Kiku Steakhouse Of Japan Celebrates 20 Years Of Serving Topeka
“We’ve been serving the Topeka
area for over 20 years and business
keeps getting better every year,”
says the manager of Kiku Steakhouse
Of Japan, located in the
Fairlawn Plaza Mall. “We have also
added two additional locations...
“We appreciate our many loyal
customers for supporting a locallyowned
business. That’s why we offer
great service, prepare only the freshest
food, hire the finest local chefs
and keep our restaurants clean and
up-to-date.
“We are constantly upgrading and
remodeling to keep our customers
happy. Of course the big ‘draw’ to
Kiku’s has always been the variety
and freshness of our food. We take
extreme pride in serving only Choice
cut meat that is vacuum-packaged
and never frozen, and we age it just
the right amount of time before serving.
Quality is a must in our business.
“Customers are seated at a long
Teppanyaki table and the food is
prepared fresh, right in front of
them, by an entertaining chef who
always has guests clapping and calling
“Sushi has become more and more
popular in the Midwest and our expanded
Sushi Bar meets the demand.
Sushi dinners include an appetizer,
miso soup and dessert. Customers
may order single items (two-to-eight
pieces per order) or they may want
to try one of our sampler appetizers.
like trying the raw fish, we have over
ten items on the menu that are
For The Love Of Home
Draperies by Dorothy opened its
doors in Topeka in 1967 in Huntington
Park. In 1971, the shop moved to 1215
SW Gage Blvd. and has been there to
this day.
“Our founder, Dorothy Kaiser, passed
on to a different world in 2000 at the age
of almost 92,” relates Kay Kindall,
Dorothy’s daughter. “I’d begun helping
in 1990 and bought the shop from mother
in 1992. Even though callers still ask
for ‘Dorothy,’ they’ll instead talk to
either Sherry, Joyce, Kelly or me.
“What has never changed with our
shop is the determination to put heart
“Great food and entertainment
are just a couple of the reasons
Kiku’s is such a popular place for
parties. We help people celebrate
birthdays, anniversaries, weddings,
family gatherings and, of
course, holidays. Our goal is for
everyone to be happy and satisfied
at the party’s end.
“We recommend people book
their holiday parties as soon as
possible. We want to be able to
accommodate everyone...but if
they delay calling us they may not
be able to get their desired date.
“Kiku’s has two private dining
rooms that are perfect for any
gathering. The smaller room seats
16 people comfortably and the
larger one will accommodate up to
40 people.
“Of course, people needn’t wait
for a special occasion to enjoy
“We are blessed with being a busy
small business in these changing times.
Dorothy of Oz got swept away by a tornado.
Many of our friends in the South
recently had to leave their homes due to
different storms. Dorothy of Oz helped
herself, as well as others, to find heart,
head and courage. By facing the wizard
head-on, that giant called ‘fear’ melted
down to a size that could be dealt with.
“As Kansans in the Emerald City of
Topeka, may we continue to work to
enrich our homes as well as those of others.
If that includes window treatments,
come see us. If not, follow that Yellow
“We’ve just completed our interior
up-dating and remodeling, and are
currently finishing up with beautiful
new landscaping in front,” says
Peggy Klausman, manager of the
retirement facility. “We’ve added
many wonderful amenities our residents
and carpeting throughout, and decorative
accents such as dark oak pillars
and an impressive stone wall and
beautiful new chandeliers in the dining
area. We also have new dining
room chairs, and the comfortable new
sofas and leather recliners in the parlor
“Our goal is to keep acquiring
spectacular new work by outstanding
artists and photographers for our
customers,” says Ron Koerperich,
owner of Artist Collection &
Custom Framing. “We’re currently
featuring the landscape photography
of John Morrison, from Wichita. His
evocative images of Kansas are
incredibly detailed...with special
emphasis on the Flint Hills and the
tallgrass prairie. Pictured here is
‘Big Bluestem,’ which is a limited
edition of 200. John will be the featured
artist for the First Friday
Holiday Art Walk on Nov. 7th. Come
and meet him at the reception!
“We carry fine quality limited edition
and open edition prints and
posters—over 3,000 unframed
prints and over 600 framed pieces!
We’re thrilled to have the new
Democrat ‘True Blue’ and Republican
‘The Grand Old Gang’ prints
by Andy Thomas. Each print depicts
a gathering of famous presidents
from the past and present...youthful,
happy, and enjoying each other’s
company in a rousing game of cards.
“Unlike ‘online’ art, here people
can see ‘hands on’ the true colors and
entry, kitchens and bathrooms...
beautiful oak kitchen cabinetry,
new bath vanities and new lights
and ceiling fans in the bedrooms.
“We have studio, one, and twobedroom
apartments. Each apartment
has a full kitchen—however
delicious breakfasts and noon
meals are served daily in our spacious
dining room. Other amenities
are: A full laundry room (free
to residents), an on-site beauty
shop, scheduled transportation, biweekly
housekeeping and linen
services, extra storage lockers,
cable TV, safety-designed bathrooms,
extra soundproofing and convenient
parking.
“We’re truly like one big family.
Our facility is ‘home’ to 63 independent
apartments. Here, people can
enjoy an independent lifestyle, without
the burden of home maintenance
and the isolation of living alone. We
offer security and a ‘neighborhood’
attitude where people can maintain
their own unique way of life, yet
have the chance to enjoy plenty of
activities if they care to join in.”
“We provide a lot of opportunities
for FUN,” adds Rhonda Botsford,
Activities Director. “Throughout the
year we coordinate lots of events,
some great entertainment and many
exciting and educational day-trips.
beauty of a piece. What’s more, customers
can be assured of quality
framing. I have over 20 years and
Tracy, my assistant, has eight years
of experience in this industry.”
Ron is known, too, for his creativity
and experience in shadowboxing
items. Trust him to create a very
personal and treasured gift for anyone
in the family.
The store is an active participant
in Topeka’s First Friday Art Walks,
and also features original art from
several nationally known and local
artists: Sherrie Dick, Linda Daniels,
Mary Bauer and Joy Broe.
‘happy hour,’ and recently held a
wine & cheese party. Mondays and
Wednesdays are game nights, with
cards games of all kinds, Bunco,
Dominoes, Scrabble, etc.!
“We’ve also added big display
cases in our front hall where residents
can show off their collections
on a monthly basis. We’ve seen collections
of bubble gum machines,
tea pots, lady head vases, M & M
and Mickey Mouse artifacts, angels,
antique cameras...and our popular
KU vs K-State display put together
by four residents and their families.
“Everyone stays informed about
what’s going on through our newsletter
and monthly calender of
events. There’s never a dull moment
for those who wish to participate.”
Peggy and Rhonda invite you,
“The Center For Manual
Medicine is a unique facility dedicated
to the non-surgical treatment of
musculo-skeletal problems,” says Dr.
Mark Penn. “Dr. Doug Frye and I
have worked together for over 10
years, combining the philosophies
and methods of traditional medical
and chiropractic care to help our
patients experience pain-free movement
of muscles and joints.
“Both Dr. Frye and I use hands on
or ‘manual’ methods to improve
movement. Techniques may focus on
the joints or the surrounding soft tissues
including ligaments, muscles,
and tendons. Medications and local
injections are added when needed.”
“Perhaps the most important form
of treatment involves helping our
patients learn new ways to help
themselves,” says Seth Harrison,
CSCS, rehabilitation therapist.
“Vincent DiGiovanni, MS, Ragan
Willmann, BA, and I recently completed
training on Total Motion
Release (TMR). The TMR approach
is designed to allow the patient to discover
the patterns that cause his/her
pain. Then they are taught a simple
five-step process on how to take control
of their own pain and their own
treatment. Our patients love it
because as they are doing their home
program, they can determine for
(L-R) Doug Frye, MD, & Mark Penn, DC
themselves what is working, when it
is working, and what to do if it is not
working. TMR empowers patients
and gives them a process to help
themselves.”
“We have recently begun implementing
ultrasound for diagnostic
use and guided injections,” says Dr.
Frye. “Ultrasound enables us to give
an accurate diagnosis and helps us
guide the injection needle to the correct
target area, which provides much
better results for patients. I believe
we are the only office offering this
specific service in the Topeka area.
“Local injections can be helpful to
treat musculoskeletal conditions
including tendonitis, bursitis, arthritis,
capsulitis, and fasciitis.
“Cortisone injections are used for:
• Shoulder Tendonitis/Arthritis
• Tennis/Golfer’s Elbow
• Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
• DeQuervain’s Tenosynovitis
• Trigger Finger/Arthritis
• Ankle/Foot Tendonitis
• Plantar Fasciitis
“Research published in the British
Medical Journal has shown that the
combination treatments of spinal
manipulation and exercise therapy
produced superior outcomes for
back pain sufferers compared to
spinal manipulation or exercise
therapy alone.”
“Our Center believes in nutritional
supplements as part of our treatment,”
says Vincent DiGiovanni who
has a Masters degree in nutrition.
“We’ve decided to offer our patients
and everyone reading this article,
nutritional supplements at our cost
and the highest quality supplements.”
S-t-r-e-t-c-h Your Budget With Winter
Clothes From Mommy and Me
“We have a great selection of
Fall and Winter clothes at tremendous
savings,” relates Karen
Shaffer, owner of the upscale
resale store Mommy and Me.
“We have lots and lots of warm
sweaters, jackets and winter
coats...and, on Saturday, October
18th we’ll be putting out our holiday
items such as party dresses
and boys’ dress-up clothes. This
is the place to shop for anyone
who wants to outfit their kids in
style and stretch their budget at
the same time. Here, brands such as
Gap, Old Navy, Gymboree, Limited
Two and Abercrombie are about 1/3
the cost of retail. For instance, a
pair of $25 (retail) children’s jeans
sell for around $8-to-$9 here!
“We also have many items people
might not think about checking
here first for such as: Tuxedos for
little boys up to size 10 (priced
under $50), white Flower Girl
dresses, white Baptismal wear for
boys and girls, and a good selection
of children’s tap and ballet shoes.
“We carry children’s sizes from
newborn to size 16 for girls and
boys, plus all sizes of maternity
wear, a large selection of baby
equipment, and new gift items.
Ad Astra Per Aspera — “To The Stars Through Difficulties”
Ad Astra Per Aspera
by Rick Crawford
“I was talking with a colleague the
other day, discussing the current
state of the financial markets, when I
thought of the Kansas motto, Ad
Astra per Aspera. ‘To the stars
through difficulties’ is the English
translation, though the Latin sounds
more poetic.
“When I was a High School kid in
Chanute, I knew the motto, but it
didn’t inspire me. I thought it
referred to the struggles of the pioneers,
which it did, but I didn’t see
the relevance in my life. Many years
and many ‘difficulties’ later, it’s a
motto I believe in.
“Like many ‘boomers’ I’ve seen our
country experience a lot of strife: the
assassination of a President, a long,
unpopular war in Vietnam, a struggle
for civil rights, double digit inflation,
the cold war, ‘Black Monday,’ the
Dot-com collapse, 9-11, and the war
in Afghanistan and Iraq.
“The stars on the other side of these
difficulties include: improved civil
rights for minorities and women, a
diminished nuclear threat, and
unprecedented prosperity.
“Our current troubles include a
bear market and recent failures of
such venerable institutions as Bear
Part of the Mommy and Me team
we’re the largest children’s resale
store in northeast Kansas! We also
continue to be a resource for parents
regarding current child safety information
on government recalls pertaining
to children’s products.”
Mommy and Me is located on the
southwest corner of 37th and Burlingame
Rd., in the Burlingame Crossing
strip mall. (They were previously
located, for 17 years, in Shawnee
Plaza on SE 29th.)
Mommy and Me’s inventory is
purchased from customers who are
paid immediately with cash or store
credit. For full details on buying
days and requirements, as well as
store hours, call them at 785-266-
Stearns and Lehman Brothers, and
the federal takeover of Freddie Mac
and Fannie Mae. What are the stars
on the other side of these difficulties?
“I don’t know what those stars may
be, but I do know that those who plan
and save for their future can have
brighter stars. Whatever your financial
goals...saving and investing for
retirement...helping your children or
grandchildren with college expenses...providing
for your family in the
event of your death, or...minimizing
your income or estate taxes—
Rick Crawford, Financial Advisor
my experience can help your stars
shine brighter. People who have a
financial plan and prioritize their
goals are much more likely to reach
their goals than those who do not
plan.
“I distinguish myself with quality
service to my customers. I am available
to discuss the issues that concern
you when you are anxious
about any financial matter. My cell
phone is on my business card and I
do return all calls. Call me to set up
a free, no obligation, consultation.
Let me earn your trust with my dedication
to your success.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do you picture yourself owning a
new home, starting a business, or
retiring comfortably? These are
only a few of the financial goals that
may be important to you, and each
comes, of course, with a price tag
attached.
That’s where financial planning
comes in...it’s a process that can
help you reach your goals by evaluating
your whole financial picture,
then outlining strategies that are tailored
to your individual needs and
available resources.
A comprehensive financial plan
serves as a framework for organizing
the pieces of your financial picture.
You’ll be better able to focus
Ad Astra per Aspera - “To The Stars
Through Difficulties” was adopted
as the state motto in 1861.
on your financial goals and understand
what it will take to reach
them. It can also help you balance
competing financial priorities...
you’ll be able to see how your
financial goals are related. For
example: how saving for your children’s
college education might
impact your ability to save for
retirement. When you have all the
information, you can decide how to
prioritize your goals, implement
specific strategies, and choose suitable
products or services. Best of
all, you’ll have the confidence that
comes from knowing that your
financial life is on track.
Investing. With a plan. ®
Let Jan Make Your Home Picture-Perfect
For The Holidays
“Whether decorating for the holidays
in traditional Currier & Ives
fashion or in the most minimally
modernist manner, there are always
creative ways to take it up a notch or
two,” says Jan Davis of Jan Davis
Interiors. “This year (from now
through mid-December) Hunter
Douglas makes it easier to do so
with significant rebate savings on a
wide selection of their newest and
most stylish window fashions...$25
to $100 rebate per window!
“Here are just a few tips on ways
to make homes festive and welcoming
for holiday celebrations, while
enjoying those beautiful holiday
rebates: • In the dining room, dress
up chairs by attaching gold tassels
to the four corners of a festive towel
and drape it over the seat. • Hang
ornaments from the chandelier and
fill a lovely vase with cranberries
and fresh-cut flowers. • For warm,
diffused holiday light, select
Silhouette ® window shadings for the
windows. With this treatment, soft
fabric vanes suspended between
sheer panels not only soften and diffuse
the light, they allow you to tilt
the vanes closed for privacy. • In the
living room or great room, use wide
ribbon to ‘gift wrap’ throw pillows
like packages to give your couches
“I’m not the usual Center For
Nutrition patient,” states Heather
Wheeler. “I’m a ‘re-start person.’
Years ago I’d lost a lot of weight on a
program from Dr. Tague...however, I
didn’t stick with it to my goal. Also, I
continually ‘Heatherized’ the program.
I thought I could reach my goal
on my own, but I was wrong. Then,
when I had a lot of stress occur in my
life, I became so depressed and blue I
began ‘eating for comfort’ and just
continued to put the weight back on.
“With that extra poundage, I started
to really worry about myself. I was in
constant pain and felt miserable. The
veins in my legs hurt and were
bulging, and I could hardly climb the
stairs. I was so embarrased the day I
couldn’t fit into a theatre seat to enjoy
a movie with the rest of my family!
“That’s all behind me now. I went
back to Dr. Tague to ‘re-start’ and this
time I vowed to do it Dr. Tague’s way.
“I weighed 277 when I began. When
I stayed on the program Dr. Tague tailored
to my needs, I lost weight
quickly and easily. And, I was never
hungry. Their nutritional supplements
are really delicious. I love the Ready
to Drink Chocolate Shakes (I freeze
them until they’re frosty) and the new
Meal Replacement Bars are excellent.
“I finally understand that this is a
medical issue. It’s a lifestyle that is
a festive feel. • At the windows,
choose one of the many colors and
textures available in a product like
Hunter Douglas Pirouette ® window
shadings. While they have the rich
look of a hobbled Roman shade, this
treatment’s soft horizontal fabric
vanes are attached to a sheer backing
and open for an enhanced view and
gentle light filtration.
“I’m a ‘Preferred Hunter Douglas
Dealer’ and I love their great quality
products and excellent service.
learned that food doesn’t have to hold
you hostage...and I can’t begin to
explain how wonderful it feels. Life
is much easier when you’re
not having to drag an extra
100 pounds around with you!
and lifting weights
to keep my body toned, and
I am on the Center’s ‘maintenance
Do Your 2008 Year End Planning Now
You’ve made it two-thirds of the
way through 2008 and now it’s time
to start minimizing the tax hit coming
your way on April 15, 2009!
“Luckily, there have been some
changes in 2008 that bode well for
some of us,” explains Robert
Holmes, CPA, PFS, and owner of
Holmes & Associates Chartered.
“The question of whether someone
will owe money on April 15 starts
with taxable income: the higher it is,
the more tax you pay, right? If you
said ‘yes,’ you might be wrong.
Several types of income are taxed at
different rates: ordinary, capital
gains and qualifying dividends.
“Ordinary income is the income
that can be taxed anywhere from
10% to 35%. This includes wages,
interest income, pension, alimony,
business and many other forms of
income. Those with self-employment
income from a partnership or
sole proprietorship not only have to
pay income tax, but also selfemployment
tax.
“Capital gains are generated by
selling or exchanging certain assets
held for more than one year. Stocks,
bonds, real estate and other ‘capital’
assets held greater than one year are
taxed at 15% if your ordinary tax rate
is 25% or more. If it’s 15% or below,
the capital gains tax rate is 0%.
“Cold weather is just around the
corner and we’ll be closing up our
houses and turning on the heat,” says
Dale Basel, President of Bob’s
Janitorial. “Have we ever given any
thought to ‘what’ we are breathing
once our houses are closed up tight?
Even the tidiest homemaker is likely
to have microscopic organisms such
as mold and germs floating around in
the air in her home. Why? No matter
how clean the house is kept, unless
the air ducts and vents are cleaned,
contaminants get into, and circulate
through the home through the heating
and cooling system.
“Dirty air ducts
and vents contain
bacteria, mold,
fungus or dander,
and other pollutants.
The ducts
then carry those
impurities right
into the air the
family breathes
every day. We
have all heard of
the dangers of
mold and mildew
and the breathing
difficulties associated
with them.
“To make sure
everyone stays
healthy, AC ducts
and air vents
should be professionally
cleaned.
Some estimates
put the percentage
of illnesses
by contaminants
Martial Arts Can Benefit All Ages
“Our adult classes
teach lessons in mindfulness
that show the
connection of practice
with one’s day-to-day
life,” explains Midwest
Martial Arts’ owner,
Ronnie Moore. “I’ve
introduced one of my
students, Ron Bacon, to
techniques of introspection,
contemplation and
tempered breathing.”
“When I was younger, I
was very active and lifted weights,”
says Ron Bacon. “When I decided
not to lift as many weights, I needed
to find something to keep me active.
I had studied Shotokan years ago but
had never achieved my goals. I decided
that it is never too late to study
martial arts. My son, who is a body
builder and fitness instructor, encouraged
me to ‘go for it.’
“I’d heard of Mr. Moore and how
good he was with the youth...but I
had never met him. I decided to
observe him in a class, and I was
very impressed with his soft spoken
method of teaching the youth
respect for others. I decided that this
was the place for me.
“I started classes in February and I
have my mind set to work my way
to the top. I’m in my 60’s, but I
in the air as high as 50%! It simply
makes sense to have air ducts and
vents cleaned in all homes and
offices.”
Bob’s Janitorial will also clean
your heating and air systems—
they’ll run better, last longer and
save on energy use. It will not only
improve your environment...you’ll
also save money on energy costs.
“Many people are preparing for the
holidays and want their homes to
look as good and clean as possible,”
says Dale. “In order to keep an
expensive carpet looking its best,
vacuuming is just not enough.
Carpets should be deep cleaned on a
regular basis, as they can literally
Ron Bacon
know I can achieve the
black belt. My goal is to
become an instructor.
“Mr Moore has spent a
lot of one-on-one time
with me and has been
very patient. We meet
three times a week and I
stretch and practice at
home. I am very happy
with what I have accomplished
in such a short
time. I hope I am an
example to others who
are in my age group. It’s never too
late to set new goals.”
states Julie Clanton, store owner.
“Our huge array of gadgets includes:
Janelle Bueltel Leads Catering At Boss Hawg’s
After ten years in service to
Topeka’s most popular barbeque
eatery as a server and manager,
Janelle Bueltel has lately been found
running the catering desk at Boss
Hawg’s.
It’s a natural step for Bueltel, as
she takes her ten years of skill and
experience in making Boss Hawg’s
restaurant guests happy, and brings it
to the clients of Boss Hawg’s
Catering.
Catering has always been the cornerstone
of Boss Hawg’s, and the
entire company began, simply
enough as a home-based catering
service. The tiny business grew as
demand did, and the catering (as
well as the restaurant it inspired)
thrived unabated until the unexpected
death of owner Hank Lumpkin in
2003, leaving his widow Elizabeth
struggling to run the business alone.
“Catering hasn’t gotten the attention
it deserved since Hank died and my
focus was drawn to the running of the
overall company,” says Elizabeth. “It
has been wonderful to have Janelle
roll up her sleeves and and return our
catering department to the level of
service and professionalism that put
us on the map originally.”
While Elizabeth and Hank shared
the running of the company for
years, and worked together taking
catering calls and insuring the timeliness
of delivery and professional
handling of clients’ needs, the death
of her husband and business partner
meant that Elizabeth was no longer
on the front lines of the catering
department.
“It was a terrible shock when Hank
died, and I didn’t cope very well.
Without an owner detailing every
aspect of catering, clients had to
have felt the loss as well,” says
Elizabeth. “Having Janelle running
catering has brought that owner
mentality back to the catering
department.”
Watching Janelle on a busy day as
the catering calls come in unabated
is truly educational. She juggles
multiple phone lines and numerous
client calls with the expertise of an
experienced executive secretary;
runs last minute changes to Chef Bill
Fuscino in the kitchen to make sure
the clients’ orders are conveyed
accurately; checks in with the staff
packing the order and loading it into
one of the signature pink vans; and
often goes out on caterings herself,
checking in with clients in person to
be sure they are delighted with the
food and service they are getting.
“Without Elizabeth and Hank here,
I knew timeliness of delivery and
accuracy of catering orders had to
beginning of the company, I
was very familiar with the dedication
they both had to the
catering clients, and how tirelessly
they both worked to serve
them.
“Elizabeth used to say the
catering clients were what made
Boss Hawg’s. She used to say,
‘dance with the one that brung
ya’ in reference to our catering
clients.”
Elizabeth adds, “Catering
clients are responsible for the
very existence of Boss
Hawg’s, and Janelle was here
when it all started. That makes
it apropos, somehow, that she would
eventually lead our most critical
department and serve our most
deserving constituency.”
An exciting addition Janelle has
initiated is direct management of inhouse
banquets at Boss Hawg’s.
“We have a great private loft for
banquets and parties,” says Janelle,
“but the restaurant managers who
were handling banquets were being
pulled in so many directions. I felt it
was important to give each banquet
client the same attention as the
catering clients. So I made banquets
my job too!”
Via’s Pizzeria—Pizza...Redefined
Have you discovered Via’s
Pizzeria yet? If no, then get yourself
over to 738 SW Gage soon and
experience pizza redefined!
“While my husband, Jeff, and I
were enjoying some wonderful pizza
in a Pizzeria in Omaha last spring I
said, ‘Why doesn’t anyone offer this
in Topeka?’ ” shares Jessica Schell.
“That was the catalyst!
“Jeff had 15 years experience in
the restaurant business, managing a
local steak house for the last five. I
was in computer programming and
ready for a change. SO...we started
experimenting with dough and had
at least 25 different sauce recipes
we worked on. When we finally had
the taste and consistency perfected,
we went to a friend, Kent Bigham,
(who had started Glory Days years
ago) to have him give us his valued
opinion. One bite of our pizza and
he said, ‘Go for it!’ That is what led
us to start our own business!
“Our hand-tossed dough is made
from scratch in our own kitchen
along with our special sauce made
fresh, with ten different ingredients.
Our unique blend of seasoning and
stone baking technique has people
coming back again and again. We
constantly get comments on our
wheat crust...made from real whole
wheat, it’s flavorful and delicious.
individual investors whose investment
renters who are looking for a chance
to own their own home. By getting
others within the community
involved, we are able to help renters
buy a home through a “Rent To
been turned down by banks and
mortgage brokers in the past.
“Our Proffondo Chicago pizza has
people raving. We’re the only place
Chicago-style deep dish pizza with
fresh seasoned dough...smothered in
three different cheeses, three meats,
or veggies of choice. We add another
thin layer of dough and top it with
our special homemade sauce! Our
L’Opera and Tutto Carne pizzas are
next in line as customer favorites.
Mathnasium Makes Math Make Sense
“Mathnasium is a learning center
where students can go after school
to boost their math skills,” says
Anita Tobaben, Assistant Director
of Mathnasium of Topeka, located
at 4005 SW 29th. “We are highly
specialized—we only teach math.
“Our program is for grades two
through twelve. Students attend two
to three times a week for 60 to 90
minutes. Just like at a gymnasium,
members can attend based on their
personal schedules.
“Our goal is to enhance a child’s
math skills, enhance their understanding
of math concepts and improve
overall school performance. At
the same time, we’re helping each
student build self-confidence, which
yields overwhelming results.”
Mathnasium students take a twopart
diagnostic assessment, both
written and oral. The results are
then used to create learning plans
tailor-made for each child. Each student
has a personalized and prescriptive
learning program to follow
with the help of specially trained
Mathnasium tutors.
A variety of methods are used to
enhance a child’s progress and to
build Number Sense. Progress is
measured by their grades in school,
advancement in the Mathnasium
program, and, the most important
“Planning a family or corporate
party can become a major undertaking,”
say Rex and Kathi Haney,
owners of Topeka’s Gage Bowls.
“There are so many decisions to
make. Then, there’s the concern of
trying to please everyone, and the
time involved in putting the party
together. Gage Bowl’s customized
party motto is, ‘Fun for all and
easy for you,’ because we take care
of the party-planning work, leaving
everyone free to enjoy the party!
“Gage Center Bowl and Gage
Bowl North are proud to offer the
best party value in Topeka. We
have a large variety of bowling
packages to fit any budget—and all
the FUN is thrown in for free.
“Gage Bowls can create a party for
any event, targeting a wide range of
ages and groups—and we keep it
easy on the budget. We can customize
a party or get-together for
almost any occasion: birthdays,
anniversaries, promotions, retirements,
reunions, corporate meetings,
team-building, family gatherings,
church groups or national conventions.
If people can ‘think up’ the
occasion, Gage Bowls can customize
the party for them.
“Bowling parties appeal to all age
groups in all walks of life, with all
levels of athletic skill. In other
result of all—their new love of
mathematics.
“We get terrific input from parents,”
relates Anita. “Some tell us how
much their child looks forward to
coming here. Emerson’s mom
stopped in to report that she’d just
attended a parent-teacher conference
and learned that her daughter
had improved by two levels!
“Mathnasium is a highly specialized,
effective program that gets
results. We focus on building a solid
foundation of skills that will maximize
a child’s success in school, in
their SAT/ACT scores and beyond.
“Mathnasium’s programs are also
very affordable, and can be paid on
a monthly basis.”
put the party guests’ names into the
computer, which keeps track of the
scoring for each bowler, and even
helps them pick out their shoes and
include ‘bumper bowling’ for the
kids—and for adults, we throw some
extra fun into bowling with colored
pin games, company tournaments,
Count On Burklyn Designs To
“Set Your Holiday Home Apart”
“I strive to make sure every client
gets the exact ‘look’ they want,”
says Crista Burk, of Burklyn
Designs. “With the holidays fast
approaching, many people decide to
freshen-up or redecorate their homes
before company arrives. I can show
how simple things such as a new
back splash can ‘update’ a kitchen...
and even help with holiday decorating
or re-arranging furniture.
“My specialty is in finding items
that are different and unique. I like
to use materials that will set my
clients’ homes apart from others—
like exotic woods, beautiful onyx
and granite, and fine fabrics.
“When a holiday re-do is desired,
there is a time issue to be aware of.
New flooring, back splashes, art, or a
re-design takes less time than custom
orders such as new window treatments
or re-upholstery work. We
must submit orders by the end of
October to have items finished for
Thanksgiving...and by mid-November
to be done in time for Christmas.
“I enjoy working on whole-home
designs as well as remodels. My goal
is to make each client’s project
(whatever it is) occur as smoothly
and easily for them as possible—
from arranging a living room to helping
with new construction selections.
Spinal Decompression
our on-staff licensed
allows us to
not only heal the
but also
to help patients in
strengthening the surrounding structures
“For six years, we have specialized
exclusively in utilizing Spinal
Decompression Therapy. The treatment
is affordable, safe and comfortable,
and the benefits in most cases
are very long lasting. A testimony to
the success of our treatment is that
some of our patients are doctors themselves,
Neurosurgeons, Internists, Family
Practitioners and Chiropractors.
runners for the table.
“Check Engine” Light On? Don’t Wait!
Every wonder what that “Check
Engine” light on the dashboard is
really saying? It’s not saying, “Cover
me with sticky notes or your favorite
photo.” Maybe you’re tired of looking
at it and try to ignore it, or—worse
yet—another mechanic or shop has
told you not to worry about it!
“If the Check Engine light is on, it’s
on for a reason,” says Walt Pursell,
owner of Walt’s Auto Service Plus
at 2210 SW 10th. “It’s saying,
‘Here’s your sign.’ There is a problem,
and it should be checked out
before it turns into a bigger problem.
“Our four experienced diagnostic
machines—Shane, Jesse, Joe and I,
can properly diagnose a vehicle’s
problem, and inform about possible
future troubles that might occur.
“Winter is just around the corner...
not a good time of year to be stranded
on the road with vehicle trouble.
Many problems can be avoided with
regular maintenance. Prevention, is
the easiest way to keep from being
stalled on the road, and it’s also the
cheapest way to maintain a vehicle.
“Three often overlooked important
areas of maintenance are: (1) The
cooling and heating system, (2) the
fuel filter and (3) the transmission.
Preventive maintenance on most of
these items will cost a couple hundred
dollars. If that seems like a lot—keep
“You may know us as the largest
health insurer in Kansas, but behind
those well-known symbols stand
more than 1,400 people dedicated to
serving our customers,” says Mike
Valdivia of Blue Cross and Blue
Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS). “We
are currently looking for dedicated,
dependable people who are interested
in seeking a career path with one
of the most trusted names in Kansas.
“In Kansas, the ‘Blue’ tradition of
security and dependability has
thrived for more than six decades
under the guidance of BCBSKS.
“From its earliest days in 1942,
when the company first opened its
doors with just three employees and
eight members, it has grown into a
company that today serves more than
885,000 Kansans who carry a Blue
Cross and Blue Shield identification
card.
“At BCBSKS, we offer employees
solid training and friendly support in
a variety of challenging careers.
Because we value our employees,
we also encourage internal promotions
and provide tuition reimbursement
for those wanting to further
their education.
“Along with great health insurance
benefits BCBSKS offers competitive
salaries, an excellent work environment,
flexible hours and financial
Walt Pursell, “the singing mechanic”
in mind that repairing them could
cost into the thousands of dollars.
“It’s unfortunate that most people
don’t go to a mechanic unless their
vehicle actually breaks down. Believe
me, it’s a lot less inconvenient, and
considerably less painful (expensive)
to not wait until that happens.”
So, the next time your vehicle’s
Check Engine light comes on, leave
the sticky notes and photos on your
fridge...go see “Walt’s.” They’ll get
you to work on time, check out your
vehicle and phone you with a repair
estimate. Call 785-233-3300 today
Heartfelt Spirit Now At New Location
If you’ve wondered what happened
to the Heartfelt Spirit store
(formerly located in West Ridge
Mall)—they simply relocated!
Heartfelt Spirit opened at their new
location at 29th and Wanamaker
(near Sheridan’s) this past June.
“This is a great location,” says
owner Genie Gnagi. “We have plenty
of store-front parking here and
lots of space to display all of our
high school, college, and sportrelated
jewelry and accessories!”
Genie first started selling her
unique line of products at Arts and
Crafts shows. When she discovered
there was such a demand for all
things “school and sports-related,”
she decided to open a store about 2
1/2 years ago. She still attends up to
10 craft shows a year, but—lucky for
us—her merchandise is available
year-round at her new location. With
the holidays fast approaching, this is
the place to get some great gifts.
“Guys, we have items for you too,
such as money clips, lanyards, cell
phone cases, string bags for gym, and
more,” says Genie. “We represent the
Kansas colleges: Emporia State,
Wichita State, K.U. and K-State, plus
we have items for Texas, Nebraska,
Oklahoma, as well as NFL jewelry.
“We also carry Christian jewelry,
and we have one of the largest
portfolio of designs they’ve done.
Items are priced separately, so you
can pick and choose what you
like.
Christmas Decor has experience
decorating all kinds
of structures, including
back decks, gazebos and
more. How about having
them create a spectacular
backyard view from your
family room? They sell (or
lease) and install quality
outdoor lighting, or they’ll
install decorations you
already own. They also take
down, pack and store the items!
“In order to get ahead of any bad
winter weather,” Kevin explains,
“we start installations in October,
with building, house and tree lights.
We then return in November with
the ground lighting, wreaths and
garlands.”
If you’re too busy—or don’t like
Decor’s professional crew decorate
for you. Their franchise connection
“We celebrated our 13 years of continued
growth by inviting our customers
and friends to our annual
Customer Appreciation Day,” says
Carl Koupal, Community National
Bank’s president and CEO.
“Our annual event gets bigger and
better every year as more and more
people discover the simple pleasure
of working with a locally owned
bank they can depend upon. Our
event is our small way of saying,
‘Thank You Topeka!’
“We know most of our customers
on a first name basis, and this annual
get-together helps us get to know
their families better as well, which
builds solid relationships. It’s just
one more advantage of working
with a local bank.
“For those people who couldn’t
attend, we invite them to stop in
soon, have a cup of coffee, and let us
know how we can serve them better.
“At a time when some financial
institutions have experienced difficulty,
CNB has experienced growth,
partly because of our ‘home town’
personalized service. Our customers
appreciate the fact that we understand
their needs and they can communicate
face-to-face with us and
don’t have to play the ‘1-800’ game.
We have also continually added services
and kept up with larger banks.
We offer three convenient locations
and over 30 ATM locations where
CNB customers can retrieve money
without fees. Plus, our improved
Internet Banking system is being
used frequently by many of our customers.”
After a store has been owned and
operated by one family member
after another since 1921...it brings
to mind the question of “What will
happen?” when its owners retire.
“I’ve known Walt and Joyce
Hillmer and been a customer of
Hillmer’s for many years,” says
Greg Mathena, businessman and
new owner of Hillmer’s Luggage,
decided to retire, I couldn’t think of
a more respected business to obtain.
“When customers come into the
store now, they’ll find that many
things haven’t changed. I’ve kept
the best...including Walt’s welltrained,
experienced sales associates,
who have been as much help to me
as they are to our customers. We’ve
also kept many of the quality brands
of luggage, leather coats and business
merchandise.
“So, what is different? We have
expanded our lines and added more
popularly priced items in almost
every category. We’ve maintained
the quality...but we now offer something
in everyone’s price range. We
invite new and old customers alike to
come in and see the many exciting
new items we have available.
Tennis Still Strong At Wood Valley
Daryl Greenstreet, Director of Tennis
“We have recently partnered with
Maximus Fitness Center,” says
Daryl Greenstreet, Director of Tennis
for Wood Valley Racquet Club &
Fitness Center. “It’s a great arrangement
for both of us, and it gives our
members the potential to utilize five
Maximus centers. This partnership
has also strengthened our programs,
including Tennis. Our Tennis program
is going strong, and we are
working on improvements to the
facility and offering new programs.
“We have recently resurfaced the
tennis courts, which improves our
playing conditions...and, we are
working with the USTA (U.S.
Tennis Association) to offer new
programs for the Junior and Advanced
Junior players. Situational,
Can’t find a jacket that fits perfectly?
We also offer custom-made
leather jackets.
“Many of our finest leather coats
and jackets are hundreds of dollars
less than comparable ones sold in
Kansas City and other areas. We
also have quality leather motorcycle
jackets, chaps, vests and gloves.
“Our imported and Americanmade
leathers are tanned and finished
to higher standards for longer
wear, water-repellency and color
fastness—for successful, professional
cleaning from Hillmer’s.
“Many ladies may not be aware
that we carry a large selection of
beautiful designer handbags. These
bags, found priced at $89 elsewhere,
are just $49 here at Hillmer’s! We
also have a huge selection of leather
billfolds...briefcases and computer
bags, including some cases for those
‘hard to fit’ computers.
“I believe that I love the Christmas
season even more than Walt did. I
went really crazy at Market and purchased
dozens of fun and unusual
gift items perfect for family members,
business associates or as stocking
stuffers. For example: Swimming
Jellyfish Aquariums, ant
farms, gear clocks (mechanical
clocks) and others, kids’ toys, night
in Europe, help young players improve
faster. We utilize modified
courts, tennis balls and scoring methods.
Kids eight-and-under play on a
36-foot court and those from 8 to 10
play on a 60-foot court. The smaller
courts make it easier to train younger
players better tactically, athletically
and technically. Our highly qualified
tennis staff is Certified through the
USPTA and PTR. Whether young
people just want to play for fun, or
want to attain college scholarships,
we have junior programs to help
them reach their goals.
“We also have a variety of adult tennis
programs for beginners through
advanced. For those who haven’t
played for awhile, adult leagues,
which are designed for all levels, are
a great way to get back to playing.
Organized leagues also provide a
way to get fit in a competitive environment.
All games are played on our
indoor courts, so there’s no worry
from the weather. We also have
‘Mixers’ on a regular basis.”
