“Time after time magazine insiders said our
regional publication looked as sophisticated
as a national magazine and I credit that to the
talented work of B&G Design. From directing
photo shoots, to image selection, to the actual
design of covers, sections, and well stories,
their work is visually compelling and elevates
the stories being told to a higher level.”
that would help us convey the energy and intellectual excitement
because of the designers’ exceptional, award-winning experience
with city magazines, and because we knew they would help us carry
out a vision for Indiana Alumni Magazine as a kind of city magazine
Our research has shown that our alumni publication is the most widely read piece
days of the new magazine launch, we received more than 300 letters from readers,
98 percent of which were overwhelmingly positive. The designers made the entire
process enjoyable -- they attended to our every need, worked closely with us, listened
well, and produced a magazine that exceeded even our own high expectations.”
We were sold on B&G Design Studios as soon as we heard their presentation.
Tim and John understood what was and wasn’t working about our existing
design in ways that even we didn’t, and they impressed us with their insights
about how to make it better. They proved to be easy and fun to work with,
respecting our ideas while pushing us to consider other options. The result
is a design that’s cleaner, less cluttered, more sophisticated, and more
what we wanted — and prolific with ideas of their own — they created a design that
exceeded our expectations. The creativity and efficiency John and Tim brought to
the project made for an exceptionally smooth process and a revitalized publication
In a truncated time period, B&G Design Studios didn’t just redesign the Philadelphia
Daily News. They gave our storied publication an entire new identity, one that has
been welcomed with open arms by readers and advertisers alike. They got us back in
touch with our tabloid roots, with bolder headlines and bigger photography, while,
at the same time, modernizing our look for the times with more white space and
navigational tools. Most importantly, they moved into our newsroom, sold their ideas
to a cynical lot, and worked hand-in-hand with our staff to bring their vision to life.
They proved to be collaborative, sensitive, and visionary all at the same time.
We got immense value from working with B&G, so much so that we’re
maintaining a consultant relationship with them well into the future.”
Phillies-Giants series
BY LES BOWEN
BETHLEHEM —There were
many things Andy Reid wanted
to talk about last night, important
things, at the threshold of
the most unusual Eagles training
camp of the Reid era. Thingslike
howReid will handle trying to get
ateam ready without the background
of spring work, the odd
businessofsigning and assimilating
free agents during camp,navigating
the NFL’s new practice
rules —these were all topics Reid
was willing to discusswith animation,
in detail.
But there also was a list of
things Reid didn’t want to talk
about, when the Eagles’ coach
held his welcome-to-Lehigh
pressconferenceinajam-packed
media tent adjacent to the fields
where the team will hold its first
walkthrough ofcamp this morning.
Those would be the more
“headlinish” topics.
Andy didn’t want to talk about
quarterback Kevin Kolb, even to
clarify whether Kolb might be expected
to report by today’s veteran
deadline for teams opening
camp yesterday. (The Eagles, in
fact, arenot asking Kolb to do that,
asource close to the situation said.
He is likely to be traded to the Cardinals
todayortomorrow.)
Andy didn’t want to talk about
free agents the Eagles might sign,
which wasn’t asurprise because
nobody ever talks about thatina
pressconference, anyway.
Andy didn’t want to talk about
wideout DeSean Jackson, who is
DRAMAS AWAIT
Michael Vick says he knows what DeSean Jackson is likely to do. DAVID MAIALETTI /STAFF PHOTOGRAPHER
in danger of being fined if he
doesn’t show today. Grudgingly,
after disclosing thathehas talked
to all of his players in the wakeof
the lockout, Reid acknowledged
Jackson was one of those players.
But he wouldn’t discusswhatwas
said. This seemed significant, because
in the past when holdouts
were threatened, and a player
had told Reid he’d report, Reid
made sure hepassed that along
to cut short the crisis talk.
Sure looks like Jackson, who
has wanted his contract redone
for more than ayear now, isn’t
planning to showontime.(As for
what exactly “on time” would be,
an NFL spokesman said thatwas
up to the teams. The Eagles said
only that they don’t comment on
issues involving discipline.)
Earlier, quarterback Michael
Vick was asked about Jackson
and said: “Iknowwhat’s going on
but Ican’t divulge that information
right now.”
Again, if the information was
“he’ll be here,” it would be divulged,
one would think.
Of course, there’s an outside
chance the information could be
“they’re working on a deal to
make him happy.” The Eagles
have a whole bunch going on
right now, but they got nine of
their 11 draftees signed yesterday,
MEET THE MAN CAVE
WHO SAYS YOU
CAN’T HAVE IT ALL?
This tricked-out basement lair suggests
that maybe you can.
D
By Natalie pompilio
pompiln@phillynews.com
ean Rubenstein’s man cave is a tribute
to all he holds dear: His beloved Philadelphia
sports teams, in particular his
alma mater Temple Owls, and his late
grandfather, college boxing star Lou
Rubenstein. His is a rich, warm room with a full
bar, two televisions, a stereo, a gaming system and
a bobblehead collection. “A man cave isn’t complete
without bobbleheads,” Rubenstein said.
KEY ELECTRONICS
Above the bar is a 32-inch flat-screen.
On the opposite wall hangs a 60-inch
flat-screen with stereo sound and an
Xbox hookup. The cave can hold more
than 20 people comfortably. Four of
them can stretch out on the brown
leather recliners that face the larger
television. “With cup holders,” Rubenstein
pointed out. “That’s imperative.”
BALLS, BALLS, BALLS
Under the smaller television at the
granite bar are 11 baseballs, including
balls autographed by Larry Bowa,
Lenny Dykstra and the entire 1993
Phillies team. The most valuable one
is autographed by the 1952 National
League All-Stars, a team that included
Jackie Robinson and Stan Musial.
Above the TV is a bat autographed by
Greg Luzinski.
BOBBLEHEADS, BEER
The bobbleheads, including “Phil and
Phillis” and “Harry and Whitey,” occupy
the righthand side of the bar, next to a
working tap shaped like a Phillies “P.”
Nearby are pucks signed by Rick Tocchet
and Eric Lindros.
Our man, Dean Rubenstein, in
his cave. The hinged contraption
above his right hand is a mount
for his iPad, on which he tracks
stats for his fantasy football
team.
Darren Daulton, personally autographed
to Rubenstein, stands
IGGLES AND PHILS
Memorabilia on display includes this autographed
Brian Dawkins Eagles’ helmet,
along with a signed drawing of Randall
Cunningham and a circa-1980 Phillies
poster of Mike Schmidt and Steve Carlton.
THE LOU SHRINE
One focal point of the room is a glass
case displaying the boxing robe,
trunks, gloves and headgear worn by
Rubenstein’s grandfather Lou while he
was a boxer at Temple University. His
letterman sweater hangs in another
glass enclosure on the wall.
HAND-ME-DOWN PANELING
The man cave walls are solid cherry. Rubenstein
bought them about 10 years ago
when Verizon was closing its corporate
office in Marlton, N.J. He had each piece
carefully removed and then repurposed in
his cave. Before, he said, the basement was
“this cheesy ’70s paneling and bananacolored
linoleum floors.”
