In the spirit of the Adopt-A-School
Program, the Department of
Education launched in 2003 the
National Schools Maintenance
Week, more popularly known as
Brigada Eskwela.

Society benefits not only from
better classrooms and school
campuses, it also benefits from
the goodwill generated when
people exert effort for the
common good— hand in hand
with their fellow man.

Brigada Eskwela is the current
day version of our proverbial
Bayanihan spirit— that sacred
tradition of volunteerism we
Filipinos value and that sacred
tradition of volunteerism we
should teach each and every
Filipino child.

The true value of Brigada Eskwela is
in how well we can teach our children
the essence of community— and of
humanity. The lesson of Brigada
Eskwela is the lesson of the Filipino
spirit.

At the launch of Brigada Eskwela
in 2003, 12,500 schools
participated with over 700,000
volunteer man-days and an
estimated total value of P329
million in labor and materials.

By 2007, Brigada Eskwela hit a
record high of 90% participation
among school communities,
generating more than P2.5 billion
worth of support-in-kind and
volunteer man-hours.

From the original target involving
10 percent of all schools
nationwide, by 2008, we have
achieved 100 percent participation
of 44,619 school communities all
over the country.

Through the years, our public
schools have benefited from
Brigada Eskwela in terms of
Community Maintenance and
Operating Expenses (MOOE).
