The Sect of the Thirty<br />

The original manuscript may be consulted in<br />

the library at the University of Leyden; it is in<br />

Latin, but its occasional Hellenism justifies the<br />

conjecture that it may be a translation from the<br />

Greek. According to Leisegang, it dates from<br />

the fourth century of the Christian era; Gibbon<br />

mentions it, in passing, in one of his notes to<br />

the fifteenth chapter of The Decline and Fall.<br />

These are the words of its anonymous author:<br />

...The Sect was never large, but now its<br />

followers are few indeed. Their number<br />

decimated by sword and fire, they sleep by the<br />

side of the road or in the ruins spared them by<br />

war, as they are forbidden to build dwellings.<br />

They often go about naked. The events my pen<br />

describes are known to all men; my purpose<br />

here is to leave a record of that which has been<br />

given me to discover about their doctrine and
