Principal’s Message
Volume 6, 6, Issue 8
April, 2009
In an effort to continually support student learning into the 21 st century, Parkland P.S. has set aside some money
to support technology. To this end, our committee is interested in ordering a multi media cart which contains a video camera;
a digital camera; and an IMac laptop. This will support the Media Studies portion of our curriculum. As well, we will
order a SMART document camera and four additional IMac laptops.
The Ministry of Education has infused additional funds into our school libraries. With this money our school team
along with our librarian Mr. Burbidge has ordered some wonderful resources to update our library collection. We look forward
to receiving new books, DVDs which support our content areas, CD books and reference materials. To support our second
language learners, Mr. Burbidge has also ordered dual language books, dual language dictionaries, and picture books.
We look to receiving our new materials in next few months and sharing them with you when they arrive.
Primary News
The primary division is looking forward to our spring concert that is coming up on Thursday April 30th. Our grade
2 and 3 students are participating in a nine week swimming program at Milliken Pool. Grade 2 students go every
Thursday from April 16th to June 11th. Grade 3 students go every Friday from April 17th to June 12th. This is a
great opportunity for our kids to learn a valuable life skill through qualified instructors following the Red Cross
awards system. It’s a great form of exercise and a lot of fun!
Grade 2 students will also be going on a trip to the sugar bush this month to learn about how maple syrup is
made. We would like to remind all primary students of the importance of indoor and outdoor shoes. At this particularly
muddy and rainy time of year, it is extra important that the kids are keeping clean and do not bring extra dirt
into the classroom. Thank you for your attention to this matter. We wish everyone the best for spring!

Earth Hour – Saturday, March 28, 2009, 8:30pm
P AGE 3
Now in year three, Earth Hour started off in Sydney, Australia in 2007. In 2008, millions of people
in over 30 countries switched off their lights for Earth Hour. Last year, About 10 million people in Canada
participated.
Many major global cities are joining Earth Hour 2009, including the flagship cities of Toronto, Ottawa
and Montréal, Vancouver, Halifax and Edmonton. Here in York Region, Markham, King City,
Whitchurch-Stouffville, Richmond Hill and Newmarket have already signed on.
On March 28, 2009 at 8:30pm, people around the world will unite and switch off for Earth Hour.
Everyone in Canada is encouraged to participate. Let’s support the efforts of the World Wildlife
Fund Canada. Participating in Earth Hour is a simple way to show that you want to be part of the solution.
Earth Hour is a straightforward way for York Region’s municipalities and citizens to take action
and celebrate our existing efforts to fight climate change.
Junior Division News
Although broken up by March Break, March has been an eventful month nonetheless! Before the March Break,
the report cards went home marking the end of term two. Students need to make sure that all third pages of the report
card and envelopes have been returned to their classroom teacher.
As we dig into third term, the students in grade four and five are working on speeches and the opportunity to
refine their presentation skills. Please assist your child by watching them practice their speech. They would also welcome
your positive feedback (what have they done well?) and constructive criticism (how can their speech be better?). We look
forward to hearing the upcoming speeches.
Now that the spring like weather has started to arrive, and in order to promote classroom cleanliness and safety,
students are reminded once again to have two different pairs of shoes at school, one for indoor use and the other for outdoor
use during recess and before and after school.
The month of March flew by and has brought us both spring and the beginning of term 3. Until next month…
Intermediate Division News
In the month of April, we are looking forward to a
very important event that will be taking place here at
Parkland aimed to motivate students to live a healthy,
active lifestyle. Jump Rope for Heart is a national
fundraising program that gets kids physically active
and raises vital funds for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
By allowing Parkland students to participate in a
Jump Rope for Heart event, we will be demonstrating a
commitment to heart health. A kick off assembly is
scheduled on April 1st with the actual event taking
place April 22nd. Parents are welcome to come out
and see us in action on April 22nd....and join in if you'd
like to! Thank you in advance for all of the donations
made.
Earth Rangers
On Tuesday, March 10 th, animal ambassadors
from Earth Rangers visited our school with a message
on animal conservation and environmental
stewardship. The Earth Rangers brought in a
barn owl named Athena. Athena visited all the
students in the school from kindergarten to grade
8. The students and staff learned many interesting
facts about Athena’s habitat and life.
The students of Parkland raised 360 dollars for
the Earth Rangers. This money will go towards
Earth Ranger Programs that will support local
conservation efforts in York Region.
