Qing-Qing Yang (SUJAC VP External) welcomes everyone to the campus <strong>of</strong> <strong>John</strong> <strong>Abbott</strong> College, and<br />

begins introductions. Qing-Qing (VP External), Andrew Francis(VP Academic) , Sabrina Han (Congress member)<br />

and Hao Sheng Zhang (Congress member) re<strong>present</strong> <strong>John</strong> <strong>Abbott</strong> College. Shannon Gittens (VP External)<br />

re<strong>present</strong>s Dawson College. Yahya Azami (External Coordinator) and Eric Zhao (Coordinator <strong>of</strong> Cultural Affairs)<br />

re<strong>present</strong> Marianopolis College. Caela Claveau (Social activities coordinator) and Roman Brodsky (Treasurer)<br />

re<strong>present</strong> Vanier College.<br />

Qing-Qing Yang accepts the chair and calls the <strong>meeting</strong> to order. Sabrina Han is designated the recorder <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>minutes</strong> for this <strong>meeting</strong>.<br />

3.0 UPDATE OF COAC CONTACT LIST<br />

The contact list was past around for everyone to write down their information.<br />

4.0.1. COAC CONSTITUTION (COPY TO ALL MEMBER COLLEGES)<br />

Discussion ensues about whether the former roles <strong>of</strong> Financial <strong>of</strong>ficer, Vice-chair person are<br />

needed during COAC <strong>meeting</strong>s (in Constitution). Each Student Union will look into updating the<br />

COAC Constitution.<br />

4.3 COAC MEETINGS AND ALTERNATIVES (FACEBOOK, SKYPE, CASUAL<br />

MEETINGS)<br />

Discussion ensues. Will continue to have formal <strong>meeting</strong>s.<br />

Qing-Qing Yang explains that according to the Constitution, all member unions contribute<br />

evenly from their own funding for COAC expenses. Budgets for small, specific projects are<br />

managed on a case-by-case basis, depending on each project’s circumstances.<br />

5.0 STUDENT UNION SHIRTS (SUJAC)<br />

VCSA explains that they have shirts with their logo and Student Union website imprinted. Shirts<br />

are available for the whole student population. They are earned through events and contests on<br />

their Facebook page such as “Word <strong>of</strong> the day”. These shirts are ordered in bundles therefore<br />

they are cheap. The shirts come in many different colors. Executive have costumed sweaters.<br />

Congress members get a t-shirt at the end <strong>of</strong> the semester.<br />

MSU explains that they have cardigans, polos and sweat pants with their logo imprinted on the<br />

side. Congress members pay half.<br />

SUJAC will bring up having mass produced shirts during Congress <strong>meeting</strong>s.<br />

6.0 STUDENT UNION EXPOSURE (SUJAC)<br />

VSCA explains that they get exposure by having contest on their Facebook page and on their<br />

website. Hence students drop in to their <strong>of</strong>fice in order to participate and to pick up their prize.<br />

SUJAC will look into it.<br />

MSU mostly get exposure during Orientation where they hand out the “Messenger Bag” with<br />

information on MSU.<br />

DSU also get a lot <strong>of</strong> exposure during Orientation called “Welcome Week” where there are<br />

events organised entirely by DSU. They give away free water bottles with their logo imprinted in<br />

order to encourage sustainability also to get exposure. DSU also run campaigns and give away<br />

free t-shirts to students who participate in the campaigns. DSU provides their students with free<br />

veggie lunched every Monday.<br />

7.0 FOOD (VCSA)<br />

VCSA explains that their cafeteria food is expensive, unhealthy and they encounter issues with<br />

their staff.<br />

Discussion ensues about prices, line ups, food choice and waiting time.<br />

8.0 AGENDA (VCSA)<br />

VCSA explains that returning students at Vanier College must pay $10 for an Agenda.<br />

JAC has free agendas with ads that pays for most <strong>of</strong> the cost.<br />

Marianopolis has free agendas with minimal advertising.<br />

9.0 SEXUAL EDUCATION (MSA)<br />

Marianopolis wondering about sex ed. In other CEGEP.<br />

JAC has sex awareness week organized by Health and Wellness <strong>of</strong>fice.<br />

Vanier has safe sex week with activities and games. Many humanities courses devoted to sex<br />

education.<br />

10.0 CO-OP AND BOOK PRICE<br />

JAC finds that the books sold at their bookstore are overpriced hence they are looking into coops.<br />

Vanier has “Book Loan” program available for financially troubled students.<br />

Marianopolis does not have a bookstore, they use Concordia’s. They do have a secondhand book<br />

list.<br />

11.0 OFFICE APPEARANCE<br />

JAC wondering what others do to make <strong>of</strong>fice more welcoming.<br />

Vanier every year execs pick new wall colours. First tank; popcorn machine, games (on site)<br />

Marianopolis has couch, computer, generally gets many guests to come in.<br />

12.0 CLUBS<br />

JAC varying budgets for clubs.<br />

Marianopolis has strict budget policy. Many <strong>of</strong> their clubs do fundraising. Marianopolis has<br />

approximately 80 clubs.<br />

Vanier club space is getting tight. Wondering about club room seize. Vanier has currently 23<br />

clubs.<br />

JAC only have permanent club rooms for active clubs. They do not have specific club room for<br />

all clubs. Clubs book classroom as needed. JAC has approximately 30 clubs.<br />

Dawson has rooms with dividers for clubs. Dawson has approximately 23 clubs.<br />

13.0 PEOPLE POWER<br />

Marianopolis would like to have a play educating students on self potential.<br />

JAC, VCSA and DSU will look into dividing costs to have the play performed at each Cegep.<br />

14.0 LOCKERS<br />

Vanier explains that lockers cost 10$ per student. Students are paired with random students if<br />

one dose not have a locker buddy.<br />

Dawson explains that lockers are 7$ each. Students who are alone are assigned a small locker.<br />

Paired students are assigned a long locker.<br />

Marianopolis explains that lockers are 5$.<br />

JAC explains that lockers are shared usually by two students and they are free. However, given<br />

the school is overpopulated this semester their is a shortage.<br />

15.0 SPEAKER VIETNAM WAR SURVIVOR<br />

Marianopolis ensues discussion about Vietnam war survivor speaker and the lack <strong>of</strong> interest in<br />

school involvement. Having speakers in classes may prove more effective.<br />

16.0 ORIENTATION PROCEDURE AND DURATION<br />

JAC says that orientation has not proven useful to some students.<br />

Dawson organizes ‘Welcome Week’ with activities, games and freebies. In order to promote<br />

sustainability, DSU give every new student a reusable water bottle with their logo designed on<br />

the bottle.<br />

VCSA’s orientation occurs during mid-August, lasts a week and students are divider by their<br />

program. The orientation includes speeches by faculty during the assembly and VCSA plans<br />

events such as Scavenger Hunt where students receive VSCA t-shirts.<br />

Marianopolis explains that they have two orientations. The first consists <strong>of</strong> a visit from<br />

secondary five students where the school gives them a tour. The second occurs at the beginning<br />

<strong>of</strong> the fall semester called ‘Welcome Back Day’ where there is a BBQ organize for students.<br />

17.0 BATHROOMS<br />

Vanier explains that their bathrooms are dirty, inconveniently structured and located and there<br />

are more washrooms available for girls than for guys.<br />

Dawson explains that their washrooms are clean. Their washroom doors dispose a foot hinge on<br />

the inside which allows students to open the door without dirtying their hands.<br />

JAC explains that girls and boys’ washrooms are located next to each other and are most <strong>of</strong> the<br />

time found at the same place on each floor.<br />

19.0 OTHER BUSINESS<br />

Dawson:<br />

-lower tuition fees.<br />

-to end ban on forbidding homosexuals to give blood.<br />

-Fundraising for humanitarian trip.<br />

-Campaigning to ban bottled water.<br />

-Halloween party for students.<br />

-Events for native, in order to raise aboriginal awareness.<br />

-Student<br />

-CFS student saver, discounts on travel, stores and restaurants.<br />

-Banner drops to discourage labelling cafeterias by ethnicity.<br />

Vanier:<br />

VCSA would like to organize a pageant in each english Cegep. The winner would be crowned<br />

Miss COAC. Eligibility criteria would have to include good academic standing and active<br />

involvement within her school or community.<br />

Marianopolis:<br />

MSU would like VP Externals to organize intercollegiate outings.<br />

20.0 NEXT MEETING<br />

All members agree that holding a routine <strong>meeting</strong> once per month is a good idea. However,<br />

<strong>meeting</strong> again before the winter break is not worthwhile, since there will not be an insufficient<br />

number <strong>of</strong> topics for discussion.<br />

Caela Claveau <strong>of</strong>fers to host the next COAC <strong>meeting</strong> at Vanier College. Some members mention<br />

that Thursday evenings are preferred because <strong>of</strong> their work schedules.<br />
