md.
Jennifer Moran and Marianne Kempa, SSND,
NAMA Coordinator of Ministry Services, report
that the purpose of the conference was to
“continue strengthening the distinctive spirit and
power of influence of SSND education while
implementing the challenges issued by the
SSND Call to Solidarity, the SSND Directional
Statement of the 22nd General Chapter.” Call to
Solidarity encourages SSND institutions to “link

Notre Dame High School’s Class of 2012 celebrated
its Baccalaureate Mass on May 11 at the Cathedral-
Basilica and held its 43rd Commencement Ceremony
on May 12 at the Phoenix Center. Reverend
Monsignor David C. Quitugua presided over the
Mass and blessed the 71 graduates as they venture
into the global community.
Sister Jean Ann Crisostomo, SSND, President of
Notre Dame High School, and Principal Mariesha
Cruz-San Nicolas thanked the parents and guardians
for supporting and encouraging the graduates
throughout their academic career, and for their continued
support of Catholic education.

NDHS Representatives Attend SSND
SEN Conference in Maryland

Sponsored by the School Sisters of Notre Dame
Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges
ministries across the world [and to] collaborate with
others on all levels, sharing [in] charism and spirituality,”
according to Moran and Kempa.
The three-fold purpose of the meeting consisted of
providing input on the concept of building solidarity as
well as providing a format for sharing this concept;
discussing what the SEN looks like at this time in
history, and how to move SEN forward; and building
ownership of the SEN among the group. According
to Cruz-San Nicolas, “The educators present at this
conference are inspiring, full of energy, and committed
to the charism of Blessed Theresa Gerhardinger.”

for Royals! This issue
of our alumni
newsletter captures
events from the past
school year, and
touches on the
theme of being Globally
Concerned. As
one of the tenets of our ESLRs, Globally Concerned
Royals strive to:
Model human connectedness through
a commitment to the environment,
social justice, and peace;
Exhibit a sense of social responsibility
guided by compassion, confidence,
and integrity; and
Take responsibility for one’s actions
and the welfare of others.
Last September, the International Shalom Coordinator
for the School Sisters of Notre Dame
visited NDHS during the International Day of
Peace and shared inspirational words and experiences
with students and staff members. A
month later, our principal and fellow alumna,
Mariesha Cruz-San Nicolas ‘93, along with
Theology instructor and 2002 NDHS graduate
Hawley Iseke, connected with other SSND
schools at the Revitalizing Secondary Education
Network (SEN) Conference in Baltimore,
Maryland.
As we move into SY 2012-2013, Notre Dame
prepares for its upcoming Board of Directors
Installation. The Notre Dame family welcomes
the new nominees and the talent and experience
that their diverse backgrounds will add to
Notre Dame’s growing and global community.

NDHS Board of Directors
Installation Ceremony
As part of the Schoolwide Areas for Growth presented by the Accreditation Team
in 2011, Notre Dame High School (NDHS) will hold an Installation for the Board of
Directors on August 24, 2012. The Notre Dame community and special guests
from the Central Pacific Province will be in attendance for the installation of the
following six nominees:
Dolores “Loling” Field is a Notre Dame High School alumna from the class
of 1976, and a parent of a former Notre Dame student. As a member of the
business community, Ms. Field holds an Associates degree in Science from
the University of Guam, has a banking certificate from the Pacific Coast Banking
School, and has been in the banking industry for over twenty years. She is
the Vice President of Risk Management at the Bank of Guam, and is a member
of Soroptimist International of the Marianas. Ms. Field is also a member of
Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Church Committees.
Francine Perez, SSND is a School Sister of Notre Dame, and a former NDHS
Instructor. Sister Francine holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education, and a
master’s degree, coupled with credits from other areas of studies which account
for her well-rounded background. In addition to Notre Dame, Sister Francine
has also taught at St. Francis Catholic School, San Vicente Catholic
School, and was once the principal of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic
School in Agat. She has been a Postulant and Novice Formator; Regional
Leader; General Councilor for the SSND International congregation; and her
present ministry is coordinating retreat activities at Carmel-on-the-Hill Retreat
Center in Malojloj.
Jacqueline Taitano Terlaje, Esq. is an NDHS alumna and salutatorian of the
class of 1992. Ms. Terlaje graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. from
Chaminade University. She received her J.D. from the University of Washington.
She is a member of the Guam Bar Association, a member of the Professional
Ethics and Unauthorized Practice of Law, and served as Notre Dame’s
Board of Directors Chairperson from 2009-2011.
Mary Beth Lizama is an NDHS alumna from the class of 1979 and a current
parent of an NDHS student. Ms. Lizama has a B.A. from the University of
Guam, is the Executive Vice President of MCB, Inc., the president of the
NDHS Parent-Alumni Advisory Board, and currently serves as secretary for
Notre Dame’s Board of Directors. She is also the Executive Director for Junior
Achievement Guam.
Shawn Gumataotao is a current parent of two NDHS students. Mr. Gumataotao
has a B.A. from California State University, Bakersfield. He is the account
executive for the Federal Government at Johnson Controls, Inc., the Deputy
Chief of Staff at the Office of the Governor of Guam, a board member of the
Rotary Club of Guam, and also a member of the Chamber of Commerce.
Vicente S. Taitague is the Mayor of Talofofo and is involved in village/
community planning as a member of the Mayors’ Council of Guam. He has
been the Mayor of Talofofo from 1997– 2001, and 2009 – present. Mayor Taitague
is also an instrumental member of Notre Dame High School’s Facilities
sub-committee of the Strategic Planning Committee.

Students Commemorate the International Day
of Peace

In preparation for last year’s International Day of Peace, Notre Dame received
a special visitor on Thursday, September 15, 2011. Sister Roxanne
Schares, the International Shalom Coordinator for the School Sisters of
Notre Dame, spoke with students about the mission of the Shalom International
Network. Sister Roxanne, who is currently based in Rome, Italy, explained
the commitment that Shalom makes to the global community by
“being an instrument of hope, formation, and action for authentic living of
solidarity.” Sister Roxanne also encouraged students to be active participants
in their community because it is not only a requirement of our faith,
but also because as individuals, “our voice makes a difference; each one of
us makes a difference – especially when we join together.” According to
Sister Roxanne, “action on behalf of justice is integral to living the gospel.”
As the International Shalom Coordinator, S. Roxanne works for justice,
peace, and the integrity of creation around the globe, and she encourages
and motivates people and communities to take action and be a part of the
solution toward a “positive systemic change in society.”

Sister Roxanne shares her mission with employee, and Notre
Dame alumna, Mariana Roth ‘03.
Following Sister Roxanne’s visit, on Thursday, September 22, 2011, in commemoration of the International
Day of Peace, the Notre Dame community held a Shalom Peace Prayer Service that began the
day’s activities. Students gathered in the gymnasium for the prayer service as images of 9/11 were
displayed from an overhead projector. Banners with themes of peace, love and forgiveness, as well as
rings of peace, which were linked together with students’ names to symbolize solidarity and harmony,
were created by the Theology classes and the newly formed Shalom Club. The most significant moment
of the assembly was when senior, Shirae Fejeran, spoke to her classmates, faculty, and staff,
about her father who lost his life in 2006 while on deployment in the Horn of Africa. Shirae’s father
served in the United States Army National Guard and died in the line of duty while protecting the peace.
Shirae shared beautiful and heartfelt memories about her father, and the work he did while in Africa.
Students were moved by both Sister Roxanne’s experience as well as Shirae’s personal testimony
about the value and necessity of peace. Sister Roxanne’s visit and the activities of the International
Day of Peace initiated the establishment of Notre Dame’s first Shalom Club. The Shalom Club’s advisor
and Notre Dame Theology instructor, Hawley Iseke ‘02, says that the Shalom Club of Notre Dame
strives to create awareness of the different local, national, and international issues in which peace will
offer the best solution.

Mobil Oil Guam Inc.
Donates to NDHS
On November 4, 2011, Mobil Oil Guam Inc. presented Notre
Dame High School with a check in the amount of $2,000.00.
Mobil Oil Guam’s contribution will go toward Notre Dame’s
Capital Improvements Fund, which provides additional funding
for a new chemistry lab and upgrades that align Notre Dame’s
curriculum with 21st Century learning and technology. Mobil Oil
Guam’s generous donation supports Notre Dame in its mission
to “prepare students for college and lifelong learning that encourages
collaboration, instills leadership, promotes dedication
to service, and inspires passion for justice and peace in the
spirit of Jesus Christ.”

Royal Brunch
Notre Dame High School’s Parent-Alumni Advisory Board sponsored
a Royal Brunch at Sea Grill Restaurant on November 6,
2011. The second successful Royal Brunch consisted of musical
entertainment by recent Notre Dame graduates from the
Class of 2011, a Krystal Kollection fashion show, and student
artwork that was on display courtesy of Mr. John Shook and his
art classes. All proceeds from the Royal Brunch will purchase a
new scoreboard for Notre Dame’s gymnasium.

Louise “Lysa” Pocaigue Raras, from
the Notre Dame Class of 1981, was
called to rest on May 1, 2012. Last
Respects for Lysa were held on Saturday,
May 12th at the family residence
in Dededo and Mass for a Christian
burial was offered at Santa Barbara
Catholic Church. Lysa was laid to rest
at the Guam Memorial Park Cemetery in Leyang Barrigada.
She is survived by her children Jaebrielle, Juleiana, Javauni,
Jadrienne and Jai; her granddaughters Jaeya Raras and
Taylor Toves; and her father Antonio Blas Pocaigue.
