Notes
Journeys have been broken into commonly driven routes.<br />
Please look in the list, find the route you are<br />
traveling and write the corresponding number<br />
in the ‘Route No’ column overleaf. A journey<br />
will commonly comprise more than one route.<br />
For example, if you are traveling from<br />
Windhoek to Outjo (or vice versa), the data<br />
form should contain observations for three<br />
separate routes: route 1, route 3 and route 4.<br />
If your route is not listed, record the start and stop places<br />
and full route details e.g. odometer reading and time at<br />
all towns, major road junctions and other landmarks.<br />
• raptor road counts can be done on any trip over 10km<br />
• record all raptors seen – record unidentified raptors as<br />
UR(s), (m) or (l)<br />
• record all negative counts too<br />
• if counts are done at night, please record times of<br />
sunset and sunrise<br />
Minimum information required:<br />
• date, counter name<br />
• time, place and odometer at start and finish<br />
• first 6 data columns i.e. route, start/finish place, time,<br />
odometer, species, number of birds<br />
Data recording:<br />
• two or more birds less than 300 m (max. 6 telephone<br />
poles) apart should be recorded as a single entry<br />
• estimate numbers within large flocks as accurately as<br />
possible<br />
• record total numbers of birds, then number of adults<br />
and juveniles, where possible<br />
• record bird activity at the moment of first sighting. Put<br />
a in the ? column if the recorded activity of the bird<br />
was influenced by your presence, and a if it wasn’t<br />
• record the substrate being used by the bird at the<br />
moment of first sighting. If the bird is on an artificial<br />
substrate, put a in the ? column if there is an<br />
equivalent natural substrate within 500m, and a if<br />
there isn’t. Vice versa if the bird is on a natural<br />
