The problem
More than 300 million empty toner and
inkjet cartridges end up in our landfills
each year. This means the total weight
of cartridges thrown away each year is
equivalent to 67,612 Ford Explorers or
12,463 Volkswagen Beetles 1 .

The plastic in each toner cartridge takes
three-and-a-half quarts of oil to produce and
the average toner cartridge weighs three-
and-a-half to four pounds. 1 Even worse,
many empty cartridges end up in cities like
Guiyu, China where they are salvaged for
pennies. Cartridge plastics are burned off
or dissolved with hazardous chemicals,
which contaminate the local air, soil and
groundwater. According to the Basal Action
Network, one in ten children in Guiyu has
birth defects due to this type of e-waste
pollution.

The solution
For nearly 15 years, MSE has been an
environmentally responsible company. In
2008, we even became ISO 14001 certified.
We conserve nature’s resources by
reusing certain non-wearing plastic
shells and metal components from empty
OEM cartridges. Based upon an initial
study conducted in 2008, we reuse
approximately 80-90% (by weight) of
the original cartridge components.
Additionally, finished MSE cartridges
contain approximately 50-60% of recycled
content by weight. Post-consumer recycled
content per cartridge varies based on
toner load, condition of cartridges
component as well as by technology.
MSE's current remanufacturing process
prevents more than 4.6 million pounds*
of plastic, metal and other materials from
potentially entering our landfills annually.
MSE recycles more than 1.8 million pounds*
of scrap from manufacturing each year
including items such as plastics, paper,
cardboard, shrinkwrap, aluminum and steel.
