<strong>ATR5001</strong> <strong>–</strong> <strong>Lab</strong> 9<br />

<strong>Donut</strong> <strong>Pad</strong>; <strong>Aquaplast</strong> <strong>Thumb</strong> <strong>Splint</strong><br />

Purpose: to protect contusion or AC joint sprain.<br />

<strong>Donut</strong> <strong>Pad</strong> Fabrication and Application<br />

Supplies needed: orthoplast, orthopedic felt/foam rubber, tape adherent, moleskin, 1 ½” white athletic<br />

tape, and 6” single or double length elastic bandage.<br />

Instructions:<br />

1) <strong>Inspect</strong> injured area<br />

2) Cut a section of aquaplast or like material of sufficient size to cover area<br />

3) Heat material until it is moldable<br />

4) Form material to affected area<br />

5) Allow material to harden sufficiently<br />

6) Cut an (inner) pad with center area cut out slightly larger than affected area.<br />

7) Attach the outer and inner pads<br />

8) Cover edges of pad with moleskin or like material<br />

9) Apply an adequate quantity of tape adherent to area<br />

10) Fix pad to area<br />

11) Secure pad in place with elastic bandage<br />

12) Secure elastic bandage with white athletic tape and/or elastic tape<br />

13) Check to ensure pad provides adequate protection<br />

a) force dissipation<br />

b) limited migration<br />

14) Check to ensure procedure allows patient to function in activity<br />

15) Check to ensure procedure does not create further injury to player or opponent<br />

<strong>Aquaplast</strong> (Hard) <strong>Thumb</strong> <strong>Splint</strong><br />

Purpose: to protect ulnar collateral ligament/MCP joint of thumb.<br />

Supplies needed: 1 ½” white athletic tape, elastic tape (e.g. Expandover, Sher-Light, or Powerflex),<br />

underwrap, tape adherent, and aquaplast.<br />

Instructions:<br />

1) Cut Appropriate Sized Section of <strong>Aquaplast</strong> using pattern<br />

2) Heat Section of <strong>Aquaplast</strong><br />

3) Apply One Layer of Underwrap<br />

4) Mold Section of <strong>Aquaplast</strong> to <strong>Thumb</strong><br />

5) Allow <strong>Aquaplast</strong> to Harden<br />

6) Cover <strong>Aquaplast</strong> with Foam Rubber/Felt<br />

7) Secure <strong>Splint</strong> with Elastic Tape<br />

8) Check for Adequate Protection<br />

9) Check for Adequate Function<br />
