THE SECOND COLLECTION, RECEIVED WITH THE
FIRST, IS CATHOLIC CHARITIES

I wouldn’t have done well at the Ascension. Sure, I’d
have followed Jesus and listened intently. But instead of
bowing in homage, I would have waved my hand
urgently, asking, “What do you mean ‘it is not for you to
know the times or seasons that the Father has
established?’ I really need to know when the Spirit will
be sent. I have a very busy schedule, so a more specific
time would be particularly helpful, Jesus, sir.”
I can imagine Jesus simply shaking his head, unsure
of what to do with this particularly challenging follower.
For those of us who like to plan and schedule our
lives in precise detail, the Ascension presents some
challenges. He promises the Spirit will come—but he
doesn’t say when, how, or what that will mean. It’s an
in-between space, and I’m not a big fan of those.
We often have these in-between moments— waiting
for a diagnosis, looking for a new job, seeking healing in
a relationship. They don’t fit into our calendars, and we
can’t predict exactly when the hoped-for result will
come. But we’re asked, as were the disciples, to trust
that even if it feels as though he’s absent, Jesus is with
us—and he does fulfill his promises. He sent the Spirit
as promised, and he promises us life in abundance.
Luke’s Gospel reports that the disciples returned from
the Ascension “with great joy” as they awaited the Spirit.
Instead of feeling anxious in our own in-between
moments, can we learn from the disciples’? Can we live
with joy as we put our full trust in Jesus?

What’s the difference between
martyrdom and suicide?
Both martyrs and people
who commit suicide willingly
sacrifice their lives, so how
are they different? If I
deliberately put myself in a
probable position to be killed—even
for a worthy cause—isn’t that still a
form of suicide?
Life is a gift from God. While
both martyrdom and suicide
contradict the natural human
disposition to preserve and
perpetuate life, the former is a totally
self-giving act; the latter, a selfinflicted
one.
The early Church believed that
martyrs went directly to heaven
because their sacrifice of life was the
ultimate Christ-like expression. Their
courageous endurance of indignities
and tortures—their heroic willingness
to die in defense of the faith or to
save another’s life—demonstrates a
supreme love of God and neighbor
over love for life itself (see
Catechism of the Catholic Church,
2473).
Those who take their own lives to
end personal suffering make a
decision that belongs to God alone.
It’s an action that can revolve totally
around the “self,” often with little
thought given to its consequences.
Nevertheless, our compassionate
God fully knows the intensity of
suffering that triggers suicide and
“can provide the opportunity for
salutary repentance” (2283).

GOLF ANYONE?
The SGGCS golf team recently concluded their golf
season with a match at Old South. Parishioner Paul
McBride coached the team which consisted of nine
golfers from grades 5-7. Golfers ranged from beginners
to a 5 handicap. The team played six matches and
practiced weekly at their home course Eagles Pointe.

Respect Life Committee Meeting
The St. Gianna Respect Life
Committee will have our quarterly
meeting on Tuesday, May 14, following
the 8:30 a.m. Mass and Miraculous
Medal Devotion (about 9:20 a.m. ) in the
Guardian Angel Room. This month we
are blessed to have Dr. Terry O’Neill, a parishioner and
retired OB/GYN prolife doctor, speak to us about some
of his experiences. All are welcome to attend to hear
Dr. O’Neill.
In the afternoon, of May 12, at 2:00 a.m. members of
the Respect Life Committee will host a tea for residents
at Bloom at Bluffton (formerly the Carolina House). If
you would like to join us to visit with these wonderful
people and/or make small finger foods to bring, we

regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 14, 2013. A
First Degree Ceremony will be held at 6:15 p.m.

The meeting will begin with the rosary at 7:15 p.m.
followed by a business meeting at 7:30 p.m. The

The next meeting of the Catholic Book Club is Friday, May 24, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00
a.m. in the conference room at St. Gregory the Great School. The topic for discussion is
religion and science. Those attending are asked to read one of two books by Father Pierre
Teilhard de Chardin, "Hymn of the Universe" or "The Divine Milieu." Father Chardin was a
Jesuit priest and paleontologist whom some consider to have been a mystic. He has
helped to inspire dialogue between faith and science for the past half century.

Congratulations Father Paul
Congratulations to Father Paul MacNeil who was
officially incardinated into the Diocese of Charleston on
May 1 by Bishop Robert Guglielmone. In short, that
means that Father Paul is no longer a priest of the
Diocese of Antigonish, Nova Scotia but will remain with
us in South Carolina as a priest until he retires.
From Wikipedia: "In the Roman Catholic Church,
incardination refers to the situation of a member of the
clergy being placed under the jurisdiction of a particular
bishop or other ecclesiastical superior. Its antonym,
excardination, denotes that a member of the clergy has
been freed from one jurisdiction and is transferred to
another. Both terms are derived from the Latin cardo
(pivot, socket, or hinge), from which the word cardinal is
also derived - hence the Latin verbs incardinare (to
hang on a hinge or fix) and excardinare (to unhinge or
set free).The purpose of incardination is to ensure that
no cleric, whether deacon or priest, is "freelance,"
without a clear ecclesiastical superior to whom he is
responsible."
Catholic Communication Campaign Collection
Next week our parish will take up the Collection for the Catholic
Communication Campaign (CCC). This Collection communicates the
Good News through Catholic social media activities and enriches our
faith through podcasts, television, radio, and print media. Half of all
proceeds remain in our diocese, so please be generous in this
Collection. CCC is how the Good News gets around to you.

first Pentecost. The color red also
reminds us of the blood of the
martyrs. These are the believers of
every generation who by the power of
the Holy Spirit hold firm to the true faith

¡Alégrese toda la tierra!… ¡El Señor es rey! (Salmo 97,1)
El Señor nos ha amado tanto que envió al Espíritu Santo para que hiciera su morada en
nuestro corazón. Esta es una verdad que a veces nos cuesta entender o aceptar, a pesar
de que anhelamos experimentar el profundo amor de Dios.
El amor divino no es solo una aspiración idealista o una idea abstracta, sino una realidad
que transforma a todos los que lo reciben. En Cristo Jesús, el amor de Dios llena de libertad
y gozo a cuantos creen en el Señor. Por el amor del Padre, muchos se han sentido
movidos a dedicarle toda su vida a Cristo; Esteban, por ejemplo, fue capaz de hacer frente
al martirio cuando lo apedrearon porque tenía fe en su Salvador y conocía el amor del Padre.
Dios envió al Espíritu Santo a consolarnos y guiarnos. El Espíritu anhela colmarnos del amor del Padre y por eso
nos dice: “‘El que tenga sed, y quiera, venga y tome del agua de la vida sin que le cueste nada” (Apocalipsis 22,17).
Esta es la vida y el amor que emanan del propio corazón de Dios. Ni siquiera tenemos que merecer este amor; el
Señor nos lo concede gratuitamente y sin límites, nada más porque somos sus hijos muy queridos.
El amor de Dios más que todos los sermones, explicaciones piadosas y declaraciones dogmáticas es la fuerza que

llame a la oficina del Ministerio Hispano para pedirla. Por una razón
de programación, no se toman intensiones el mismo día de la

Are you a divorced Catholic?
Have you re-married?
Do you want to marry again?
These 3 questions affect a large percentage of today's
Catholic population, including members of our parish. It is
not a sin to be a divorced Catholic, however, the Church
does have laws that apply to Catholics who marry without
the permission of the Church. Even though the state has
issued a divorce decree, these Catholics are "still married
in the eyes of the Church”. The Catholic Church does not
want to abandon its members in these situations, but
rather wants to offer them HOPE and THE FULL RICH-
NESS OF THE SACRAMENT OF MARRIAGE. Depending
upon the type of marriage situation (and each one is
unique in and of itself), the Catholic Church provides the
means for this to happen.
If you are a part of this group and feel God tugging at
your heart to respond to this great gift, please give me a
call or contact me with an e-mail to set up a private and
confidential appointment to discuss your situation and the
process that would allow you to once again receive the
sacraments of Holy Eucharist and Holy Matrimony. It does
not cost anything to talk with me and hear the truth about
annulments from someone other than "the neighbor who
knows everything.” No one is going to judge you or think ill
of you. We simply want you to be able to celebrate in fullness
with us. Just come, and let God do the rest.
May our good and gracious God who loves you always in
all ways give you peace of heart and the courage to discern
and respond to His gifts.

What Is Eucharist Adoration?
Understood simply, Eucharistic
Adoration is adoring or honoring the
Eucharistic Presence of Christ. In a
deeper sense, it involves "the
contemplation of the Mystery of Christ
truly present before us".
During Eucharistic Adoration, we
"watch and wait", we remain "silent" in His Presence and
open ourselves to His Graces which flow from the
Eucharist. By worshiping the Eucharistic Jesus, we
become what God wants us to be!

The Saint Vincent de Paul Society is looking for
volunteers to help assist the poor and needy in
the Bluffton area. Vincentians visit the poor in
pairs to determine how they can be helped and
advise them what they might be able to do to
improve their situation. Also, volunteers are
needed for a couple of hours per month to
handle the helpline calls.
