“I was talking with a colleague the 

other day, discussing the current 

state of the financial markets, when I 

thought of the Kansas motto, Ad 

Astra per Aspera. ‘To the stars 

through difficulties’ is the English 

translation, though the Latin sounds 

more poetic. 

“When I was a High School kid in 

Chanute, I knew the motto, but it 

didn’t inspire me. I thought it 

referred to the struggles of the pioneers, 

which it did, but I didn’t see 

the relevance in my life. Many years 

and many ‘difficulties’ later, it’s a 

motto I believe in. 

“Like many ‘boomers’ I’ve seen our 

country experience a lot of strife: the 

assassination of a President, a long, 

unpopular war in Vietnam, a struggle 

for civil rights, double digit inflation, 

the cold war, ‘Black Monday,’ the 

Dot-com collapse, 9-11, and the war 

in Afghanistan and Iraq.

way through 2008 and now it’s time 

to start minimizing the tax hit coming 

your way on April 15, 2009! 

“Luckily, there have been some 

changes in 2008 that bode well for 

some of us,” explains Robert 

Holmes, CPA, PFS, and owner of 

Holmes & Associates Chartered. 

“The question of whether someone 

will owe money on April 15 starts 

with taxable income: the higher it is, 

the more tax you pay, right? If you 

said ‘yes,’ you might be wrong. 

Several types of income are taxed at 

different rates: ordinary, capital 

gains and qualifying dividends. 

“Ordinary income is the income 

that can be taxed anywhere from 

10% to 35%. This includes wages, 

interest income, pension, alimony, 

business and many other forms of 

income. Those with self-employment 

income from a partnership or 

sole proprietorship not only have to 

pay income tax, but also selfemployment 

tax. 

“Capital gains are generated by 

selling or exchanging certain assets 

held for more than one year. Stocks, 

bonds, real estate and other ‘capital’ 

assets held greater than one year are 

taxed at 15% if your ordinary tax rate 

is 25% or more. If it’s 15% or below, 

the capital gains tax rate is 0%.

houses and turning on the heat,” says

After ten years in service to 

Topeka’s most popular barbeque 

eatery as a server and manager, 

Janelle Bueltel has lately been found 

running the catering desk at Boss 

Hawg’s. 

It’s a natural step for Bueltel, as 

she takes her ten years of skill and 

experience in making Boss Hawg’s 

restaurant guests happy, and brings it 

to the clients of Boss Hawg’s 

Catering. 

Catering has always been the cornerstone 

of Boss Hawg’s, and the 

entire company began, simply 

enough as a home-based catering 

service. The tiny business grew as 

demand did, and the catering (as 

well as the restaurant it inspired) 

thrived unabated until the unexpected 

death of owner Hank Lumpkin in 

2003, leaving his widow Elizabeth 

struggling to run the business alone. 

“Catering hasn’t gotten the attention 

it deserved since Hank died and my 

focus was drawn to the running of the 

overall company,” says Elizabeth. “It 

has been wonderful to have Janelle 

roll up her sleeves and and return our 

catering department to the level of 

service and professionalism that put 

us on the map originally.” 

While Elizabeth and Hank shared 

the running of the company for 

years, and worked together taking 

catering calls and insuring the timeliness 

of delivery and professional 

handling of clients’ needs, the death 

of her husband and business partner 

meant that Elizabeth was no longer 

on the front lines of the catering 

department. 

“It was a terrible shock when Hank 

died, and I didn’t cope very well. 

Without an owner detailing every 

aspect of catering, clients had to 

have felt the loss as well,” says 

Elizabeth. “Having Janelle running 

catering has brought that owner 

mentality back to the catering 

department.” 

Watching Janelle on a busy day as 

the catering calls come in unabated 

is truly educational. She juggles 

multiple phone lines and numerous 

client calls with the expertise of an 

experienced executive secretary; 

runs last minute changes to Chef Bill 

Fuscino in the kitchen to make sure 

the clients’ orders are conveyed 

accurately; checks in with the staff 

packing the order and loading it into 

one of the signature pink vans; and 

often goes out on caterings herself, 

checking in with clients in person to 

be sure they are delighted with the 

food and service they are getting. 

“Without Elizabeth and Hank here, 

I knew timeliness of delivery and 

accuracy of catering orders had to

“Since I had been here since the 

beginning of the company, I 

was very familiar with the dedication 

they both had to the 

catering clients, and how tirelessly

‘dance with the one that brung 

ya’ in reference to our catering 

clients.” 

Elizabeth adds, “Catering

when it all started. That makes 

it apropos, somehow, that she would 

eventually lead our most critical 

department and serve our most 

deserving constituency.” 

An exciting addition Janelle has 

initiated is direct management of inhouse 

banquets at Boss Hawg’s. 

“We have a great private loft for 

banquets and parties,” says Janelle, 

“but the restaurant managers who 

were handling banquets were being 

pulled in so many directions. I felt it 

was important to give each banquet 

client the same attention as the 

catering clients. So I made banquets 

my job too!”
