with the Curse of Agade, the <strong>Sumerian</strong> city laments,<br />

the Akkadian <strong>Sargon</strong> and Naramsin romances, and<br />

other historical-literary texts. Many, if not all, of<br />

those texts have a didactic tendency, and a similar<br />

message can be detected in this text as well: destiny<br />

determined by the gods is unavoidable and not to be<br />

resisted. <strong>The</strong> reluctance of Urzababa, and probably<br />

Lugalzagesi, to acquiesce to the divinely sanctioned<br />

ascendance of <strong>Sargon</strong> is used to dramatize that ascen-<br />

dance, just as the opposition of Naramsin to Enlil in<br />

the Curse of Agade is used to dramatize Agade's fall<br />

and destruction.9 <strong>The</strong> text edited here can thus be<br />

seen as one of a series of literary-historical composi-<br />

tions that relate, within a similar ideological frame-<br />

work, the downfall of every major Mesopotamian<br />

hegemony prior to the Old Babylonian period: Uruk<br />

GLOSSES. Lines 5, 6, 11, 12, 14, 16, 27, 35, 40, 42, 43, and<br />

55 have minutely written Akkadian glosses (41 alone has a<br />

<strong>Sumerian</strong> pronunciation gloss). <strong>The</strong>y are often legible only<br />

because we know what to expect, and they sometimes trans-<br />

late the <strong>Sumerian</strong> more freely than literally.<br />

TRANSLITERATION AND TRANSLATION. <strong>The</strong> transliteration<br />

of TRS 73 is based on Cooper's collation of the tablet.' <strong>The</strong><br />

transliteration of 3N T296 is based on Cooper's study of the<br />

cast, the copies and transliterations of Civil and Heimpel,<br />

and final careful collation of the cast by Cooper." <strong>The</strong> many<br />

lexical and grammatical difficulties of the text, and problems<br />

in reconstructing the narrative, will be discussed in the<br />

Commentary.<br />
